Is the Biotech sector rolling over and going back up?

IBB and Biotech funds seem to have ended their correction (see a floor somewhat established) and picking round 5-10% last month. Also new record highs for the S&P, helped by healthcare and basic materials was made recently. If you look at the yearly charts for IBB and other, you can easily see that biotech did go out of hand at the start of the year and got corrected , but is still in line with the upwards trending line. So is biotech and healthcare taking a turn?

If anyone is interested in watching, I am doing a live interview about how I became a profitable active trader w/ the guy who taught me most of what I know, and it's free to register. We're gonna chat about some of the struggles I went through when I was first learning to trade, my background/experiences, how my trading strategy has changed over time and things I've learned, etc. Since I always get a lot of questions about my strategy both in my "stocks I'm watching tomorrow" posts here in /r/stockmarket and via PMs I thought y'all might find this useful and wanna come by and watch!

Here's the link to register! http://ift.tt/U1C0Oy

Is the current low volatility and low volume a calm before a sell off?

I'm actually pretty bullish on the economy long term, but I feel like it is at levels too high for current circumstances. The high p/e and tapering of gov. interventions is not too good. I see the Dow dropping to 1600, and at most dropping to 1540 in the next few weeks. Nasdaq kind of had its sell off last month so I don't see it dropping too hard either.

Do the Bearish to Bullish rating on Fidelity or the Sell/Buy/Neutral/underperform/overperform ratings hold any weight with anyone?

I feel like the Buy vs. Sell scale seems to be a more real-time sort of rating while the Bearish vs. Bullish scale seems to be a more lagging sort of scale. For example if something has a Bullish or Very Bullish rating you have probably missed your chance to get in at a reasonable position. I'm not sure how others feel about these scales or if there is another type of indicative scale I'm not aware of.

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 5/29/14!

Hey hey guys/girls!

Nice day in the markets with runners all over in the small cap/spec world. The market remains resilient despite these ridiculous highs so I'm cautious on any longs but still trading what I see and not trying to predict anything. I had some nice trades today in LIVE from $4.53 to $5.25, VTNR from $9.30 to $9.75 and VVUS from $5.02 to $5.23, and the inevitable small losses in a couple stocks like FORM from $7.38->$7.19 and DARA from $2.11 to $1.99 (stupid chase that was actually a sick trade and I just blew it by chasing the entry!) Anyway, good day overall; as long as you finish green then you're doing what you need to do. Tomorrow I am watching a couple overextended name for shorts and some of these cheapies for momentum moves. Here's a list:

  • ACAT short under $37.10

  • MNGA long over highs for a continuation move

  • LIVE long over $5.34 highs today and $5.32 resistance on the daily. I suspect it pushes toward $6 in the next day or so.

  • DRL long over $2.80. It has a similar look to MNGA, PLUG, BLDP, ISR, etc which are all starting to take off.

  • KND long over $24.82 for a flag breakout

I'm also starting to stalk BIOF again. I have an alert at $5.90 and think it might get moving over 6 bucks. Some others I just have on passive watch are RPTP over $9.00, CNAT over $6.20, AVNR for (hopefully) a 1-2 day dip and then a move over $5.20, RDNT for a flag breakout over $6.80ish, CBB over $3.90, and PPHM over $1.94. These stocks are all setting up for big moves IMO but need a little more time.

Hope everyone's having a nice week so far! Let me know if y'all are watching anything.

Chris

DISCLAIMER: I am a day/swing trader. LONG means I'm expecting price to go up, not that it's a long term trade. SHORT means I'm expecting price to go down, not that it's a short term trade. Just because I post these here does not necessarily mean I'm buying/shorting them. They are ONLY ideas, may not be traded at all, and if I do take them, 99% of the positions will be closed by the end of the day. One other thing...any swing recommendations should be taken w/ extreme caution - lock in some profits as I am not checking these to see if they have earnings or anything before posting, so if they do they could make crazy moves. Do your own DD on them. BEFORE you ask "what are your thoughts on [insert symbol here]?" here is my answer: Tell me what your thoughts are and I will tell you if I agree! It's impossible for me to give thoughts when I have no idea what your plan is. Other than that if ya have any questions, feel free to ask below and as always, share your ideas too. Another volatility play - SPEX (+96.7%)

Today, Spherix doubled on news of the U.S. Senate removing a patent reform bill from the committee's calendar. It gained another 10% after hours.

