Hey, would like serious advice on trading and help from experienced traders.

This will be a open book, please read and help a passionate, hard working individual, desperate to earn a simple life;

Full disclosure, I want to earn a wage trading stocks / currency.

What I know? I have read;

The Disciplined Trader by mark Douglas.

Market Wizards by Jack Schwager.

New Market Wizards by Jack Schwager.

Stock Market Wizards by Jack Schwager.

Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefevre.

Options made Easy by Guy Cohen.

I have also read a lot of PDF documentation about trading which could and most likely be charlatan strategies.

My grandfather is teaching me as much as he can but he is getting old and slower today (76). I live in the UK and know how to read charts and understand the broker IG Index.

I have learnt all about leverage, spotting, reversals, day trading, margin, spread betting among much else reading all this material.

About me; I am 26 years old, I am desperate for a opportunity and I am really passionate about the stock market and want to pursue it. I have a degree in Cultural Studies and have a small bank I can begin with (£1000).

I have demoed (IG Index offers a demo account) trading S&P 500 but not to much success.

I really need a mentor or guidance on what material I should read, which market would best suit my need and help trading and making money. I am not a greedy individual and money itself its not an aspiration of mine to hoard but I am finding it increasingly hard to find a Job in the UK. I am only looking to earn enough to live, learn and grow which is approx.£800 a month including rent and bills. I also am looking for any information on the legitimacy of tools and software that can help predict trends, reversals etc etc.

Please share any advice and if you can offer one on one help, pm me and I will share my Skype ID.

I know this is a real long shot but I must try everything to find experienced traders.

Thank you ever so much if you read this, this far. I can not express enough how any help, however small will really really be appreciated!!

Culli

edit: I have this post made on /stocks too, want to reach both audiences

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 6/1/15

Hey all!

Finally I'm back in action after a week and a half off to let my eye heal and to do some trade analysis and revamp my rules! I was originally only planning on taking 2 days off and enjoying the long holiday weekend, but when it rains it pours I guess, lol. Anyway I'm back now and will be back to making watchlists like always each night. I revamped some of my rules and tightened up my criteria for specific types of patterns I was trading since I was getting a bit sloppy with them so I'll probably be trading less and being a bit more selective also. The biggest difference you'll notice is that I am eliminating all low volume stocks (anything that trades < 500k on average). For swing trades I will still trade these but they're just not working well for day trades lately so they go in the penalty box til further notice! Here are my plans for tomorrow:

CEMP (long):

I see two potential entries for this. The first will be off the short term trend which would be to see it drop under $36.50 and then reclaim it. Entry would be $36.40 to $36.30 after it creates a higher low. If it will not reclaim $36.50 then I will watch to see how it acts around $36.00 which is the intermediate trend and if it can hold $36.00 I will go long there with a stop under $35.50 or so. Basically I want to see it hold one of its current trends with the goal being for it to break $37.00 and run to $38.50-40.00.

ACRX (long):

$3.50 is the key here. Nice volume expansion on Friday and over $3.64 it is clear to fill the gap up $4.00 so I'll be watching fro any sign of strength at/around $3.50. If I can catch a $3.50ish entry I will keep my stop loss pretty tight, around $3.40. The R/R is really nice on this one so I will try to be pretty aggressive if it sets up well.

Since I am trying to be more selective going forward I am going to keep it to just these two on my focus list, but I have a bunch of other good ideas that aren't ready yet based on my criteria so I will just point out the key levels I'm looking for on them:

NBIX (long) - Daily breakout over $45. Watching for it to tighten up against that level

HLF (long) - $52.50-$53.00 seems like a key level for this bull flag. Waiting for it to tighten up or show some volume expansion for breakout to $55+

OTEX (short) - Perfect bear flag breakdown under $42.20

DATE (short) - Setting up for a parabolic short. Needs three more green days in a row to meet my criteria. This can also be a late day fade 3pm+ if it does not continue higher from here

LLY (short) - Not expecting this to hit my criteria in terms of percentage, but it may in terms of # of days, so likely want to play this as a late day fader 3pm+

ESI (short) - Again looking for either a parabolic push to $7+ or a late day fade after 3pm

REN (long) - Parabolic bounce candidate if it closes red tomorrow. Eyeing possible bounce off $1.00

FLWS (short) - $9.50 is a key level. Watching to short pops if it cracks it or anticipate with entry $9.80-10.00 and swing it

DAR (long) - Nice bull flag forming but needs a few more days to tighten up. Just on my radar for now

Hope everyone has had an awesome weekend and it's good to be back! Feel free to email me with questions or post comments below!

Is there a bubble about to pop in China?

The Shanghai index has more than doubled in the past year, is there any substance behind this? With the huge dip last week is anyone considering shorting them this week?

Also, what do you make of the ghost-cities they are building? Seems like a way to artificially prop up a housing market to me.

I'm back! Here's a blog post on what I've been doing the last week!

Hey guys, so I've been outta commission cause as you know I planned to take a few days off...well on the 2nd day off I scratched my f'ing cornea and then it got infected so it has taken over a week to heal so I couldn't trade at all last week. Anyway in the mean time I decided to do some trade analysis on the last several months of my trading and I did a blog post about it here: http://ift.tt/1AFjgIt

Feel free to ask questions or comment on the blog and I'll answer either here or there! I'll be back in action and making a watchlist for Monday tomorrow and then will be back to normal :)

Two stocks on my watch list

I am by no means an expert but thought I would share/get some feedback on two stocks I am watching. Chart links are below.

