Question about CFD's and market corrections

If one thought a market correction was coming but obviously could not tell exactly when ... could that person both buy and sell positions in the same market with guaranteed stop losses. All they would lose is the spread when it moves passes the stop loss, OTM one way. They would then hedge against the ITM position again until if/when a substantial drop happens. Please can someone tell me why this will not work? Thanks and sorry for the probably obvious question!

Gave a presentation in my Principals of Investments class about $CARA

My professor told me that $CARA was a bad stock to invest in which she said in front of my classmates. Her reason was since their beta is high and they have a negative PE ratio it wouldn't be smart to invest in. She also told me to read the Wall Street Journal, not sure why though. It really left me scratching my head and stunned that my professor would say that even though I explained the risk as well as the potential reward of making an investment in $CARA. Just wanted to share this experience with y'all.

Why do some stock symbols have a + sign?

For example, HBM (a mining company) is priced at about $7.00 and HBM+ (the same mining company) is priced at $0.60.

Also, the + ticker has very low volatility and takes a couple of seconds/minutes to send through an order.

I've seen this with a couple of other companies and they all follow similar rules (from what ive seen)

Lost half of my account, how to trade again?

I have been trading a losing streak for the last 6 months. I made some bad trades and lost some money and then kind of stopped trading but did a few trades each month but all of them are losers. I lost half of my account. I really want to get back into it again but my mind is kind of scattered after having so many bad trades.

I was looking back at my trades for the last year and I was doing a lot of small cap stock trades during my losing streak, I didn't really know when to enter and exit. My winners were mainly big companies like FB or GOOG, occasionally some mid cap ones but those seemed more like luck than strategy. I would win big on the small cap stocks but the losers really dragged my account down. I really have no strategy or sense of pattern anymore. I really want to get back into trading and learn more how to trade small cap stocks because those are where you can really grow your account.

Which is the best broking option for international residents looking to trade in the US markets? (In terms of fees and minimum balance required)

Just wondering if there are any available avenues where the fees are under $10 per trade, and no (or very low) requirement for a minimum account balance? These are the two most important things to me. Currently I see minimum balance requirements of $2,500++ and that's just too high for me.

All I want to do for now is to get one trade done as a "learning experience", so that when the market really goes down I actually know how the process works.

In my home country there is no requirement for a minimum balance, and I use a cash-upfront account and don't intend to trade on margins for now.

TQ!

Learning the basics of stock trading for a high schooler

I didn't really know where to go or how to start learning about the stock market so I thought I would ask you lovely people. I am a 16 guy trying to learn about the basics of the stock market, where to trade, how to trade and pretty much anything else I should know. Even though I probably can't trade right know I really want to learn everything I can so that I know how to properly invest my money into the stock market once I get some. If you guys know any articles or YouTube videos that go in depth into the stock market that would help me that would be amazing. Thanks a bunch to anyone who responds.

Questions on stock market and investing

So I know there online brokers such as Fidelity and ETRADE, but:

1.) which one of these brokers is the most reliable, or what makes one better than the other?

2.) How much money are the transactions through online brokers. Can't it be very risky if you trade 100k online? or do people so smaller amounts like 1k? How can you trust that these brokers won't take your money?

3.) Let's say 1 share of Tesla is $250 right now and I want to buy one share. If I go to an online broker, can I instantly buy one, or do I have to wait until a shareholder sells one?

4.) Just like #3-If I want to sell a share, do I have to wait until somebody is willing to buy it or if i sell it, does the money go straight to the company?

[Weekly Charting] I'll analyze the top 10 stock tickers posted in the comments and make a video with my analysis

I'm a swing/day trader and will do some short term chart/fundamental analysis on the top 10 tickers posted here. I might throw in some thoughts longer term but mostly you should assume a shorter term trade (days to weeks).

If you want a chart analyzed respond with the following (REQUIRED):

  1. Ticker
  2. Long or short (i.e. do you think it will go up or down)

Rules (READ THESE AND FOLLOW THEM):

  1. ONE idea per post (otherwise we don't know which is being upvoted) Feel free to make multiple posts though...try to keep it to 2 or 3 if possible so we get a good variety

  2. No OTC or foreign companies.

  3. No options, futures, forex, etc. Equities only.

  4. If you don't post both a ticker AND a direction (long/short) I can't analyze it

  5. If you see one you want analyzed already posted, upvote it.

  6. If you miss the thread but still want a ticker analyzed, look for the YouTube link and post your idea in the YouTube comments. I'll respond there via text!

