Beginner need a good charting site?

I am completely new to the stock market up to this point I have been reading books and listening to a few stock classes taught available on CD.

I don't trade real money at the moment I am using a stock simulator and trading virtual currency and plan to this for a year.

My question is: Are there any good free charting sites? A few people recommend Qcharts to me but it is $160 a month and I'm not willing to pay that much until I trade with real money

Basic Question - How does the buy/sell order queue work?

I'm not sure I got it right and want some explanation from you guys here with regards to the buy/sell queue mechanic of the stock market.

Let's say Share A closes at $2.38 on the previous trading day, and opens at the same price, i.e. $2.38 on the morning of the new trading day.

However, let's say that in between the two time periods, you placed an order at $2.40/share. Now, when it comes to your turn at the queue, the selling price of the share is still $2.38...but your buying price is $2.40. So which will it be? Will the transaction be priced at $2.38 or $2.40?

Likewise, let's look at the alternative scenario. What if you placed an order at $2.38 but by the time it came to your place in the queue the stock price is at $2.40. What happens in such a scenario? Will your order get cancelled? Or will it remain in queue for the day/good till date at that specific $2.38 price till you get it (of course, if the stock never reaches $2.38 ever again, I assume you never get to buy it at the price).

Thanks. Would hope for some basic clarification here!

Edit: What about the selling price being at $2.38, but somebody sells his small lot of stocks at $2.35. Who will that be matched to? To the person with the highest buying price at that point in time, or to the person with a buying price of $2.35?

$ETRM Insurance Coverage?? Help with research

Thanks in advance. I do not know how to review medical codes. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I need help. For someone verify if this information is legit because I have not seen any PR. Someone posted this on stocktwits and I am not sure if it is bullsh1t and just someone trolling around.

He provided a screen shot of United Health care website showing effective January 1, 2017 they will have coverage for vbloc.

He said CPT code 0312t to 0317t is Vagus Nerve Stimulation specific for obesity (vbloc). I have posted both of the screen shots he provided. He claims the previous one dated 12/14/16 said it is not covered and that the new one said it is covered but pre-authorization required.

Can you tell if they are real or fake? I want to be ready and don't want to rush a market buy on pre-market. Thank you.

Happy New Year 2017 r/StockMarket and thank you all for a great 2016!

So I just wanted to quickly to take this time out to post this thread up in here while I have an opportunity right now before we ring in the new year to give y'all regulars who have been such an important part of the making of this subreddit over the years a HUGE (or as Trump would say -- "YOUUUGE" :D) shout out & thank you! It has been yet another wild & crazy year in the markets!

I hope all of you (as well your families & friends) have an absolutely fantastic New Year!

I can't believe how quickly this 2016 has gone by.

Anyway, here's to a prosperous year to all of us in 2017! I'll have to admit I am really looking forward to the new year.

Cheers to everyone, and we'll be catching up with you guys in the brand spanking new year!

EDIT: BTW, while I'm at it here wishing everyone a happy new year, I figured this could be a good time to gather some feedback from all of you redditors who frequent r/StockMarket ... but is there anything here that you guys would like to see more of at this sub as we ring in the new year 2017?

Does anyone really care for the weekly stock picking challenges? I know I was personally running that here at this sub for a couple of months, and it was active. But, would you guys like to see that continued in 2017 or not so much? I had a few requests from people during the time I was actively running those asking if I could run a monthly contest as well. Truthfully that would be a bit too overwhelming for me to do. It would really have to be either one or the other. Can't do both.

What else here? Besides the usual weekly earnings threads, and morning pre-market movers, is there anything else here that you guys would like to see on r/StockMarket?

Please let us know! All feedback is very much welcomed, and even feedback on what you guys would like to see less of is welcomed here as well.

Hope to hear from you guys soon, and thank you all once again for making 2016 one of r/StockMarket's busiest years ever! It wouldn't have been possible w/o everyone's great contributions throughout the year! Thank you all! :)

Happy New Year everyone and we'll be catching up with you guys in 2017! Cheers!