OREX - http://ift.tt/1JfBJNo

DRRX - http://ift.tt/1cqqgxl

OREX looks like a falling wedge to me. Volume supports theory as well. I think a strong base is forming to push through $5.10.

DRRX is a hard call. If you ignore the obvious out-liar push it is a rising wedge pattern. The brown line forms the top part of the wedge. However, it looks like a strong top is forming around $2.70 also, making it appear to be an ascending triangle. I think it is a triangle waiting to break through but am interested to hear what others think.

Any stock with negative correlation to interest rates?

A rise in interest rates is imminent, and usually stocks fall in value following an increase in interest rates as this increases the time value of money. Are there any stocks or etfs that have a negative correlation with ir? (ie go up when interst rates increase?)

Synergy PLC (SYR) shares drop 16%! What do you think as an short-term investment opportunity?

Synergy's (SYR) shares dropped 16% today on the news that the FTC was considering blocking the merger with US group Steris Corporation, amid concerns that their plans to domicile in the UK might cause problems.

So with such a drop, what do you think about a short-term investment? Do you think the FTC will block the move? If so, will the share price drop down to the circa 1,400 it was in September last year?

Looking for other opinions.

I swing/channel trade and currently use freestockcharts.com for my channel annotations which is sufficient. But I want the capability to draw trend lines on a 3 month chart, and then zoom out to a 1 year and draw more lines while the 3 month lines are still on the graph.

tl;dr which trading platform can I zoom in and out on while drawing trend lines that will stay on the chart

Hi, I'm thinking of placing some long straddles with options on equity. european and american market only (market cap > billions, I can only trade relatively big compnaies with my broker unfortunately). The advantage is that i dont need to know exactly what happens to the stock (ie up or down) as long as it moves a lot in one of the two directions. Is there any stock someone knows which is expected to move following changes (i know a lot of macro data is being released today)

5/26 Watchlist

Since there has been a lack of watchlists lately, I thought I would just throw my basic watchlist in. Every stock here usually holds trend nicely (excluding onty).

Ticker Plan
KUTV putting it down just in case volume picks up. Play it safe. Big former runner.
PBIB would like to see a ramp up off of the 1.50 mark. Extremely low float stock so beware of squeezing. Usually a good fader but play it safe.
AVEO 2.20 strong support, might ramp up off that mark. Good potential fade off of 2.50 mark. Beware of quick fake spikes.
RENN retest 4, fail, fade. Normally holds trend very well.
ONTY 3.50 parabolic. Play it safe, let it test a few times and fail. Usually fades.
ISR seemed to base at 1.75, possibly will put in a long trend.

Advice for a two week long stock market game against my class?

Everyone in my class has one month to trade and the top portfolio gets an extra 5 points on our average. Penny stocks are not allowed. I am currently invested in YHOO 500 shares at 42.23 and 500 shares at 43.19 because I think that the recent drop in price due to the IRS thing was a massive overreaction. Due to a few bad investments, my total portfolio value is now $100,425.25 and I have $57,077.25. Any advice for what I should be doing for the next two weeks?

How I Am Trading PBR and PBMD Tomorrow (with pictures)

LET THIS JUST BE A WARNING THAT I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU LOSE ON THESE STOCKS. Do not trade it if you can't handle the craziness that is these stocks.

I thought I would make this post to make up for my recent shitposts.

How I traded them today: I didn't...... Literally I didn't even bother to get a position, I figured they would have both done this. I am just super short bias and didn't go long on the dips. To anyone that says "oh yeah I am sure you blew your account up" (you know who you are ;), here you go: http://ift.tt/1AgawbV. I didn't trade today. I thought I would make this post just to save anyone money or a lot of headache.

Tomorrow on PBR and PBMD I highly suggest to not short. Even some of the best traders lose. Let this be a warning to shorts:

Tim Grittanis Loss: http://ift.tt/1R56jvH

InvestorsLives loss: http://ift.tt/1AgawbX

Nikkorico's Loss (biggest I've seen): https://twitter.com/Nikkorico_/status/601147333955325953

Now if you REALLY wanted to short then here is how I would plan going through it:

I only considered getting a position at the beginning of the day. I thought better of it and decided to wait for a lower high once it holds. Here was my thought process: http://ift.tt/1R56hUI. Normally I would have gotten a position but I knew this thing was already squeezing a lot and didn't want to get caught up in it. I guess when it broke I should have gotten long but never mind that. ISR was similar: http://ift.tt/1Agaxwv. You can see how safe I am playing these stocks, tomorrow will be no different. I normally do not play it this safe but when stocks have the ability to squeeze over 100% I am not going to risk it. It is better to not trade then to trade and lose. Tomorrow will be the exact same, play them safe or lose a ton your choice. Also you need to respect you risk/reward (mental stoploss) and cover your position. There is no reason to blow your account up on 1 stupid trade.

