Are financial conditions "too easy" right now? Is this bearish for the stock market?

Just looking at Goldman's Financial Conditions Index, you'd think that things are "too easy" (which is usually the prelude to a big correction or bear market.

But if you break down the index, you'll realize that things aren't bearish at all.

How do you make etrade pro bigger on your laptop

Just bought a new, non-Apple laptop, and the etrade pro window/text is TINY. Even if I maximize Pro for the whole screen, ridiculously tiny text remains. Searched google for "how to make Etradepro/Thinkorswim text bigger on laptop" and no hits came up.

Can someone explain how to adjust it to a normal size? preferably like I'm 7 years old? I already tried adjusting resolution and text size--it adjusted the text size for everything but etrade pro.

edit: using windows 10, Dell inspiron. Is the 4k display causing issues?

Hey, I'm very new to the stock market and this incoming year I want to make an effort to educate myself and hopefully invest my money into the right stocks. I was wondering if there's anyone who can recommend some useful resources (books, websites, mentors, etc.) to learn the fundamentals.

Also I'd love to hear some of your predictions for common trends to invest in for 2018?

Can someone answer some questions about stock quotes?

I understand that the ask is the lowest price someone would sell a share for and bid is the highest someone would buy a share for, but what sets these prices?

Say the current ask for stock XYZ is $9.95 for 100 shares and then someone submits a sell order for $9.90 (100 shares), would the new ask price be set to $9.90 on the next quote? Then say I submit a market buy for XYZ for 200 shares, would I get the first 100 shares for $9.90 and then the next 100 for $9.95?

I guess my main question is: does the ask/bid change with each order submitted? If not, how are the bid/ask set based on the current price?

Just read an article saying that the current bull market may be the last. Could this even be possible?

I've been trying to find the link to the article but couldn't. Supposedly this guy made millions in the stock market, predicted recessions, housing market crash, etc. I thought as long there are companies doing business, there will be a cyclical market (upwardly oscillating between bull and bear markets)? Is it theoretically possible to have a "last" bull market?

Features Of Stop And Limit Orders

In stock trading, traders execute an order that becomes executable once a set price has been reached. This is called a stop order. A traditional stop order will be filled in its entirety. Regardless of any changes in the current market price as the trades are completed.

The order that is set at a certain price is called a limit order. This is only executable at times when the trade can be performed at the limit price. Or when the trade can be performed at a price that is considered more favorable than the limit price then limit order is executable. The activity related to the order will be ceased. When a trading activity causes the price to become unfavorable in regards to the limit price.

With the combination of the two orders, the trader has much greater precision in executing the trade. Regardless of the price changes to an unfavorable position. A stop order is filled at the market price after the stop price has been hit. This can lead to trades being completed at less than desirable prices should the market adjust quickly. With the combination of it and features of a limit order, trading is halted once the pricing becomes unfavorable, based on the investor’s limit.

For example, assume that ABC Inc. is trading at $40 and an investor wants to buy the stock once it begins to show some serious upward momentum. Let us assume that the investors have put in a stop-limit order to buy with the stop price at $45 and the limit price at $46. When the price of ABC Inc. moves above $45 stop price. The order is activated and turns into a limit order. Provided that the order can be filled under $46, which is the limit price, the trade will be filled. If the stock gaps above $46, the order will not be filled.

3 Stocks to Watch/Buy in Jan 2018!

If you prefer watching a video, I go more in depth about my picks here: https://youtu.be/89bWtex8irQ

In this month, I'm watching (and most likely buying) 3 companies that I believe will greatly benefit from the record breaking holiday season we just had in December 2017. Consumer spending, especially online, was absolutely dominant during the holiday season, and many companies will benefit from this going into 2018.

  • My first pick is Alibaba (BABA). They had their singles day in November and absolutely shattered records from the previous year in 2016. They had billions of USD in sales in 1 day - which is absolutely insane when you think about it. I believe that December was also a strong month for Alibaba as consumers outside of China spend the most money in December, and Alibaba is one of the companies that they go to to spend this money. This is why Alibaba is my first pick.