The price action brought a volume of over 44,000,000 - the daily average is just short of 700,000. The 52wk range is 1.19 - 27.86.

I have trouble believing this can keep it's traction, and I have a feeling it's a short play (Day trade). Some pretty sketchy numbers surrounding this stock. What does everyone else think?

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow, 5/27/14!

Hey y'all!

Great week in the market with lots of volatility and little biotechs starting to come back to life. The volume fizzled at the end of the week due to the holiday which made Friday a bit more difficult for day trading but overall it was a good week. I had a lot of fun doing my first full week of my new one on one mentoring service with my students as I got to work with a different student each day and trade live on Skype all day with them. Great way to share ideas and learn more on both sides of the connection and one of my students actually made a really badass call on LIVE and made us like 15% in half an hour!! As far as the market I am starting to see a lot of smaller momo stocks come back to life as I think the "tech bounce" thing is starting to get a little old now, so I've been watching things like LIVE, ISR, IGC, VDSI, YOD, etc. All these hot little momo crazy buggers that ran a couple months ago are starting to perk up again. That's what I'm focusing on for the next week or so, but also watching intraday movers and news plays as always! Here is a list of stuff I'm paying attention to for tomorrow and the first couple days next week:

  • ICLD long for a flag breakout. I took a small starter position in this on Friday for a swing at $5.10, and day traded it from $4.70 to $5.00 or so to add a little cushion. I think this thing rips next week.

  • LIVE long for a continuation if it gaps to near $5. It will probably get a quick push through the round number but you gotta be agile with this one. It's a tricky sucker but can make you some big ass gains if you play it right!

  • MNTA long over $12.32 for a range breakout/bottom bounce play

  • CYTK long over $4.94 for a range break/bottom bounce play

  • WMGI long over $30.50 for a range breakout

  • ISR, YOD, VDSI long for continuation plays/day trades

I'm also still stalking RDNT (over $6.40), ZU (over $37.38) and AVNR (over $5.00) long. I think these have more upside in the coming weeks but need a few more days to get ready. BTW while all my picks are long, I am also watching anything that has run hard this past week for shorts because the market is pretty much pegged at the high and I think it could roll over this week so shorts can be profitable too. Only reason I am watching all these longs is that they are the types of stocks that generally do not pay any attention to what the market does. Just be ready to play both sides!

Hope everyone has a great week.

This stock has been down trending for about 3 months. Friday it popped and almost doubled with 24,000,000vol (daily average is 1.1m) on news of an ATM offering.

DDD Chart, and a question about my analysis of things.

OK, so looking at DDD. Volume was over 40mil shares exchanged on 2/5/14 in the price range of $57-65/share. This was on a major gap-down day, and it certainly looks like the "smart money" was buying into the selling. It really stands out on the chart, i mean the average volume (90 day) is 3.5mil. Turned into a nice green candle on huge volume for the day, after a huge gap down. Here is chart, I circled what i am talking about. Surely those who can invest trillions/billions aren't going to lose money, this must be the MM's you think? They have since let the price trickle down, however my logic says it will soon go higher than those levels. Thoughts?

RSI and old price data

Say I have a 5 day 15 minute chart with an RSI setting of 10. If I am looking at a chart from January would the RSI compare the relative strength to the last 10 days in May or the previous 10 in January? Are technical indicators always measuring against the most recent data irrespective of where you are in the chart history?

I find the further I go back the less indicative it is and can't figure out why.

