Is it a good idea to avoid using leverage?

Obviously, if you have leverage, you can make more money. But, if you lose, you are now in debt to the broker, and could potentially find yourself with a bill that you have no way of paying.

I'm just getting into trading, and my instinct is to not use leverage. It seems like it would be wise to avoid borrowing money. Do others agree? Or, do you think I'm being overly cautious?

Are there any guides on predicting the behavior of the computers engaging in algorithmic trading? Is it possible to trade in such a way that you're working with the computers?

My understanding is that about 60% of activity in the market is high frequency algorithmic trading. If this is the case, it seems like it would be a good strategy to predict the behavior of the algorithms and trade accordingly. Is this possible? Is there anyone doing this successfully?

$BZUN or $TEAM or both?

With their current dips, both Boazun ($BZUN) and Atlassian ($TEAM) look like a buy. Which would you choose and why?

Atlassian hasn't done much in the past 5 months. Meanwhile, Boazun has been quite volatile since ER; down to around $26, up around $40, down to $33.

I don't see Atlassian heading past $40 unless ER is a major beat. It would be nice if they were an acquisition target but companies like $MSFT and $AMZN seem set on building their own comparable products. If they were to get acquired, this stock with be north of $40 IMO.

Many analysts and investors are banking on the Boazun share price to follow the same path as $SHOP and $BABA. While this is possible, I'm not so sure it's going to take the rapid rise that those stocks have taken this year. ER being a beat doesn't mean this stock will pop either.

What are your thoughts?

Completely new to the stock market and require help for a school competition

My school has entered into a state wide stock simulation competition and though our teacher has explained things to us I don't have her with me 24/7 to ask questions so I was wondering if Reddit could help me. I just want to know if there's a good way to know how to find good stocks to invest in and if I were to find a stock myself how to check if it's a good one to invest in. I also would like to know if anyone has any ideas of which stock would be a good investment. Some quick context but this competition is over the span of 10 weeks, we have $100,000 and $200,000 in buying power.

Beginner in the stock market

Hello, I’ve been in the Crypto space for about 5-6 months now and have seen some awesome gains. However, Crypto is very speculative and high risk, so I would like to get into the stock market to cut down some risk. I set up a TD Ameritrade account and just put in $1000. Was thinking of buying TMUS first and foremost because of their possible upcoming merger with Sprint. Any other advice on what I should do? Looking for nice steady growth mainly, not high risk high reward investments.

need help with yum china stock

hello, thank you for any and all help.

untill i look at the paper, i dont know exactly howmany stocks i have, but basically YUM is selling YUM china. i need to move stocks to another YUM company.

I have 3 options:

sell them, take the hit with fees and taxes, pocket the rest

tranfer them to another YUM stock and take the hit for it being lower than others.

or, let them transfer it and as they say "transfers will be based of proceeds from the sale of yum china stock".

i have stocks in both YUM china and just YUM.

they sent everyone a letter saying we need to do this soon.

thank u for any and all advice

What are people's plays with MU?

I bought it yesterday and not gonna lie with that dip I was pretty nervous. But looks like I'll be able to pocket a good bit out of it though I'm not getting rich off of it soon and that's A OK for me

I bought it at 35$ and its about 36$ (yea I should have waited further in that dip and gotten it at 34) and its on the border of 36. A fundemental anaysis will tell you that it's not bad to hold but the technicals are..... pretty bad.

I'm planning to decide whether I sell or not at the end of the day depending on volume. If there's high volume and the price is upward or stable then as we know volume shifts precede priceshifts so ill hold but if there is low volume and the price is stable i'll probably dip since that means a bunch of people will probably wanna get out as soon as the market closes

Any thoughts and what are you're plays going to be?

Japanese Trading Techniques/Technical Analysis

I have a base layer of knowledge about Japanese trading techniques/technical analysis (i.e. ICs, candlesticks, Heikin Ashi).

However, I am looking for some more advanced/in-depth resources for these types of techniques, and/or any other Japanese techniques.

Thanks in advance!

Does PDT apply to non-US citizens?