  • My second pick is Apple (AAPL). Apple had some "news" come out in December which affected the stock. The first "news" article was that Apple admitted to slowing down older iPhone models to save battery life and prevent premature shutdown - but if you purchase a new battery you would not be affected. Consumers were outraged by this and there are even lawsuits against Apple on this now - but the stock price didn't really move on this piece of news. The real mover was the "news" article that came out on Apple slashing their forecast on iPhone X sales. The source claims they will cut it by more than 30% of originally expected. The issue here is that this is all speculation, and the sources is unknown - which makes it much less credible. It was also downgraded by a smaller firm and all of this negative news led to some selling. I feel this is similar to the price action we saw before the iPhone X came out, which was clearly manipulation, and you could have profited well if you didn't buy into the rumours. This is a golden 2nd chance to take advantage of the exact same situation. I know I will be adding calls and shares to my position in January in anticipation for the earnings run up at the end of Jan or early Feb.

  • My third and final pick is PayPal (PYPL). Another company that will benefit greatly from the strong shopping month we just had. Many online businesses use PayPal as a form of payment, and PayPal benefits from each and every one of these transactions. And with online sales up something like 20-30% year over year, this is a lot of revenue and profit that PayPal will see in their next ER. They also partnered with the investing app Acorn this month, to allow customers of both platforms to transfer money easier, and withdraw and contribute money as well. Overall is a good partnership that will help PayPal reach younger and less finance-savvy investors.

So these were my 3 picks for January 2018. There were others that I wanted to also pick (Nvidia and Applied Materials come to mind) but I felt the 3 that I covered provided the most upside going into 2018. So what stocks are YOU watching/buying in Jan 2018? Share below and Happy Investing!

Does all net income that doesn’t get paid out as a dividend add to a company’s equity?

I used to think that 100% of a company’s net income would either get paid out as dividends or add to a company’s retained earnings but I’ve realized that, in a lot of cases, some of a company’s net income just seems to disappear. Where does this additional net income go?

Would paying off debt with the proceeds of net income be an explanation for this? If a company chose to pay off some of their long term debt with their net income, that wouldn’t necessarily add to the company’s equity, correct? Or am I just misreading this -- would 100% of a company's net income that isn't paid out as dividends, in fact, add to their retained earnings?

Their mining facility should be up and running in 2018 with a public mining pool update coming in the next two weeks. Current price at .0014 makes it a high risk gamble, PPS doesn’t get that low by accident. But since the public switch to crypto a huge volume change took place which could send it into the .01 range when real proof is shown. Why The Bull Market Has Only Begun

Are you worried that stock market valuation has gone? Too far ahead of economic and business fundamentals? Or you are thinking too much about that the great bull market is long past its sell-by date? You must know that we are actually in a structural expansion of economic activity, profits, and employment. That probably has many more years to run according to the economists.

What are some good stocks to short if you think a bear market is approaching ?

Yes, I'm aware that shorting requires timing the market (and I'm not literally going to sell short, I'm going to buy puts).

Bonus question I: why shouldn't I short AAPL for fall '18 ? I think they've hit their limit of great innovations and even if they're healthy now, they have nowhere to go but level or down. But what about their mountain of cash ? How does that affect their valuation ?

Bonus Question II: On the bullish side, what do you think the chances are of Sears being acquired by another (perhaps South American River) company ?

book recommendations on technical analysis

Hi everyone. So I just found out about technical analysis recently and I am really interested in learning more about the behavioral economics aspect of the stock market. To elaborate more so, I want to learn about the psychology behind people's decisions which, in turn, influences them buying/selling the stock. I feel like if I can learn more about it through educating myself I will be better apt to predict mass behavior and have a leverage in my decision to buy/sell. . Please, if their is any scientific related book on people' who trade stocks, or any other general book which could help inform me and educate me, I would love to know. Scientia est potentia.

How Much You Can Earn From Day Trading

Intraday trading is buying and selling of stocks in one single day. Hence, the intraday trading involves frequent market fluctuation, which is not that easy to understand by novice traders. However, if you are trading under the guidance of some knowledgeable person or technical analyst. Who can generate best intraday tips, then you may get the profit. On the other hand, if you are capable of implementing technical indicators then you can generate free intraday tips.

Getting started in day trading is not like experimenting with investing. Every would-be investor with a few hundred dollars can buy some stock in a company. Investors believe in keeping it for years. However, you must know that the pattern day traders in the equities market must maintain a minimum of $25,000 balance in their accounts. And will be denied access to the markets if the balance drops below that level. You can say that day traders must have enough capital on top of that to really make a profit.