A programmer learning options trading

I'm a computer programmer and I've had my head stuck in the sand when it comes to investing: I've done virtually no investing whatsoever and I've had my savings under my proverbial mattress. I figured it's time to grow up, and I was hoping my programming knowledge could assist my investment strategy, possibly giving me an edge via trading automation (not even sure if this is possible, though.)

I'm interested in options trading because they seemingly have a possibility for a high payout. Anyone have suggestions on good reads to help me get started? Bonus points for suggestions that suggest algorithms / digital trading strategies! Thanks in advance, and please excuse my incorrect vocabulary, I'm new to this realm :)

Is anyone else a bit suspicious of the amount and severity of the see-sawing in the major indexes lately?

You expect to see swings, but the past three months have literally been +2%, then -2%, often twice in one week! The indexes are all right where they started the year. Part of me wonders if the movers and shakers aren't buying and selling correctly ahead of all of these, effectively devaluing the little guy's investments. Volatility creates more opportunities to make more money, faster. Of course some people will win when that happens, but I'm getting very suspicious that the elite cabal is actually manipulating the markets up and down, selling, then creating fear, then buying, and then driving greed. Trading doesn't create real wealth, so every time we go through that cycle, that money they win comes in the form of smaller returns for the people who just sock their money in a mutual fund and leave it there.

Where can I find information on how exposed companies are to certain markets?

Hey Everyone,

I'd be curious to know if there was a table or website where I could see where companies get their revenue from -- mostly to figure out A. how exposed they are to certain geopolitical events and B. how reliant they are on domestic vs global markets.

I suppose I could go company by company, but I'd be curious to manipulate large data sets to also show, for example, how reliant the S&P vs Russell 2000 is on domestic or international markets.

As a related aside, I'm thinking that the recent slide of the Russell, doesn't necessarily mean that investors are moving away from small caps, just that the Russell has a large weighting of domestic exposure while investors are moving internationally.

Thanks!

Market Daily: Reader Input Wanted

I have extensive experience performing quantitative analysis using artificial neural networks.

My idea is to design a semi-automated daily stock market report letter that you can access through the site's fluid design--I feel that if I'm performing the analysis anyway that I might as well share.

I have several questions about this and would love your input about any ideas you would like to see implemented.

Meanwhile I have a few questions:

  1. What legal hoops do I need to jump through, i.e. how do I ensure that I am not held liable if someone claims they loose money based on the quants' analysis?

  2. If I could give you the maximum amount of information I can within 10 seconds, what would you like to see? How would you like it presented?

  3. What sections should I implement? For example, should I have a front page for overall market, a page for blue chips, and a page for penny stocks?

Thanks for your input. I will post a link to the site once I've implemented a reasonable number of features.

I can't believe how much money some of those guys make on Twitch!

Recent news of Google looking at Twitch.

I was reading an article of how some guy who was working retail simply starting playing games and streaming, he now does it full time, pulling in $4000 per month.

Amazing!

AstraZeneca rejects Pfizer's 'final' bid

The board of AstraZeneca has rejected the improved $119 billion takeover offer from U.S. drugmaker Pfizer, a decision that has led to sharp slide in the U.K. company's share price as investors think it effectively brings an end to the protracted and increasingly bitter takeover saga.

In a statement Monday, AstraZeneca's board said it "reiterates its confidence in AstraZeneca's ability to deliver on its prospects as an independent, science led business." - NPR

Im good with this, I have naked put position here so this upside move gives me some good wiggle room.

Stocks I'm watching tomorrow - 5/19/14!