What do you think of this stock i stumbled upon a year ago?

VGM.c on the Canadian securities exchange. It will be moving to the TSXV on January 3rd.

http://ift.tt/2fYXUBZ

Milk from vegetables. "Veggemo". It's in all major Canadian grocery stores right now and they have inked deals into China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

If milk from almonds and coconuts is worth 12 billion , what do you think milk from vegetables is going to be worth?

Right now you need to be a Canadian citizen to buy shares but on January 3rd they are moving to the tsxv, and anyone will be able to buy shares .

With the world shifting ever so slowly towards veganism , I think this will be a smart investment in the years to come.

Also, it's kind of known that it takes over a gallon of water to grow a single almond, and California is drying up, so I'm thinking this may actually drastically help with the global warming issue , as it's also known that the dairy industry is responsible for global warming .

Was involved in Bitcoin at 2 cents . And think this is the next big thing.

I've quietly bought up 500,000 shares between 7-10 cents over the last year . Maybe I am crazy haha

Wouldn't an hour of trading a day be enough if the EMH were true?

If the efficient market hypothesis were true, wouldn't prices be able to adjust to all available information in a very short amount of time? As such, is there any benefit of the market being open any more than an hour a day?

I'm long Nvidia (NVDA) for 2017

I didn't buy at the beginning of 2016, but I'm currently up 90%~ on NVDA. Despite the report from CNA Finance, which has some good points, I still think that NVDA will out perform next year.

I'm not sure if I'm going to buy on the dip yet, because it might fall further in the short term. But I'm going to stay long, and I think that by December 2017 the stock will be much higher than it is today.

I have an inquiry about event/character based trading.

I apologize for my ignorance, I know almost nothing about trading.

I am looking to learn the basics because I am writing a novel and I have a major character that is a trader.

For the purposes of plot, this trader doesn't make trades based on numbers or raw data but instead based on his knowledge of social events and character analytics.

A scenario I am working on for example is that he waits for times when decisions have to be made (example a company needs to decide if it will buy out another company). He will make the trade based on rumors he hears, based on analyzing the character of the executives (through spying on them) to determine what decisions he believes they will make, etc.

I want to base my story off of real life events, so I am wondering where I find this kind of information.

Every time I search online I always either get redirected to trading sites offering me promotions/courses or blogs with information that is way too dense for a layman like me.

Pretty much what I am looking for is/are a source/s that is basically structured as such:

  • this is whats happening with this company/in the world, if it goes down this way this happens to the stock, if things down down this other way then this happens to the stock. John, Dick, and Harry are the major executives in play in the decision making process.

Where do I go to find this kind of information?

Thanks!

Trader Account Question??? Need some legal help..

My father-in-law recently passed away, and his wife is dealing with his finances and whatnot.

If she's able to get into his etrade account, would there be any repercussions with how she handles withdrawing his current balance and closing the account?

I'd assume - No. But to be on the safe side I'm asking the question..there was another issue in which she had to find a lawyer to help her with an apartment they owned only being in his name.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks..

Smaller Stock Exchanges

About me. I'm 18 on a working holiday to NZ as a gap year before university. This is my time to learn as much as possible and have nothing to lose. So might as well invest, try my hand at the stock market, see how I like it. I've read a couple of books on financial literacy and stock market investing, however...

They all focus on big markets like NYSE. The NZX is way smaller and I'm finding it extremely difficult to analyze stocks (mainly compare them to competitors). E.g. The only telecommunications stock in the NZX is Spark, though they have 2 major competitors in NZ. How am I supposed to compare Spark and tell if it's a good investment or not? (this is just an example, but it's a similar situation with many other industries).

