Bid Ask question
Is there anyway to place a bid over automatically 1 cent over the current bid price( for non-penny stocks). I want to buy in but I see there are a lot of sellers and the bid ask spread is pretty big but I'm pretty sure I can get a bid order filled but sometimes it will jump ahead before I finish typing and clicking my order in. I just wondering if theres any way to automatically put in a bid order at one cent above the current so I can get it filled asap and if you know of any platforms that may offer something along the lines of it. Thank you.

FOMC concludes QE3 full details and more...
"Steady as she goes" was expected... having kept the "considerable time" dream alive last month, the FOMC ended QE3 on schedule but remained 'data-dependent' on reviving it...
- FED ENDS THIRD ROUND OF QUANTITATIVE EASING AS PLANNED
- FED SEES `SOLID JOB GAINS' WITH LOWER UNEMPLOYMENT
- FED: UNDERUTILIZATION OF LABOR RESOURCES GRADUALLY DIMINISHING
- FED REPEATS RATES TO STAY LOW FOR `CONSIDERABLE TIME'
- FED REPEATS RISK OF BELOW-TARGET INFLATION DIMINISHED SOMEWHAT
- FED SAYS LOWER ENERGY PRICES TO HOLD DOWN INFLATION NEAR TERM
- KOCHERLAKOTA DISSENTS AT FOMC, SEEKING QE CONTINUATION
The Committee judges that there has been a substantial improvement in the outlook for the labor market since the inception of its current asset purchase program. Moreover, the Committee continues to see sufficient underlying strength in the broader economy to support ongoing progress toward maximum employment in a context of price stability. Accordingly, the Committee decided to conclude its asset purchase program this month. The Committee is maintaining its existing policy of reinvesting principal payments from its holdings of agency debt and agency mortgage-backed securities in agency mortgage-backed securities and of rolling over maturing Treasury securities at auction. This policy, by keeping the Committee's holdings of longer-term securities at sizable levels, should help maintain accommodative financial conditions.
more details to come as they become available...stay tuned

Feedback for New Investment Platform
I created this website and what it is is an collaborative investment platform. What's different is that users can curate topics relevant to what they like, which means that they can "subscribe" to individual companies or groups, ranging from technology to corporate finance. There's also a lot more security analysis, which a lot of users (/r/investing, /r/securityanalysis, /r/wallstreebets) in other related subs that would like, which is a bit more diversity and some have even migrated.
Everything on the site isn't perfect yet, but I really wanted to get some feedback on the functionality, what should be there and what shouldn't, the layout, UI. I consulted other technical sources but I really want to get the input of an investment focused subreddit. Do you see yourself using it? How can it be improved to suit you?
Those who want something more in terms of different companies to discuss with more activity, learning and discussing about specific industries and other investment topics, I urge you to check out Inqora Still in beta stage, so its free to mold into something that suits everyone. Any feedback would be awesome.

iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology Index Tops: Amgen, Gilead Exhaustion
Just a couple months ago, Janet Yellen issued a warning that biotechnology may be in a bubble. Today, the iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology Index (ETF) (NASDAQ:IBB) are 20% higher. While Janet Yellen was wrong at the time, we should all remember that Alan Greenspan issued the same warning on Dot.com companies in the late 1990's. He was early on that call but ultimately right.
Based on technical analysis, it appears biotechnology may have reached a top yesterday. Why? First, the daily chart put in a significant top signal (doji). Today, the move is confirming as the index is declining. This came on the back of an explosive move known to traders and investors as a blow-off top (previous 2 weeks). In addition, stocks like Amgen, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) and Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) reported earnings. Significant distribution appears to be taking hold on these names. Ultimately, while timing is not Fed Chair Janet Yellen's forte, nor was it Greenspan's, it is important to take it as an important heads up. Combining their viewpoint and the charts could yield a significant shorting opportunity worth 30% or more.