Hey hey everyone! Thought I'd do a quick update on the stocks I'm looking at tomorrow and give y'all my thoughts on the market! So we did hit some new highs over $190 which was pretty cool but it just got sold off on heavy volume so I still think the market is a bit fragile here at these levels. Friday's close was pretty strong though, so I think we will still just channel for a while in this $185-190 area. That's cool though - there is some nice volatility intraday and things are always moving so I can't complain, as a day trader at least! I've also found that buying breakouts and shorting weakness has not worked nearly as well the last couple months as it has in the past, so I've changed up a bit to buying dips and shorting pops. That seems to be working a lot better so keep that in mind if you're trading. Often the breakouts are failing and it is easy to just wait for the stock to break out, fail, and then buy the dip! This has always been a strategy of mine but I had put it on hold for 2013 because you could pretty much throw a dart while upside down, dizzy and blindfolded and something would go up, lol. Also I am moving away a bit from trading small stocks and trading some higher priced stocks which seem to move a bit better and have better liquidity/more predictability in these conditions. The HDYs, BIOFs and DRLs are still ripping but they require a lot more volume in order to form nice patterns, I've found.

For tomorrow I'm watching:

  • JWN for a long continuation over Friday's high. Probably a red to green type move

  • JE for a gap down and bounce after a huge move downward the last couple days

  • QUIK for a gap up and potential short fader

  • AVNR for a breakout over $5.20

  • MXWL for a range break over $16

Hope y'all are doing well! I haven't been posting much cause I've actually been doing some 1 on 1 trading with people live via Skype during the day and doing a lot of classes at night and that's been really fun. Shoot me a PM if you're interested in doing that and maybe we can trade together!

Alrighty...over and out! Let me know if y'all see anything hot for tomorrow/this week!

Chris

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Limited Needs Some Medicine

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Limited (NYSE:RDY) is a leading drug manufacturer based in India. The stock has decline sharply over the past three trading sessions losing nearly $5.00 in that time. Yesterday, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Limited reported earnings that were not well received by investors and this is the primary reason for the weakness in the stock price. Traders and investors should now watch for daily and weekly chart support around the $38.70 level. This is an area on the chart that was a former basing pattern before a breakout in 2013. Often, stocks will return to their former breakout levels before being defended and staging a bounce.

Have a question and want to gauge interest...

Ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning. I hope everyone is well. I have an idea I'm trying to put together but I want to make sure there is interest amongst the community. I am in the process of putting together a very similar platform to reddit that's investment related. In the platform, people will submit ideas, others will display their own, opinions, research, etc. 3 days after the post, voting will begin on the stock. The top 50 names (with some discretion as I will ultimately manage the fund) will go into a portfolio which I am looking to create a public traded ETF for. There will also be a portfolio section on the page, where you can vote real time on what you think the weighting of the portfolio should be. If the weighting reaches a certain threshhold (<.25%), I will sell the name from the portfolio. There will also be the equivalent of reddit gold, chitcoin (named after the investment world slang "chit" for when a portfolio manager/ analyst pays the sell-side for value add), which you can award to users you feel make valuable comments, contributions. Everyone will start with 5-10 chitcoins and then each additional one will cost $1 (with a percentage going to cover my overhead seeing as I will be most likely dropping several hundred thousand to create the ETF and such, probably 40-50% and the other half going to charity).

I am calling the idea Open Source Investing. 75% of mutual fund managers can't beat the market... why? I suspect that maybe they close themselves to outside opinions and only communicate with those in the investment world. I think as a collective, we can educate each other, become better investors, and put together a portfolio that can compete with other investment firms. If successful, the effects could be revolutionary to the investment business.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts and would be interested in participating in this. I think we'd need to have at least 200-300 active users to start and I think the number could reach the thousands after launch (we would create the portfolio for a couple of months before launching). I'd love some feedback and I hope you guys are excited about the project as much as I am. Have a great day!

Would like to know different opinions about buying stocks when you think they are a deal, but bearish on the market in general

I am personally very bearish on the stock market overall right now. I do however think that there are companies out there that are a good value . My question is, if I think there is going to be a moderate or even massive pulled back / correction in the market in the next year to year and a half. what do you think about buying into the companies now that I think are trading fairly cheap? wanting to know your thoughts.

Why not hold leveraged ETFs long?

