When do you think the Fed will move to hike interest rates? Poll within.

okay so i just thought to whip up this quick poll on here to see where most of us are at as far as rates are concerned here in the u.s.

i'm very curious to hear where some of you are with you thinking for when we will see the first fed rate hike here ...

vote & and post your vote and if you'd like to chime in with your rationale please feel free to add that to your post here on this thread as well as it is most certainly welcomed and encouraged!

here is the link to my web poll-

and here are the results of the poll-

since i am the creator of this web poll i will go ahead and do the honors of voting first...

i went with q4 of 2015 for the first fed rate hike ... contrary to popular belief (the belief of the talking heads that is...) i do think we will finally see the first raise in rates in the second half of this year 2015 ... i think extending it out another year or two is really just pushing it imho

what say you redditors of this here stock market subreddit?

i'm really looking forward to hearing some good feedback on here with this ...

i hope that poll link i posted above worked for you guys :)

The Fed, REITs, and Other Creditors

As everyone knows, the Fed is going to raise interest rates sometime soon. In the past I haven't paid much attention to interest rates and their effect on the economy and recently I've grown curious. I was wondering if anybody had any useful insight on how the raise in interest rates will affect stocks such as Visa and other creditors and then how it will affect the stock price of REITs and banks. Any insight from you more experienced folk would be an awesome learning experience and very useful. Thanks!

Question: How exactly is the buy / sell executed? Is it the same everywhere?

Hey,

I would like to know more about the process of buying and selling stocks, as in what happens after I buy and sell, and when the price is set for what I've bought.

My Account is under Sparkasse (Germany), and the first time I bought stocks, I bought 1200€ of one stock, and paid the next day ~1260€ (excluding commisions of the broker). So when I decide "I want this stock" and right there buy 100 for 1€ each, do I get them for 100€? (Excluding commision fees)

How long till it is registered in my portfolio? What happens if the price of the stock rises or falls after buying untill registered?

Does it matter during what time I buy? (Germany buying U.S. Stocks)

I buy today, have it in portfolio next day, is there a quicker option?

I think that's it for now, thanks for your help!

Can someone explain to me what those giant spikes are during after hours trading?

I'm a novice when it comes to stocks, so I was hoping someone here could help me understand something. I notice a lot of stocks I watch have huge spikes after hours, even though they don't really seem to really affect much. Can someone explain what is happening when this occurs?

For example, here is $AAPL's after hours yesterday. What causes this?

How do you create a bot trading program?

The title says it all. If I had a trading plan I wanted to automate using a bot with minimal human interference, how do I actually make/get one?

Are there trading programs out there that you can customise to do this, or do I need to buy/have made/make a program myself? If so, what would be the best way to do this?

Bot trading is obviously huge in all global markets and I am very interested in the topic. Absolutely all or any information is very much welcome as I have not been able to find anything much online.

Cheers, reddit!

30% growth for both BRK.A and BRK.B in 2014? Why am I even trying to pick stocks...

I had a pretty good 2014 and probably netted about 20% increase in my portfolio in my first year of investing in the market. Some of my key winners were Under Armour, Carmax, and Facebook. But digging through some new potential investments I noticed that Berkshire's stocks increased 30% over the past year. Both BRK.A and BRK.B.

Is that info correct or am I missing something? Part of me thinks I should just pour most of my money into BRK and call it a day... I mean WTH... 30% is darn hard to beat... especially compared to the market: DOW +10%, NASDAQ +15%, S&P 14%

Fast paced buy/sell game?

Hi everyone, are there any games or ways to view historical charts in a way that allows the "player" to pick points to buy and sell? Basically I'm looking for a way to test my ability to predict trends without having to wait around for live data. Any ideas? I'm inclined to just display or print old charts and use a piece of paper to reveal the graph, but it would be nice to have something plot your buy/sell points and calculate gains/losses.

Thanks for any ideas!

Buying GOOG before earnings... opinions?

Made some fairly successful trades this week buying AAPL before its 10Q was release and still sitting on it. I've had my eye on GOOG for a while but it keeps heading south. Stock is currently nearing a 52 week low which could be decent buy in opportunity if earnings estimates hit. Last years Q4 EPS was $6 / share and it had some positive movement for the following month. You guys think we'll see an EPS of 7.10 or more?

What happens when Cushing is full?

Bloomberg says they have 39 M barrels there as of Jan 23, increasing at a rate of 2 M/week.

According to this page I found (http://ift.tt/1K6N9QP) the total capacity of the Cushing facility is 46 M. Out of this 46 M total capacity, there is some inflexible "shell" capacity that they need to leave open - around 20%.

I have found other data that seems to contradict the first page - storage at Cushing peaked in 2013 at around 50 M barrels (http://ift.tt/1zCtOHG).