I've recently started day-trading US-stocks (mostly in Nasdaq stocks) and living in the Netherlands. I use a dutch based broker as well (De Giro).

Basically i'm wondering if the PDT rule applies to me in this situation? Can't find proper information about it anywhere, so any help is appreciated :)

Nice gains for $RHT but do you think it will hit 120 target?

Senior in High School Looking for Short Term Advice

Hope it's a good Monday for everyone. I am a senior in high school who is new to trading (have only been swing trading for six months), and want advice from all of you with more experience. I know it might be ridiculous, but for reasons undisclosed I am dreaming of getting a 20% gain before the end of 2017, starting tomorrow.

It is a relatively small pot of money, and can afford to be lost. What are my best chances for achieving this moonshot without losing it all?

I started out trading cryptocurrency, where movements like this are commonplace. Knowing that crypto isn't necessarily a sustainable endeavor, I am attempting to adapt what I have learned and have begun the undertaking of learning to trade real exchanges.

Any advice is appreciated, I'm interested in leveraged ETF's, quick movers like GBTC, or any asset that stands a chance to meet this goal.

Thank you

Keep or dump

So I'm fairly new at investing in general. I'm 21 years old and only ever did Paper Trading in high school. I looked into $AMD when there was talk about hooking up with Tesla and invested some extra cash I had laying around. My question is, should I hang onto the Amd shares? Or take the loss and learn from my mistake. I bought the shares at around $14. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thoughts on the Icelandic stock market?

Currently I'm very intrigued by it. Iceland has an exceedingly well-managed, strong economy, and despite its small population, most of the population is involved heavily in the economy in some form or another (tl;dr: unlike other countries, money from citizens is constantly going back to the gov't and business due to high taxation, and high wages leaving Icelanders with higher disposable incomes than many other people from other nations).

This year hasn't been too good for Iceland, mostly because their 2nd Prime Minister in a row will be elected in one year, and the fact that many people from the country were revealed to be on the Panama Papers, etc. A few other things too. However, I feel as though right now the entire market is a total BUY.

At this very moment, there are only 8 listings in the Icelandic Stock Exchange, and two stand out to me in particular: ICE: HAGA (a company which runs Iceland's two largest grocery stores), and ICE: ICEAIR (Iceland's largest airline).

What I love the most about these two companies is that #1: they're very established companies, #2: they all have great movement, and they're all essentially the equivalent to penny stocks due to the Icelandic Krona's lesser value (and to reiterate, penny stocks, but without the extreme risk, pump and dumps and unpredictable volatility like in the US. The other great thing about the Icelandic markets is the fact that the majority of their shareholders are big banks, firms and general financial firms.

Does anyone here have any experience in any Icelandic public listings? Are you Icelandic, and do you have any thoughts on your country's economy+stock market?

Thoughts on Apple, Stock Market Crash , And we humans, being replaced by Robots.

APPL:

Sure there have been a lot of criticisms and actual problems about the new iPhones, and stock went down $8 a share since the party.

I too have been having so many issues with my iphone6 - Siri, battery, freezing, map, screen, and the non-aesthetically appealing design, small screen, etc. , etc.

But what's better out there now that I want a replacement? No matter how much I don't like my iPhone, it is still way better than others on the market.

As my 12 year old puts it, we also pay Apple to fix our iPhones.

And what's more? All of my two daughter's friends who are allowed to have a phone, have an iPhone.

So, this is why I keep my Appl, while keep my ears and eyes open for a revolutionary product that surpasses iPhones.

Do you know one with potential?

Market crash:

It is in many articles and news I receive each day. - be warned of signs of recession, market is going to crash , any minute any day now.

So I look around, all my friends are employed, salaries have been increasing, we have more projects then we can handle.

Then I look beyond my friend circle. What an amazing and exciting time we are in. So many technologies are being developed. While many are being applied to real life, many are only in infancy and we are just beginning.

Then I put the two together - my immediate world and the world beyond. There are just too many things need to improve in my field of work and I have a long wish list of things that can make life better. Sure enough, there is a world out there developing solutions. It is only getting better ( except Microsoft outlook which goes backwards !)

