How is betterment better than just investing in indices that they themselves invest in?

Someone was trying to sell me me betterment the other day, then I started looking into it and they have fees of 0.25% per year. I thought it was higher than what individual funds (VOO) would charge me. All they do is invest in big and popular indices. Am I missing something?