AAP vs ORLY - auto parts and earnings cyclicality
I was looking into AAP - and its competitor ORLY - and I noticed a strange pattern in the earnings.
AAP has the reverse cyclicality of ORLY, even though they're in the same sector. AAP tends to have its peak earnings in Q1, which is followed by decreasing NI throughout the year (until the next Q1). Meanwhile, ORLY has steadily increasing NI from Q4 to a peak of NI in Q3 the following year. AZO is similar.
Can anyone explain to me why AAP is reverse to other auto parts suppliers? I thought in general auto parts sellers would follow together.

Is AMD an undervalued stock?
Trading at only 2.68 per share with a tiny market cap of 2.06B, AMD has caught my attention as a potential longer term purchase. They are the number two manufacturer of consumer oriented computer chips, after Intel. Although they are not as fast or as efficient as the Intel chips, they are still widely considered an alternative for people looking to spend less on their home pc or laptop. INTC is selling at 33.60 per share with a market cap of 166B. Am I the only one who thinks that AMD stock prices will likely go up from here?

Is a demand/need for a unifying webapp for stock trading?
Hello everyone, I hope this isn't off topic? As I've been travelling along this journey of understanding financial investments I've found my list of websites growing and growing and began to wonder whether or not there is a need for a website that can bring together all these things.
For example I like
Investopedia, for it's portfolio manager and simulator
Finviz, for it's screener and signal discovery
Tradingview, for it's charts
Yahoo & Google, for it's on demand data, financial statements, and option chains
etc etc
Put simply I was wondering if it would be worth my time putting together a single website that could bring together all this stuff. Would such a website be interest to you?

I did not buy into any of the past panic - All economic indicators are sound
Lets look at some FRED data: Cars and Heavy Trucks had a spectacular August, and a slight pull back in September.Long term insured unemployment is reducing, gas is getting cheaper and retail sales are up.
Then I found this indicator also not showing any slowing down, so have the last couple of weeks been a unnecessary hype? Hurting our pockets, and once over the S&P500 will rise to 2000+. For me this is an investment opportunity as I do not see, from the indicators, a recession in 2015. Beyond that? 2016 being election year things will remain positive.

Note the oil's share in GDP. The keyword in this paragraph is PROPERTY
Energy made up 24.6% of Alberta’s gross domestic product last year, and all but a handful of Canadian oil and gas producing companies are headquartered in Calgary. The city, and the province, has seen long-term busts before. Dreadful ones. They can cause wounds in every corner of Alberta, from property values and employment to government finances.

Am I doing options right?
So I've been practicing with a virtual account to get a feel for options. I first started with $100k and beat that amount down into dirt, leaving myself with about $5k thanks to some stupid calls right before the market shat itself. Started over with $25,000. I didn't want to risk it all on one call or put so I split it into 2 halves of $12,500. I've been following Tesla pretty closely and after this recent crash I felt they were staring to slowly rebound. It was trading at $226 a share. I bought 57 call contracts at $218 at a strike price of $228 for $12,426. I then spent the remaining $12,500 on 56 put contracts at $220 per contract with a strike price of $224. Then I waited. The market opened and Tesla jumped up to around $232. I immediately jumped ship on the puts, selling for $0.25 a contract and sold my calls for $500 per contract. All in all, I made about $3,740 in 4 trades. I feel like just betting all your money on options trying to predict where the market is going is pretty much gambling, and yeah, I made way less money than if I had put all $25k into the calls, but that would incredibly risking considering how the market has been acting. I bumped up numbers for the initial capital. With $100k, I made around $15k. $500k made me $73k and $1 million made me $147k. This seems pretty easy since I am protecting myself for both the good and the bad, making money either way the market swings. If I missed something about how options work, or if something is off, please comment. I would love to know before I start playing with real money.

Whats does everyone think of T-Mobile(TMUS)
A broker at the firm I work at, has been a big bull on TMUS especially now, its trading very low. It has the potential for a take over. What do you all think? Im asking for personal opinions. Obviously I will not make any trade based on this forum. Just wonder what Reddit has to say. Thanks in advance

Equity Research Reports
Hey everyone.
This may be a bad place to ask this but I figured I'd give it a shot. I want to begin writing equity research reports to hopefully improve my skills. Can anyone recommend a place to get free, quality reports? If not free, how about inexpensive? I know the best way to learn is to read other ones.
Thanks!