And because day trading is more than a full-time job, it is not compatible with keeping a day job. It would be not wrong to imply that the day trader must live off his profits from trading. As well as risk his own capital every day to make those profits. In addition to the minimum balance required. Prospective day traders must consider the cost of equipment such as computer hardware and fast internet access. You can also get a big dent in profits through brokerage commissions and taxes.

Trying to become a millionaire through independent day trading is something. Like trying to become a successful actor or a professional athlete. The study proves that a very few people will accomplish success and high-level of earnings. While others will not be able to sustain a long-term career in it. To be a successful day trader, you need to have accurate intraday trading tips.

If it is a good idea to invest in different companies of the same industry at the same time. For example, should I buy stocks in Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Puma, etc all at the same time?

$TEUM I believe this is a good buy... and here's why!

This might be the next stock to run a lot. It is evaluated at $5/share making the current price/share very undervalued. They recently payed off all of their debt which is a very good sign. Despite having a pretty big drop early on Friday, it recovered throughout the day and is showing very good bullish signs! I will attach some pictures below that might help you see what I'm seeing.

All the good news it has had recently: http://ift.tt/2zma0t0

The chart for Friday w/ quick evaluation: http://ift.tt/2BG9vQC

Important info about TEUM: http://ift.tt/2zm9TO6

Please make sure to do your own due diligence before getting into any position, don't take the word of some stranger on the internet. Also, to be transparent, as I'm sure many of you have already guessed I am indeed holding a long position, 1k shares at $1.23 avg. I wish you all luck in this final trading week of 2017, let's all get some good profits to close out the year strong!

Happy Holidays!

Investing In The Stock Market: How To Get Started

In the world we live in today there is no shortage of access to investment information. This in itself however, can be an enormous problem. Asking questions about how to invest, where to invest, and what to look for, can bring you many answers from lots of different sources. The trouble is diving through all the clutter to find relevant information to suit your needs.

So when looking to invest in the stock market, where should you start?

In the world we live in today there is no shortage of access to investment information. This in itself however, can be an enormous problem. Asking questions about how to invest, where to invest, and what to look for, can bring you many answers from lots of different sources. The trouble is diving through all the clutter to find relevant information to suit your needs.

So when looking to invest in the stock market, where should you start?

First things first, invest in what you know. If you are trying to evaluate a company, make sure you know how it works. The great Warren Buffett has often been criticized for not investing in technology during the dot-com boom. His answer was simple. If you don't know the business model, what the company does on a day to day basis, or how it generates revenue now, and in the future, then stay away from it. It is because of this that he has earned billions of dollars year after year for himself and his investors.

Once you know the types of companies to look for, you'll need ideas. Message boards, newsletters, financial news shows, and stock screeners are all good places to find ideas. Stock screeners are especially useful, because in addition to finding ideas, you can narrow the search down as you go to fit your qualifications.

So you've found some companies worth looking into, what next?

  1. Insider trading -- This is anyone who is considered to have an inside knowledge of the company, and also has money invested in company stock. This could be someone who owns 10% or more of the company, a director, CEO, CFO, etc. Watching when the insiders buy and sell stock, and at the prices they do it, can be very useful in predicting a stocks future. You don't want to buy a large stake in Company X when all the people running it are getting out. Therefore it's always a good idea to watch what the "smart money" is doing.

  2. P/E ratio -- The price to earnings ratio can also be a useful tool in evaluating a company. The P/E ratio will tell you if the company is relatively undervalued, or overvalued. A company that is undervalued should have a P/E ratio that is lower than other stocks in their sector. This is a great value to plug into a stock screener to find profitable companies.

Note: P/E can be manipulated (think Enron). Also P/E ratios vary wildly depending on the sector you are looking in. Technology stocks could have an average P/E ratio of 60, while oil companies could have an average P/E ratio of 10. Whenever I evaluate a stock, I don't look at the P/E against all other companies, but I look at it against their competitors in the same sector.

  1. Technical analysis and charts -- This is another tool that can help you see where a company has been, where the company stands now, and where it's headed in the future. It shows the company in a graphical form where you can see the stocks activity and volume over a period of time. You can find many tutorials on the internet about this, and you can even get a free DVD that shows you the basics from http://ift.tt/1Bz6iGt.

  2. Management team -- Some people just look at earnings, charts, and other technical ways of evaluating a company. This isn't always a bad thing but to really know about a company, you should know the management. You should know what other companies they have been involved with in the past, and how they did when they were there. You should also know where they plan to take the company you're evaluating, and in what length of time they have allocated to get there. It's a bit like evaluating a sports team. You wouldn't pick a championship team without looking at the coaching staff.