We all have our positions and purposes and we know where we are going/what we are doing. So why would there be a recession induced market crash?

What's your opinion?

Now Robots.

What makes you happy? Would you rather do repetitive tasks each day to earn a pay check or do what you truly want to do?

IMHO, robots will make our lives so much better. They won't replace us. They will do the work for us (and better than us). And we humans? We write rules.

I look forward to the day most of my tasks can be Automated, then I will be freed to experiment all those thoughts been in my head.

I anxiously await. What about you?

Cheers,

BM.

Expected Value for the S&P500 Index into 2018

Back on August 28th we posted Is the S&P500 Index Fairly Priced? based upon 5 basic long-term market trends (1932 to 2017). Then on September 15th we posted Follow-up: Is the S&P500 Index Fairly Priced? based upon 5 basic post-recession market trends (2010 to 2017). In those posts we limited our analysis to only the latest reported earnings (03/31/2017) and dividends (06/30/2017) for evaluating current market valuations. In this post we are broadening the analysis to include 3 to 4 sources for earnings data and 2 sources for dividend data along with year-ahead projections for the S&P 500 Index. Specifically, we will compare expected market valuations based upon both short-term & long-term trends for the following:

 Log (S&P 500 Index Price) vs. Time - Chart 1 in both posts

 S&P 500 Index Price vs. Earnings - Chart 2 in both posts

 S&P 500 Index Price vs. Dividends - Chart 3 in both posts

 Log (S&P 500 Index Price) vs. Log (Earnings) - Chart 4 in both posts

 Log (S&P 500 Index Price) vs. Log (Dividends) - Chart 5 in both posts

First, let's summarize the 5 short-term formulas with their respective coefficients of determination:

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 367.3 x (1.115497)YR-2000 , R2 = 0.9468 (Chart 1)

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 27.053 x (Earnings) - 704.96, R2=0.5356 (Chart 2)

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 46.464 x (Dividends) + 106.14, R2 = 0.9589 (Chart 3)

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 3.4757 x (Dividends)1.376 , R2=0.5633 (Chart 4)

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 63.973 x (Dividends)0.928 , R2 = 0.9591 (Chart 5)

Second, let's summarize the 5 long-term formulas with their respective coefficients of determination:

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 0.7239 x (1.071115)YR-1900 , R2 = 0.9726 (Chart 1)

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 20.078 x (Earnings) - 6.12, R2 = 0.9080 (Chart 2)

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 52.279 x (Dividends) - 56.99, R2 = 0.9316 (Chart 3)

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 12.601 x (Earnings)1.0958 , R2 = 0.9451 (Chart 4)

(Expected Value)S&P500 = 20.46 x (Dividends)1.2596 , R2 = 0.9698 (Chart 5)

Third, let's summarize the input data for the 4 different periods starting with the last earnings report period:

03/31/17: EPS=105.17, DIV=46.57, YR=2017.25

09/30/17: EPS=123.81, DIV=49.75, YR=2017.75

03/31/18: EPS=133.54, DIV=50.59, YR=2018.25

09/30/18: EPS=137.99, DIV=51.42, YR=2018.75

Fourth, let's compute the expected values for the S&P500 Index for each period using the 10 formulas and weight the results by the respective coefficients of determination for each formula:

03/31/17: Expected Value = 2274.60

09/30/17: Expected Value = 2521.79

TSLA working with AMD to make an AI chip

Article source: http://ift.tt/2xjFtgh

Tesla is working on custom silicon for its self-driving software in partnership with AMD, CNBC reported Wednesday. "The carmaker has received back samples of the first implementation of its processor and is now running tests on it," a source told CNBC. Shares of AMD soared more than six percent on Wednesday after news of the partnership leaked.

Can you remember AMD was below $2 not that long ago?

Ive been impressed with the massive turnaround over the past year, the latest GPUs and that threadripper have me yearning to build a new gaming rig soon.

Yes I know... to many cores for gaming, but I also render video a lot too, so playing PUBG while rendering video would be just right! :D