I'll do the top 10 most upvoted or the 10 most common that follow all the rules. If there are ties I'll do them based on who posted the earliest.

I'll edit the post and post the video at the top in bold after I let the thread run for a while and collect tickers!

Have fun!

Do indices only track capital growth or do they also track dividends?

Do stock indices like the DJIA or S&P 500 or Russell 2000 only track capital growth, or do they also factor in dividends in their calculations?

PS: I'm talking about the indices themselves, not index funds and the like.

Brazil to Purchase Large Quantities of Gaucher Treatment from Protalix

DECEMBER 15, 2016

BY CAROLINA HENRIQUES

Protalix BioTherapeutics has announced that Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), an arm of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, has issued a letter of  intent to purchase significant quantities of Uplyso (alfataliglicerase) to treat people with Gaucher disease in Brazil.

Known as Elelyso (taliglucerase alfa) outside of Latin America, the treatment was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for adults with Type 1 Gaucher disease in 2012, and was approved for pediatric use in 2014. Since then, many other countries have also approved of its use as a Gaucher disease treatment.

Alfataliglicerase is the first plant cell-based enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for  Gaucher disease. It is also the first approved plant cell-expressed drug that derives from ProCellEx, Protalix’s cell-based protein manufacturing system using genetically modified carrot cells.

Gaucher disease is a rare lysosomal storage disorder, and alfataliglicerase is a form of the human lysosomal enzyme, glucocerebrosidase.

The Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency, known as ANVISA, granted regulatory approval for Uplyso to treat adults with Gaucher disease in March 2013, and extended that approval to children last month.

The letter requests three shipments of Uplyso: the first of which is to be delivered by mid-2017, and the last to be delivered by year’s end. The company expects to claim about $24 million in revenue in the sale.

“To date, we have sold relatively small quantities of alfataliglicerase to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, which has allowed physicians and patients in Brazil to experience firsthand the drug’s beneficial efficacy and safety profile,” Moshe Manor, president and chief executive officer of Protalix, said in a press release. “The Brazilian Ministry’s request to purchase considerably larger quantities comes on the heels of advanced negotiations …  regarding the potential of alfataliglicerase becoming the preferred enzyme replacement therapy for the approximately 700 Gaucher patients treated in Brazil.”

Common adverse reactions for this medication include itching, headaches, nausea, and joint pain.

Protalix has licensed global development and commercialization rights for alfataliglicerase to Pfizer, except for Brazil, where Protalix retains full rights. Brazil has the third largest number of Gaucher patients identified worldwide, after the U.S. and Israel.

If Tesla becomes worlds largest car manufacturer and 5x solar panel + energy business. What would it mean to Tesla stock?

New to stock market and I'm trying to get a rough understanding of how what would happen to Tesla stock if they become worlds largest car manufacturer and 5x solar panel + energy business? (with good reputation, healthy margins, profitability and so on).

If TSLA is trading at 252 today, what would an extremely rough ballpark prediction be? Woud it mean a 20% increase? 50%? 100%? 500%? 1000%? 10 000%?

Any reasoning process or how to think about this sort of thing would be super helpful. Or any previous event to compare to? Please let me know if I can improve my question in any way (first time I post on r/stockmarket).

How do I claim my deceased grandmothers stock/shares while avoiding probate/lawyers?

Let me explain the situation

My grandmother passed away this past July. She was on home hospice and we we're working on getting this situated with the social worker; planning on doing the Transfer-On-Death form(s). We couldn't get it done before it was too late. I registered a computershare account with all her details a week or two before she passed. I've printed out a transfer request form and filled it out as much as I am able to. I haven't sent it yet.