How can I find out which producers are storing oil here?

Weekly reports that heavily weigh the pricing of WTI Crude Oil.

I don't know if I am preaching to the choir or not, but I wanted to give you two sources of information I watch to make my own decisions of the oil prices, specifically US oil due to our recent surge of market shares from the Shale Boom.

First, every Wednesday, at 9:30 AM Central, the US Energy Information Administration reports weekly figures on crude oil inventories. The last two weeks show that supply is still on the rise, which is causing the oil prices to go down. Please note that this report lags by a week.

http://ift.tt/153AdWY

Another report worth mentioning is the rig count provided by Baker Hughes. The North American rig count is released weekly at noon central time on Fridays. The international rig count is released on the fifth working day of each month.

http://ift.tt/12c2bUN

The US is making the required rig cuts to reduce supply (287 rigs since Dec), however due to the lag of production yield, we are still seeing a supply influx. The lag of supply decrease is evident. Many people are monitoring the supply to wait to see that inevitable decrease in production before they dip their tows in the water.

Again this is my own speculation, I work in the industry and currently enrolled in a masters program for Petroleum Engineering. I hope this information helped someone, sorry if it is common knowledge!

Small Energy Company Stock on the Rise

I have been watching small energy stock drop along with the price of oil and gas, but as gas prices rise so is the share price. An example of a company with these trends is EVEP EV Energy Partners LP. In the last five months it has dropped from $41.80 a share to $12.06 a share; that is a 70.88% decrease. Now is the time to invest because their shares are on the rise once again. In the last two days at the NYSE (1/23 and 1/26) the share price has risen $2.56 that is 21.23% in two days. In my opinion, it can only go up from here.

I've made a good amount of money since I bought airlines when I saw that oil prices were going down (since the planes use so much oil, cheaper prices save the companies a lot of money). Now, I am wondering if oil prices will go down further, or if I should take my money out of airlines. If anyone has an opinion I would love to hear it.

This is a fairly new stock for me, but I bought 5 contracts of the June 33 calls during yesterday's dip near the market open. This was admittedly a poor decision on my part as I did not research it thoroughly beforehand, but now that i'm looking at the analyst estimates, it's looking more and more like a solid move. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts.

I'm out of bonds also.

I hate /r/investing. That sub is ridiculous. Anywho.

http://ift.tt/1y01Zla

Nice little easy 10%+ gain from Jan. of last year for little risk. If you look at my prior post I sold out of pretty much all my positions in my taxable stock holdings a friday a week two ago. That was a good deal. I'd have been down thousands now. I posted about it here.

http://ift.tt/1xS0XfD

Got downvoted of course in /r/investing and upvoted here. Short term I don't like anything.

Everything is messed up. You see that little dip back in 2013 in that bond return fund? That was when rates were supposed to go up and didn't. I didn't think they were going up so I bought. Do you see any dips right now? I sure don't. I think rates are going up this time but the bond fund sure doesn't think so. That bond fund is tracking about as high as it EVER has. It is setup for a huge over reaction. Long term it won't matter but short term I think we could see a big dip. I think bonds will stay low over all but that NAV graph is worrisome to me.

http://ift.tt/1y01ZBx}

Pigs get slaughtered. I'm out at 11.44. To much risk for not much gain in my opinion to hold in the short term. SEC yield is a shitty 2.5% at that price.

My long term IRA's and 401ks I'm just leaving alone. Added some BCD's in the Roth. They are the only thing I feel like has a decent value at the moment. Time to keep paying on the house.

Taking the crappy guaranteed 3.8% and going home (and paying on the home). Few more months I'll make the last payment on my house.

I got the funds now if I liquidated one Roth but that would be pretty pointless. Pretty much a forgone conclusion at this point. Long term do I think I can beat 3.8% probably. But I lived though 1999 and 2008. I don't fell like dumping 100k into the market right now. Nothing looks good to me that I want to risk it.

That said I am picking up pennies in front of a steam roller with my rental property mortgage (ARM) and my student loans (~2.25%).

Just didn't want to be that debt heavy. Figured I'm going to need a place to live so I should at least own one place.

What's your take on IBM?

The news feeds aren't cooperating, and I am about to be late for work, but didn't I read that they missed revenue but BEAT profits? I was looking to hop in to $IBM this morning if there was any upward movement, but it's still floundering, even falling.

PE went from >12 to <10. Some of their departments are diminished, but they seem to be growing cloud services. I would think beating profits would have caused some kind of bounce. What's there to know about IBM that I don't?

Question about a company being bought

SWKS (Skyworks Solutions) Before Earnings [xpost /r/investing]

I've been looking at Skyworks Solutions (SWKS). They're expected to beat their second quarter earnings estimates and look like a solid buy and hold company.

