An economist and investor known to have predicted several crashes in the past. I've seen him floating around lately so I've decided to look for any opinions on the situation. I don't know much about the stock market, but I'm genuinely curious what people think about this case.
I just recently started investing into the stock market and I am VERY new to it. So far I am seeing a decent return which is nice. Anyways, I was reading some business articles that were mentioning the "Economic Collapse 2015". This piqued my interest in the matter and I began investigating.
I am very skeptical of what web articles have to say because I feel they exaggerate the idea of the collapse to raise interest in the article. I wanted to reach out to a trusted source, fellow redditors! Any opinions you guys have or any advice to safeguard my investments would be greatly appreciated.

Nice couple days in the market as we continue to bounce strongly off all bottoms. Despite the choppy nature of the S&P there are still opportunities as long as we trade the right names (which is tricky to do!) I continue to see lots of opportunities in well-known companies with catalysts (both long and short) like TWTR, GILD, NFLX, GOOGL and the like. I took a small swing today at $111.04 on NFLX as it has pulled back after its earnings breakout and filled most of the gap, and now has shown its first sign of followup strength. I plan to just hold for a few days and will consider the action of the market also since NFLX will likely be affected by SPY weakness as well as strength. Tomorrow I'll be watching VLTC and REN for continuation of their moves upwards today. I also really like the look of ETSY. It had a strong uptrend today and seems to be trying to confirm its hold above the 200dma. It also has a positive catalyst after Google said in its Q2 earnings report that its updated search algorithms were directing more search traffic to sites like ETSY. I continue to look for opportunities like this where we have a liquid stock with a positive catalyst and a nice technical pattern as the combination (especially when the market is in bounce mode) seems to yield some good results. Finally, I'm also still watching ASPS and will keep LNKD and EXPE on the list as they both had strong volume after hours on earnings (LNKD down, EXPE up). I expect them both to be in play tomorrow.

The past 6 months I've been working intensively with very large data sets - parsing, calculating, and building algorithms via C#. This past week my interests sparked in the markets so I did some research on how I could pull stock data and do some data manipulation. I've found the best solution to get market data seems to be pulling directly from Yahoo Finance's Stock Market API (http://ift.tt/1EuIdSk). I've also been reading up on articles and watching some videos on the topic of algorithm trading. However I do have some questions.

Town Sports has experienced some recent turmoil in the stock market due to earnings misses and CEO stepping down. They have a different model than most large fitness membership companies by associating the name of their club with geography (New York Sports Club, Boston, DC and Philly) 63ish% of their fitness centers are in NY.
This guy looks like he has a lot of high-powered backing after his recent success with the turn around of Red Robbin and BJs.

I would like to buy calls when my system requires me to and not be concerned about it being the wrong time due to high IV and inflated premiums. (note: I can't write naked options).
So I was trying to figure out a way to hedge volatility (this all pertains to options on stocks, btw). The only thing I could think of is selling short VIX. But doesn't seem like the best solution because volatility could be high on one stock and rock bottom on another.
Any other better methods? Also, if shorting VIX is a viable method, how exactly would i go about equally hedging my long call?