How to long them:

Might I add that this is a bit safer then shorting but still carries a lot of risks (obviously). When a stock turns trend, it can literally drop 50 cents in 10 seconds. Let this be a warning. Also might I add that both stocks have RAN OVER 100% IN A DAY. This is, in my opinion, the most effective way of trading stocks like these while going long: http://ift.tt/1R56jvJ. Here is what I suggest not doing (if you are going long: http://ift.tt/1AgawbZ. I wouldn't get in right off the bat (in the morning). Instead I would wait for any dips to form and get long on them with a good set risk/reward.

Good luck, if I had any general tips I would say don't trade too many shares to avoid stress.

Gonna be taking a break for a couple days!

Hey guys/girls,

My trading the last week or so has been really shitty so I am going to take a break and reset for a couple days. Bottom line I'm making stupid mistakes that indicate stress and exhaustion ... three times in the last 2 weeks I have taken big losses on stocks because I meant to take profits and accidentally clicked the wrong button and doubled my position which flipped profits to losses (literally like clicking buy instead of sell by accident, lol). That kinda shit indicates I need to clear my head and stop trading for a few days. It happens when you get burned out staring at charts all day every day so I have a rule for when this happens and it is to just completely disconnect. Stop posting blogs, stop looking for ideas on watchlists, stop trading, don't even open my software, and take care of MYSELF. Just like people need vacations from their jobs cause they get burned out and their boss annoys them to death and they hate their coworkers, full time traders like me need to reset now and then and just get out of the weeds.

Anyway just letting everyone know I won't be posting a watchlist tonight or tomorrow, nor will I respond to emails, PMs, etc so that I can properly disconnect. I will be back to trading on Monday and will respond to emails/PMs on Sunday so feel free to message me and I will check em then!

Also expect a blog post on what I learned after I go back and analyze some trades and stuff ... will show y'all the ugly part of trading which is figuring out WTF you did wrong and why your strategy that has made you money for years suddenly stopped working! 90% of the time it's a mental thing and can be fixed w/ a few small tweaks...so this is what I'm gonna be doing til Monday :)

Talk to ya soooooooooooon!

Chris

EDIT: Just realized Monday is Memorial Day also sooooo I guess I'll be back on Tuesday! Even better! woooooooooooo time to go to vegas and blow all my monthly profits on hookers and blow!

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 5/19/15

Hi everyone!

Nice day today ... everything from my plan went pretty much like I expected though the only one I took was CRMD. I shorted $6.31 and covered at $6.01 and aside from a 2 cent gain on PRAN that was my only trade. I covered the rest of my GMAN swing from $7.20 at $6.62 also. GMAN actually popped and faded green to red just like I expected it to but I didn't reshort (not sure why...guess I just wasn't feeling it, lol). But anyway overall a nice day with a quick and easy 30 cent gain in the morning and then I went to take care of some errands and worked with a couple students for the rest of the day! Here are my plans for tomorrow:

FMSA (long):

I was watching this a few days ago but now it has bounced and tried to hold the 200 day moving average so it seems like a better shot now. I want to see it retest under $9.00 and then recapture it to get long. if I can get an entry like $8.85-8.90 that would be nice and then just keep a stop like $8.75. Initial target will be recent daily highs around $9.30-9.40 but the real breakout happens above those levels so I want to try to be patient if it has the volume. It might not be ready quite yet but I think it's worth a shot.

TCPI (long):

Once again TCPI is testing $4.00. I really would just swing this but I don't like the fact that the market is breaking to new all time highs for a long swing. I like to swing long when the market is in a bounce zone so I'm trying to keep this trade to a day trade only. Any washout under $4.00 in the morning I will go long on this with a mid-$3.80s stop, anticipating it recaptures $4.00. Over $4.10 I think we hit $4.50 relatively quickly.

PTBI (long):

Awesome run in late afternoon today for PTBI right back to that $9.50 daily resistance. I want to see it hold $9.00 in the morning and if it does I will start in long for a run over $9.50 to $10+. This likely has a lot of shorts in it so if it gets moving it could squeeze nicely to $10, $10.50, $11 etc. I will try to keep it to 30-40c risk for $1-2 gain.

ATRA (long):

Possible bounce off $37.00 support area. It seems like this $39.50 area on teh daily has been holding it down since it dropped from $65 to $37 so I feel once it gets over that and holds we will see a bounce back to at least $42-43, possibly $45. In the morning I want to see a pullback toward $39.00 and will get long with a $38.50-38.75 stop loss. The goal is for it to recapture $40

Here are a few other ideas:

MOMO (long) - Heavily shorted and released good earnings after hours today so this could be a big squeezer

GIGA (long) - Again nice earnings after hours so could get some legs tomorrow

CCIH (long) - Still stalking for $15ish breakout

SARA, JOB (long) - Still on watch for Robinhood account. SARA over $0.25 and JOB over $0.82

PRAN (long) - From list last night, I had it at $1.26 today but sold $1.28 cause I needed to go to the Apple store, lol. I'll be watching tomorrow for continuation

ECOM (long) - Watching for $11.50 breakout for $12.50-13 run

Hope everyone had a nice Monday!

Chris

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 5/18/15

Hey hey!

