What are your thoughts on computer share?

Hey guys, I have been doing a lot of research into investing lately and have posted a question here before and got great response. When do you see the next drop off coming?.

Anyway my next question: What are your thoughts on computer share? More specifically for Altria. Is it a better deal to use TD Ameritrade and take advantage of their commission free trade deal (for 60 days). Thing is I plan on doing that one purchase and letting it sit for a long time re-investing the dividends.

I'd love to get your guy's input on this. Thanks. For a point of reference my investment will be in the low x,xxx range, but feel free to comment on any amount to help others.

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 6/30/14!

Hey everyone! Fun week in the market with lots off opportunities to trade. I had a pretty good week overall but next week I am going to focus on staying aggressive throughout trades that really warrant it. I had several trades last week that should have been $500-600 gains that I only made a couple hundred bucks on because of scaling out too soon, cutting position sizes in half at break even and that type of thing. So, I will be focusing on that next week as long as the trades warrant it! Here are some things I'm watching:

  • RGSE long over $3.00

  • EGHT long over $8.00

  • KING long over $18 (recommend you do not trade this if you're new)

  • CNAT long over $8.30 or so

  • KPTI for continuation over $45

  • MNKD for day trades (long or short) over $11.10

  • AMKR short under $10.80 area

Chris

DISCLAIMER: I am a day/swing trader. LONG means I'm expecting price to go up, not that it's a long term trade. SHORT means I'm expecting price to go down, not that it's a short term trade. Just because I post these here does not necessarily mean I'm buying/shorting them. They are ONLY ideas, may not be traded at all, and if I do take them, 99% of the positions will be closed by the end of the day. One other thing...any swing recommendations should be taken w/ extreme caution - lock in some profits as I am not checking these to see if they have earnings or anything before posting, so if they do they could make crazy moves. Do your own DD on them. BEFORE you ask "what are your thoughts on [insert symbol here]?" here is my answer: Tell me what your thoughts are and I will tell you if I agree! It's impossible for me to give thoughts when I have no idea what your plan is. Other than that if ya have any questions, feel free to ask below and as always, share your ideas too. I just day traded GPRO for a 10% profit in 30 minutes. Its my first ever day trade, I was expecting it to take days/weeks to hit my sell threshold. Looks like the stock is going for an extreme ride just like the cameras.

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 6/27/14!

Hey y'all! I have some ideas for your Friday! It's been a fun week w/ OHRP from my list earlier this week going nutzo 3 times in one week...up 20% one day, down 30% the next, and up 40% today, lol. This is why I don't swing trade these types of stocks or if I do I always book profits on the first day. Also ISR went on a pretty sick run on a couple PRs that sent it from my $2.72 call to $3.25, and my IDRA swing from $3.12 is starting to heat up a bit. Anyway, despite the fact that there were a lot of nice charts out there last week, I've found that intraday there hasn't been much I wanted to risk a ton on. I was laying some pretty heavy size into RGSE today from $2.75 all the way up to the $2.90s but it never broke $3 so I never got to really put on the full position I wanted (8k shares) and had to take a small gain on it and admit defeat, lol. Tomorrow I will probably still be able to grab a couple thousand shares for a quick day trade but the opp to get in for a big profit is gone now, at least for me in terms of my risk tolerance. Anyway, Here are some ideas for tomorrow!

  • RGSE over $3.00 should spike pretty good, I would think at least $3.20 and probably $3.50 is in the cards.

  • LNG long over $69.50 looks strong

  • MEI for a continuation - it closed above weekly highs at $37.53 and was testing high $38s all day so I think through $37.75 it should push toward $39.

  • BWP looks good for a continuation (thanks /u/liggitystock)

  • PLUG over $4.75 could continue toward/through $5

I also have several alerts set and am watching stuff that is "in play" like OHRP, ICLD, IDRA, MNKD, LIVE, RALY, GPRO and a bunch of others. The ones listed above though, are my favorites. BTW, KPTI priced a secondary offering at $42.50/share which I kind of expected so it will probably break down tomorrow...sucks cause it was a really nice flag on the daily chart, but ... it was a turd anyway so I guess this is to be expected. Lol, will be watching because if it holds up the flag breakout will be very strong.

Hope everyone had a great week and makes some cash for your Friday!

When do you see the next drop off coming?

Hey guys, I have been doing a lot of reading and watching lately because I am looking to start investing into the stock market. At this point I have a couple companies picked that I am really interested in. At the moment it seems that a lot of companies are going up big time from the last year or so. I'm timid to invest now because I feel like they are just going to drop after having such large and consistent growth. Should I wait around to the next drop or is now the time?