These are a few of the ways to help find companies to invest in. Like with anything though, due your homework, write out your goals, and when in doubt, ask for advice from someone who has already accomplished what you are trying to do. Knowledge is the key to being successful at just about anything.

What are your thoughts on TRXC? Should I bite the bullet?

I jumped in when the whole FDA approval was going on around October and has since plummeted about 50%. Do you think they still have potential for the coming years or was the pump and dump it?

Canopy Growth Corporation. Still a good time to invest?

Hi reddit,

I’m pretty new to investing and my interest in the stock market has grown from moderate to extreme the last 5-6 months. I’m thinking of investing in Canopy Growth Corporation (WEED:TSX). It’s had a great year in 2017 and the stock price is projected to grow more in 2018. However, I’ve been reading that it is overpriced and overvalued. What are your thoughts on the company and do you think it would be good to invest in?

Thanks!

What the hell should I do with this worthless crap? I've lost all of the 6k I put into it years ago. Usually when a stock is worthless, the brokerage will send me a stock certificate and wipe their hands of it. However, this one still sits in my portfolio as a 100% loss. Why? I can't seem to find any information on what this company is up to.

What do you accompany Bollinger Bands with?

I’ve heard a few different directions you can go, but pairing with stochastics (or stochastic RSI) seems to be generally reliable.

I’m new to TA so feel free to pick this strategy apart. Basically, I’m just trying to get a feel for when a trend might reverse or level out.

Is becoming a CFA a useful tool to expand investing power, and when does knowledge become a crutch?

  • The first line of each "paragraph" is the general bit of that paragraph. Most of this is just to make sure I cover the bases for people who don't know about CFAs, or my background.

  • A Chartered Financial Analyst can specialize in many topics I imagine, from management to stocks and bonds--don't we do that already with Robinhood?--or even general financial analysis--red= buy, green=sell. Some of this pokes fun at broad concepts, for sure these folks know a lot of these topics and to make light of their time would be a disservice to myself and others like me--who don't know much at all, about anything.

  • The Wikipedia page on their position is pretty neat, but it doesn't really provide much insight other than the general "here is what they do, here is how to be one."

  • I see a lot of YouTube financial advisors touting a lot of nice whiteboards with expensive markers, and they all glean enough information to let folks do "good enough" to run a profit. However, if we keep digging, it's pretty easy to say, "ok this amount of time I am personally investing is getting out of hand. I could be using this but I am only getting a slight return on my money made recycling cans."

  • I have a professional degree in a field that is very under appreciated, and not very well received apparently--paltry pay for arduous jobs--generally considered it is working out, but for a year now I've been seeking new career paths.
Financial research, specifically surrounding investment and asset management and the "how" we think about the green part of our blood really interests me.

So the title question:
Is becoming a CFA a useful tool to expand investing power?

And a second question:
For an individual who understands the general aspects of stocks/bonds, and a decent amount (ie a little more than what the intro class in undergrad gave us) of micro/macro economics can we generalize the amount of study needed to pass level I testing?

Say 4 hours a day, probably a month?

Parallels to the .com era euphoria: Remember when any company with website would soar?

I was having this talk in chat with a few people and hearing their though process reminded me so much of what we used to hear in 2000.

Now that Bitcoin is widely known and very expensive, a lot of latecomers are reaching the conclusion that they need to buy a "cheaper" crypto.

They end up looking at a variety of shitcoins that are complete garbage, but the thinking is "hey, its crypto! Crypto is hot!".

They are not wrong, but the same thing was happening in 2000 with .com's and did not end well.

Any company that announced they were building a website, adding .com to their name or selling some widget on the fledgling world wide web information super highway (no jokes, those were the buzz words!), would see a massive influx of buying.

If today, right now, this very day, I go and register a domain called fluffy-stockmarket-towels.com, would you buy any shares in my company?

Probably not.

Having a website does not mean shit, its just a page with some html, there is no real underlying value.

Fast foward to today, if I show you some whitepaper, ICO or fancy website explaining how SuperAmazingCoin is the next big thing, are you interested in buying?

At the moment, SuperAmazingCoin would actually get buyers for no other reason that "crypto is here to stay, its the future!", which is what Im being told.

