Stop Loss/Stop Limit

What's your strategy on these two?

I recently bought NVDA for $242 and saw it going up to $253. I'm new to the stock market and thought it would be a good idea to set a stop limit on $245 to lock in at least some profits in case of major correction (I learned my mistake in February when my portfolio value decreased sharply within 1-2 days). It was good until today, $7 drop within 10 minutes this morning caused my stop limit order to execute. Stock price reached $243 and then started to raise again, now sitting at $249.

Obviously I took some profit but it was at least twice as low as if there was no such swing this morning.

Couple things:

  1. Was it not a market manipulation of some sort?
  2. What exactly caused this type of drop immediately after marked opened?
  3. What would be good strategy for someone new to avoid losses?