Extreme growth in GPU space - $AMD and $NVDA up 310% and 250%, respectively, over the last year

People are referring to new chipsets, product lines, etc. However, I've never seen "simple" events such as new product lines drive growth on this level except for extremely young, emerging industries. These companies have been around for years and years.

For BOTH of these companies (which are essentially the only players) to each increase over 250% in a year, IMO, signifies a fundamental market shift, or these were severely undervalued. We would be shocked if Coke and Pepsi both doubled their stock prices without one cannabalizing the other's growth. Yet these two are both on fire. I think gaming and especially VR are huge drivers of growth, but gaming/computing has been around for a while and VR is not yet mature. Thoughts?

Piotroski green

Piotroski F-score is a stock financial rating system. I use this website http://ift.tt/2hlykpr if you follow the link you will find a stock that is rated 8 which is high and gets a green colour. Piotroski F is not the be all and end all, it does not tell you about value, if the stock is trending up or down but it is a good start and I have found it quite rare to get a green showing 8 or 9 for a stock. I went through the top Dow Jones and Nasdaq stock and only found 19 - all 8's. I only ever found one 9 it was NVDA but it has since slipped to a 7. Here is my list if you find any others please share them on this thread. ULTA,PYPL,ADBE,FL,MO,DW,ALXN,SBAC,FISV,MRK,CCL,SLAB,AGX,ROST,ESRX,HD,ANSS,HCA,TXN. The rating does not work for Financial institutions so don't look in that sector.

University for Trading?

Hey Reddit,

I finished high school around 2 years ago and recently found my passion for trading stocks in the stock market. I want to get an education which will improve my trading skills and get me a job as a trader at an investment bank or hedge fund.

What degree/ university would lead me to get a good job in the finance industry? (Somewhere in the EU, preferably Scandinavia or Scotland (free education))

Also since a lot of trading in many companies is becoming computerized do you reckon there will be jobs for traders in the future? Would there be a good pay having a trading job?

2017 Stock Market Agenda

Just read this piece on the markets overview for 2016 http://ift.tt/2hIqgzL

Market movements this year were influenced by: brexit, presidential elections, the Opec deal etc.

What is on the political agenda (Worldwide) which will be important to watch in 2017. Let's all add issues to have a good view of the macro agenda, only events likely to influence markets (even if not instantly and only act as catalysts for a change in trend in upcoming months).

This format would be great. Event-date-potential affected markets. Ill start off with

-Trump Cabinet members approval by Senate- January 2017 - Long Russia =>If Tillerson is approved, it could be a catalyst for sanctions lifted as market views it as a step in the path to lifting sanctions

Apple Inc.: Should You Invest in Apple Stock?

Should you buy apple stock?Revenue dropped 15%, but at $42.4 billion, the company managed to keep its revenue above the expected $42.1 billion thanks to higher-than-expected “iPhone” sales. As for iPhones in particular, the company sold 40.4 million units, which beat expectations of 39.9 million units. But is Apple’s stock a “Buy” now and what is the Apple stock forecast? Apple stock in 2016 will remain volatile. Investors want to believe in a comeback and they are apparently willing to forego reality checks. They were willing to muster a bullish response even as Apple sales—when it comes down to it—simply proved they were dropping.Yes, Apple also said that the iPhone is still able to draw customers into the company’s stores. Indeed, Apple suggested that iPhone sales have finally reached a bottom. Yet iPhone sales in key markets like China dropped by 33% amid growing competition with local brands.

Coca-Cola Buys Equity Stake in Coca-Cola Africa From AB InBev For $3.15 Billion

Coca-Cola buys African stake from AB InBev as mega brewer sheds assets following Anheuser Busch and SAB Miller merger. Anheuser-Busch InBev SA (BUD) has sold its controlling stake in Coca-Cola Africa to Coca-Cola (KO) for just over $3 billion, the company said Wednesday, as the world's biggest brewer continues to shed assets as a result of its merger earlier this year. The deal will see Coca-Cola KO pay $3.15 billion for a 54.5% equity stake in Coca-Cola Beverages Africa, along with bottling interests in southern Africa and central America with will eventually be refranchised, the Coca-Cola said.