Take the lesson from the past, the shitcoins will go to zero. If you really want in on crypto, wait for the big sell off, the point where nobody wants to touch it anymore, then look for the ones that survived. They will be the ones that succeed in the long run.

I think we all know trading is hard I've been at it for a year and a half focusing on short term, long only, low float, at the open trades. There are somethings I like about trading and other things I can't stand like the isolation. I don't know anyone else who does this line of business who also doesn't run some online subscription scam. If you've got a similar strategy to mine and would like to set up a correspondence or trade with me please send me a pm. I'm not looking for a student just an experienced trader that would like to grind with someone else. Trading is hard enough lets not make it any harder than it needs to be.

I exited thinking it would plummet as usual but instead it’s gained $2 over the last few days and is trading near 5 now! ouch And I can’t find any info on why, just the usual analyses that have zero info and zero news... but volume is up now from a quarter mil to 9 mil. I finally understand something about selling losing stocks for tax purposes

I made some pretty good money this year, against a backdrop of stocks I held on to for too long, which have been in deep negative territory for a while. If I don't do anything, I'll lose a significant part of my earnings to Federal taxes, and the current value of my stash will diminish even though I actually made money.

However, if I sell some of my loser stocks, I can negate my gains and owe no taxes on them, but the current value of my holdings will stay the same as it is now. The only thing I lose is the potential value of stocks. If my some miracle $CBIS goes from $0.049 to $4.90, I'll be very sad. But what are the chances of that happening? I bought it at $0.18, so it would have to increase by 260% just to break even.

I can sell 10,000 shares now and have $490, while taking $1,310 off of my earnings this year, saving me around $230 in Federal taxes.

So now I need to do some due diligence and find out which of my stocks have the least potential and sell them off at a loss before the end of the year.

Here's my pantheon of losers:

  • CBIS
  • HEMP
  • NVAX
  • ONVO
  • VJET
  • TVIAQ

Logistics of how a fund manager would buy and sell bonds.

Hi guys,

I’d just like to clarify some logistical queries. Does the process of buying/selling shares/bonds look like this;

1) Fund Manager wants to buy 1000 of share A and sell 1000 of share B.

2) This is done through a broker, who charges a fee for this service.

If so, I have a question. What exactly does the broker do? Please give me exact details on the software/people he has to utilise.

Thanks!

Review and Reasons - Why I Invest In TokenPay ICO - Over 1100 Bitcoins Invested So Far

See this picture first!

What is TokenPay? They are creating an anonymous cryptocurrency based bank. The new bank will allow users to easily make anonymous payments to retailers and for online transactions. They hope to combine the benefits of traditional banks with the benefits of the new blockchain revolution. The new card will allow users to spend Bitcoin and a variety of cryptocurrencies including their own TPAY token.

How Does it work? The new cryptocurrency will use a Dual-Key stealth address. These addresses allow the user to share their address publicly but any transaction that is sent to the address cannot be linked back to it. This means that the payment will be completely anonymous

The current crypto market Cryptocurrency has seen huge growth during 2017, Bitcoin is still the biggest cryptocurrency by far with a huge coin price of over $17,000. Many new users have been introduced to the world of crypto this year and want to use it to make payments.

However Bitcoin is facing some major issues, transactions have become slow and expensive, nearly all transactions are costing $10 in fees, making it impossible to make any sort of small purchase with it. Ethereum has also faced issues, the recent crypto kitties game showed that its blockchain still isnt able to successfully handle many transactions.

Why does TokenPay use the blockchain? The new blockchain that the project will be running on is from Bitcoin, this allows them to use all of the benefits that the blockchain has brought such as being safe and secure whilst adding their own beneficial features:

Extra security: The new blockchain will have additional security and anonymity features, many people believe Bitcoin to be anonymous, however this is far from the case. Tokenpay will be truly anonymous. Proof of stake: Many people now view proof of stake to be far superior to the proof of work that Bitcoin uses. Proof of work needs miners who use computing power to solve problems, however this system has shown to use huge amounts of electric and is quickly being shown to not be scalable. The proof of stake system that the platform uses means that users who hold the token will receive interest for holding on to them. This creates a more economical system which also provides benefits for holding the tokens which should then see the price increase.

Coin supply and Proof of Stake rewards The new project will only ever have a small coin supply which is limited to 25 million coins, this is different to fiat currencies that people have become used to where governments can just decide to print more money. Miners (those holding coins) will be rewarded with 5% yearly interest.