Well last week sucked for me! Weirdly I still made money but I just felt like a jackass the whole week! I was up a little on Monday but spent like 75% of my profits in commissions to do it. Then Tuesday I was up huge so I was on my high horse going into Wednesday, and then fucked it all up and didn't have a single winning trade on Wednesday or Thursday and blew all my gains and went red on the week. Then Friday, my GMAN short from $7.20 rescued me and made my week green...barely! So bottom line is I overtraded on Wed and Thu and just took a lot of stupid trades throughout the week that I didn't need to take. I was just scalping, scrambling looking for anything that would move because I was SO BORED and I just traded a bunch of garbage, and it showed! So sure I finished the week green, but as a teacher I would have given myself an F- for my performance! Anyway, all that said I had a nice chat today with Jesse from Trading Tales of a Psychopath which was pretty cool. He had the same kind of week so we talked about the things we did wrong and asked each other what we are going to do next week to fix it. We both agreed we're going to trade less, think big picture and cut losers immediately rather than wait to see if our anticipation was correct (even for day trades), and try to cut out emotion as much as possible. I had a couple of silly emotional trades last week like when I fat fingered ATEN and accidentally shorted 1000 shares instead of buying 1,000, lol and then it turned around on me and screwed me in both directions after I covered the short for a loss and went long like I meant to. That kind of stuff sets me off because I know it's an avoidable mistake, but because of that I went into tilt mode and hit my max loss on Wed. Luckily my max loss is small because I KNOW MYSELF and I account for my tilty nature when I get pissed by forcing my software to stop me from trading after I hit my max loss. It will literally give me an error message and reject my order, which is pretty awesome...lol. However it's more awesome if I don't hit my max loss obviously which I haven't done in over 6 months! Another issue that I had last week was trying to score small gains in premarket. They were not part of my plan and both Wed and Thu I tried to scalp a small 100 buck gain or something silly in premarket and turned them into losses which just sets the tone of the whole day off wrong; I HATE starting my day with a loss and it just messes w/ my head and usually screws up my whole day! So to prevent that I literally told my broker to disable my account before 9:30am so I can't try to buy premarket (since apparently I can't trust myself right now, haha). Also, I lowered my max loss even more since it's been so long since I came anywhere close to hitting it and I don't feel like I need it to be that big anymore. So all in all I had a crappy week but I at least was able to stay green in the end and refined some risk rules: No premarket/aftermarket trading until further notice, lower max loss, and also I restricted myself to a max of two positions at once so that I can't get into 5 things that are all sitting there not doing anything and then they all end up faceplanting at once and suddenly I'm down a grand in a blink. So next week it's back to the trading I know will work for me and strong focus on my rules and plans, with some new risk management to be there to guide me just in case I have some residual stupidity lingering in my system :)

Here are my plans for tomorrow:

GMAN (short):

I'm already short this from $7.20 and covered half at $6.83-$6.89 on Friday. However it closed on lows and I think it can go lower so if it bounces in the morning back toward the 5 minute 50ema ($6.90ish) I'll be interested in reshorting what I covered for a day trade. On that entry I will keep a stop back over $7.00 and a target of $6.60-$6.30s.

IG (long):

Nice bounce off the bottom on Friday. I'm watching for a continuation of Friday's 5 minute trend. Entry area is $5.55 or so with risk under $5.45 and the goal for the trade will be for it to go red to green and break over $5.75 and into the gap. I could see partial profits at maybe $6.00 and then see how it acts from there.

CRMD (short):

Nice bear flag developing on the daily chart with lows in the $6.25-$6.35 area. Zooming in to the 5 min timeframe I see a nice entry point at $6.33 with risk to $6.43 and a target of $6.00 or so. If it doesn't stay under that tight coil area at like $6.40 on the 5 min chart then I will probably leave it alone until it sets up better, since this could easily still retest over/under $6.50 before breaking down further so I want to keep risk pretty tight. Short on strong volume through $6.35 and keep the stop tight...either it works or it doesn't. No shenanigans! VBLT (short):

I was watching this intraday on Friday for a break of the $5.60-$5.70 area but it never broke. If it can stay under $6 in the morning I still think it goes lower. I would almost expect a gap down and little morning push back over/under $6.00 and then failure from there so that's what I'll be watching for and will have to determine risk along the way...initially I'm thinking just wait for it to push toward $6, put in a lower high and then get short with stop over the high of day for a $5.70ish breakdown and ultimate $5.15-$5.00 target. That can all change though depending on how it opens, so have multiple plans just in case!

Here are a few other ideas:

CCIH (long) - It tried to break out on Friday but failed. It's getting close...sometime this week I think it will go

ATEN (long) - Flagging on the daily right under $5.58 resistance. Over that I think it goes $6+

TCPI (long) - Still watching for it to reclaim and hold over $4.00

SARA, JOB, PRAN, ROX (long) - Potential trades for Robinhood account

CMCM (short) - Getting a bit extended here but don't let it fool you ... it still has 50-60% short interest so it can squeeze. JUST an idea for now

WUBA, GURE (long) - Both flagging on the daily chart

Here's to an awesome week next week!

Chris

I just don't understand how rates rise lowers Bond value

Im speaking here stricly for an etf which holds a variety of 20+ year bonds, TLT for instance. If the fed raises rates, and therefore new issues 20yr bonds have higher yields, then wouldn't an etf holding 20yr bonds rise in value? Becuase the etf is just a aggregated value of all its holdings, many of them being bonds issued in the past 7 years which pay 3% at best.