Monsanto Company Wreaks Of Pesticide: Top Likely In

Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON) reported earnings this morning. The agriculture chemical maker beat on earnings but missed on revenues. Monsanto initially shot higher, Wall Street cheering the results and investors eager to buy. However, since the initial push higher, it has fallen substantially and is putting in the technical signal called a topping tail. A topping tail that occurs at the highs of a chart has a high probability of being a long term pivot to a bigger down move. The key here is to monitor Monsanto and at the close today, confirm it is a topping tail. If it is, look for substantial downside in the coming months.

Are monthly dividend stocks worth investing in?

Let's say you have $10,000. A stock which is around $10 per share offers anywhere from 10-13% returns, paid monthly via dividend checks (I.E. paying 0.10/month per $1 invested). There are quite a few like this out there. You would be making ~$1000 month, meaning the investment would pay for itself in less than a year, and even better if you were re-investing those dividends checks back into the stock (compounded). It SEEMS like this is a no-brainer. Are there any potential pitfalls / gotchas in doing this?

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 6/24/14!

Nice day in the market today w/ a sick move on my call last night on OHRP and also a nice move on VNDA. Those were my two biggest trades today pulling in almost 20% on OHRP (still holding half) and a pretty quick 300 bucks on VNDA. There are still a lot of hot setups out there so I am keeping my list to only the best:

  • WHX long over $2.03 for a big push

  • SNTA very similar setup to OHRP. Long over $4.50 should get it moving

  • MNKD long over $10.80, maybe $10.90 for a flag breakout

  • KPTI long for a flag break (careful, this one is thin as death and very risky)

  • ICLD long over $7.15-7.20 for a push toward $8

I will also be watching OHRP in pre market as they have a conference call to talk about phase II data which, like a-holes, they announced after hours. I am still holding half my swing so I'll be ready w/ my finger on the trigger in case it faceplants. VNDA could also continue over today's high in a red to green type move and the goal would be to break $16 and spike for a quick morning trade. Finally I like LIQD for a swing but it's not quite ready yet, and I am still holding LIVE (added a bit more today at $4.57) so I'm thinking that might take off soon. Hope everyone had a nice weekend and a good start to the week!

Question about possibility of making profit on the decreasing value of an item. Noob Question - conceptual discussion only.

This question is the result of a conversation a bunch of us had over the weekend.

The best explanation is a scenario: Let's pretend that you KNOW for a fact that gold is going to depreciate (??)... go down in price. For example, it sells for $1000/oz now, but you have insider secrets that tells you the price will be $500/oz in 6 mos. No question - it's a fact. Let's pretend your old buddy just found a huge pocket of gold and he's gonna flood the market. (just play along here....)

You - the financial genius that you are - know this and use this knowledge to buy other items that make you hyper rich as a direct result of gold going DOWN in value. Woot! go you!

Problem is: how does that actually work? I get that if you invested $1M into gold and you sold it before the price crashed that you actually SAVED money using your secret insight. But this is preserving money you already had.

But based on what some of us either heard directly and/or was inferred... it appears that something else is actually possible. To invest in the opposite item and see THAT price go up as a direct result of Gold's decreasing value.

For example: you know gold is going to plummet.... so you take your life's savings and you load up on silver. Gold drops and silver gains. Yay! You've made tons of money!

That's the crux of the confusion. It appears that some of us believe there is a way to directly earn profits (not just preserve value) in the market by buying the opposing item of Gold. And others feel that no- you just preserved value by avoiding the future-depreciating-item.

We are all at odds on this, and I thought I'd toss this NOOB question out for explanation.

Is it possible to make a profit on something else with the knowledge of something decreasing n value? If so, how is that actually done? In my basic example... why would silver go up because gold went down? Also - what is the 'opposite' of ore? Is it another ore item? or something wildly random - like pork bellies.

Or is there a general confusion about what is happening - and you are really PRESERVING your investment more than profiting? So you had 1M to start, and managed to keep your 1M while everyone around you lost 50% of their investments?

A bunch of noobs would really like to understand this concept better. Also; there may be a bet on the matter.

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 6/23/14!

Hi everyone!