I'm baaaaack! Sorry for the long delay in posting. I was in the process of moving so I was trading mostly sporadically from my laptop as I didn't have internet access for a while during the move and then once I did I was waiting for my new Evodesk to get here so I decided not to set up my main station so I didn't have to move all my stuff twice. Anyway now everything's back to normal so I'll be doing nightly or at least semi-nightly posts with watchlists and updates! Here are some pics of my new pad and my new desk! This place and the desk are both really sweet ... If you're looking for a sit/stand desk I highly recommend the Evodesk (so far). Build quality is fantastic, operation is super quiet and smooth and for the price (under $1k shipped) it's a better value than the Geekdesk or anything from The Human Solution. I did a lot of research and decided on this one mostly because there was such close competition and I liked the fact that Evodesk uses all recycled materials and also their advertising/site design was very sleek which I expected would reflect in their product, and I was right.
Ok anyway so I've been trading sporadically like I said, and have been focusing on bigger, more liquid stocks like GOOGL, NFLX, even AAPL as I've found a lack of action and follow through in the small cap/low volume world the last couple weeks. The only small cap/momentum stocks that I'm personally finding a lot of success in are the hyper-momo stocks like NYMX, ITEK, VLTC and those types...and only on the first day of their move. After that first day nobody seems to trust them anymore so I've been staying away. Join the trend on the first day and then leave it alone. That's been my strategy recently and it seems to be working. The market is still rangebound as it has been the whole year so we need to stay vigilant in taking profits quickly and staying agile. The environment IMO is not really conducive to swing trading since everything just goes sideways but also the range makes it unpredictable for day trading due to all the gaps and potential for uncertainty surrounding China and Greece, so I've found it best to stick with REAL companies that have REAL catalysts and REAL buyers. For tomorrow I'm gonna be watching TWTR and GILD both on earnings. I suspect TWTR will be a range bound play so I will treat it as a scalp play only. They actually beat earnings expectations but they must have said something bad on the conference call because after the initial move it got pretty flushy and held the downward move. GILD on the other hand is a well established company that has solid net income and topped estimates, so I suspect we'll get some continuation tomorrow. The earnings weren't a blowout or anything like that so I'm not super biased right out of the gate but I will see if it develops a trend and then join if it makes sense. I did run some scans and found some potential runners but these will all be back burner ideas: GENE long, OHRP long, ANAC long, MU, AXN, DEPO, NPTN and GDOT all long. These will all require strength from the market to back them up so after the big bounce today I'll be a bit skeptical of anything without a very recent catalyst since the market may be in consolidation mode.
Lastly, I want everyone to take a look at this spreadsheet I've started and consider what I'm doing. I've used the 50ema as a guide for over a year now thanks to some things I learned from Michele aka @offshorehunters but I had never really run the numbers on it. To determine the feasibility of building an actual strategy around this I'm tracking results for any stocks that are near or slightly above the 5 minute 50ema at 10:30am, and watching to see if they bounce. I'm not trying to push the system, but showing you how I normally do strategy development when testing new theories. If you're serious about trading I recommend you do this with your favorite setups/theories as well. Track the win rate over several months and if it's high enough you can start using the strategy. Pay attention to whether it is working organically or being dragged along by the market or other factors as that will be important once the market character changes as it always does.

WUBA. It's dipping right now but looks as though it may turn around. I'm of the opinion that China has few good markets, but e-commerce is one of them. What is your guys' take on WUBA?
I have been researching index funds and would like a little clarification on my understanding. I want to invest in two index funds (HACK) and (SKYY), both of which are related to cloud computing, cyber security, "the internet of things," etc. A particular holding of SKYY is Cisco, or Apple.
Question: When I invest in the Index Fund, does my investment go solely to the segment/branch of the business doing cloud computing or does my investment go to Cisco or Apple's finance division and the stock holding of my index position does only as well as the overall business's stock value?
So I was just wondering how the following worked, although I assume that is solved through something fundamental;
If you exercise an option, say 6 months after holding it. Do you have to hold the shares for 12 months after exercising or only 6 since they were a part of that option contract to avoid short-term capital gains taxes?

Just look at it, a user posts his trading strategy and how he likes to play the stock market and all you guys do is bombard him in downvotes and tell him to invest in a mutual fund instead. Is that a joke? Just because you invest your money in a mutual fund or ETF and have absolutely no trading strategy what so ever does not mean you need to downplay his strategy and call him stupid for managing money differently.
Every other post on here is some news article from some big shot website that is designed to make money on over sensationalized titles and articles. This place is an absolute joke to be completely honest.