  • Positive and growing ROE of > 10%

  • Debt / Equity of < 0.2

  • Reasonable Forward P/E of 14.5

  • Crushed analyst estimates for 2014 and expected in 2015 also

  • Smartphone LTE market continues to expand with LTE in China

I'm expecting a boost before earnings on 1/22. What do you think?

What is the difference of the same stock on two different platforms ie TSX vs NYSE

Im confused on what seems like a moronic thing but here it goes, be nice. Im getting confused when a company is listed on two different trading exchanges and I can understand the price difference but how come one would offer a dividend and one wouldn't?

For example, Td and Td.to, they both trade at a similar price but one offers a dividend and the other does not. So why would anyone not purchase the one with a dividend if its the same price?

My only thought is that one tracks American performance and the other is the Canadian portion? uj

Hi there!

My name is Marcus and I'm from Sweden. Here in Sweden, when you attend the last year of "gymnasiet" you have to write a big assignment on a subject that is relative to the program that you are studying. In my case, the program is economics and I'm writing my assignment about the stockmarket and brokers.

I would really appreciate if someone on here, who works as a broker, could PM me or leave a comment so I could send you a quick interview (about 6 small questions).

Thanks in advance! Marcus

Can anyone explain this about ETFs?

Feel free to tell me I am completely lost if that's the issue. But ETFs index a sector or set of stocks, yes? So the price pressure on the ETF is primarily a reflection of price of the stocks or goods in question. However, since the ETF trades like a stock, there must be some price pressure based on the buying and selling of the ETF itself -- yes or no?

Let's say someone manages to create hype for USO, but the price of oil remains flat. Assuming they pump an extra 5% buy volume in a day, how much, if at all, would that impact the price of USO?

How is margin interest calculated?

lets say i have 25k in a day trade account. this lets me borrow 75k for non leveraged stocks n funds

how much am i paying for this margin loan? fidelity says its base rate is about 7 percent. so for a single day, would that be 7 divided by 365 times 75000 = interest cost?

thats 1200 a day, hell of a lot of money. if my math is right (which it hardly ever is), could u tell me places with significantly lower margin rates? whats IB rates? i checked and of course found nothing. on this subject, it appears the brokers are intentionally vague.

thanks everyone

Anyone know where I can find who the top 5 owners of a certain public company were in a certain year ?

That is, I would input a year and a company, and the top 5 owners with # of shares/pct. of shares owned would pop up.

by the way, by "top" I mean those who have the largest holdings in the company. If you know where I can get this info for a specific year, that'd be great, but having the information just for 2014/2015 would be useful as well...

New to investing and looking for some help

I've recently started investing and I've read up a bit, but I've got a couple of questions I'd like some help with. From what I've read a couple of things to look for are return on invested capital (of the company) and says to compare:

Operating earnings/invested capital

Also, earnings quality:

(Earnings - cash flow)/market capitalization

The online trading tool that I use doesn't seem to label everything exactly the same way and I'm having some difficulty matching everything up. I'm also not sure about the mod rules here for naming which tool I'm using, so I'll leave that out for now I guess.

What should I be looking for to find these calculations for the stocks that I'm looking at?

What are the top oil stocks to own once we see oil turn around and start to go up (which we all know will eventually happen)?

I want to prepare. To me, this is the investment opportunity of a decade. It's like living and trading in 2009. I don't know if oil is done going down, or if it'll even start to head back up soon after it bottoms. But I do know that it eventually will and I want the best oil stocks, in terms of potential performance, when it happens.

Let's prepare! What are your top choices?

My number one is SDRL. It has gone down WAY too much. It is the best of all the deep drillers. It has new rigs and great contracts. It acted quickly when the prices of oil started dropping by cutting it's dividend.

Settlement of Calendar Spreads - How Does this Work?

Hypothetical: let's say it's Jan 17, 2015 and AAPL is at 100. My portfolio contains:

Long 1 Jan 23, 2017 Call Option for AAPL at 60 Short 1 Jan 17, 2015 Call Option for AAPL at 90 20,000 USD cash

How does settlement work? The in-the-money option will be assigned. The portfolio contains no AAPL stock to be called away. Is my 2017 option exercised or am I cashed into AAPL stock at the closing market rate and then it is called away? (My understanding is the latter)

What happens if AAPL closes at 300? Then I owe 210/share on the contract and the only way to square with my broker is to exercise the long call. Will my broker do this automatically? Will they be upset with me or is this routine? Am I guaranteed the 5:30 price in this circumstance?

Does this process vary from broker to broker or is it the same everywhere?

Trying to understand all the risks of leveraging up around exchange mechanics.

GPRO another -7% slam, Citi defending with $94 target, currently $53

In a report published Tuesday, Citigroup analyst Jeremy David reiterated a Neutral rating and $94.00 price target on GoPro Inc (NASDAQ: GPRO).