Pets.com share price when the DOW crossed 10,000

On CNBC Fast Money today one of the traders (I think it was Karen Finerman) made a point comparing Dow 20K to Dow 10K and used Pets.com to draw an example. Her point was something along the lines of -- March 1999 - Pets.com was trading at a nuts valuation. We don't have anything like that now.

I'd like to actually check Pets.com share price in 1999/2000. I can see the thing had a symbol of IPET, IPOed in early 2000 and liquidated in late 2000. What I want is daily quotes for that period. Yahoo does not give historic quotes for symbols that no longer trade.

Anyone know how to get that data?

Apologies to whomever was asking about $FIT a couple days ago.

I previously owned this stock and I want to apologize to another reddit user whom I discouraged from purchasing this stock. It is ridiculously cheap and oversold. Fitbit ads are popping up in a lot of places so this company is obviously putting up a fight rather than rolling over and taking it like gopro. Fit carries very little debt and has plenty of cash on hand, so I feel like they have an image problem. Everytime I see an ad of there's (I think most recently during Monday Night Football but dont remember to be honest) they begin to brand themselves. This may be a breakthrough stock in 2017, we shall see, but the price makes it extremely attractive.

Why Palo Alto Networks Stock Could Be in Trouble

Palo Alto Networks Inc (NYSE:PANW) fell one percent on Monday as an analyst note reiterated an “Outperform” rating but lowered the price target. This isn’t exactly terrible news for Palo Alto Networks stock, as the company still maintained a positive outlook going forward, but the note from FBN Securities' Shebly Seyrafi, which pegged the price target to $155.00 from $170.00, certainly will give some investors pause

Help understanding the stock market please

I don't know if this is the appropriate subreddit for this, but I just need some basic help understanding the stock market.

So my AP Macroeconomics class is currently playing the stock market game, which is just a virtual stock exchange on the website called marketwatch.com. We all start off with $250,000 and we have until January 20 to make money on the stock market. I'm more of a science and engineering person than anything related to business and economics, so I'm pretty much completely lost when it comes to how to turn a profit in this game. My teacher briefly introduced the concepts of short-selling and buying into businesses that are going public, but that's about it. She also told us it's best to invest in volatile stocks, but I don't know what she really means by that.

Does anybody have any tips or tricks for how to make money in such a short amount of time? Are there any companies I should invest in or are there certain times that are the best to invest? Anything is appreciated. Thanks a lot!

[Weekly Charting] I'll analyze the top 10 stock tickers posted in the comments and make a video with my analysis

I'm a swing/day trader and will do some short term chart/fundamental analysis on the top 10 tickers posted here. I might throw in some thoughts longer term but mostly you should assume a shorter term trade (days to weeks).

If you want a chart analyzed respond with the following (REQUIRED):

  1. Ticker
  2. Long or short (i.e. do you think it will go up or down)

Rules (READ THESE AND FOLLOW THEM):

  1. ONE idea per post (otherwise we don't know which is being upvoted) Feel free to make multiple posts though...try to keep it to 2 or 3 if possible so we get a good variety

  2. No OTC or foreign companies.

  3. No options, futures, forex, etc. Equities only.

  4. If you don't post both a ticker AND a direction (long/short) I can't analyze it

  5. If you see one you want analyzed already posted, upvote it.

  6. If you miss the thread but still want a ticker analyzed, look for the YouTube link and post your idea in the YouTube comments. I'll respond there via text!

I'll do the top 10 most upvoted or the 10 most common that follow all the rules. If there are ties I'll do them based on who posted the earliest.

I'll edit the post and post the video at the top in bold after I let the thread run for a while and collect tickers!

Have fun!

Trading on non-public information made available through criminal networks?