I want your opinions on what you all think will be a stock that is up and coming that I could be equivalent to what happened to Apple.
Everybody is too afraid to post their market-beating methods (excluding the badbaseball, of course). I'm not. I hope for as much criticism as possible. Besides exposing the flaws in my methods, I hope you will also share the details (beyond generalities) of your own. PM me if you would rather.
I'm doing all this with $100k, plus my broker's non-portfolio margin (IB)
Section 1: FUTURES
Here I attempt to create positions in stocks, bonds and real estate that are perfectly equal in relation to their average movement per month (Volatility), as opposed to simply being equal in market value.
On the open of the first trading day of the month, I will buy the following:
STOCKS (1/3 futures portfolio) 1. IXV Healthcare (1 contract - $75k) 2. XAP Staples (1 contract - $75k)
Market value total for equity futures = $125k
BONDS (1/3 futures portfolio) 1. ZF 5-year T Notes (2 contracts - $240k)
Market value total for Treasuries futures = $240k
Real Estate (1/3 futures portfolio)
Market value total for REIT - $115K
As mentioned above, my position is based on volatility. 5-year notes move about half as much as healthcare stocks, hence the higher allocation to bonds. And REIT is the most volatile one out of the futures listed, therefore a lower allocation.
Total futures market value = $480,000
I have data showing the average high point for each of these futures. I place a limit sell order at these points for each contract.
Once the average high target point is reached, I will not sell short bonds or real estate, but I will equities. If the health and staples both reach their average high point, I will sell short ES (S&P 500)
Section 2: STOCKS
Now to individual stocks. I only work with every stock from the Nasdaq 100 and the NYSE 100. I also add about 20 that I'm bullish on.
First, it should be noted that I have only $200k to purchase stocks ($100k plus my broker leverage)
On the 31st, at night, I go about making OPG (on the open) order for each of my 220 stocks.
I sell short the 110 that did the best in the previous month, and I'm long the 100 that did worst.
Since I have $200k for stocks, that allows me to buy $950 of each stock.
METHOD
I have monthly moving average data going back a good length of time. This info shows me the average low point, high point, and end point, for each security, in a given month.
Long Positions. With my 110 long positions, I will set the limit at the average high point. If my position is 10 shares, I will double the sale order to 20 shares, so that once it reaches this high point it will immediately reverse and sell short.
Short Positions. I will do exactly the same. Set the limit at the average low point. Double the shares so that it reverses when it reaches the low point.
Step 3: FUTURES PART 2
There is a definite pattern in the market whereby once a broad equity index (NQ, ES, YM) reach their approximate average low point, they will reverse and climb to point zero and hit a wall. Point zero being the price of the contract on the first trading day of the month.
Once NQ, ES, or YM reaches their average lows, I will buy. My sell limit will be set at point zero mentioned above. So many times, once this point is reached, the index will retreat, enabling me to rebuy, at which point I will let it ride, selling at the average high point (if it ever gets there). But I'll setting for it's average monthly end point, which is somewhere around +1% above point zero.
I will not hold all 3 of these. If I'm holding YM, and ES is bought, I will sell YM. If I'm holding ES and NQ is bought, I will sell ES.
I intermittently mess around with FTSE100. Lately I've been weary of it, to say the obvious, but in good times, mean reversal works just as well with it as it does with other indexes. And though highly correlated with US equity indexes, it isn't completely, so it does offer a bit of diversity.
Section 4: single stock OPTIONS
I use options to hedge my stock positions against movements on earnings announcements. I want nothing to do with that lottery.
I will research movement of the last 4 earnings days for a stock approaching earnings. The I will buy an OTM put if I'm long, and vise-versa. If the average movement on earnings is 4%, my strike price will be 4% below current ATM
It's my contention that if the price of the underlying is lower than it was when the month began PLUS lower than the broad index, then the odds are earnings day will cause the stock to plummet. I don't play that game though since it's just a hypothesis.
CONCLUSION
I want you guys to rip into me. Tell me why this method is problematic, be as cruel as possible, but PLEASE give good, clear, detailed reasons what I should be doing, and EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Also, please don't be afraid to share as much as possible about your method, as I did here. I post this not because I'm struggling (it's been a great success in the past 6 months months of sideways markets, never making less than 5k/month), but because there are a few smart people here whose opinions I value who can elevate my method.

p.s. For those who will write about me being over leveraged (which I welcome). Notice with stocks I'm equally long and short. And with my futures I have three uncorrelated assets (OK, they're pretty correlated - seems like everything is these days). So take that into account please.
pps. As for a my strategy to deal with a rapid hard market tanking, I have a limit order for a SPY put that would protect my entire portfolio. It kicks in with excessive downward acceleration.
So I just started getting into investing a bit last year. I'm trying to stick to growth stocks and don't necessarily plan to sell any shares for years (or even decades). Right now, I'm in Apple, Chipotle, Under Armour, Centene, Activision Blizzard and Etsy. I feel good about the long-term prospects for all of them except Esty... I really have no idea where it's heading and the stock has been all over the place since I bought it in the high $19s a couple months back. The articles I've read about it tend to contradict each other. What do you all think?

