Back again with a make or break question about a simulation game! Question inside

Hi there /r/StockMarket !

My last post to this subreddit was me asking for help with a simulation game on the stocks HERE

Tomorrow is Judgment day for our team, then we have the account frozen to track the progress and see where we would end up, this goes on for only a week, then the simulation ends. If it is shorted, the short ends in 2 weeks.

By about Noon tomorrow i will conclude the survey. This explains what the survey is

My team and I are winning in all the classes, but not the state. We have already received our grade, this means we can mess around with the possible % Return.

Any input is greatly appreciated! Here is the current standings for the investments

Hong Kong Unrest May Trigger BIDU Mega Sell

Bearish daily and intra day charts are on watch for a break of this level. Should it happen, Baidu Inc (NASDAQ:BIDU) will dump hard to a potential target of $200.00. This would be just under a 10% correction. The unreal and civil protest going on in Hong Kong could be a trigger, if not continued weaker global and China economic data. See the level below.

Hey,

About 2 weeks ago I threw 40k into the market, 4 mutual funds - BAD TIMING. Since the market has been shitting a brick. Should I cut my losses (Pushing 1k already) and just bail out now and wait for this "correction" whatever it is to pass? Or hold the course.

When looking at global equity markets, what are some good conclusions to come to or comparisons to check when looking at various European exchanges through the day?

I'm getting a system back up and running that pulls closing values of several major exchanges when they close just to keep track of them at a distance (just to be aware of major swings).

I'm particularly curious if there are any correlations I should be aware of. Ultimately, I'm concerned with foreign exchange implications. I understand there is an inverse relationship between equity and currency values, but wanted to ask yall if you were aware of any specific correlations otherwise, particularly regarding eurozone exchanges. Frankfurt seems like the commander of the bunch, but I'm still curious. If you have any books/resources you can suggest, I'd appreciate that as well. Any information, euro-related or not, would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Why is a stock's closing price different on different websites?

If RadioShack (RSH) closes above $1 tomorrow, the final day of the month, it will meet the NYSE's requirements for "curing the deficiency" of trading under $1 for too long. But looking at today's closing price, different websites — or even different pages of the same site — have different claims about whether RSH closed above or below $1. Yahoo says it closed at 0.99. Google says it closed at 0.994. And NASDAQ says it closed at 0.9945. So far, all of this is explainable as rounding or truncation. But a different NASDAQ page has a different claim. The big number at the top says it closed at $1, which cannot be achieved by rounding or truncating $0.9945, $0.994 or $0.99. Scroll down to where it says "NASDAQ Official Price" and it says the closing price was actually $1.02. Under "Last Five Real-Time Trades," it shows the final trade was at $1.02. This NYSE page shows $0.99 at the top, but then scroll down to the chart, and it says it closed at $1.02. Then scroll down a bit more, and it says that the close was $0.9945, and that the adjusted close was $0.99.

So why are there all these different closing prices? Why is the "NASDAQ Official Price" for the close three cents higher than the seemingly definitive $0.99 adjusted closing price at the NYSE, where RSH trades, even though the NYSE seems to recognize that the final trade was at $1.02? And is the adjusted closing price really the definitive price? Because the asterisk says it's only "adjusted for splits," suggesting the difference between $0.99 and $0.9945 may only be how many decimal places the column is formatted to contain.

This subreddit needs a weekly stickied beginner thread for beginner questions and advice.

The moderators could set up an auto moderator that will sticky a beginner thread for those who want to ask questions. All we need is a stickied thread that is updated with a new one every once and a while and that would take care of a lot of the "noob" questions that are flooding this subreddit. I have seen this idea in other subreddits and it works out great in cleaning up a lot of the beginner posts.

Should I invest in Nintendo shares now, before the holiday season gets closer?

Title pretty much says it. There's 4 popular series that are releasing games soon (Smash Brothers for 3DS on October 3, Sonic the Hedgehog & Pokemon Remakes in November, Smash Brothers for the Holidays, and a Mario Party game sometime next year.)

I believe these could in turn also raise console device sales.

Would it be it be a good idea to get invest in this company now? All advice welcome.

UIHC

Anyone know what's been going on with UIHC recently? It has fallen from $17 to $13 in the past month without any real news. I understand poor housing numbers will be reflected in lower insurance revenues, but UIHC now has a forward P/E of around 9 which seems extremely low for a company with a long term estimated growth rate of 20%.

An interesting view on Alibaba's IPO from a commenter on pando

it is disgusting that Alibaba is allowed to go public in America for so many reasons.