Looks like a fun week in the market coming up. There are a lot of hot setups out there and the market is still pretty strong. Here are some ideas for next week:

  • OHRP over $9.80 should rip

  • ENDP for a long bounce/range break. Nice swing look

  • NPSP for a flag breakout

  • NOR for a swing over $3.60

  • DRL over $4.65 for another big push toward $6.50

  • AKRX for a red to green move through $30

  • EXTR over $4.24 for a push toward $4.70 then gap fill

  • HEAR for push toward recent highs at $11.50

Some of these might go right at the open so don't chase them. Wait for a good entry. Others might not be ready fro a few days. These are all just ideas that I think are setting up for BIG moves in the next week or so. Hope someone catches some of them and makes a little green for your 4th of July! :)

Moving Average Crossings are useless for timing, at least in this case

I just spent $1000 for a tout that uses moving average crossings to time weekly option trading. It's not working so well!

So I thought I'd check it out.

Here's a test for SPY using daily closes for ~10 years (2517 days), 50 & 20 day moving averages, and looking at the price change 5 days after the crossing.

Bull Crossings Up = 20 , Bull Crossings Down = 6 , Fraction Correct = 0.7692

Bear Crossings Up = 15 , Bear Crossings Down = 10 , Fraction Correct = 0.4

Overall Fraction Correct = 0.5882, Fraction Up = 0.6863

Bet of $1 traded on crossovers becomes $1.45

Bet of $1 traded on Buy & Hold becomes $2.1043

So it was an overall Bull market. What would it have looked like if I just randomly picked 5 day intervals

Here are 5 runs:

Random date Up = 32 , Random date Down = 19 , Fraction Up = 0.6275

Random date Up = 30 , Random date Down = 21 , Fraction Up = 0.5882

Random date Up = 33 , Random date Down = 18 , Fraction Up = 0.6471

Random date Up = 32 , Random date Down = 19 , Fraction Up = 0.6275

Random date Up = 26 , Random date Down = 25 , Fraction Up = 0.5098

At the very least, we can say that this commonly used method does NOT improve trading results!

Okay skeptics of my skepticism - What is wrong with this test?

I should have run it on a different equity, commodity, forex, etc.?

I should have used different moving average lengths?

I should have added some additional selection criterion?

By what criteria would you make those decisions?

  • Apple - to buy. Lots of iwatch and iPhone 6 hype right now and will continue for a few months

  • Tesla - to buy if it ever gets back down to $200/share

  • HP - probably to buy. Very solid growth so far this year.

  • Oracle - probably to buy. Low right now after missing their earnings estimates but a very solid company.

  • Micron - probably to buy. Key earning report on Monday and have been doing very well recently.

  • Amazon - to watch. Hopefully the price drops a bit more though.

  • Microsoft - to watch. Window 9 and surface mini release maybe later this year. Also releasing an android Nokia phone.

  • HEMP - penny stock to watch. They're at a low right now but were up 400% this year.

But, I also need to do a lot of chart based backtesting (ie, info and signals that can be generated by price and time series data) for other strategies soon... and I really hate to reinvent wheels when it comes to programming, so instead of coding it up (which would take months to get something even basic ready to use) I'm looking to explore some software packages that already do a good job of it.

So yeah, if anyone has done a lot of backtesting and strategy building on eSignal, AmiBroker, or MultiCharts, I'm interested in hearing your impressions.

I have access to licenses of all three, and I'm about to dive into one but I'd like to narrow down which might be best to invest my time into.

Thoughts? Experiences? :D

Thanks!

Has anyone actually TESTED technical analysis?

It should be pretty easy.

Would it be a fair test to take a few decades of SPY closes and look for intersections of the MA20 and the MA50 and see where the price was 5 trading days later?

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good unambiguous test that would be easy to program up?

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 6/19!4!

Yooooooooo!

Sorry for the late post. I decided to go through and clean up my watch lists cause I had like a billion alerts and the same stocks on them multiple times and a bunch of old crap I was not even watching anymore, so I just spent a long time cleaning it all up and refocusing for tomorrow! I feel so fresh and so clean cleannnn now!

For tomorrow I'm watching the following:

  • TEVA long for continuation. I day traded it today from $52.47 and was going to swing it but it went parabolic through $53 so I just took it as a nice $150 gift lol

  • INSM long for continuation

  • IGT long over $16.05. DON'T GET SUCKERED on this one. It will hit $16.01 with big volume and suck you in just to plop back down. WAIT for the confirmation.

  • PLUG long for continuation. Also watch FCEL, BLDP and ZBB as they usually run w/ PLUG

  • IFON just perking up out of a long beatdown. Looks good if it can hold this level tomorrow.

I am also now stalking DPW and CDTI for swing entry.