I can't help but see IWM (small caps index) as a buying opportunity. I understand it could go down much further but that is okay because at some point it will come back up to previous highs for a 10%ish gain on my investment.

I'm interested in 3x leveraged ETF ticker: TNA but keep reading how it is real risky to hold these for longer than a day or so. I understand, sort of, that TNA doesn't directly track the small cap index but I don't really get why that would keep someone from holding them long term (until small caps recover).

xpost from r/investing, Eager 16 year old

Hi, I'm wandering if there are any institutions that deal with investing/trading in or our around Atlanta. I have long had an interest in trading and the stock market and recently have started diving deep into it, keeping up with the news, monitoring r/business, r/stockmarket, and r/investing. I am also study up on terms and meanings through Investopedia. I am also using their stock market simulator to get my feet wet. But I want to take it one step further. Maybe an internship, unpaid or paid, with a company that deals with this kind of stuff. A mentor even. My parents don't really have any knowledge about stocks, and there is no way they will let me open up a junior account through Etrade or any other online brokers. So any suggestions? Any of you that work in this industry around Atlanta and would be willing to take in a student per say. This is just a field I have a lot of interest in and a job I could see myself doing, but I need to learn more than just reading books and playing simulators. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, I'm just a high school kid that up until now had no idea what I was going to do with life and I think I might have an answer. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated! Also, do any of the Wall Street firms take in any high school students? My family and I moved to Atlanta from Queens, New York, and if there was any way of getting a internship up there, I could very well stay with the tons of family we have in the Queens to try to attend it.

Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) Will Drop 20% In The Next Six Months

Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) has gone from $7.70 to its recent 52 week high of $14.00 in less than one year. This run was on the back of hopes for a stronger global economy. That dream is fading and with it the stock price of Alcoa Inc is set to drop sharply. If you look at everything about the global recovery, you come back with question marks. Where is it? China is slowing, Europe is in shambles, economic sanctions are on Russia and the United States just reported GDP at 0.1% for the first quarter of 2014. As if that was not enough to put a major overvaluation on Alcoa Inc, the Federal Reserve is pulling liquidity out of the system at a $10 billion monthly clip. The balance sheet of Alcoa Inc is also troublesome. They have almost $8 billion in debt and are barely turning a profit. Their whole future rests in the hands of the global economy and after a five year recovery that was mediocre at best, the next recession is not far away.

Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) is in trouble based on its current stock price. There is no reason why the stock should be trading where it is. Look for a 20% pull back in the coming months. A likely target would be $10.85 for Alcoa Inc.

Goldman Turns Less Bearish On Tesla Motors

source: http://ift.tt/1iwsTy6

Goldman Sachs (GS) analysts, perhaps Tesla (TSLA)’s most vocal bears, have turned slightly less bearish on the the upstart automaker after the company beat EPS and revenue forecasts after Wednesday’s close.

Citing the company’s continued revenue gains and improved margins — Tesla reported 1Q’14 revenue gains of $713 million, up 27% from a year ago, and non-GAAP gross margin that saw a 20 bps improvement sequentially — Goldman raised their FY2014 EPS target to $1.21 a share from $0.68, but also noted the following point:

[via MW] “We are still meaningfully below published consensus of $1.78 … we believe consensus will come down on increased [operating] expense guidance. Our price target remains $200.”

The Goldman research lists two key risks to Tesla’s near-term targets: the decline in North America Tesla Model S sales and the timing of its Gigafactory, the $5 billion lithium-ion battery plant that Elon Musk plans to begin building next year. Any delays on the factory, notes the research, are seen as a setback since the factory is extremely important to Tesla’s growth as an electric car maker.

Tesla shares closed down $22.76, or -11.30%, to end at $178.59 per share on Thursday. The stock following a strong run in 2013, is well off its $265 February high. Nevertheless, the name, which is one of the best performing names on the Nasdaq, is still up 18.72% since Jan. 1

Some picks for tomorrow!