  1. Jack Ma & Alibaba screwed over Yahoo. Yahoo owned 40% of Alibaba for which they invested $1 billion. Jack Ma did not like that he did not own these shares so he used China's lawlessness to force Yahoo to sell him back its shares at much discounted rates. Yahoo lost $40 billion in gains. The story is well known. Google it. In America Yahoo would have just given him the finger and defended its rights to ownership but in China where anything goes Yahoo was screwed. Jack Ma literally took company assets (Alipay) out of Alibaba and put them into his own company that he owned without Yahoo permission and without compensating Yahoo shareholders. This would get you Jail time in America, not hero status.

  2. Google, Facebook, Twitter are not even allowed to operate in China. Why do we help these Chinese companies when they are not even allowing American companies to operate in China ??

  3. Recently Microsoft and other American tech giants have been bullied and blacklisted in China. How is this ok with Obama and America ??? Why do we allow China to screw us over and welcome Alibaba so openly? is it just FEES? is it just FEES that wall street will earn ?

  4. As this article informs Jack Ma will do whatever he wants with Alibaba. I am sure he will screw American shareholders over in endless ways. Already he has a company inside Alibaba doing all sorts of deals within Alibaba and with Alibaba. Essentially Alibaba is still his piggybank.

Whats the true reason we allow this in America? Is it cause Goldman Sachs and others want their fees and dont care about what it means otherwise ?

Alibaba should have been barred from IPOing in America.

You know you're a Stock Addict when...

okay, so this is just something i did on another site i'm on and thought this would be kind of an amusing thread to have on here as well

so, i'll start this off...

you know you're a stock & reddit addict when....

  • ...you get up in the middle of the night to take a leak, and then immediately after you hit up your mobile device or computer to check up on the futures, while at the same time hitting up this sub-reddit to see what the night owls are talking about...

  • ...instead of watching your favorite sports team's game at night, you instead choose to hit up cnbc world / bloomberg to see what's going on in the asian markets...

  • ...you have cnbc world / bloomberg running on your mobile device or tv just before it's time to turn out the lights (sleep)

  • ...you take a break from trading/markets/reddit to run some errands, etc, only to realize how amazingly out of touch you are with the outside world

  • ...when you're in a hospital and waiting for your new born nephew to come to this world, you choose to spend most of that time waiting in the lobby where there is a tv set and you kindly ask someone working in the hospital to change the channel to cnbc (this was before my smartphone days of course :rotfl:)

  • ...you take a vacation and promise yourself that you will not check up on the markets and/or this sub-reddit while you're away, only to break that promise the day of your trip and immediately check up on the markets & this sub-reddit once you get to your destination either on your mobile device or your uncle's computer so that you are up-to-date on the very latest

  • ...anytime you type apple you want to type 'aapl'

  • ...anytime there is a long weekend where the markets are closed on the following monday you are not happy

  • ...you sometimes reminisce the may 6 2010 flash crash and you hear ben lichtenstein squawking it up in the pits in your dreams

  • ...pissed as hell when your computer experiences issues connecting to sje's new chat, that you actually contemplate reformatting your entire machine just to see if that would fix your problem so you can join the rest of this sub-reddit crew in chat as well

  • ...hate work, because you rather be at home trading and posting on this sub-reddit (although, lately i have taken a bit of a sabbatical from work because of my upcoming and impending jaw surgery which is still up in the air at the moment)

well anyway those were a few at the top of my head  how about the rest of you guys? let's hear 'em :p

Beware Of The Markets After The Alibaba IPO

There is an old saying in this business, buy the rumor and sell the news. Well, tomorrow the Alibaba IPO (BABA) will finally happen. This IPO is expected to be the biggest IPO in history as the Chinese internet company is expected to be valued at around $160 billion or more. Wall Street needs to keep the stock market buoyant and jovial before this company debuts for business. After all, who would want to own this stock if the markets were tanking and selling off.

In 2007, there was a highly anticipated IPO that became public, that was called Blackstone Group L.P. (NYSE:BX). This was a huge deal for Wall Street and the markets traded just fine ahead of the IPO. Once the stock went public in June 2007 it was just four months later that the Dow Jones Industrial Average peaked and the start of the Great Recession began. Could the Alibaba IPO be signaling the same thing for stocks? After all, the Federal Reserve is expected to end its quantitative easing program in October 2014. Traders and investors must beware of the markets after this IPO. In the past, history has told us to watch for topping signs after such a euphoric IPO opens for trading, there has never been this much excitement for IPO in history. So beware of the markets after the Alibaba IPO.

Are stocks percentage always right / relevant?

