Some New Year statistics.
Since the market is down today, I thought I find out what the market performance had been for the start of the year. Here's the 15 year stat:
1999 112.03 0.15 -0.97 -0.76 0.07 2000 101.12 -1.89 -1.81 -0.76 1.27 2001 89.23 -1.47 1.08 1.94 0.74 2002 69.97 0.14 3.22 3.59 4.73 2003 89.69 0.09 -0.04 1.88 2.24 2004 99.28 -0.22 -0.46 -2 -2.18 2005 104.08 -0.54 1.76 3.42 3.06 2006 120.57 -0.41 -0.17 -0.39 0.99 2007 126.77 -0.74 -0.88 -4.99 -5.5 2008 80.13 1.43 3.01 0.89 -6.48 2009 101.24 -0.96 1.7 2.82 1.98 2010 116.48 0.02 1.04 1.11 2.82 2011 118.69 -0.49 1.59 2.01 3.06 2012 137.67 1.7 2.56 2.21 3.28 2013 182.15 0.47 -0.96 -0.63 -0.02
The columns are year, close on last day, return on last day of the year and the next three are 1, 5 and 10 day returns respectively.
Quick observation: there's about an even chance of up/down on the last day of the year, but the average return is negative(-0.18%). However, the 1,5 and 10 day returns are all pretty good at about 0.7%. However, on the years where the last day return is negative, the 1,5,10 day returns are significant lower, only about 1/3 as good as the positive year end days.
Let me know if you get anything else out of this data.
Edit: Formatting.

Dividend tracking? Any good apps?
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend me a good app for tracking dividend payments from stocks in my portfolio. I don't DRIP with any of them currently, but just take the monetary payment. I end up having to do most of my trading and tracking on mobile but I cannot find an app capable of automatically tracking dividend payments. Ideally I'd like to just enter the stock symbols I own, date purchased, and quantity, and have the app automatically update dividend payments as they occur. I cannot find anything with this functionality yet so at this point I just enter the dividends manually which is kind of a pain. Does such an app or website exist? Oh, and my portfolio is usually close to 100% TSX so any apps would have to be able to track stuff on that exchange.
Further, I'd also love to hear what apps people recommend for General portfolio tracking as well. Currently I'm using Jstock for android and it's kept me pretty happy.

ARCP - is it fizzling out OR coming back to life
wondering if anyone with more knowledge of how big companies do things has some insight as to what the future may hold for ARCP based on the situation over there - lawsuits, fraud, no management at the helm, credit lines got an extension, stop on dividends - is the ship about to roll and go or is this successful damage control that will save the day?

Mock stock market program?
I was wondering if there is a mock stock market program or website where you can use fake money to invest in stocks but it is connected to the real stock market. For example- I put 100 dollars of fake cash into Apple Stock. That Apple stock actually goes up or down just like the real stock market but I'm using fake cash so I don't get any return.
I just want to do this for fun and help myself get better without losing actually money.

What do you guys think about the new commission free trading app Robinhood?
Basically it's an app pretty much like etrade except 0‰ commission on trades. One of my friends recently got invited to use it since he signed up about a year ago. I just recently signed and I'm behind 500,00+ people who also want the app. It seems like a good tool for those without a lot of capital so that gains can be made without losing it all to commition. Could also be a great tool for beginners

(x-post from /r/investing) The $10,000 Reddit Fund, The Votes Are In
Hey /r/stockmarkets,
The Nvestly team wanted to give you a quick update on the Reddit fund. Original post can be found here.
First and foremost, we wanted to say thanks to everyone who voted on the poll. It was great to see the fund come to life and the chosen stocks look very strong. A few quick updates based on what the community wanted:
- Instead of holding the funds for 3 months, we decided to hold it for an entire year.
- Every 3 months, if the portfolio has shifted significantly, we’ll ask the community if they’d like to re-balance the portfolio. If so, we’ll do a quick poll.
- We’re very open to what to do with the profits. We saw a lot of new great suggestions that weren't included in the original poll. Even though people voted on using the profits to hand out Chipotle burritos to the homeless, we’ll be sure to ask the community again once we cross that bridge.
Now on to the fun part. Here are the winning stocks!
- Financial – Berkshire Hathaway, BRK.B (31% of votes)
- Consumer Discretionary – Walt Disney, DIS (26%)
- Healthcare – Johnson & Johnson, JNJ (34%)
- Materials/Industrial – General Electric, GE (34%)
- Energy – Exxon Mobil, XOM (29%)
- Utilities – None (44%)
- Technology – Apple, AAPL (46%)
- Wildcard – Tesla, TSLA (28%)

I was checking on a European Fund then noticed these suspiciously regular up and downs.
You notice the same up and downs on S&P 500 and many other indexes/funds.
What do you think is causing this?