Finally, I currently have 56 alerts set on various stuff for over the next few weeks/months. Here are my favorites from that group. None of these are ready yet but they are worth setting alerts at the designated points because they will likely be in play again if they reach there. The starred ones are ones I think will be the most powerful:

CNAT over $9.00 *

CRUS over $24

FRX over $100

GILD under $78.50

IGC over $2.00

ISR over $2.80 *

KKD under $15.87

KPTI over $45 *

LNG over $69.40

MACK over $8.00 *

MNGA over $1.75

PRAN over $2.20

RDNT over $7.50 *

RIGL over $4.10

SARA over $2.00

SUMR over $3.21 *

VNDA over $15.00 *

VSTM over $10.50 *

Hope everyone's enjoying their week!

Chris

OCZTQ - Up more than 100% today

This company used to make SSD and other computer equipment until they went bankrupt last year. They were bought out by Toshiba and their symbol changed from OCZ to OCZTQ, becoming a liquidating company. They are up over 100% today. I am not thinking about buying at all I would just like to understand if this company is still active.

Do they still operate and sell their products? Will this symbol eventually disappear? What exactly is a liquidating company, and what happens usually to these?

Does this not dilute the price of current shares? Is this completed to add more visibility into the company, or are there some indirect implications involved?

Fed Tapers Another $10 Billion, Slashes Growth Expectations, Says Policy "Remains Appropriate"

http://ift.tt/1pgthBF

With modest positive growth adjustments expected, a continued taper (of $10bn), and no "rate-hikes-are-imminent" warnings, the FOMC statement provides more dovish confidence...

  • FED REPEATS LOW RATE LIKELY FOR CONSIDERABLE TIME AFTER QE ENDS

  • FED SAYS HIGHLY ACCOMMODATIVE POLICY `REMAINS APPROPRIATE'

  • FED TAPERS BOND BUYING TO $35 BLN MONTHLY PACE FROM $45 BLN

But...

  • FED: 2014 GDP GROWTH OF 2.1%-2.3% VS 2.8%-3.0% IN MARCH

So everything's fine, taper is on... but we are slashing growth this year dramatically.

Netflix, Inc.: Large Pull Back Coming

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) is fast approaching its 52 week highs at $458. This is what traders refer to as a major double top. A major double top is established when a stock puts in 52 week high and then tumbles over 25%. Netlifx, Inc. tumbled 35% before the recent rebound. Essentially, this means that there are a lot of bagholders that bought at the highs and have been wishing and hoping it comes back to that level so they can sell for a break-even. As Netflix inches closer to the $458 level, these sellers will begin to dump. This will likely cause a retrace back down to the tune of 38.2%, a Fibonacci level. This retrace would take the Netflix, Inc. back to $400.00 and be a great profit opportunity as a short from current levels.

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 6/18/14!

Hey y'all!

Nice day in the markets today with little turd stocks running everywhere like REDF, SPEX, IGC, VDSI, KNDI, etc. We had some great movers from my list last night on SYNA, KNDI, VDSI and a bunch more! I sold part of my VDSI swing from $11.49 at $12.60 today, and also day traded VDSI from $12.42 -> $12.60, $12.80 and $12.98.

I have a few ideas for tomorrow but nothing I want to really jump on right out of the gate...just some stuff that looks like it could be ready soon:

  • GILD short under $79.50 for bear flag breakdown

  • ACMP short under $62.00 for continuation

  • ECYT short on news of Merck dropping support for their cancer drug - it got crushed after hours

  • QTWW long for red to green move

  • SPEX long over $2.10, maybe for a swing trade

  • ARTX long over $5.15 for flag breakout

  • ACFN long over $2.70 for flag breakout

Hope everyone's havin a good week!

Stocks for tomorrow!

Hey all! Here are some ideas for tomorrow. I think all of these look ready to rip! You'll have to excuse my laziness on posting the prices but I just spent 2 hours scanning and closed my stuff and can't remember any of the prices except DYAX and CNAT lol

  • DYAX over $8.63

  • LNG for this flag breakout

  • SYNA for flag breakout

  • CNAT over $8.60 for rip to $9+

  • DHRM for a swing entry ... but be careful as they have earnings soon and I have not been able to find a confirmed date.

Also KLIC, REDF, VDSI and WPRT are super nice. I grabbed some VDSI for a swing at $11.49 the other day and I am watching it over $12.40 now to add more and/or day trade it!

Y'all watching anything for tomorrow?

Thanks!

Transaction costs of futures e-mini scalping?

I have been trading Forex for quite some time now, so I am well-versed and understand the risks, methodology, and mindset of trading.

After hundreds of hours of chart time, I've learned how to judge order flow to predict the movement of currencies within the next several ticks with a high degree of accuracy. I have one of the cheapest Forex brokers around, but my methodology cannot overcome the transaction costs the majority of the time. So even though I am "right" as to where price went in the next 100 ticks, I am usually just sitting at a break-even trade or a very tiny profit.