In the report, Citigroup noted, “After our CES meeting with GoPro CFO Jack Lazar last week, we wrote that Lazar had stated margins on the $130 HERO device were ‘significantly below' corporate average. While we continue to believe this is the case – see below for our analysis – we are amending the statement to read that Lazar only confirmed that the HERO is a lower price point, lower cost capture device. Nonetheless, our BOM analysis implies that the BOM on the $130 device is likely no less than ~$90, implying a gross margin of 23% assuming an ASP to GoPro of ~$117 (i.e., a 10% retail margin), about 20 points below the corporate average.”

GoPro closed on Monday at $56.78.

How to know where to invest?

I'm 16 and looking to get into value investing to generate substantial returns (with risks of course). I have ~5k available to me. I've read up on what ratios and other information on stocks are, and what they mean, but at this point, I just don't know how to look for a stock to invest in. What I mean by that, is how do I find a stock and say, "Oh I believe this stock will rise based on x, y, and z". How do I approach this? Anyone have experience with Day Trade The World ?

Sorry of this isn't the best sub to post this in but I wasn't sure where else to put it. I saw that there were spots open at a branch near me but I'm not 100% sure whether it's legit or not. Just wanted to know if anyone had any experience and would recommended going for it.

How does one trade in a bear market?

I assume 2015 will be the year of the bear, so I am planning accordingly, now that I am trying to get my new fledgling trading account up and running. How would one trade a falling stock market? Aside from buying dips or shorting, are there any "short ETFs" for instance? I am considering buying silver in a few months for starters, but what other ways are there? I want to buy an instrument that shorts the market essentially. I will also consider options but not for the purposes of this question. Sorry if this is a noobish question, I don't know as much as I should about the markets.

Oh I answered my own question after writing this, but I am still looking for input. Here's what I found - http://ift.tt/1wN56O6

Stocks to supplement income.

Hey guys,

Right now I'm going long on AAPL and I'm pretty happy with it. I also purchased a small amount of ONCS just to have because I had some extra cash in my e-trade account.

But, I'm looking to get into some short-term stocks as supplemental income. I would like to earn roughly $500-1000 a month. I'm not sure how much is needed to get started. I currently have $1500 to use. Although it would be nice to have your opinion on certain stocks, even a general sector would be appreciated.

Something feels off to me. Your thoughts?

Is it just me or does something feel off? Bond yields are in the dirt. Stocks are at highs. Interest rates are allegedly going up (hahah). Oil is in the dirt. Other commodities are down too. http://ift.tt/v8A5vL

Europe shit the bed.

I don't know. Something just doesn't feel right to me. I'm basically out of the market now with my taxable account. I sold out early Friday morning. I put the Roth into BCD's because that is the only sector that doesn't look elevated right now to me.

I got out the money I wanted to use in the short term. Decided to pay off a chunk of the house and take the 3.8%. I am pickup pennies in front of the steam roller with my student loans and I still have rental property mortgaged so if rates do rise I can let those chew into it a little though it is an ARM, but I got several more years before it adjusts.

Only one thing I'm relatively confident on. Rates are going to stay low. That means more QE or the market is coming down.

If the market comes down more people are going to flock to bonds and drive the yield price down. So again rates stay low.

If rates rise home loans go up also. That will drive down home prices. So again rates will stay low.

Either way I think bond yields are going to stay low. I don't think the market is going to go up much this year.

I don't see anything that is going to drive inflation in the short to medium term.

What do you all think?

Learning to day/swing trade

Hey guys, interested in the world of investing, and have studied a fair amount, as well as currently learning under a mentor, however he suggested I open an account with a simulator or market learning tool. I live in Canada, so my question is, what is the best program/simulator to learn on and trade off of? I'm hoping for something a little more in-depth than something like investopedia's simulator. Something similar to a real trading platform.

MetaTrader and the stockmarket?

Maybe I'm being an idiot but I've been playing with a demo account on my phone using MetaTrader as I learn about trading. I am using MetaTrader4 as my professor said it's the standard as most people haven't transitioned to MT5 yet. Anyway I don't know how to access Stocks to speculate.

It says on the FXCM site I can trade using multiple markets, but I'm not sure how? Is it not available on the mobile app?

I posted here over /r/investing because it was about market access, if it's the wrong subreddit I'm sorry.

ECB Stimulus' effect on the Markets

I was wondering if any of you clever folk out there could explain in some detail how the ECB stimulus that Mario is going to announce in the very near future is going to effect the stock markets, in particular the DAX and the FTSE.

I'm sure some of you are waiting with baited breath in anticipation of the announcement... As I know there is a lot of money to be made!

As I understand it, stimulus eases pressure on the economy thus causing a bull market.