Yo yo! Here are some things I'm watching for day trades tomorrow...I wrote some new scans and they came up with some pretty awesome stuff!

LONGS:

  • STRA

  • CR

  • PVA

  • YPF

  • WFT

SHORTS:

  • END

  • APPY

  • NLS

  • HOLX

  • RTRX

  • ROSG

Most of the shorts are probably hard to borrow so you'll have to call your broker in premarket to reserve shares but they look hot! There were a bunch of others on my scans but these were my favorites. We are starting to come out of the woods now on SPY it seems, as dips keep getting bought. The market is still indecisive a little bit but the bulls are hanging on. I think we go higher soon.

Hope everyone's killin' it this week!

Twitter Inc Tumbles But Is Near A Major Bottom

I shorted Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) $70.35 earlier this year. I did so because there was total euphoria, greed and every other adjective to describe investors buying without any worry in the world. It was an obvious top. Today, Twitter Inc is trading at $34.43 - 4.32 (-11.15%). Amazing drop from its highs. As panic sets in, I am starting to find the stock very attractive. The panic selling today is telling me it is getting close to a near term bottom. I stress 'close', as it still should go a little further to the downside. Ultimately, I am looking at the $32.75 area with a small possibility of buying more on a break of $30.00. This range is extremely high reward and could be seen this week. When investors and the media bash and spread fear, smart investors get very interested in buying a stock like Twitter Inc.

Is it just me or does anyone feel that's it's not quite acting as it should be? It's been acting less and less of what's typical over the last 2 years and its just gotten weird since March this year. Anybody wanna chime in with theories?

What's going on with Google?

Ever since the split, with a few exceptional days, both GOOG and GOOGL have been downtrending pretty consistently. GOOGL is down almost $75 in 2 months. What the hell is happening?? I have about $1000 each in GOOG and GOOGL. Should I cut my losses and get out since it'll keep falling, or should I just nut up and pray it rises again?

Day trading questions: Market Auction Theory / Option Stop Losses

Hi everybody,

I was hoping to get some more information on Market Auction Theory after reading this thread: Learning for help learning how to day trade. Could you provide me some info on it's pragmatic use, or point me towards a book or website that could provide more information?

Secondly, I wanted to reach out for some advice on setting stop-losses on option trades. I've been circumventing PTD restrictions by day-trading SPY options in a cash account. I contrary trade the price as it strikes Pivot Points, supports, and resistance levels (buying a 5 puts at resistance or a 5 calls at support.) About 75% of the time the trend reverses and I make money. However, I've been terrible at cutting losses and the few mistakes I've made have lost me more money than all of my accumulated gains. Much of this is due to breaking my 5 contract rule and doubling down when the market turns against me. Because derivatives follow their own price structure it's more difficult for me to know where to set stops without them being accidentally tripped. Do you have any advice?

Stock Advice

Hi, I'm new to the stock market. I know nothing about what I'm doing and frankly I'm not interested in learning about candlesticks and pie charts or whatever the fuck you guys jack off to. I just want to turn a little bit of money into more money. Pardon the preface but I'm just not that interested in hearing any warnings about how I can lose all my money or whatever, that's my girlfriends job not yours.

My question... if I buy, at random 1,000 shares of 25 different stocks under $5, how likely is it that one or more would go up in value enough to outweigh the others assuming they at minimum retain their value. I don't care if it takes 5 years. Also, is it common for cheap stocks to stay low forever?

Thanks.

My strong long term mutual fund 'timing' strategy.

Hey guys I thought I would share this because I know there's a bunch of long term investors here. I have a decent amount of experience with the stock market, but the truth of what I say will be self evident.

I mentally divide my money into 2 equal chunks. Chunk One is set to buy my favorite mutual fund(s) on a fairly big correction. Chunk Two is set to buy deep in a massive sell off. You can do more chunks and modify as you see fit.

These are long term holds and unless disaster truly is pending (in which case you should have puts!) then the market will always recover and you'll get a nice return.

