Best way to purchase stocks and shares. Are online websites legit and offer the same service as would an official broker or bank?

Apologies, I'm sure this has been asked a million times but I'm a real novice looking to invest some of my money. Websites such as fortrade and online stock markets, would you find the same companies/commodities as you would anywhere else?
