How can I be aware of atypical conference calls / investor presentations?

Hi all,

I’m looking for a way to keep abreast of important and potentially market-moving news originating from atypical conference calls and investor presentations.

In the same way I avoid trading an equity immediately before and after an earnings release, I would like to do the same when a company has an atypical conference call or investor presentation where it might issue guidance or otherwise announce something that greatly affects its price and volatility...only unlike using an earnings calendar, I see no way in which to do this!

For example, UTX had an investor conference call this week to discuss the acquisition of Collins Aerospace separate from its earnings conference call last month, wherein it was disclosed that free cash flow would likely come up short of previous estimates. The price went down 5%. Is there no way to see such calls in advance to avoid such companies at these times?

Thanks!

Acbff- I bought it in August then it changed tickers? Newbie

I am a newbie, and have no idea what's going on with this stock. I use Robin hood. It was 6.43 when I bought it and now it's worth less, 5.87 or so. I look at it off the app and see it's at 8.69. Why is it different and do I need to do anything?

A couple of stocks I might dump. Advice?

I have made money on COP but my profit on it has eroded a lot, and I think the forecasts have turned more 50/50 on it as opposed to more 70/30 when I first got it. Is there a similar company that has a promising future forecast?

Also, one of the dumbest mistakes I made was buying TRXC so high. It doesn't look so favorable for the stock price to recover. Should I cut my losses, and where would you put it instead?

Is my understanding of basic stock trading sound?

From what I can garner, ownership of a stock grants you rights to partial ownership in a company. When that company's overall value fluctuates, the value of said stock will also fluctuate, since it is a part of that company. Thus, the idea is to buy stocks that an investor believes to be undervalued and will hold long-term gains, purchase them, and hold on to them until their investment goal can be realized i.e. say I want to pay of $5,000 US of student loans within 5 years of graduation. I invest within a diverse number of stocks that I forecast will grow in the long-term and are currently selling for below their actual valuation. I hold onto them until the end of the 5 year mark, sell them for the profit I need and pay off my debt.

Is this understanding sound? Am I missing anything? After this, how can I further my knowledge of stock trading? I'm 16 years old and in high school with an allowance from my father, so at some point I can spend money on learning.

THANK YOU!

Why is GM's P/E Ratio so High?

GM's P/E ratio is 78 compared to Ford's P/E ratio at 6. Is growth from electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles pushing it this high? Or what?

"The primary risk today for GM stock is that these forecasts assume commercial deployments will occur on time. As Mike Ramsey, a lead author on the Gartner report points out, even if GM and Waymo continue to debut driverless minivans or launch ride-hailing fleets, commercial deployments won’t be ready anytime soon. For example, the 2019 Audi A8 with Traffic Jam Assist with Level 3 partial automation, which has been anticipated for some time, has extended it's release date another year due to foggy federal regulatory framework, infrastructural differences, and a lack of consumer understanding of self-driving technology."

S&P 500: equal weight is better than cap weighted

Graph of this issue: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DtLfBz2WsAAdXZE.jpg

Timing is everything. You’d be basking in glory today if you launched a mutual fund 10 years ago that concentrated on mid-cap stocks because they outperformed. You’d be a dunce if you did the same thing in the 1990s because they lagged. Those are the facts behind the recent outperformance of the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index (S&P 500 EWI) and the funds that follow it.

An equal weighted (EW) stock index gives the same weight to each stock in an index. The smallest companies are given equal weight to the largest companies. The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index (S&P 500 EWI) is the equal-weight version of the S&P 500. It has the same constituents as the capitalization weighted S&P 500, but each company is allocated a fixed weight of 0.2 percent quarterly.

Taking a cap-weighted index and turning it into an equal-weighted index will change the average market capitalization of securities held in a fund. The average market capitalization of the S&P 500 is about $58 billion while the average market capitalization of S&P 500 EWI is only $16 billion. Nearly 50 percent of the holdings in the S&P 500 are categorized as mid-cap stocks according to Morningstar.com.

Do you personally prefer to invest in the normal S&P 500? Or do you prefer the equal weight S&P 500 index?

With small caps being expensive, in terms of PE, do you think the equal weight index will continue to outperform over the next 10 years?

What is cost of equity

Hi all, I am new to finance and would like to learn more. I understand that the cost of capital of a company comes from (1) cost of debt and (2) cost of equity.

The cost of debt is the interest that a company need to pay for a loan from bank. How about cost of equity? Is it the rate of return that a company must deliver in order to satisfy the shareholders so that they will keep their share and maintain the share price ? e.g in terms of dividend paid out, increase in earning per share (so share price will rise) ...?