In progress:

When I send the transfer request form I'm going to include: A Medallion Guarantee Stamp(If even possible, haven't gotten this yet, have to go to the bank; What do I need?), Death Certificate(not a copy), 2 copies of identification(Mine and my mothers), An Affidavit of Domicile form(Filled out with RocketLawyer; Do I need this notarized? What do I need to get this notarized? Is this document official without a court process?), A confirmation of approximant value of stocks; about 4,500$ AT&T (Screencapped an account overview on computershare), A change of address notice i got through the mail when first initially registered her on computershare), and the most recent dividend check that came through the mail.

In addition to the above, I have to include:

About two or three weeks ago I reported the stock certificates lost on the computershare website, and this put a "stop transfer restrictiction" against the lost securities. "As required by law, we have filed a Securities Information Center Report with the financial community" They sent us a "Affidavit and Application" form to fill out which requires a notarized "Small Estate Affidavit" document which I'm pretty sure has to go through court. Why did I report the certificates lost? Because I thought this was the way to go. I'm pretty sure I could dig through some of her stuff and find some old paperback certificates from 1988 to present.

My Sister had a joint bank account with my grandmother that was closed a week after she passed away because of overdraft charges. This transfer would be going into my mothers name.

My grandma owned 3 houses, filed bankruptcy and lost 2 houses. She stopped paying her house payment 4 years ago because who would pay 50,000$ for a 10,000$ house. Foreclosure process began and she was kicked out last march. Died in July. House went through Sheriffs auction in November and it sold for 5,000$ + closing costs and such.

If a probate/lawyer is absolutely the only way to obtain these stocks, would my mother be on the hook for the house debt? If a probate/lawyer is needed would the court/lawyer costs even be worth all this trouble for 4,500$? I'm attempting to buy my first car.

Looking to meet London based traders to get feedback on new "pre-breaking" news platform

Hi all

I am the founder of Glasgow University based spin-out Scoop Analytics (http://ift.tt/2e5I2Yk). Our algorithms monitor thousands of tweets per second in order to identify the news (many minutes) before it becomes mainstream. The algorithms were built upon many years of research during our PhD's and in the last few weeks, we have finished development of our web dashboard.

Unfortunately, we are techies and not traders however - so although we know we can "get the news before everyone else", we are struggling to understand what news is relevant for stock / forex trading purposes.

Therefore, I'm looking to meet any interested traders in London for a coffee / beer to ask a few questions about:

  • what / how you currently trade
  • how you see our algorithm helping you make more profitable trades.

As a "thank you", anyone who is available to meet will get a 6-months free trial or more depending on your level of input.

This 1 minute video will give you a good idea of what we do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFIgJKPmVNo

Cheers! Phil

Best website to get past earnings information?

Does anyone know of a website where I could find the past earnings information of companies? I know there are hundreds of sites like this but the ones I’ve seen aren’t that great. All the ones I’ve come across have basically had the EPS that the company has reported on an earnings date and the % surprise…and that’s it. Does anyone know of a site that has a company’s expected revenue vs. actual revenue, expected income vs. actual income, and the company’s market performance the day of/after its earnings release (depending on if earnings were reported before market open or after market close) as well as expected EPS vs. actual EPS? I know all this stuff can be found fairly easily but I’m looking for just one site where all this information is just laid out in a neat and straightforward list. Also, and this is a big one, EVERY site I’ve found has only had earnings history going back 4 quarters (or 4 four fiscal years). I’d preferably like to see back by at least 10 quarters. Is there any site out there that meets all these requirements? Thanks a lot.

Hello all, my name is Alex. Myself and a few students from New York and one from California thought about breaking down what we're learning in finance class so people that went through different university programs or don't have a formal education can learn about the stock market.

We're always looking for feedback on what could be better.

Thank you for your time!

I'm sure this question is older than dirt, but what do you all find to be the most effective website for monitoring day-to-day stock movements? I am really a fan of "prettier" layouts, so please do suggest something that is graphically appealing.

Tidbit: Yes, trade view is great, but they are really invasive at times when it comes to purchasing a premium account.

Hi fellas!

So, I just wanted to quickly post this question up in here for all of you participants of the weekly stock picking challenges here at r/StockMarket!

I wanted to simply confirm with everyone here, but are well all fine with us removing the rationale requirement for the weekly challenge starting from next week? Or, should we keep things status quo and not remove the rationale requirement?

I went ahead and setup a poll for you all to vote on! I felt this was the best way for me to settle this issue once and for all! :P

CLICK HERE TO PLACE YOUR VOTE NOW!