Another factor is, if interest rates rise, then people will be running from stocks and placing their money in bonds (for the most part). So the price of treasuries on the secondary market would rise with the higher demand.

I know nothing about anything, its clear and obvious..i know. im just trying to get an answer here. So somebody please explain how high interest rates fucks bonds (which are about the most confusing things to understand on earth)

p.s. how do the staples do during rates rises?

Risk of buying $NFLX at current prices?

Saw this Bloomberg video recently http://ift.tt/1EMV9TL

The $2k price target seems like total BS, sorta surprising that Bloomberg would come up with something like this. But how much truth is there to their arguments in general? It does seem like China could be a huge addition to their subscriber base, and they do plan to have a presence in almost 200 countries in about a year. Would it be worth it to buy soon in anticipation of the China expansion? What about any bearish arguments? For example, the idea that Netflix has too much competition to remain on top, or that if a Netflix-exclusive show flops, they will lose tens of millions of dollars.

12 Trading Lessons I've Learned the Hard Way

Hey y'all!

Instead of my watchlist tonight I decided to do a blog post based on something someone asked about in a previous watchlist. For tomorrow I'm just watching GMAN short under $7.20 and TCPI long which I took a swing in today at $3.86. I also have a small piece of GMAN short already and will add in the morning if it cracks. Anyway, here is the post, about 12 of the really important things I've learned as a full time trader so far, and stuff that if I'd have known it when I was just starting out I would have saved myself a ton of money and frustration: http://ift.tt/1A5hRL3

Let me know your thoughts and what the lessons are that you've learned so far in the comments (either there or here) if you want!

Regards,

Chris

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 5/14/15

Hello ladies and gents!

Today was a bit of a frustrating day for me as I finished mostly FLAT even though all my trades from my plan did EXACTLY what I expected them to. This is an indication that I just messed up my execution of the plan. I traded FMSA long at $8.92 into the morning washout just as I planned and sold half of it at $9.12, but then I made the mistake of adding back what I sold a bit too soon and raised my average too much to be comfortable with it. I ended up stopping out for a small loss after I re-added which really messed up my head because I was up nicely on it and just screwed it up w/ bad management. Then I completely disregarded GLUU for some reason, even though it did EXACTLY what I expected which was bounce to $6.60 and then flush to $6.30s. I just didn’t take it…I think because I was annoyed about FMSA! Finally I longed CSLT like I planned but because it didn’t pull back in the morning I was watching the flag breakout around $8.35 and just missed the entry…I got an $8.40 fill and was holding it for 30-45 minutes but kept feeling like a sucker since I wanted to buy this at $8.10 and I just felt it was too high. So ultimately I ended up selling it at $8.42 and then it ran to $9.30s! So, ultimately I think my head just wasn’t in the game today. My plan was perfect and I just executed it poorly. Sometimes this happens when I start off with a trade that doesn’t go exactly the way I expected which is what happened on FMSA, so this is something I’m going to try to work on (coming back after a lame morning). In the mean time here is my plan for tomorrow:

ATEN (long):

This was really trying to break $5.58 today (daily level) so I’ll be watching closely in the morning to see if I can catch a morning flush down to $5.40 and go for the $5.50+ breakout. If I have to take this at $5.50+ then I will keep the stop tight under $5.50 like $5.45 or so, since if it breaks above today’s high it should just go immediately.

NTLS (long):

Very strong stock today on earnings that was driving all the way into the close. I will be watching for hopefully a weak open and red to green move through $8.20, ideally apull to under $8.00 for entry, but if it gaps up I will just wait to see if it develops a trend. This is a somewhat dynamic play so we will have to see how it opens to decide what to do but it definitely looks like it could continue higher tomorrow.

GIGA (long):

Mid-day GIGA released news of a $3m order for one of their products. The stock is a very low float name and has made huge runs in the past so if we see a weak open and red to green off $2.50 or so, this can easily break $3 and go to $3.50, $4.00, who knows. I’ll be watching for any sign of strength in the morning to get long.

Here are a few other ideas that might provide some opportunities:

CCIH (long) – Triggered alert today at $14.50. Still holding its flag so watching for it to break out

GMAN (short) – Still watching $7.20 level for short. If it breaks and holds over $7.50 I will just set an alert at $7.25 and take it off the list but until then I’m keeping it there every day

AAWW (short) – Still somewhat parabolic though it is starting to hold up and flag now. If it doesn’t crack in the next day or two I will take it off the list

TCPI (long) – Stalking closely for $4.00 breakout

ESI, WIN, ATRA (long) – All pretty stretched to the downside and looking ready for bounces soon

NHTC (short) – Watching for push toward $33-35 for parabolic short

SARA (long) – Sleeper!! 😉 Penny stock on watch for Robinhood account … over $0.25. Don’t trade this unless you know what you’re doing…it’s thin as shit and pretty risky, but if you have the right mentality it can give you a quick 40-50% gain

Hope everyone had a nice day!

Chris

I'm considering starting a trading blog based on the idea of testing Entry signals for statistical significance. Is this something you would be interested in reading?