And why is the cost of equity is higher than cost of debt?

The economy is getting worse. What this means for stocks

The U.S. economy is starting to deteriorate. This is most notable in housing (and slightly notable in the labor market)

When this happens, the stock market tends to do ok for the next 6 months, after which it peaks

Opinion on Brookfield stocks

Opinions on Brookfield stocks? BAM, BEP, BIP, BPY, BPR are all the different stocks from Brookfield. I'm wondering what it means when a company has that many stocks for one company. Does this mean if the company is doing good all of these stocks will do good, and if company is doing bad all these stocks will do bad?

Also I'd love to hear general opinions about these stock, all of them besides BAM pay decent dividends.

Please share any information about pros and cons and anything else because I'm not sure if I should invest or not in any of these stocks

How taxes work with stocks

I have a noob question in regards to taxes and the stock market:

I am unsure how I am being taxed when trading on Robinhood. I have been on the app (and also new to the stock market in general) since June of this year. I am24 years old and make $45k/annually. I will admit, I have been short selling stocks since I started. How am I exactly being taxed on each stock? Also, say I made a $1000 profit off of a stock such as Amazon, and then later lost $1500 from Amazon later. Am I taxed for both or how does it all work...I'm also not very educaed with finance so if someone can break it down for me I would appreciate it!

I know I should really educate myself before all of this, but I would appreciate it if someone could answer this question.

Trading is becoming easier! (starting to see results)

I started just like everyone else 5k and a dream. Oh was that first month a straight bloodbath lost nearly every trade kept FOMOing myself into positions I at the core of it just didn't know what I was doing and i'm pretty sure that's probably the worst way to start investing you could have better results at a casino. Then I started learning and really thinking about my positions, there size, the support/resistance, is this an emotional trade? really just going through steps in my head. Other steps I took I got a better broker (TD Ameritrade) using apps to help me when im shorting like think or swim, I also joined a chatroom of like minded individuals started learning from other peoples mistakes not just my own(if you want an invite to this send me a DM its free). Today i'm happy to announce my success is a lot better I actually have strategy with my decisions and I think it makes all the difference.

List of tips

  1. Don’t think much of StockTwits (Trust Me lol)

    1. Utilize other free trading tools rather than praising Robinhood. I started to use TOS and FinViz a lot more!
    2. Find a good trading group! (Recommenced)

Drop a comment or PM for invite to chat

Found old stock certificates... Worth MILLIONS or nothing?

My grandfather is kind of a hoarder but had a stroke recently. He lost the use of his right side of his body and we had to remodel parts of the home for accessibility.

We were going going through his things to organize and I came across dozens (maybe hundred or more) stock certificates. I looked up the company and they didn't exist anymore and I found that it was bought by another company (also in the stock market).

I dont know anything about stocks so what should I do to find find out if these are still worth anything???

JinkoSolar beats estimates

JinkoSolar stock price is up after the company beat forecasts by a large margin. Analysts had been expecting a drop after China cut solar incentives but instead total module shipments increased 24.4%, revenue rose 4.3% and EPS of $0.76 beat the forecast $0.09 loss.

Perhaps analysts should have paid more attention to the company’s August statement that it was immune from industry woes when it didn't change its 2018 shipment guidance. In the end overseas module shipments grew strongly, accounted for almost 80% of total shipments and offset the impact of softened Chinese demand.

For those who don’t mind a bit of China risk the company still looks attractive. In fairness its a global business (not just Chinese) and one of the world’s largest solar panel manufacturers with over 10,000 employees in 38 countries including the US.

The stock is up about 30% since the earnings announcement, but the TTM PE of 15 and 2018f PE 7.0 is hardly expensive.

What about the outlook? The company made some very bullish comments about next year - “We are confident in our ability to further expand our market share with global demand expected to recover next year as solar energy becomes more competitive and grid parity approaches in more key markets”

And also;

“We are confident that Chinese and global demand next year will recover as the cost of solar energy becomes more competitive. This trend is irreversible. We are now ideally positioned with our order book in Q4 almost full from growing overseas markets and our products being in short supply. We will benefit from growth in demand for solar energy and believe we have the right strategy in place to further expand our market share, distinguish ourselves from the competition, and consolidate our leading position in the industry”

This is not a recommendation to buy. Stocks not suitable investment for everyone. Please do your own research.

1 Stock - 1 Trade OR Multiple Stocks - Multiple Trades in Intraday Trading?

I am trading intraday for 1.5 months, So I am new to trading and I need help understanding something. Today I performed tens of trades and made about 650 (450 after taxes) but while I was analyzing stocks aftermarket for next day, I found something interesting.