Hey y'all...just doing a quick post since I haven't posted in a while...I'm in the middle of moving and won't have internet access til Friday so I've been trading sporadically on public wifi but have mostly been focusing on getting furniture arranged, changing addresses on accounts and all the annoying shit that goes with moving, lol. Of the stuff I have been trading I'm finding that REAL companies with REAL catalysts (i.e. GOOGL, NFLX, ANAC etc) are the ones that are working. The momo stuff like VLTC, GENE, CBLI and that small cap garbage is working but you gotta be really fast and agile to trade it well which is definitely not me when I'm on my laptop and trading on freakin public wifi, lol. So that said I've been buying dips in trending big names like GOOGL and NFLX when they have a good catalyst and that seems to be working pretty well. Also I just bought an Evodesk which will be sweet once it gets here in a few days! Check them out at www.evodesk.com if you haven't...they're pretty nice and for under 1000 bucks shipped IMO was one of the better deals on sit/stand desks.

ConocoPhillips is currently trading at $56.54, almost at their 52 week low, with a 5.24% dividend rate which they just increased 1.4%. Their Average Target Price is sitting at $72.62, representing a 25% difference between their current asking price.

China is the largest threat to the global economy, their economy is headed for a financial crisis as a result of all their overspending, obscene levels off debt i.e. margin, & most importantly high leverage.

So I an a 17 year old who is looking to start investing in the stock market. is anyone using this service? my IB has some studies that come from eSignal, I wanted to check them out because the study seemed to be pretty useful, but when I tried getting a free trial, it turns out to be a "30-Day Risk Free Trial" and that is a scammy way of getting your money.
So I called them up to get the free trial, but in return was told I need to pay $55 for one month of service, and then a recurring $175 every month, even though the advertised price is $145, but apparantely they charge extra $30 for some BS transaction fee or something.
So I mean, is it worth it? Because so far I get a feeling like they are just scam artists, what is the point of obscuring the price, I just don't get it, and how am I supposed to pay for some service I don't even know is useful..

Hello, I am relatively new to investing, and have decided to go in with real money soon only after doing pretty well with some virtual sims (Investopedia etc). My question is, what platform should I be using? I have heard Vanguard is very good, but I would like to hear more options. With the virtual sim on Investopedia for example, I had a 30$ commission for each trade, which was literally 3% of my total starting money. Here are some of my plans: *I am 16 and am willing to go long term, but that being said I am currently not reliant on money and would also like to take some risks and learn early. *I have approx. $3,000 saved up.

Netflix is splitting its stock seven ways.
In a statement Tuesday, the company announced that its board has approved the split. The stock dividend will be payable on July 14 to shareholders as at July 2, according to the statement.

Thus, PayPal will be an independent, publicly-traded company listed on the NASDAQ Stock Market under the ticker symbol “PYPL” upon the completion of the separation on July 20. As the board formally approved the split, shareholders will receive one share of PayPal for each share of eBay. Why is it going up despite a deal that will allow more oil to enter the market?
Will the small bounce up from the Chinese stock market crash only last 3 days? Will it make sense for it to last a week or two more? Is the crash over at just 30% down?

Hope everyone had a great weekend and is ready to get back to work for another week of trading! I didn't trade much at all last week since things were so volatile and I expect this week will be much the same. People were expecting/hoping for a resolution on the Greece situation this weekend but again the talks fell apart, with the Eurozone now asking that Greece make some concrete changes by next week if they want help. Basically it seems like the ECB, IMF and Germany do not trust Greece to actually make the changes they've promised to, nor do they expect the people of Greece to follow them, so they're asking them to sign new changes into law before any bailout can be done. Of course all this means for the rest of us is more uncertainty and more volatility. Likely the market gaps down tomorrow but anything can happen after that point. Also many traders are still on edge regarding China so we'll have to see if next week brings anything new with that situation. I did find a lot of nice charts mostly in the biotech sector but I suspect a lot of the setups will be busted by the gap tomorrow so I'm not putting too much time into making plans for them. I like HCA over $93.00 if it can develop a trend as it was very strong into the close on Friday. Any dips can be bought on it as long as the market is cooperating with us (which it may not). FOLD has a gorgeous daily and a big breakout over $14.65 which I will be watching as well as RTRX and DYAX which have similar looks. Something a bit more volatile that could ignore the market is FBIO so if all the others are busted by an ugly gap or a weak market I will see if FBIO can get some legs. On the short side EXEL and ANTH could get some morning buying pressure but then fade if the market is weak since neither's daily is very strong and both have pretty hefty resistance right above where they closed on Friday. Outside the bio/healthcare sector I found GPK for a possible red to green move through $14.50 though it's pretty extended on the 15 min chart so it needs to pull back and set up first...I'll be stalking that for a possible bounce off the 50ema around 10:30am. Lastly GPK has a nice daily breakdown area around $33.50 if the market is weak, so any morning pops could potentially be shorted in anticipation of that level breaking. All in all we're still in a very unpredictable market so we need to stay agile and be quick on taking profits as well as quick on the trigger when we see opportunities since they don't last long and even a tiny amount of hesitation can cost you big money right now.

