Trouble with DCF - FinBox

Hey everyone, I'm new to this sub. I am a finance student home for summer vacation and am interning at a mutual fund as a summer analyst. I've never heard of FinBox before joining this sub, and have decided to use it as a tool to help better my DCF modeling; I've always had trouble at calculating WACC when it comes to real companies, as opposed to from a textbook.

I am having trouble finding out how much of the company in question (UTX) is funded by Equity. FinBox says it is 20% financed by Equity, but I am having trouble creating that figure myself. It seems they calculated it using [(Long-term + Short-term Debt)/Total Assets], but I was taught to use [(Short-term + Long-term Debt)/(Short term + Long-term Debt + Equity)].

Can anyone offer some advice on how they found this figure, and how I can find it myself? Thanks in advance.

[Question] What are the best ways to invest in Water?

Hello, I'm a former lurker and a new poster here.

I want to get invested in water. I've checked out some stocks like $PHO $PIO, $CGW, and $AWK. I'll be trading using a cash account on Robinhood. Prefer to hold onto something long term.

My gut says go with the international ETF and put my money in $CGW. But what the hell do I know?

Just thought I'd ask you jerks if you had thoughts on trading water and I'm open to look into recommendations.

Does efficient market=RIGGED market for the average person who wants to invest?

If markets are 100% efficient, it means prices move as quickly as important events happen. By the time anyone depending on the news researches a stock, its already too late by then. Insider traders and high speed computers rob others of investment opportunities. Everything is baked into stock prices as each event happens. Its no use to rely on news which reports things hours after they happen.

What's the discount on InBev/Diageo/MolsonCoors due to change in marijuana laws?

I gotta think that big liquor is working on a way to monetize their regulated channels for pot friendly jurisdictions, as well as in places like Canada (where legalization has just been announced).

I mean, they are not complementary products, and if pot sells, it will displace 'x' bottles of total consumption of booze (my assumption here).

Sure as shit someone out there has a model. And options and futures prices should crystallize it.

The pie is only so big, right?

So, while I don't expect a nifty spreadsheet to hit my inbox, I would like to hear from any thinkers out there who see the future as I do.

I expect a 3-4% decline in industry volumes in places like Colorado, Washington, and Oregon. I'd also think California would be a bit of a drop as well.

AVHI and DRAD, two stocks with good fundamentals.

So I've been messing around with the screener on Finviz.com for a while, and here are some stocks that caught my eye based solely on descriptive and fundamental criteria: AAT, AVHI, DRAD, and TLLP. Link to Screener on FinViz

I usually stay away from the financial sector as more of a swing trader, so AAT is out. I don't trust Oil & Gas production is going to heavily increase anytime soon so TLLP is out. That leaves AVHI and DRAD. I'm not the most technical guy, but these look like potentially good investments... any thoughts?

Why do some stocks have very high trading volumes and what can one infer from that ? (examples : BAC, AMD etc)

Hi Folks,

I've noticed some stocks such as BAC, AMD, MSFT, PFE etc. seem to have a consistently high trading volume and yet they don't seem to share any fundamental similarities.

What are the things one can infer from stocks that have high trading volumes ? Is it beneficial for stock and option traders to consider the high volume stock only ?

Food and Beverage companies & Probiotics

With more and more research suggesting the significance and importance of a healthy microbiome, I think that probiotics in the food industry are going to be a huge avenue that food and beverage companies travel down in the coming years. With that being said, I don't have the investment know-how to predict what these companies are. What companies do you think would be good to look further into? Danone comes to mind but their stock has been doing very well for some time now and I'm not sure now would be the time to buy them. What do you guys think?

Could someone with Margin help me out?

I just had Margin activated on my account @ Scottrade recently. The thing is, I have yet to use Margin funds. I talked to support and they said their system is set up to ALWAYS use my available cash first. They also do not allow the use of Margin on Stock <$3.

Here's where I'm confused, I have a stock <$3 that I've been holding long and it was split into 5k and 15k positions for the same ticker. I looked deeper and it says that the 15k position is held on margin and the 5k position is held on cash.. This stock has never touch $3 since I bought it, not to mention I've had it well before I activated Margin.

After the confusion comes the problem, I went in on another ticker today and now I have a Margin call for the exact price of what I paid... However it was also <$3 .. Has anyone had this issue? The folks at scottrade do not seem to understand and told me to just "Deposit $2,000".. Not what I want to do at this point.

I want to build my own trading platform to connect to my brokers like IB or speed-trader. 2. Am i going to need live data that i will need to pay for or can yahoo finance be suffice for scanning stocks? 3. What all will I need to code up for my platform( stock screener, charts, etc. ?) to be able to trade. 4. Should i invest in my own server to put all of this on or just rent a VPS?

Feedback on Put selling strategy

Hi All,

Not sure where to post this, but I have a pile of cash that I'd like to keep as cash, but put to work and I don't mind risking a little of it.

My thought is to sell a spread of puts in two uncorrelated assets. I'm aiming at SPY and TLT. I'm thinking of selling putts at just OOM and then buying puts say 10% OOM as reinsurance.

So, example, let's say SPY is at 200. I sell 1 month puts at 198 and buy an equal number of contracts at 188. Max loss is $1000 per vertical spread. I do this for SPY and equivalent for TLT.

