Investing in companies unscathed by Great Recession

Past performance doesnt blah blah blah. But past performance does in fact influence investment behavior right? I'm interested in investing in stocks that are relatively recession proof, so would it be a good idea to invest in companies which had positive returns from 07 to 09 (or at minimum didn't take a huge hit).

The way I see it, investors will look to the past to see which companies did well during rough times (probably staples, defense, etc). So all the money will shift into those stocks around now. Rates increases looming, end of the bull in so many eyes, sideways 6 months, dreaded september, etc.

Thoughts?