HUGE trade from my watchlist the other day. I didn't hold it myself but damn...6.90s today from call around $5.00 oye vey! nice job to anyone who had larger testicles than I.

The S and P 500 is currently holding it's 200 dma near 2056. Market is a bit oversold. If we hold yesterdays lows near 2044 a bounce is likely to about 2080.
I've been trying to figure out the best way to do this, and I don't really think I'll be able to answer the question until I start seeing what happens.
My guess, though, is that after the split everyone will want to dump ebay and hold on to paypal. Once paypal becomes available people will want to buy it up, so the price will shoot up, probably very high for the first few days. It will continue with an upward trend but still very volatile. I can't decide if ebay is worth holding on to or not after it splits, or if I should wait for paypal to spike and take my profits then, or hold it for years to come.
Any thoughts on this?

Relatively easy day as I just took two trades (small loss on TVIX in the morning, then flipped to long XIV and rode the wave up a bit). Sometimes you just need to admit you're wrong and go the other way. No problem at all as long as you cut your losses quick and let your winners run! I stayed away from individual stocks as there wasn't much that I could trust since the market was a bit indecisive, but there was a nice trade available in NBG in the morning and a couple others like FIT and some china names but overall I think it was best to just sit on your hands and let the market decide which direction it wants to go. We have another ECB meeting tomorrow to decide if they will open the door for more negotiation on debt for Greece, so there is a lot of uncertainty remaining in the market. My list is pretty much the same and will stay that way until there is a resolution in Greece. For tomorrow I did make a note that LXRX looks pretty nice for a continuation higher. It's trading about $1.24 pre-split right now (was a 1:7 reverse) and effectively broke over the previous $1.20 resistance so I think it has room to run to $9.30-9.50 ($1.30-1.40ish pre-split) and if it gets over that $10.50 may be in the cards (i.e. $1.50 pre-split). Will be watching that for a weak open and r/g if the market stays strong. Other than that I still have TCPI and CLNE on watch as well as ACRX and OCLS for longs. The only one I REALLY like is CLNE, followed maybe by LXRX and TCPI but TCPI only if it gets volume.
Aside from those things I'll just be watching XIV and VXX and playing market volatility until we get some news on Greece!

Just wanted to give you an update to three stocks out of our watchlist that we will be watching today.
PFE Looking to the downside as PFE continues its downward trendline break. Yesterday saw a test of the 21 EMA with a failure to close above it signaling further downward movement. We are going to be looking for a pull back up towards the 21 EMA and then will be selling calls on the nearest expiration weekly (4 days) with a hope to collect some quick theta.
OXY After closing for two days below its recent trendily break, we're going to be watching OXY for continued weakness today. We had been preparing for it to rise up, but its starting to move downward now. For our trade we'll be looking for a move up to the 21 EMA and then selling calls. Vol for OXY is decent at the moment and we are able to get away from the ATM by a few strike for some cushion room.
TSLA Continued upward climb. Whats intersting is that Short as a % of Float is sitting at 26%. So if it can push higher a bit, short positions will have to be covered, driving the stock to new highs. Basic Fib extension gives us an initial price target of 320. Vol is pretty low at this point, but for the risk of the Greek contagion, we have not yet decided whether we will buy calls or sell puts.