Use of the Tor network for maximum security The project will make use of the tor network which has become famous for anonymity, this combined with their multi signature addresses will ensure privacy for users.

Advantages Fast speed of transactions, making it much more practical to use. The only coin to be completely private and have an encrypted chat. Monero is currently the most private cryptocurrency, however Tpay also has the advantages of running on the tor network aswell and having a secure chat. Many other currencies are supposedly anonymous but they still have faults making them linkable. 5% staking interest per year giving token holders an incentive to hold their tokens. Becoming a licensed bank Ofcourse TokenPay already has many benefits simply as a cryptocurrency for P2P transactions. However theyre also aiming to become an international bank. They plan to either set up a bank or purchase a bank based in Vanuatu. Theyre already in talks with this bank which already has an agreement with Mastercard, this will allow them to offer many banking services from the start. They plan to offer traditional banking services with the bank based around the Hong Kong $ that is pegged to USD.

Multi Currency debit card The new card will be linked to the Tpay digital wallets, meaning that its easy to load and then make purchases without the need for retailers to sign up to anything new, as far as retailers are concerned youll be paying in fiat with your crypto based card. A users tokens such as TokenPay, Bitcoin or other popular cryptocurrencies will be available to spend at any store that accepts debit cards. The cards will also be able to use ATM machines for customers to withdraw cash. The card will cost users just $15 with no fees if its being used in the users home country.

Payment processing The project also aims to offer payment processing for merchants. Fees for merchants will be as low as 0.25% which is far lower than most payment processing providers. This will allow retailers to receive payments in either fiat or cryptocurrency.

History and Roadmap Q2 2016:Got a partnership with UKSTOCKTRADE. Did a presentation at MIT fintech conference. Q4 2016: Due to the rise in demand for blockchain based projects the founders began to focus on cryptocurrency. They then established their headquarters in the British Virgin Islands. Q1 2017: Recruited a development team to build a more secure, private and faster type of cryptocurrency. Proprietary integration of the tor network. Created the stealth messaging system. Q2 2017: Launched the multi sig transaction system. Released the new paper wallets. Q3 2017: Set up a deal to acquire an established bank. Added a new ring signature feature to the blockchain. Q4 2017: Released the whitepaper and began the Tpay token sale. Q1 2018: Completing the ICO. Adding Tpay to popular exchanges. New Apply iOS wallet released. Due diligence of the bank integration. Q2 2018: Tpay website launched for commercial customers. Acquisition or partnership of the new bank. Merchant services application. Q3 2018: The new debit card is sent out to customers.

Tokenpay ICO Details The token sale is set to run until the 17th of January with 14,250,000 tokens available and is split up into 4 different sections with bonuses available:

Until the 13th December: 100% bonus on purchases. December 14th- January 3rd: 50% bonus available. January 410: 25% bonus available. January 1117: 10% bonus available. Price: 1 Bitcoin=3000 Tpay + 50% Hardcap: 5000 Bitcoin. Tokens will be sent to investors within 30 days of the sale ending.

Conclusion Cryptocurrency has grown massively during 2017, however its still not being used for many real world transactions with the fees of most coins currently being too high. This new currency offers many benefits such as low fees and being anonymus. If it was to launch as just a currency then I think it would do very well. However its also launching as a bank which offers additional benefits. The team behind the project looks solid with some of them having a long history in the finance and banking world. It has been interesting seeing this happen all over again.

[Question] Using MA (moving average) for BTC-USD chart or any stock

Hi Forum,

I am sorry to ask this question as I understand it maybe frustrating and may frustrate some pros. I would like to understand how to use MAs. The chart in this article Chart .

So they use a 5 day and a 10 Day MA. Ok great, however the 5 and 10 are units and it really depends on what your units are, Hourly would be 5 hour MA and daily would be 5 day MA..... I think i get that, so to interpret a chart, how do you know which unit to choose. In the screenshot HERE Screenshot.

RIGHT: Hourly units from the 16th . Left: Daily units from the 16th.

In the right the 20 MA shows a support, in the left the 20 MA shows a resistance, so how does one know which unit to take / set the chart to since applying the same MA yields diff results

Don't forget to double up!

Just a friendly reminder. I see many mentions on this sub and other of people doubling down on a losing trade. What I don't see nearly as often is mention of people doubling up on winning trades.

