Stock Broker choice for small($2-3k) account?

I'm getting back into stock market after couple years of hiatus, and as I have a mortgage now, I don't have $10k to jump straight to IB, which is hands down the best broker IMO. But I have about $2-3k that I'm ok with losing, so I'm looking for broker suggestions.

I'll be doing 100% swing trading with holding period of < 1 month, and I'd like to keep market neutral, so a margin account is required for me to short stuff and not having to wait 3 days for settlement. I understand that normal per-trade commission of $7-$10 one-way will eat up a LOT of my profit, so the lower the commission the better.

Any suggestion is appreciated.
