How do you personally go about picking a stock to short?

Just a little background to give you some context about my question. I'm not a trader but am in a class where we are simulating managing an active portfolio. Part of the assignment requires us to take a certain amount of short positions. I'm just kind of having trouble analyzing firms in the sense that maybe I'm just too optimistic and can't see any sort of indicators that would lead me to believe that a certain stock price will fall in the near future.

Now that being said, I'm not asking anyone to do my assignment for me and throw some stocks at me that you think would be good to short. I genuinely want to know what are some sort of red flags that would cause you to short a stock instead of taking a long position. If you wan't to use some past examples or future examples that's awesome as long as there's some logic and reasoning behind it.

Really appreciate any sort of guidance and advice you all could give me. Been a long time lurker and have always learned a lot on this sub. Gracias!