The last couple months I have been more focused on getting the most out of my winners (taking larger positions, holding longer, and doubling up) and the results have been spectacular. When I am sure of a trade and the price starts to move as I predicted, I double it! Then raise my stop to the break even. If it moves my way again, triple it and move the stop up again!

As always, manage your risk and cut losses early. Yes, some of these have turned on me and wiped out small gains, but my big winners have more than made up for it. As they say, when it's raining gold, don't be afraid to reach for a larger bucket.

Hope this works for you all too! Best of luck, traders.

As of right now the advice I’ve been given is to not invest more than $500 on one company’s stock. So far I’ve invested $500 in Apple, Texas Instruments, and Walgreens. I also bought one share of Amazon. Any advice for what I should do with the rest? Thank you for the help!

5 Stocks to watch this week (Dec 18-22)

So this is a weekly series I do - I spend a bit of time looking through stocks I follow and compile a list of 5 stocks that I think will be good swing plays for the week (sometimes I hold it for longer than a week, but typically when I cover them I believe they are good entry points). My plays are based heavily on technical analysis, but also incorporate fundamentals to get a better understanding of the bigger picture of the stock/company.

So before I start, if you don't want to read this wall of text, I have the video posted here: https://youtu.be/bErwfb7Ec-k

So let's get into the list:

1 - Amazon: Pretty much been moving sideways for this past week and consolidating (which it really needed after the wild swings its been having both to the upside and downside). This past week it's been hovering around its 20 day MA and held it well, and on friday we saw a small spike - but HUGE volume come in. It's also looking as oversold on the stochastics, so IMO this is ready for another move up (as long as volume continues this week and there's good news on the tax reform front).

2 - Tencent: This is one of my favorite stocks this year, and I have a large position in it for the long term, but I also think it provides great opportunity for short term as well. It respects technicals well, and right now you can see it's hovering around the 20 day MA, but still holding its uptrend support. Volume has been huge the last few weeks in this stock, and I think this is a great longer term play, but the current level it's at right now provides a good entry point for it IMO.

3 - Alibaba: Suffered a huge selloff when tech sold off, and got his especially hard because of some bad news coming out of China (but this was overplayed IMO). It's currently holding its uptrend support well, and we had a very bullish candle on friday with volume picking up. It is hovering around its 100 day MA as well, going above and below it the last couple weeks, so this is acting as a critical indicator for the stock. As with Amazon, if we see volume pick up going into this week, I can see Alibaba moving higher and start filling some gaps it created.

4 - Apple: This is another huge tech giant who will benefit from the tax reform. It had a good move early in the week, and then moved sideways as we awaited news on the tax reform. On friday, we had huge volume come in, and we broke past a key resistance level on good volume and closed above it. Now going into next week, there's another resistance level it needs to pass, but if volume continues as it did on Friday, we will see this break it without problem and then make a run for new ATH. Chart overall looks bullish and as long as there's no surprises this week, Apple should have a good one.

5 - Autodesk: I don't want to go much into this on here, but I cover my reasoning in the video. I loaded up on this position in the last week and have a bunch of calls on it - I'm very bullish here!

Hope you guys enjoy this weekly post I try to do. If you enjoy it, take a few seconds and drop a like on the video to show some support. And as always, please share the stocks YOU are watching this week. There are literally thousands on the NYSE/NASDAQ and I can't possibly look at every single one, so if there's ones you think we should take a look at, post them below. Happy trading!

My investment plan: Does this sound too good to be true?

Currently a college student with about ~24k saved up. I have a decent amount of that in crypto currencies and don’t want to keep checking crypto prices everyday so I want to invest long term in safe stocks like ETFs.

The plan: Buy Robinhood Gold (essentially loaned money to invest with) from the Robinhood app, doubling my investing power to ~50k. The cost of Robinhood Gold would be $200/month. If I invest all that money into safe stocks like SPY, SPYG, SPYD, ITA, XLK, and other safe stocks, they average about ~3-4% gains each month.

Math: 50,000*.03 = 1500 (monthly gains) 1500 - 200 = 1300 (Monthly Robinhood Gold fee)

Net monthly gain: $1,300

This is a rough estimate assuming the stocks average a 4% monthly gain. Even a 1% gain nets me ~300 a month.

If I diversify my stocks with safe ETFs from different sectors and assuming the market is bullish, I think it would work.

So is this too good to be true?? Am I doing the math wrong? Is there anything I’m missing? Let me know what you guys think.

