Looking for the name of a correlation that creates an stock/market change causation.

I know that it's voyeuristic to confuse correlation with causation. But if I were to find a variable that consistently affects stocks in a positive or negative manner, would there be a name for this type of indicator? I've heard it before and simply can't remember what it is called.