Hello, I'm wondering if trading on information obtained from connections in various cybercrime networks would be considered illegal. The information obtained is not sourced from an officer or employee of the company. It's usually in the form of special knowledge about a data leak or large DDoS attack.

I am not involved with the cybercrimes, I just hear about them before the general public.

If there is regulation forbidding this, could someone point me to specific statues/case law? Thanks :)

Security Analysis - Benjamin Graham - relevent?

The book represents the genesis of financial analysis and corporate finance. However, by the 1970s, Graham stopped advocating a careful use of the techniques described in his text for security analysts in selecting individual stock investments, citing that "in the light of the enormous amount of research now being carried on, I doubt whether in most cases such extensive efforts will generate sufficiently superior selections to justify their cost. To that very limited extent I'm on the side of the "efficient market" school of thought now generally accepted by the professors." So is this book relevent to our days? Should I read it? Thanks for the input :) P.S. Info source is wikipedia

New to Options Trading, Please Help Me Makes Sense of This

Trying to get the hang of placing calls and puts for options trading. I drew a schematic of a theoretical call situation and was wondering how this works out if I exercise my options of buying 100 shares of this stock on the Aug 29 date once it passes my call price of $2.50 a share that I placed for the Aug 30 date? Does this mean if I decide to purchase when it passes the Aug 29 price I will do so at the $2.50 a share price, but if I waited until my contract expires on Aug 30 I would be buying it at $2.50 still when it is actually worth more?

Thanks!

The r/StockMarket Weekly Stock Picking Challenge for the Week of (12/19 - 12/23) is now OPEN for picks! ***RATIONALE REQUIRED!!***

Welcome to the r/StockMarket Weekly Stock Picking Challenge for the Week of (12/19 - 12/23)

PLEASE READ THESE RULES THOROUGHLY BEFORE POSTING UP YOUR STOCK PICKS!

If you want to be eligible to participate in this week's challenge here is what you need to do (REQUIRED!):

  • 1.) Post 2 tickers (ex. AAPL = Apple) but YOU MUST pick 2 not just 1 or else I will not add you to our list of contestants!
  • 2.) Choose either Long or Short for each ticker (Obviously LONG - if you think it will go up ... or SHORT - if you think it will go down this week...)
  • 3.) Both of your picks MUST each be at least $2 at the very minimum! If you pick something that is under $2 then you pick will not count, and you will not be entered into this week's challenge!

Challenge Rules (READ THESE AND FOLLOW THEM!):

  • 1.) No OTC, ADRs, or Foreign companies.
  • 2.) No Options, Futures, Forex, stuff like that... Equities ONLY that trade on the U.S. Stock Exchange!
  • 3.) If you don't post both the ticker AND the direction (LONG/SHORT) you won't be added to the list of contestants for this week's stock picking challenge!
  • 4.) You cannot duplicate someone's exact play! For example- If someone picks AAPL - Long and BAC - Long first then you can only pick AAPL - Short and BAC - Long or AAPL - Long and BAC - Short <-- you may only duplicate 1 pick but not BOTH! This is a first come, first serve basis here.
  • 5.) Picks absolutely MUST be posted in here before the 9:30AM eastern cash market open on Monday morning!
  • 6.) You are only allowed 1 leveraged ETF. If you choose two, the second of the two does not count and is still up for grabs. If incorrect picks go un-noticed, you risk your position being forfeited! (These are the 2x/3x ETF's)
  • 7.) RATIONALE - You MUST post up a rationale (either technical or fundamental) for both of your picks or you will NOT be entered into this week's challenge!
  • 8.) Please DO NOT EDIT your picks!! If you absolutely must choose another pick, please use a separate post and state that you are changing your original pick to something else!

I will post up the live challenge spreadsheet a little after the market closes on Monday with everyone's picks posted, this will include your opening prices, current prices, P&L, & Total ROI for each of your picks, as well as an overall total ROI and an overall average ROI between 2 of your picks, and that will be what we will use to total up both of your 2 picks!