Tax Bill Priced In? What Would You Buy?

I don't want to do a debate on the tax bill, but short version is that I think it's short term great news for shareholders but that the outlook on broader economic growth ie employment/expansion/wages isn't going to change much.

Combine that with a recent run-up, particularly on some of the banks, and I want to think the tax bill is already pretty priced in (other than perhaps a short-lived enthusiasm bounce).

Do you think I'm wrong? If so what are you buying?

If the NN repeal holds up against repeal, are vpn companies a good investment?

Tbh I'm not entirely certain if using a vpn would get you around isp's that are throttling the net, but my cursory understanding tells me that's totally factual so I'm gonna run with it. Assuming net neutrality stays gone and isp's go evil, I think it's fair to assume a lot of people will start using vpn's to dodge the bullshit.

With those assumptions in place, what do you guys think about throwing some money behind companies that provide vpn services via a subscription-based business model? Obviously I have a lot more personal research to do before making any real decisions, but I think there's serious potential to make some money off this turn of events.

If a stock doesn’t pay dividends, then why do people buy it?

Assume we are talking about a company who re-invests profits for growth instead of paying dividends to shareholders.

If a stock price isn’t directly correlated to the companies profit, but supply and demand for the stock, then why do people buy the stock if it has good growth prospects but doesn’t pay dividends?

Noob questions

  1. Once a company has sold all its shares after its IPO, what is its involvement in the secondary market? Why do they pay dividends to shareholders if they have already got the capital they need and they don’t need to care about their share price?

  2. Or do they care about their share price, and why?

Is this a good idea? (Buying stock for stock game)

Today is the last day of the stock game at my school (I need to do well to save my grade)

The stock market opens in around 3.5 hours from when I am writing this post.

Earlier this week (yesterday), I invested in RIOT. I was impressed by how much money I accumulated in one day. I've already sold American Airlines stock (they aren't doing too well as a company as shown by the picture attached below) and will buy more RIOT stocks right once the stock market reopens with the money earned from selling the AAL stock.

Would you recommend basically selling all of the stocks I have right now which are doing poorly in their after hours and pour my money into RIOT? Or should I just keep my stocks the way they are?

I'm impressed by RIOT and think it will get me a lot of money in one day - especially if I invest more - but as I am not as experienced in stocks as some of you on this subreddit, I want to make sure I am not f*cking up. By just looking at RIOT in their after hours, I feel confident that it will be a good day if I invest a ton in their company. They have a strong upward trend and they make great games (I think I might've played one of their games in the past). I appreciate your feedback

Picture attachment of my stocks: http://ift.tt/2CqLzNL

Current amount of money I have in the game: $101,453.85 (USD)

Money I'd ideally like to make by the end of today (Friday): + 2 - 3k

One guy in my school made $15k in one day and went from rank 175 to rank 3 in one day so I'm not being too optimistic when I say this is how much I want to make.

I am ranked 155 right now. The number 1 guy has 118k in his account. Getting more than that would be a stretch but like I said getting 2-3k dollars would get me a B and not a C in the game.

EDIT: If needed, I can sell all my stocks and just devote all of my money on RIOT. Please recommend a good course of action

Looking for an intern in the marketing/finance field!

Hey guys, some of you know me but if not I'm a business owner, developer and a trader with ~15 years experience in the markets, and I'm interested in working with a younger, ambitious person (or maybe even a couple of them) who has extra free time and would like to build some experience for their resume.

Basically I need some help with some marketing stuff, growing a couple brands and products and generating content, but I need someone who is passionate about and hopefully has some knowledge of the financial markets. I am happy to provide all the details to anyone seriously interested but this is mostly just a feeler post. In my imagined scenario, your duties would essentially be working with me to grow my newest financial analysis application, but right now I'm just brainstorming so you'd have a lot of say in how it could be beneficial to both of us. I'm not in a position to hire someone full time for this or anything like that, but if you've got free time, are tech savvy, know a little something about the markets (and want to learn a lot more) and want to build up some experience in the marketing and/or finance fields I'd be interested in talking details with you.

The site is already profitable and I am happy to share profits as they grow to give you some incentive. We'd be working closely on building a strategy and in the end you'd end up with some good experience on your resume so if nothing else I'm hoping that I can help out an ambitious college kid or two!

Leaving this open ended so people can ask questions. You can also feel free to pm me if you prefer more private discussion about it. I'm an open book!

Thanks!