Finally some good news! Industrial Output in U.S. Rises!
Combined with the excellent jobs reports today, I think we can say safely that the market down-turn has been driven by a lot of macro-factors and that the fundamentals of a strong economy are still there. This is really good news. Hope we get more from earnings this afternoon/tomorrow.

Would you guys be interested in a website/mobile app that shows Discounted Cashflow valuation for a stock ? (xpost from /investing )
I have just begun to learn about valuations and investing. I use excel for doing calculations, but I see myself doing a lot of manual typing. I was thinking of building a website/mobile app that can do the valuations by itself. Does anyone find this useful ? If not , is there any other task that you do a lot and would like to be done automatically for you ?

Could I affectivley increase my funds investing in i.e. RSH?
Hey,
So I've seen RSH bounce around fairly much, and I would like to know if I could make money of this. The biggest jump I've seen it do last time was from I believe 0.57 to approximately 1.40 / 1.50.
I see it jumps up and down around 0.20 quite often, now can I make money investing in the lows? Would it be reasonable by the commisions? Why not?
Thanks people, and if you have any information generally I'd be pleased to hear about it.

I believe that I can predict the markets. So I'm going to try and prove it here
Ever since I was a little kid, I felt like I could tell which number were going to come next. Every day I will comment on this thread (with no edits) on which way the price of gold (GLD) will go. If I can predict it 15/20 days would you guys be impressed? I will also predict the amount of dollars up though I am far less accurate with this.
So yeah, I will comment my prediction for the next day on this thread every day and at the end I will link it back to /r/stockmarket if it goes as expected. This is just a stunt and I have nothing to sell to anyone. I have no positions and am not planning to start any positions in GLD within a month.
I have never seen a thread like this before, just ignorant predictions with no follow up. I wouldn't do this if I didn't think I could. Go ahead downvote me! Call me a schizophrenic for thinking I can do this! On second thought, only do those things if I am actually wrong. I will make sure not to edit this post or the comments. Wish me luck!
First prediction: Tomorrow gold green ~0.75%

Download PDF Phase 1/2 Clinical Trials of RPE Cells for the Treatment of Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Stargardt’s Macular Degeneration Show Positive Long Term Safety Results and Signs of Visual Improvement