So I am looking at other instruments where my skills might actually be able to turn me a profit. I understand that in trading e-mini futures contracts on the S&P 500, one tick is equal to $.25 USD.

What's the typical transaction cost in ticks that I would have as a retail trader on the ES (spread + commissions) per contract? Can anyone suggest a reliable broker? Thanks in advance.

Keurig Green Mountain Inc Loses Some Green Today

This morning, leading specialty coffeemaker Keurig Green Mountain Inc (NASDAQ:GMCR) is declining lower by $8.06 to $114.01 a share. The stock is now testing its daily chart 20-day moving average. Today's decline in Keurig Green Mountain Inc stock is taking place on heavier than average volume, this tells us that the stock is susceptible to further intra-day declines. Day traders should watch for solid intra-day support around the $111.20 area. This is prior pivot support level from May 29, 2014. Often, prior pivot support levels will serve as solid support when retested.

Looking for books on how markets work

Looking for books that might cover:

1) An overview of the relationship commodities, indices, currency exchanges, etc, have on one another.

2) Theories on how and why prices move. An inspiration was reading "Markets in Profile" by James Dalton. I'm interested in more on Market Profile and Volume Profile. I've also heard some talk of game theory explaining decision making. Could you point me in a direction there?

3) What are the nuts and bolts of making it all work? Something that explains everything from order books to the business of running an exchange.

What will INTC do?

OK so INTC (Intel) hit 52 week high today. When I look at the chart, I see quite a bit of accumulation. Today INTC closes at $28.17, the 10 year high is like $29.27ish! One could argue we have been in this accumulation phase for 5-10 years depending how you look at it. What is your opinion on it breaking through $30 and breaking out? Quite a bit of positive news lately, which makes me concerned, however intel is a solid company, and the chart certainly looks good and primed for a big volume breakout. And if it does, how long does it go on? Holding my call contracts, for now.

Potential Bottom In Place: Walter Energy, Inc.

Walter Energy, Inc. (NYSE:WLT) has been hammered non-stop in 2014. The constant stream of negative news hit a peak in the last few days with word of new regulations for coal plants. Many are calling these new regulations the death of coal. Often times stocks put in bottoms on major negative news and this looks to be no different. Walter Energy, Inc. is bouncing nicely today and showing signs of life. This stock is very possibly turning the corner for a move higher of up to 25-35% in the coming weeks. Walter Energy, Inc. is a buy as long as it does not take out the 52 week low on the chart at $4.25 on a daily closing basis.

Why did REZ drop in 2008?

I'd like to invest in an ETF that collects residential rents.

REZ seems to qualify, but I don't understand why it dropped like a rock in the crash of 2008.

If I owned rental property then, even if I had a mortgage, I would have been relatively unaffected. No? If anything, all the people who lost their homes would be flooding the rental market.

So, what was(is) REZ doing that made it so vulnerable?

Extended hours trading

Anybody have any suggestions for a site that reports a stocks 4pm-8pm value changes? Also are there any drawbacks to extended hours trading? All I know is putting in a buy order for the next day is risky because of opening price variance but is there anything that is less apparent with stocks trading after-hours?

SPY going ex-dividend

Just a lil' question about ex-dividend dates and options. I'm holding a June put contract that is out-of-the-money (thanks 9-day straight bull market) that expires the day after SPY goes ex-dividend. I'd like to unload it beforehand to save theta but if need be might hold on and capitalize on what should be a 93 cent drop. What I'm confused about is how and when this 93 cent increase/drop is added to the price. As we head towards the 20th will SPY artificially inflate to meet the demands of the dividend? Right now it's about 55 cents off from the SPX.

SolarCity Corp Runs Out of Energy

This morning, leading solar energy stock SolarCity Corporation (NASDAQ:SCTY) is trading lower by $1.97 to $49.30 a share. This stock continues to come under some institutional distribution. SolarCity Corporation stock topped out on February 26, 2014 at $88.35 a share. It is easy to see how this stock continues to be plagued by sellers in the near term. Investors and swing traders should now watch for daily chart support around the $43.70 level. This is an area where the stock was defended and bought by the institutional money. Often, old pivot points will serve as major support when retested. Traders should expect the stock to be weak until that support level is reached.

Thoughts on PSEC?

Paying a hefty 1.1% dividend monthly, not too much shift in price over its history. Looks like a safe dividend play, but is there room for growth? Thoughts?