Hey people,

Today on my autoinstalled app Stocks (from yahoo) I have a couple apps on watch, including the which I assumed ETF MVAC) which, selling for 0 cent, would be a penny stock, right? Now about MVAC, it went up to 2 cent, being 1900%, and went back down to zero, only saying -100%, and today back up to 1 cent, 100%. Would I have received 1900% of that what I invested if I invested (hating asking 'what if' questions, but I am very curious). Also would I've even been able to buy them, if yes, would I even make as much profit (if at all) as the 1900% say? Much thanks,

Jessmaister.

I totally did not misspell my previous thread and am making a new one, like cereal.

Bull\Bear Tomorrow?

Any predictions on tomorrows Fed talks? Market pretty much ran at the ATH levels all afternoon. Markets has more or less been consolidation this month, we should be seeing an outbreak tomorrow, just not sure if it will be up or down.

I sold everything today and will go full bull\bear on first indication.

Some Questions about this Bull Run

I have a club interview at my school and they will definitely ask a few questions like these:

What have been the driving factors for the bull run in the past five years?

What has the fed been doing for the 10 and 30 year yield curves?

What has the housing market been doing since the mortgage crisis?

Hearing some other voices on these subjects would help.

As GoPro Inc Tops Out, Buy At These Levels

GoPro Inc (NASDAQ:GPRO) has been one of the hottest stocks around lately and has gone parabolic. Today GoPro Inc (NASDAQ:GPRO) got as high as $70.90 just shy of my target. This name is very volatile and if today is indeed the top then we could see a massive drop. There will be bounces along the way and as a trader I will be looking for levels to capture theses upticks to profit from. The levels I have isolated are as follows $63.50, $61.25 and finally $57..00

Oil Into Key Support: Near Term Low Likely

The United States Oil Fund LP (NYSEARCA:USO) dropped sharply again today after oil inventories showed a bigger build than expected. With this fall, oil is now into major support and likely ready to bounce. In addition, there is major negative sentiment on oil with analysts calling for sharply lower prices. This tells us that the opposite view is likely the next move. Note the key support chart on the United States Oil Fund below.

I saw it when it was at 95% up.

And then I didn't go for it because I was afraid it might fall like in my horrible attempt to day-trade LOCO on its IPO date which instantly fell by nearly a dollar with unbelievably perfect timing at the moment I went in and subsequently led me to panic-sell before it then proceeded to rise about $10 from there and stay in the $30s ever since and because I remembered the rules that I typed for myself yet just have never obeyed until now about not trading on emotion as well as the fact that I don't want to make this kind of profiting a habit because I wouldn't want to be sitting at a desk all day trying to day-trade and ruining my eyes with my already pretty bad eyestrain that would make me suffer more in my day-to-day life and thus not allow me to even enjoy my money which would defeat the purpose of trading.

Enter Your Tesla Motors Inc Stock Trade Here

After the comments made by the CEO of Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), Elon Musk, where he said the stock price is "Kind Of High Right Now," investors were quick to run for the exits. On Friday, the 5th of September, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) fell in the early morning, then traded sideways for the remainder of the day. The stock continued its sideways move, even as the major indexes had a sharp reversal to the upside, managing to end the session positive.

The weakness in the latest TSLA move, and current chart pattern on the 10min, as well as the 60 minute chart, leads me to believe that Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) could have more downside in the cards. If the current bearish set up on Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) plays out, leading the stock lower, day traders can use the following levels for quick long scalps (buying the stock for quick bounces higher). The first level will be $269.69, the second and major level of support is $263.84. For these levels to work out as support which can be bought for bounces, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) must open above the levels mentioned and not have any kind of consolidation above them. If you can prepare yourself and read the charts properly, should TSLA touch those levels, then you will have a great quick trade opportunity. I will be trading this stock at the levels mentioned should the chart pattern still support this reasoning at that time and preparing to enter TSLA for a swing trade as well.

Thoughts on iRobot (IRBT) short term and long term?

I havent paid too much attention to this company over the years, but after reading so many rave reviews about their products, I recently got a Roomba 880, and this thing is amazing. As a result, I have now started looking into the company and it seems to be priced at it's 52 week low at the moment.

Over 90% of it's revenue comes from the consumer market, with very little real competition up til now. Dyson is about to come out with their own "roomba", which potentially could hurt IRBT (especially if the pricing is close).

They also have some revenue from the military sector, which has nothing but upside potential as far as I can tell.

Current P/E is high at @ 37, but the PEG not so much.

Any thoughts about buying now for short term or holding long term?

A question about CFDs and gearing

Evening all.

I've taken up trading CFDs as a hobby and I have a query about how long to leave my positions open.

Let's say a share increases steadily over 10 days. I open a position every morning and close it at the end of every day, and each day it increases by 1%. If I instead leave it open constantly for 10 days, will I still get the same return? It still rises 10% over 10 days but the difference between the opening and closing values is greater.
