If my portfolio is diverse enough, can I just hold everything for long-term and expect it to go up steadily?

I am a beginner in trading/investing and I don't have much time to do research on stocks and companies.

Is it stupid to just buy a bunch of stocks and keep them all for the long-term without ever selling and doing research?