And, if possible please also post your vote on this thread so we all know what you are voting for. Unfortunately, there is no way to see who is voting for what poll option on this poll so if you're participating in the voting please reveal yourself here on the thread as well!

Hope to be seeing some good feedback from all of you guys in here as we move forward in the future with these weekly challenges here at r/StockMarket!

Suggestions: How Do I Long Gold?

Hi everyone. Long time creeper, first time poster.

I've accumulated some extra funds outside of my portfolio.I wanted to get suggestions on how I would go about going long Gold in the stock market.

I'm not talking about leveraged ETF's. I want to hold for 5+ years. Something a little less volatile.

Thank you!

Who or what determines the dow divisor value?

For example if one of the 30 companies stock splits, the divisor will be adjusted to make the split seamless. Who or what is determining what the new value will be? Is there a formula they use? or do they/it/he/she/ just fiddle the number so that the product is the same with respect to the previous value before a stock split?

Question about stock price x number of shares issued

If a company's worth is its stock price times the number of shares issued, why not just issue enough shares with a lower price so that more people can buy?

Like, why have Google's share price set at $1000 a share with 1,000,000 shares issued instead of at $1 a share with 1,000,000,000 shares issued?

If there's a better place for one to ask such questions, please let me know. Just trying to learn about the economic system under which I live, which wasn't taught much in school (ironic since school is supposed to prepare one for the "working world," right? But I digress...)

Thanks ahead of time!

SGYP , what happened here?

$SGYP recently had a drug approved by the FDA prior to their PDUFA date, it is clearly superior to existing drugs, and they own all of it. Then the stock tanked 10%.

What happened here? Some theories - manipulation around Jan 20 options expiry, severe diarrhea side effect (it's a goddamn laxitive drug and has much less diarrhea effect than it's competitor!) which Adam Feurstein tweeted about. Company is packaged for sale, not sales.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here. Is there any valid reason for the stock going down?

Automatic Trading?

I'm a complete noob, so if there's a more appropriate subreddit, please point me in the right direction.

I'm a software developer, and someone approached me about building a software suite that monitors real time pricing data for a specific trend. When this trend is noticed, the software would automatically buy/sell.

Questions:

  1. Is automatic trading like that a thing? Is it allowed on all exchanges?

  2. From my first pass research effort, it looks like something similar to TradeStation might already accomplish want he wants. Anyone used TradeStation? (http://ift.tt/2jOl0ew)

  3. Lastly, it seems the smallest barrier of entry API for getting real time data is Intrino - Fintech. Can anyone comment on their API?

Thanks guys!

[DISCUSSION REQUEST] How can we improve the weekly charting videos?

Hey yall!

Chris here. If you don't know me I make the weekly charting/technical analysis videos for /r/stockmarket that you will find in threads like this once a week. Here are some examples of the videos from my YouTube channel. First I wanted to say thanks for all the support and for all those who have subbed to my channel and commented on my videos, followed me on twitter, etc. I've definitely seen an increase in the number of comments and user interaction on the videos themselves lately so that's awesome.

Second, /u/bigbear0083 and I are trying to come up with ways we can improve the content or get more eyes on it. I'd love to make this the video everyone comes to /r/stockmarket for each week and something that can help everyone get the trading results they want, or learn whatever they want to learn so I'm asking for your help in building something that everyone will find useful.

What would you all like to see? Do you like the current format or is there something else that would be better for the same content, or maybe we could change the content up also to a sort of Q&A format or something like that? I'm open to ideas, I just wanted to get a discussion going and see what the community wants. We've had mixed results with these threads as some of them get tons of upvotes and lots of responses and others kinda disappear so we're trying to pin down what the differences are and make sure that there's a reason to check them out, subscribe to the channel, and keep coming back to /r/stockmarket for more!

So, open discussion - tell me what yall want to know and what would be good to do as a weekly video series and let's make it happen! Or if you like the current stuff and just want to see minor things changed or think there are other ways we could get more interaction from the community on it, let us know and we'll do it! I'm open to whatever as it doesn't take me too long to do these each week so it's no big deal to change it up and do something a little different.

Thanks everyone!

Chris

Have fun!