In addition, since we're doing this challenge on Reddit, no one will be able to close out their picks during the trading week... Everyone's picks will close at Friday's close! And also everyone's picks will start at Monday's opening prices.

Good luck to everyone in here! Let's see who can deliver the 2 best picks for this week and take bragging rights as the best stock picker of the week here at r/StockMarket! :P

If you have any questions about anything feel free to fire away on this thread...

Hope to see a pretty nice show of participation in here this week from everyone at r/StockMarket! :)

Again please try to get those 2 picks in before the 9:30am eastern cash market open on Monday! Ready, set, GO!!!

Have fun all and GLTA this upcoming trading week ahead! :)

Since it appears /u/Slightly_Communist has completely run away with this week's challenge since Day #1 (nice job S_C!), I thought to get next week's challenge thread up a bit earlier than usual. Also, as we are approaching the holidays this will indeed be our final weekly stock picking challenge this year here on r/StockMarket until the new year 2017.

I just want to take this time out thank all of you who have have participated on our weekly challenges here this year! It was a lot of fun to run here on this sub. And I hope to carry these on into the new year.

Also, as I may not get an opportunity to say this next week -- I just want to wish all of you here at r/StockMarket as well as all of your families & friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year 2017! Where has this 2016 gone? Only 2 weeks left? Wow!

Anyway, I hope you all have a fantastic time this holiday! Enjoy it! ;-)

Catch you all in the new year!

Why is the chart of USO different from the chart of WTI

USO is supposed to be an oil fund tracking price of oil. WTI is the price of benchmark oil, but price charts of these two differ a lot. Anyone know why?

Nutanix Stock Gains A Massive ~13% Driven By A Host Of Factors

A host of reasons seem to have triggered the spike, which was backed by higher than average volumes. For starters, there has been a lot of positive news flow, including a slew of extremely bullish reports. In fact, NTNX stock is still trading below the consensus price target, even after yesterday's rally.

I was wondering if I could get some advice.

I am doing a school assignment soon using the stock market. We get 50k and are told to invest in the stock market over a few weeks. This will be happening later but I was wondering if anyone could help me with it. We only get access to a small portion but it's part of a government program and uses real, live data.

Thanks

ThinkScript help needed for TOS

I'm unfamiliar with coding, and I need something very basic and straight forward. I need a perpetual alert for TOS that alerts me when price approaches a 21EMA on a 4hr and 1hr time scale. That's it. I have the alert creator open, but I can't figure out what value is "approaching" or a reasonable threshold. I would say, within $2 would be good. I would also like the alert permanent. Is this possible, and can anyone help?

S&P 500 Index Funds

I have wanted to put some money into an S&P Index Fund for a bit now and I now have the comfort in my funds to do so. I am doing it with the plan to leave it in there until I retire (I am 23) and something that interests me to just watch grow and track through the years. My question is with the S&P being at an all time high, is now a bad time to do so? I know thinking I or anyone can time the market is a terrible idea and that the S&P is always hitting all time highs and has been going up forever. However, with it being this high at the current time is it not a great time or I already missed most of the rise and I might as well get in now and trust that it is going to continue.

Long Shire to the upper trend line at ~£50

SHP looks like a buy between~£41.75-45.00.

A close below the trend line would make me pretty nervous and I'd probably exit the trade. In the current environment I suspect that with indices at all time highs it would be a macro factor that would trip people out of the trade than a company specific factor.

Hello Everyone - Super Beginner

I have a couple of Questions I would like to ask, please mind that I am a complete beginner: 1) Where can I follow the stocks? Is there an offical site? 2) What is the minimal price a company can sell a stock for? 3) At which age can you start buying shares? 4) Does working with a broker cost anything upfront? Thank you :)

Amazon today announced that it has started a small private drone delivery trial in the UK. It’s currently working with only two shoppers who can now order their goods by drone.
