Hi,
I'm trying to understand how to manually calculate the Book Value (BV) per share of companies based on their annual filings, but want to make sure I'm calculating things correctly when there are many classes.
Posted a few examples below, if you wouldn't mind providing the answers - thanks!
Sample of calculating BV per share when there is only one class: Total Assets $2,000,000 Total Liabilities $1,000,000 Shareholder's Equity $1,000,000 Common shares outstanding 100,000 BV per share = $10
Sample of calculating BV per share when there are two classes: Total Assets $2,000,000 Total Liabilities $1,000,000 Shareholder's Equity $1,000,000 Common shares outstanding class A: 250,000 Common shares outstanding class B: 450,000
Is BV per share $1.43? (ie just add the total outstanding shares?) OR is there a BV for each class? BV for class A: ??? BV for class B: ???
Few real life examples based on the latest 10-k annual reports:
1. Brown-Forman Corp
Shareholder's Equity: 1,370,000,000 Class A (BF.A): 169,027,456 Class B (BF.B): 215,178,607 What is the BV per share of BF.A and BF.B?
2: Berkshire Hathaway
Shareholder's Equity: 283,001,000,000 Class A (BRK.A): 774,680 Class B (BRK.B): 1,304,592,522 What is the BV per share of BRK.A and BRK.B?
3 Under Armour
Shareholder's Equity: 2,030,900,000 Class A (UAA): 183,837,686 Class B (not public): 34,450,000 Class C (UA): 220,242,776 What is the BV per share of UAA and UA?