As I said, I made tens of trades to make some 450 amount. But I found some (Actually, A lot of them) stocks that could make 2.5k to 4.5k in a single day with the same margin if I had made a single trade with all the amount I have in a single stock. And I am thinking to avoid multiple trades so that I do not have to invest too much time constantly looking at the screen as I have one business to manage.

So, I want to start trading only 1 stock a day. 1 stock and 1 trade in a single day. Maybe I can do something like 3 stocks and 3 trades in a day to avoid risking all the money as trades might go wrong and I might lose some (a good amount) money.

I want help when it comes to trusting candlestick patterns in intraday trading if I am considering only 1-2 trades a day. And I also want to know what things I have to keep in mind to change my trading style. By changing the way of trading from multiple trades to single and huge trades in a day, I can maximize my profit at least by 5x.

What do you guys suggest?

Profit growth over the last 10 years in the tech sector

Graph of this issue: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DtFqnAZXcAAV0ck.jpg

Amid the incessant geopolitical tumult coming out of Washington and elsewhere, tech stocks have served as an island to which investors have been able to retreat and earn outsized returns.

In fact, there's an argument to be made that the sector actually has benefited from some of the more prominent headline risks. Tech stands to gain perhaps more than any other sector if President Donald Trump's saber-rattling trade strategy works out, and the administration-backed tax cuts have put more money in shareholders' pockets through a history-making jump in share buybacks that have been skewed toward the sector.

All in all, tech has served a multitude of purposes, from a cyclical play amid economic growth and rising interest rates, and as pure quality amid fears that corporate profits are peaking.

"They're really not driven by a lot of these headline macro variables. They've also stayed out of the Washington limelight in terms of being part of a tweetstorm or what have you," said Matthew Bartolini, head of SPDR Americas Research at State Street Global Advisors. "They're going to be more heavily driven by fundamentals, which continue to be supportive.

Do you think the tech sector will continue to perform like in the shown graph?

The exponential growth is crazy, and the stock market bumps will be hard on the way, I think

New to investing

Hi, I’m a graduating college soon and hoping to get into grad school for my masters in public health.

My goal is to make these ventures a source of income. I’m not focused on retirement right now.

I currently have $10,000 and I’m looking to invest it. I’m new so I started with the acorns app and betterment. I trust the robo investors more than myself. I also have Robinhood but haven’t found any stocks that i truly want to buy yet.

Aside from stocks I’ve a also looked into lending club. I don’t have a significant amount of money and the most I would be comfortable with starting off is $1,000 just to test the waters.

Lastly I want to get into real estate. I’m not comfortable buying a house or even apartment with the limited knowledge I have so crowd funding seems safer. I’ve decided on “rich uncles” to invest in properties.

Any advice or comment about my choices would be welcome. If there are better apps or ways to do this please explain them. Thank you.

  • I haven’t any money into anything except acorns. Needed advice before I begin.

How many more rate hikes can the stock market take? The market was worried when Powell stated the Fed funds rate is far away from the neutral rate meaning more rate hikes are coming.

The middle of the 2020 dot plot has the Fed funds rate between 3.25% and 3.5%. The Fed sees 2 to 3 more hikes than the market.

The first few rate hikes were interesting because financial conditions eased even though you’d expect rate hikes to tighten conditions. That’s because conditions were tight in early 2016 as the economy fell into a sharp slowdown which was almost a recession. Now the hikes are finally making their mark as the financial conditions index is getting tighter.

How Many More Rate Hikes?

How the hell do successful traders actually make money?

I've been trading for nearly 3 years, and quite honestly I stink. I've used every resource I've been able to find, every strategy I can find I've researched, I've tried to learn everything I can. I know that money makers corrupt the market and make it really challenging, but I know that there are some successful traders out there. What do they do? Buy long term hold dividend stocks? Short 'pump and dumps'? Day trade? Swing trade? I've watched the market every day for over 2.5 years, and it's all still so confusing. Anyone have any wisdom?

GLD: Are the ETFs any good?

A question often asked is if ETFs are any good? Do they do reflect the correct prices? There are enough haters of ETFs and ETNs. So I compared GLD and SLV with underlying futures to see the tracking error.

GLD has done a fairly good job of tracking Gold futures especially in the short time periods. Bear in mind that even using futures as instruments it's not possible to track gold prices exactly due to roll over of futures contracts.

Found very similar results for SLV and Silver futures.

Bear in mind, ETFs and ETNs should never be used for long-term investing without considering the counterparty risks that all of them carry.

Naive question: Can you make a substantial profit by knowing whether the Dow Jones will go up or down with 1% more accuracy than you would get by just assuming that both cases are always equally likely to happen?