The idea behind the blog would be to use a simple stats test (binomial test), on various entry strategy to see if the entries are actually better then random.

Generally, I'd test for...

  • Higher then at entry

  • Much higher then at entry

  • Much lower then at entry

The much higher and much lower breakpoints would be based on a % of the average true range.

The time frames after entry tested would be for short, medium, and long term, those being relative to the strategy itself. (EG: For an opening range breakout, I'd test 5 minutes after breakout, an hour after breakout, and end of day)

Now I don't subscribe to the idea that a chart is a chart is a chart, and that the same patterns that work on a daily chart work on a 5 minute chart. I also don't subscribe to the idea that the same patterns that work on one trading instrument work on all instruments.

Consequently, for each signal I'm testing, I would test it under a range of conditions, with a couple different symbols for the sake of thoroughness.

Currently, my candidates would be...

Index ETFS SPY QQQ IWM

Non-equity ETF TLT GLD USO

High Beta NYSE TEX MTW MTG YOKU SUNE

High Beta Nasdaq KERX JASO PEIX ODP ACAD

Low Beta NYSE SO ED DUK CMS DPS

Low Beta Nasdaq NBIX ARCP AMAG AGNC MEMP

While this is already a big list of things to be running tests on, it so far likely underweights small caps, which could conceivably behave differently. It is biased towards high volume instruments, which would likely move differently as well.

Testing setups across multiple categories ensures that if a pattern works for only certain types of stocks, it can still be found.

Testing setups across multiple stocks inside the categories is similar to a mini-replication.

Note though that there is still a bit of a bias if we check over the same timeframe, and it turns out the data is correlated, and so anything that looks particularly promising would be replicated later using data from a different time period.

Here are some quick ideas to get a scope of the kind of things I might test. Most of these are daytrading ideas, although I could test longer term position/swing trading ideas if people express interest.

  1. Opening Range breakout, 20 minute opening range.
  2. Opening Range breakout, 20 minute opening range, breakout between 10:00 and 11:00.
  3. Opening Range breakout, 20 minute opening range, breakout between 11:00 and 2:30.
  4. Bounce off even dollar levels among stocks between $100-$200, using VWAP to filter for trend direction. Test $30-$80 stocks with half dollar levels, test $250+ stocks with levels ending in 5 or 0. ($255, $260, $265 ...)
  5. Breakout of last 5 days high
  6. Breakout of last 5 days high when high wasn't set yesterday. (signifying a need for it to 'cool off')
  7. Breakout of last 5 days high when high WAS set yesterday. (Does momentum from yesterday continue?)
  8. Breakout of last 5 days high when high was set yesterday, and close was above the high.
  9. last 5 days high when... Breakout via Gap
  10. when... Breakout happens between 9:30 and 10:00
  11. when... Breakout between 10:00 and 11:00
  12. when... Breakout between 11:00 and 2:30
  13. when... Breakout between 2:30 and 4:00
  14. Entry in direction of breakout if volume in first 5 minutes of breakout is greater then 5% of Average Daily Volume.
  15. idea 14 but filtered by time
  16. idea 14 but filtered by index movement. (take trade only if ES Futures are within 4 ticks of their high of day)

Etc. What I would likely try to do is cover a specific theme every week. So perhaps 5 day high/low breakouts is one week. Opening Range breakouts is another week. Gaps might be a third week, and fade strategies based on ATR or Crabel-style stretch values could be a 4th week.

During the week, I'd cover a number of variations on the idea, and with each variation I'd run the tests on the lists of candidates above. This might tell us things like, 'opening range breakouts on high volume are generally much higher one hour later on high beta NYSE stocks (p<0.01), high beta NASDAQ stocks (p<0.05) but not low beta stocks or major index etfs'.

Is this kind of blog you would be interested in reading? Is there anything specifically you would want to see covered?

  • Commodities?

  • Bonds?

  • Small caps?

  • Low volume stocks (<500,000 average daily volume)?

  • Low price stocks (trading at <$5.00)?

  • News plays (I'd probably filter for gap>10%)?

tldr: If I start a trading blog focused purely on entry signals, and testing those entry signals for statistical significance, would you read it?

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 5/13/15

Hi all!

Sick day today as basically everything from my list worked perfectly. I took CMCM, PNX, CALM and NYMX all for gains though CCIH didn’t really do anything so I left it alone. PNX was an absolute beast bouncing over 25% and CALM and CMCM were both really nice too. I sold half NYMX from $1.60 entry at $1.68 but it didn’t follow through so I sold the rest for a loss and the trade ended up being just about flat overall, but other than that everything was awesome! My list is a bit scarce tonight but I did find a few gems which still haven’t popped yet so here they are:

GLUU (short):

Watching the $6.50 level for a breakdown to short. I’d like to see a quick bounce in the morning to $6.60-6.65 to start short and add on the $6.50 break, all with risk over $6.70 or so. It’s nice since this is very low risk but it’s also kind of a grinder stock so unless it gets some volume it may take all day to materialize into anything. I think maybe a $6.20 target is reasonable.

CSLT (long):

This company released earnings on 5/6 after hours which seemed to have a nice reaction the next day so this feels like follow through momentum from that. I’ll be watching for a weak open/pullback to $8-8.10 to get long and take it for a red to green to $8.60-8.75. Stop will be $7.85-7.90.

