Any advice for a new guy?

I'm finally at a stage in life where I can invest comfortably and I'm looking to get a good start of course. I know the obvious premise of it and how it all works, but does anybody recommend any specific companies that they have a lot of faith in at the moment? Or any other general advice that people usually miss when they start?