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.-- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. ("ACT"; OTCBB: ACTC), a leader in the field of regenerative ophthalmology, announced today that Phase 1/2 clinical data published online in The Lancet demonstrate positive long-term safety results using ACT’s proprietary Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) cells for the treatment of Stargardt’s macular degeneration (SMD) and dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The publication features data from 18 U.S.-based patients with at least six months of post-transplant follow-up.
“These study results represent an important milestone and strengthen our leadership position in regenerative ophthalmology,” said Paul K. Wotton, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer. “We would like to thank the patients for their willingness to participate in these studies. Our findings underscore the potential to repair or replace tissues damaged from diseases. We plan to initiate comprehensive Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of both AMD and SMD, two disease states where there is currently no effective treatment.”
These two studies provide the first evidence of the mid- to long-term safety, survival, and potential biologic activity of pluripotent stem cell progeny into humans with any disease. In addition to showing no adverse safety issues related to the transplanted tissue, anatomic evidence confirmed successful engraftment of the RPE cells, which included increased pigmentation at the level of the RPE layer after transplantation in 13 of 18 patients.
Robert Lanza, M.D., Chief Scientific Officer of ACT and co-senior author of the paper, commented, “Diseases affecting the eye are attractive first-in-man applications for this type of investigational therapy due to the immune-privileged nature of the eye. Despite the degenerative nature of these diseases, the vision of 10 of 18 patients showed measurable improvement at the six month follow up, after transplantation of the RPE cells. Furthermore, the cells have been well tolerated for a median period of 22 months with two of the patients treated more than three years ago. We are pleased that there have been no serious safety issues attributable to the cells observed in any of the patients.”
Vision was measured using the widely accepted standard for visual acuity testing, the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) visual acuity exam.
Steven Schwartz, M.D., Ahmanson Professor of Ophthalmology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and retina division chief at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute, principal investigator and lead author of the publication said “The data published in The Lancet support the potential safety and biological activity of stem cell-derived retinal tissue. Once again, surgical access to the subretinal space has proven safe. However, for the first time in humans, terminally differentiated stem cell progeny seem to survive, and do so without safety signals. Combined with the functional signals observed, these data suggest that this regenerative strategy should move forward. This is a hopeful and exciting time for ophthalmology and regenerative medicine.”
About the Trials
The SMD and dry AMD trials are prospective, open-label studies designed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived RPE cells following sub-retinal transplantation into patients at 12 months, the studies’ primary endpoint. Three dose cohorts were treated for each condition in an ascending dosage format (50,000 cells, 100,000 cells, and 150,000 cells). Both the SMD and dry AMD patients had subretinal transplantation of fully-differentiated RPE cells derived from hESCs. In addition to the two clinical trials in the U.S., ACT is carrying out a Phase 1/2 clinical trial of hESC-derived stem cells for the treatment of SMD in the United Kingdom.
About Age-related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 50, with late stage AMD affecting about 30 million people worldwide. Dry AMD, accounts for 90 percent of all AMD and occurs when light-sensitive cells in the macula, located in the center of the retina, slowly break down, causing vision loss. As the disease progresses, patients may have difficulty reading and recognizing faces. There is currently no proven medical therapy for dry AMD. Including the earlier stages of disease, the projected number of people worldwide with age-related macular degeneration in 2020 is 196 million, increasing to 288 million in 2040 underscoring the urgent need for new treatments.
About Stargardt’s Disease
Stargardt’s macular degeneration is a form of juvenile macular degeneration that affects vision in children and young adults between the ages of six and 20, with a prevalence of approximately one in 10,000 people. Loss of vision is an inevitable aspect of SMD, with more than half of patients experiencing vision loss in the range of 20/200-20/400. Like dry AMD, there are no treatments currently approved to prevent or slow the vision loss associated with SMD.

Stem cells to treat blindness appear to be safe
LONDON An experimental treatment for blindness that uses embryonic stem cells appears to be safe, and it improved vision in more than half of the patients who got it, two early studies show.
Researchers followed 18 patients for up to three years after treatment. The studies are the first to show safety of an embryonic stem cell treatment in humans for such a long period.
"It's a wonderful first step but it doesn't prove that (stem cells) work," said Chris Mason, chair of regenerative medicine at University College London, who was not part of the research. He said it was encouraging the studies proved the treatment is safe and dispelled fears about stem cells promoting tumor growth.
Embryonic stem cells, which are recovered from embryos, can become any cell in the body. They are considered controversial by some because they involve destroying an embryo and some critics say adult stem cells, which are derived from tissue samples, should be used instead.
Scientists have long thought about transforming them into specific types of cells to help treat various diseases. In the new research, scientists turned stem cells into retinal cells to treat people with macular degeneration or Stargardt's macular dystrophy, the leading causes of blindness in adults and children.
In each patient, the retinal cells were injected into the eye that had the worst vision. Ten of the 18 patients later reported they could see better with the treated eye than the other one. No safety problems were detected. The studies were paid for by the U.S. company that developed the treatment, Advanced Cell Technology, and were published online Tuesday in the journal, Lancet.
Dr. Robert Lanza, one of the study authors, said it was significant the stem cells survived years after the transplant and weren't wiped out by the patients' own immune systems. For some of the patients, Lanza noted their improved vision changed their lives, referring to a 75-year-old horse rancher who had been blind in one eye before the treatment.
"One month after his treatment, his vision had improved (substantially) and he can even ride his horses again," Lanza said in an email. He said other patients have regained their independence with their newfound vision and said some people are now able to use their computers again, read their watches or travel on their own.
"The next step will be to prove these (stem cell) treatments actually work," Mason said. "Unless there is a sham group where you inject saline into (patients') eyes, we can't know for sure that it was the stem cells that were responsible."