Selling is a bit more tricky, basically sell really high. If I was still holding I would gladly sell now but I sold a long time ago (too long). We all need to contemplate exit strategy, but at least this buying strategy is very solid and low risk.

What happens to my Nokia stock after the Microsoft acquisition?

So I own some Nokia stocks (NOK1V at the Helsinki exchange). Nokia's mobile section is now acquired by Microsoft, but the rest of Nokia is still Nokia.

The question is: Is my stock now a Microsoft stock, or am I still a Nokia shareholder? Did Microsoft buy stocks from someone else than myself when Nokia's mobile division was acquired?

Understanding the Stock Market

Hello, I am looking to become informed about the stock market, and I know close to nothing about it. Would anyone recommend any books worth reading? I am not looking for neat tricks, or recipe books for the market. My background is in Physics and Math, so I would Ideally like to see some theory and variables. I know this may be a tall order, but I appreciate any help I can get.

Thank You,

NASDAQ:EROC – Eagle Rock Energy Partners - a quintessential "death-spiral" company!

In this edition Fat Pitch will be reviewing Eagle Rock Energy Partners- NASDAQ:EROC . A Master Limited Partnership that has an unsustainable business practice, unless management changes their financial policies soon.

Master Limited Partnership’s (MLP’s) in the energy sector have become increasingly popular with retail investors. Their main attraction is their perceived riskless investment that pays a yearly distribution of 6%. Now a truly riskless investment yielding 6% per annum is quite lucrative considering we are currently in a near zero interest rate environment. However, caveat emptor, many retail investors have no idea what they are getting themselves into!

The sales team pushing this product hide behind the shroud of the minor, yet true, benefits of MLP’s: the tax benefit of a limited partnership and the liquidity of a publicly traded equity. However, don’t be sidetracked when they call and tout these insignificant benefits! Be sure to do your research and check out the financials. Lastly, when the sales-rep starts chit-chatting about how you will spend your easily earned earnings on a family vacation in the Bahama’s, hang up the phone!

Just to clarify, it is not that Fat Pitch thinks all MLP’s are bad, it is just that most are! We see no point in explaining the background of the Eagle Rock Energy Partners – NASDAQ:EROC business since it is a horrible investment! Let us move on to the important part: the financials, focusing on a 3 year history of cash-flows statement.

http://ift.tt/1o82Td0

Right off the bat a keen investor will realize that the 2013 cash flows from operating activities (line B) is $300,000 less than depreciation (line A). In other words, the company is barely earning enough from their operations to replace what is consumed just to maintain the status quo of business operations. Also consider that Eagle Rock obtains positive cash flows from a depleting asset (oil & gas reserves) and their gas compressing and processing plants will need replacing every so often. Replacement costs have been reviewed and we agree that this yearly depreciation figure very accurate.

Next, lets look at lines C and D: sections from the cash flow from financing activities. Notice how unsustainable this investment is!? Line C shows 2013 dividend distributions equal to 70% of its yearly cash flows from operations. You read that right! 70% went straight to investors via the dividend! And to think that this company cannot even earn enough to pay for its own replacement cost. Our calculations reflect Eagle Rock having a yearly shortfall of $118 million.

So how to they stay in business!? Lets take a look at Line D. Thank goodness they have hard-nosed investment bankers to push new stock on the market to unsuspecting retail investors! And every time Eagle Rock Energy Partners – NASDAQ:EROC raises capital by selling equity, these investment bankers collect a pound of flesh, typically 5-7% of the total amount of capital raised, in 2013 that total amount of new equity sold to the market was $96 million. Investment bankers probably walked away with $6 million at the end of the transaction.

Seems pretty reasonable to say that the only persons making any return on investment are the investment bankers! Please let F.P.I. kindly remind you that Eagle Rock Energy Partners – NASDAQ:EROC is not the only company playing the “raise capital just to pay dividends because our business can’t economically support itself” game!