Any Canadians in here trading on the NYSE/NASDAQ?
Hey guys,
Might be a newb question, but I'm sitting in Canada and I'd like to play in the US markets. I'm currently only trading on the TSX but I'd like to start trading in the US markets in 2015.
If anyone is currently doing this, can you recommend a decent online broker? Do I need to go with a Canadian owned brokerage house or can I open an account in the US although I'm not an American citizen (probably not but you never know I guess)?
Thanks in advance for your help and advice. Also thanks to everyone on this sub for the information and perspectives you guys bring to the table. Very interesting stuff.
Cheers!

Is Scottrade ripping me off?
Maybe someone here can clear up a question I have regarding Scottrade.
I sold short 100 shares of AAL at noon with a limit order @ 51.20 but my Avg Unit Cost was 51.1288. I don't understand this. Why is it not at 51.20? AAL had good liquidity at the time, spreads were only a penny. Is there some special rule regarding shorting that I'm perhaps clueless on. I know the uptick rule and I know orders sometimes usually don't get filled in at exactly the price you want (I'm aware of FOK) but this was a very small order.

Guggenheim (TAN) versus QCLN clean energy ETFS
Comparing two ETFs in the same sector it seems that all the buzz is around TAN, but after some deeper research, it looks like QCLN is stronger overall. I come to this conclusion because * 1 - It's lower expense ratio than TAN * 2 - It's top ten holdings are stronger than TAN's * 3 - Performance over the past 5 years better than TAN
Does anyone know why Guggenheim gets so much attention? QCLN seems clearly a better investment.

I made a historical stock practice trading app. It's free and I'm looking for advice/feedback from fellow traders
Hi everyone,
I am looking for feedback/advice on current usability and features to possibly add.
The gist of my app is that loads anonymous stocks at random times over the last 20 years. You customize your own indicators (SMA, EMA, Bollinger Bands, etc) and choose an oscillator (MACD, etc), then start trading a fake $25k portfolio with the goal of getting it up to $100,000,000.
I've tried to simulate real life decision making traders deal with, such as whether enter long/short, how big the position size should be, when to add to a position, when to scale out of a position, and what indicators to use.
With any app there is a balance between ease of use vs. variety of features. It's tough for an app developer to determine this balance without user feedback.
That's why I am asking for your thoughts. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Some questions about covered calls
I took a test recently and was given this feedback: Can you help me understand why my answers are wrong?
Question 1: When is an investor who has written a covered equity call option likely to be assigned early for a dividend?
My answer: Before any dividend is paid to underlying shareholders.
Correct answer: When the call is in-the-money; its time premium is less than the dividend amount.
Question 2: The risk of being assigned early on covered equity calls will vary with which of the following variables:
Answers:
A. The amount by which the calls are in the money B. Whether the equity option in question is American-style or not C. Whether or not the stock pays a dividend and its ex-date. D. All of the above (I chose D) E. Only A and C
Question 3:
While rolling out a buy/write can generally be done for a credit, rulling up and out may sometimes be done for a credit, sometimes for even money and sometimes for a debit.
True/false. (I chose true).
What makes me wrong? Can't simply having an upcoming EX date increase my chances of early assignment? Isn't American style something that can increase it? Can't call prices vary enough that a roll up/out can be positive, negative, or even?

NOK- opinions on when to sell
Hey everybody,
just wondering what the general consensus price target would be for Nokia. I purchased these shares pre devices sale at 3.99. And have seen the stock settle between 7.70-8.50 for the last 6 months.
I'm generally a very patient investor but my patience is wearing thin with this one waiting for it to achieve what I believe is fair value at closer to $10.
The decision to sell Nokia is one Ive been mulling over daily, I just wanna gauge what this subreddit thinks about Nokia and its prospects.

Jobs Report blows away expectation - (economists laughably wrong as usual)
i knew this jobs report would be strong .... US is growing around 3%, it's laughable that they are keeping rates at 0% for so long -- but that is good for the stock market and the multi national corps who benefit from the extremely low rates ... even raising it 0.25 a few times is still nothing in the scheme of things (although the market isn't used to that for some time now)
the estimates of Steve Liesman and other economists on CNBC laughably wrong as usual -- economists usually fail at predicting things going forward, they just tend to use conservative estimates based on recent inputs
same thing with that one retail sales estimate of 11% decline that came out a week or two ago ... that one was laughably wrong/low (when you take into account online and total sales)