Been offered a Job at a Prop Traders in London - do I take it?
Basically I don't have any trading experience apart from my own few shares. I did great in the interview as I've done a lot of reading and I really, really want to be a trader.
Basically it's a 3 month career program costing a £4,000 deposit. After that they offer you a job with them for 12 months - the desk spot costs me £1,000 per month and I get 50% commission from anything I make from the £10,000 kitty they give me (and rising). You get the £4,000 deposit back over the course of the year.
Is this a good move for me? Or is this a shitty job well known to people in the industry? Is there an easier way into a trading career? I went a top University studying Engineering but quit after 2 years because I hated it/it wasn't for me. My school grades are exemplary, though. Important to note I'm only 21!

GPRO down 10% today. how will it recover?
Seeing how the comments of Jean-Louis Moncet about the serious injury of Michael Schumacher affected the value of GPRO, I wonder how GPRO will recover. I'm under the impression that GPRO was so popular lately for investors that a lot of people will buy while it's lower, but will we see 110-120$ in the next weeks?
Let's discuss it!
BTW: I don't have any position opened there, I sold at 88$ on its first way up.

Recent grad with 30k debt, want to get involved in stock market. Advice?
I just started reading The Intelligient Investor. I'm 22 years old. I want to become an intelligient investor (hah). Is there a way to invest for relatively short term gains (a couple of years) to help me pay off debt?
I am already putting in 5% income into Vanguard 401k. Company matches up to 5%. After taxes/insurance/rent/food/gas, I have a little less than 2k/month to save.
A colleague suggested starting a dividend account and putting a few hundred in it a month, but I don't even know how I'd do that.
I'd like to invest about 400 a month in the market, either in a variety of stocks or funds. I know most trade websites are 5-10$/trade though, so I don't know how to do this profitably.
I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm going to read this book and study investopedia, but other than that, can someone lead me in the right direction?

RNET - Thoughts?
RigNet, Ticker (Nasdaq: RNET) Trading close to 52 week low, but I like it as a growth play given its growing market share/service offerings, I think now's a good time to get in on it. Any thoughts?

I'm on edge
I don't know how Day/Swing traders do it, commissions aside, the cost of new underwear has to be outrageous. Up $80 by 10am, down $160 by 10:30 and back to even by 11. I should just put all of my money in bitcoins. Cryptocurrency is like cryptozoology right? All unicorns and rainbows, right?

On this very day today 6yrs ago marks the DJIA's largest ever one-day point range/swing in history...
here is the chart of that week/month in 2008 (that was some wicked long-legged doji candle on a daily chart if i have ever seen one)-
and here is a thread i have up for anyone interested to sorta relive that infamous day, i posted a few charts/videos up in there-
also, i'm just curious to hear how many of us here on this particular subreddit were trading back in those wild market days in 2008/09? particularly on this day...
idk about y'all, but that certainly ranked up there as one of the craziest trading sessions that i can remember being apart of as a trader, ever...
yowza, those were the days lol

Why is the P/E (2.76) so low for Delta Airlines? (DAL)
After messing around with the stock screener on Google I came across Delta Airlines. It seems like an incredible investing opportunity, but at the same time the super low PE has made me question why it's this low. Is there NO growth at all expected for them? Seems like a steal to me. Inform me, Reddit! What do you smart fellows in r/stockmarket think?

Industrial services sector (NYSE:MG; NYSE:FRM; NYSE:TISI)
Mistras Group (NYSE:MG) posted a big 1Q miss today. Anyone have any insight on whether peers NYSE:FRM or even NYSE:TISI could be expecting gains because of this. The total market for this industry supporting midstream infrastructure and other mechanical and inspection services seems strong. Maybe I'm too close to the sun, but it seems like there is an opportunity here...

I've a Trainee Trader interview tomorrow at this Firm and need advice!

As an Engineering Graduate I'm rusty with some definitions so any help would be appreciated.
What kind of interview can I expect? What are clever answers I can give to "Why trading?", or "What makes you good for the job?".
Thanks in advance!