FMSA (long):

Another I like for a weak open and red to green move. In this case I want to see a pullback toward the 50ema on the 5 min chart at $8.80-8.90 to enter long, with a stop loss under $8.70 and a target of $9.85-10.00.

I’m not terribly excited about any of these but depending on how the market opens and what else looks good in the morning they may provide some opportunities. Remember you don’t have to trade just to trade. Trade to make money. If the opportunity isn’t there it isn’t there…no big deal, it will be there tomorrow. Here are a few other ideas for the back burner:

PNX, CMCM (long) – Possible red to green moves

PTBI (long) – On watch strictly for day trades

GMAN (short) – Still watching $7.20 level for short breakdown

IPCI (long) – Still watching for $3.15 breakout

AAWW (short) – Stock is holding up but I still think it needs a pullback so if we get a market selloff this will be one of the first to go

TCPI (long) – Still stalking for $4.00 breakout

NKTR (long) – Watching $11.50 area for possible breakout soon

ESI (long) – Interesting in buying washouts under $2.00 for a bounce. Stock has lost 60-70% of its value in just a few days

WIN (long) – Another bounce idea if it can hold and/or set up around $8.50

ATRA (long) – Similar to PNX but not down nearly as much so it won’t be as powerful. Watching over $40 for a bounce to $44-45

Hope everyone had a nice day!

Chris

Anyone shorting Netflix?

Don't get me wrong. I am loyal to Netflix as a user, and I want to see them grow, but the PE (150) seems insane (to my amateur senses). I can't see how that is sustainable.

I've only ever gone long on stocks, and I am probably not brave enough to short now. Just wondering if anyone is taking the plunge. As usual, I welcome people telling me I'm a dumbass if they also tell me why.

The Fading Setup, How It Works

Basically my favorite style of trading is joining on the trend of a slow fade. You barely have any headache and are not scared out of the trade. One of the biggest things to look out for in this "fading" setup is lower highs. Most of the time the stock will put in a base (support) at whole/half dollar marks. Here is an example of a stock today with a fantastic fading setup: http://ift.tt/1K5e1Fj

As you can see, the stock put in a lower high multiple times while holding support. If you want to play it safe wait for it to break first. If you are confident and want a better position, get short anticipating the break and fade. It is pretty common for stocks to fake a breakdown so playing it safe is almost always the better option.

However, things change when the stock is super low float (pretty much lower than 3 million float). Look at GENE, PTBI, and VLTC. They faked out so many times and kept squeezing. When the fading setup occurs on them, try to avoid trading it until it is past 3:00.

OTC example: http://ift.tt/1EBStZa

I have no idea what it is but OTC stocks are so much cleaner. As you can see, it held support then cracked. This crack normally doesn't always mean it will washout, sometimes it will fakeout and that is when you will have to cover. With this stock, it literally followed every trend possible for a huge 10%+ washout!

Stocks tend to really drop when:

  • It is breaking a whole/half dollar mark it normally holds

  • goes red on the day

  • it has been up a lot without much pullback (on the daily chart)

  • it breaks past 3:00

  • it isn't a crowded trade

  • a combination of these things usually makes the drop happen faster.

Good luck!

Stocks I'm watching today, 5/12/14

Hi everyone! Reddit was down last night when I tried to post so here is my post from last night:

Today was pretty good in terms of money but was really annoying in terms of how long it took! I basically churned a ton of commission for most of the day and couldn’t really get anything going…took like 4-5 flat trades and a bunch of crap for small gains. I finally did get a nice scalp on VGGL at $4.00 up to $4.20s, and toward the end of the day a nice short from my backup list on AAWW at $56.65 which I covered after the washout under $56. So those two trades were basically my whole day and everything else was just a waste of time and just paid the broker, lol. Oh well, green is green but kind of an annoying day in that sense. I noticed the volume on SPY was really low so it doesn’t surprise me VGGL was pretty much the only thing with any juice, and maybe PTBI which I didn’t have on my list and noticed later. Bottom line I guess I just overtraded a bit and that made for a frustrating day but at least I was able to milk a little gain out of the day. That said I see that chinese stocks were pretty nice today (JMEI, CCIH, CMCM, etc) so I’m gonna be watching some of those for continuations tomorrow! Here are my plans:

NYMX (long):

Had this today at $1.52 and ended up selling for peanuts at $1.55 after it refused to break $1.60. I didn’t want to swing it since the market is pretty close to highs and the last few times it’s gotten there it gapped down and got smoked within 1-2 days so I am learning from that and not swinging up here! Anyway, so I’ll be watching this first thing in the morning for that $1.60 break. If we can pull back to $1.54 it would be nice but it’s only a few pennies and if this breakout holds it can easily hit $2+ so I have no problem chasing a little bit if it just wants to go right away…I will just use slightly smaller size and add to the trade on dips after it holds.

CMCM (long):

I still really like this for a squeeze over $25.50 and it had a nice volume push today. The short interest is still nearly 70%. Tomorrow I’d like to see it hold the same trend it was in today on the 5 min chart…maybe a pullback to the $24.50 daily area and see it hold there. If it can do that or even just put in a nice support level in the morning I think this can really scream over $25.50. I’ll try to size in piece by piece since it’s kind of a risky/wild stock (especially in the morning) and be willing to give it some room and add a couple times if I’m wrong on the initial entry price.

