Any resources/videos on getting better at making sense of Balance Sheets and Income Statements?

I think I have read enough theory about how the market functions (The Intelligent Investor and Margin of Safety: Risk-averse Value Investing Strategies for the Thoughtful Investor).

I'd like to equip myself with knowledge about how to make sense of financial statements. Point me to any books/videos on it.

Who makes a living doing this??

Was wondering how many people are trading stocks for their only source of income.

Stock Portfolio 'Open Challenge'

I am officially offering an open challenge to create the highest performing stock portfolio. The rules are: 1. Only equities ( dividends are disregarded due to Short-term portfolio). 2. The timeline is one month (August 2017). 3. The winner is the individual with the highest Gain percent overall (cumulative: added up) at the end of the month (August). 4. The price bought will be of the stock's Opening price the day the individual's portfolio is created. 5. The total number of stocks will be between 5-20 total equities. 6. This competition is for practice, interest, and fun only- and by no means to make any real money/ profit.

  • chart images are the best to track the prices for companies, and their original purchase prices.

  • If you can outperform my chart, I am offering a special gift for the winner.

  • Good luck to all and may the best person win!

How can some penny stocks start in the 10's of thousands of dollars per share and fall so dramatically?

Not looking to invest in penny stocks, I'm just wondering what conditions cause such a dramatic drop in price. An example is $TOPS which was worth ~$49,000/share in 2013 and is now trading at $0.3375/share.

Want to get started on the market

Hey guys,

So I've been looking around this subreddit for the past couple days. In the end of august I'll have about 6-10k saved up to invest in the markets. I want to start off with something safe that I can go long for because I'm still learning and can't really afford to risk losing everything. I plan on spending the next 4-6 months reading and playing around with paper money. Until then I don't want the money kinda sitting around, rather invest it in some blue chips or something safe? I know there is never a "safe" in the markets but you know what I mean. something that I can look at 4-6 months from now and now be like where did my money go?

Also, any advice on just getting started would be greatly appreciated. good brokerage websites? key terms and what they mean? etc. ill take resources as well (books and stuff)

btw im Canadian so keep that in mind because I know a lot of people here are from the US

thank you so much! being able to trade on the stock market has been my dream. now that I have my first job (I'm 18) and really no where to spend the money id like to invest some in the markets :)

EDIT: wording to avoid confusion

Stock market on July 25, 2017: thoughts and outlook

  1. Corporate credit spreads are falling. This means that a big stock market correction is not in the cards.
  2. being long volatility seems like a very attractive trade. but there's no good investment vehicle to do so
  3. tech sector's momentum is very strong. when momentum is very strong, the market rarely tops

Thoughts on Valuation Methodology?

Hello all. I've been experimenting with a different way to value equity lately and would like some feedback. My default valuation method is a DCF, of course. However, as we all know, there are many companies that the market values without fundamentals as the basis -- companies with particularly high P/E ratios.

To value these companies, I have been building out standard revenue projection models for the upcoming two yearly reporting periods and determine an expected EPS for the two periods. My intuition behind using two periods depends on how far into the fiscal year we currently are. So I have been determining the EPS figures for the remainder of the current year, and then the year after that.

From there, I take the net present value of the EPS for the next two yearly reporting periods. I'm not treating the NPV as an actual EPS projection -- it would be nearly double what the projection model produces. Rather, I treat the NPV as a multiple of sorts, understanding that the market is generally short-sighted, and looks a most valuations with a one-year time horizon.

With this "NPV multiple", if you will, I apply the peer median PE ratio, the product of which is my price target. I go with the peer median to account for the fact that this is a multiple, and not an actual EPS figure.

Personally, I only invest in companies that have strong fundamental support and that have an upside in my DCF -- however, I am curious about the theory behind this little head-project of mine and would love to hear criticism.

High Grade Zinc, Peru

Update from Zinc One: $Z.V $ZZZOF July 24, 2017 by EndzoneGreen

Zinc One has locked up surface rights for the next 5 years with the Comunidad Campesina de Yambrasbamba (“CCY”) to permit access and work on the Bongará Zinc-Oxide Mine and Charlotte Bongara Zinc-Oxide Project in Peru. This enables work to proceed updating the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), a key component of their pending drill campaign to commence in August.

Milestone Agreement for $Z.V

“Reaching an agreement with the Yambrasbamba community is a major milestone for Zinc One and the Bongará Zinc-Oxide Mine Project. The Yambrasbamba community has previously seen the full gamut of mining – from exploration to construction to operations to remediation – which is extremely rare. They are very knowledgeable and not only understand the economic opportunities it will afford the CCY stakeholders, but have seen the overall minimal impact of mining and the benefits of remediation. We are grateful to have such a supportive community and, if the project moves ahead as we expect, then we see the building of the Bongará Zinc Oxide Mine Project as a win for the community, government and company shareholders,” commented James Walchuck, CEO of Zinc One.
