Is there a limit to the number of companies you should own?

The majority of my money in the market is in index funds - 60% or so, trying to make it 80%. The remainder is put into companies of my choosing. For this 20%, I'm using robinhood, and there are no commisison fees, so I wonder, is there any particular "max" number of companies? Conceivably I could put my money into several dozen companies instead of more heavily into a small number. Is there any downside to this (besides the fact that the stocks obviously won't all be winners)?