CCIH (long):

Another Chinese stock that was very strong today and has a nice daily flag developing. I’ve been watching it for a while but it was sort of refusing to break out before. Often after they have one last shakeout you will get the real move which it seems like it might be starting now. My plan is to watch for a pullback to $14.40-14.50 where it broke out from the daily and see if it can hold there. I want to see it break under its intraday breakout of $14.60 today and then reclaim it. If it can do that I will get long for a red to green a $15 break.

CALM (long):

I really like the action on this today. A pullback to $47.50-48.00 would be good for me to go long for a red to green with stop under $47 and possibly add to winner once it develops. I won’t be too aggressive on these dip entries since the market is extended though. Goal would be for it to reclaim and overtake $50 and push to $51-52.

I like NYMX the bets out of my focus list, followed probably by CMCM. Here are some other ideas. I had a bunch of other stuff but I’m going to keep it to just these four so I don’t have too much crap on my list in the morning. We could also watch anything that has been on my backup list for the last few days and maybe add VGGL for a continuation and a couple others I found like NKTR long, ADXS short, AVD parabolic short and MCHX red to green. That’s it for tonight!

Hope everyone had an awesome day!

Chris

Position/swing traders: how often do you watch your deals?

It's my first time doing this, I know I should choose a stop loss point and forget about the stocks for a few days but the anticipation is killing me.

So, how often do you check them?

Also, how often do you look for upcoming trends and how? I generally sort stocks lists for highs-lows on a weekly basis. Then I check the graphs for interesting up trends.

I've been mulling around the idea of creating a blog aimed at showing young investors how to invest, what to invest in, and some basic investment strategies. Is it a good idea to invest in companies before the holidays?

My roommate and I are taking personal finance classes online and we started talking about possibly entering the market, and this is something that's come up.

In say October or November, would it be a good idea to invest in Apple or Playstation or obvious things that are expected to sell a buttload of during the Christmas season; even greeting card companies?

Similarly, from what I understand when a company is expecting to release something big like playstation and a new game, the anticipated sales are already factored into the cost of the stock. So would it be a good idea to invest now in, say playstation, then sell the stocks when the ps5 or some huge game comes out, in the distant future? Surely that can't be factored into anything yet

Hey guys and girls! I took Friday off and spontaneously ended up at Myrtle Beach to visit some friends who were in from NY lol so I didn't do a watchlist on Thursday but I'm back in biz now and made one for tomorrow! I did take a couple trades on Friday which are detailed here and also you can real my full plans on my blog: http://ift.tt/1J4kLlp

Basically just gonna be watching PNX for a bounce, IPCI for brakout and GMAN for possible short. Also really like ROSG for a break over $3.84 but Iw ill prob enter it sooner than that like $3.70-75 as it goes green. Everything else I've had on my list for a while so you should be familiar with it already :)

Let me know if ya have any questions!

Chris

How to transfer stocks from one online broker to another?

I currently have an account on ETrade but I wanted to switch to TradeKing. How would I do that?

THNS

Is anyone trading THNS tomorrow? After getting some newsletters this stock might be the next pump and dump penny stock.

Critique my portfolio

Ive wanted to step away from day trading for a bit (cuz i quite enjoy having a soul) so im holding a few broad etfs in the mean time.

33% TQQQ - nas100 ........ 33% CURE - US health ........... 11% DRN - RE .............. 11% TYD - 10yr trez ............ 11% TMF - 20yr trez ............ the other 1% is top secret.... all these r 3x levged etfs btw

After the hard hit bonds n RE last month, I did want to dump everything there but my vagina told me not to.

Anyways guys, any critiques of my holdings and allocations?

Best news source for US markets?

Looking to get more into trading, and I want a single comprehensive news source that I can casually check throughout the day. I know that using several sources would provide the most accurate information, but I'm not a full-time active trader, so I don't have time to consistently read more than one source. Since I'm going to be trading mostly US stocks, I need something that covers US markets well. So far I've been looking at either Bloomberg or MarketWatch. Anyone have any ideas?

Guaranteed way to beat the market

lets take QQQ for instance ( whose stocks i wont be working with - thats anlther story). i would hold nothing overnight. lets assume im working with 500k.

each AM i make an On the Open order to buy each of the 100 qqq stocks (500000/100). so, 5k per stock. i set the stop for eack stock at -.4% (a -.4 trail is better in my mind but i wont get into that). and theres absolutely no Limit (prof takr) set. run it til closing.

So each day i have no ceiling on gains and a quick stop for losers.

what are your thoughts? i know SOME stocks do a 180 turn around after reaching -.4%, but waaaay less often than -.3 and -.25.

I could also sell short when it hits -.40.

fees would be about $75 a day on 500k. high, but well worth being able to cap loser stocks. look at it this way, one stock losing 1 point is a 50$ loss.

where does the method fall short? and yes id change the stop depending on a stocks volatility

How will this affect the stocks? Not looking for an "will go up or down" typical answer. If you have a real opinion, I'd like to hear it. :) Also, just looking to learn peoples perspective on the market, since I'm still really new to all of this.
