My dad and I are starting a course to learn about the stock market. Please, some advice and a question!

We are joining a kind of investment group after taking a few courses. So far, it seems that they track about 3-5 companies and buy long term options. They claim a person can get very wealthy this way in a relatively short amount of time (about 2-3 years). The founder is someone who's been doing this exact type of thing for about 30 years now and is VERY successful and he takes a very hands on role with your training and making sure you understand why he's watching the companies he is.

Basically my question is, what's the risk/reward of buying the options low and how does all that work? I've heard mixed tales. A lot of his students claim they have turned huge profits using his guidance and his practices. I've heard others (non-students) say options are a waste of time/money. Whats your opinion/experience with these types of transactions?

Thanks Reddit