Let's say I put up $20k to cash secure the trades. This would let me be sell roughly 20 of these combos a month (10 for each SPY and TLT). I'm conservatively guessing about $150 profit per vertical spread (this fluctuates of course) and thus bring in about $3k/month with a max realistic loss of $10k in a given month (I could reload a few times if needed, could put up another $50k, but hoping profits will build a cushion over time).

Has anyone done this? Are any of my assumptions faulty? Are their hidden fees that would eat my lunch? Thoughts?

Tips to avoid the typical flaws while processing financial data

Hello again /r/StockMarket,

My brother is back with another very informative article. This one is a bit shorter (1600ish words) and revolves around the preparation of financial data. He explains why the quality of the data you collect matters and then proceeds to give some tips on how to avoid the frequent flaws there can be while processing financial data. He ends up the article with a section on propriety rights on data and explain why he thinks that less precise financial data should be made available, free of any rights to anyone.

Why do Biotech stocks go down after receiving an approval for one of their drugs?

Advisory committees and clinical data can produce a surge in stock price. Finally approving the drug to the market, however, appears to only result in declines in share price. The decline in stock price is either very rapid if the application is rejected, or it is a slow decline if the FDA approves the drug. Why does this happen? It appears very irrational, since all of the preceding events are linked to a hopeful approval, but when that approval comes, the share price doesn't respond in the expected way.

Regulation A+ vs. Title III Crowdfunding. what i think.

Crowdfunding has made waves despite its short time of existence, and it has proved to be an essential means for raising capital for starting up businesses. Its success cannot be denied, no wonder it caught the minds of entrepreneurs and investors.

There are three different types of equity crowdfunding offered under the JOBS Act:

  1. Accredited Crowdfunding - Regulation D (made possible by Title II)

  2. Crowdfunding Plus, Title IV/Regulation A+ (“Reg. A+”)

  3. Retail Crowdfunding, Title III/Regulation Crowdfunding (“Reg. CF”)

These are the types of equity crowdfunding but we will be discussing the major difference between Crowdfunding plus, Title IV/Regulation A+ and Retail Crowdfunding, Title III/Regulation Crowdfunding.

Actually, these two are pretty much similar to each other because for the most part they do the exact same thing. The regulation A+ allows entrepreneurs raise up to 50million dollars a year from non-accredit and accredit investors alike, but it does require the prior authorization of the SAC before a company can begin selling shares and collecting cash. While the Retail Crowdfunding, Title III/Regulation Crowdfunding is only allowed to raise up to a million dollars a year and does not require the prior authorization of the SAC before a company can begin selling shares and collecting cash.

Here are the common advantages of the two:

● Founders set terms

● Founders set value of company

● Founders set number and price of shares

● Founders set minimum investment

Howbeit the difference between these two, I don't think Title IV (Regulation A+) and Title III (Regulation CF) of the JOBS Act should be competing to determine which is better. Both are designed to serve two different audiences and as such will be best suited for different companies at different stages.

what do you think about this?

A bit confused about the whole algo bots thing

Hi everyone!

I'm a coder and I want to have some fun playing with different algorithms at least in the virtual money side of the stock market. Preferably I'd like to access CFDs, Indices etc not only Forex which seems to be almost obligatory.

I've been looking around and it seems that everyone uses MetaTrader and its MQ4L or 5 language. So I guess that's an option. If I learn that language, is there somewhere to test the bots? I've never used MetaTrader but it looks really old and badly designed. Does MT have big downsides?

I also discovered cTrader and its cAlgo program that also allows to code bots, this time in C# (I love it!).

I haven't been able to find more platforms where I can code bots. Are there more?

Do you have any recommendations/suggestions about this?

Thanks!!

PS: I use Mac OSX but I guess I can crank up a virtual machine with windows if it's necessary.

An "Insane" trading strategy

About a year ago I saved a fellow redditor's quote on his trading strategy. It peaked my interest and I wanted to know what you guys thought of his method. Does it seem viable?

I liquidated my positions and used a strategy I can only describe as insane. I completely ignored fundamentals, and focused only on the daily price of the share and the chart. Each day I searched for companies whose stocks were priced under $10 and were on a sharp upward trajectory. I would then buy a large amount of shares, between 25K and 50K worth (double if I was using margin). I held the position for literally seconds or minutes, and then sold. The stocks may have only gone up ten to twenty cents in time I had them, but that earned me $1K or $2K per trade.

Quick question!

Okay so, I have been for the past few months playing around with ninja traders past market simulations.

I got a hold of some actual past market data and have been trading that with the sim account and have been doing fairly well.

So naturally I want to take a little bit of money and start making some real investments.

But I heard somewhere you need 25k to start an account?

And then my friend who invests says that you don't need 25k you only need 500$

So which is right?

Also, when in simulation trading, the fills are basically instantaneous, how much lag should I expect in live trading?

If I only want to put 500$ in a trading account, and make maybe 5 trades a week, what stocks would be good to trade?

AUD FX - when to buy?

With USD strengthening on the back of FED talk for June rate hike, AUD USD is now around 0.72. But Australia is cutting interest rates. I was thinking of buying AUD at .70 but then if US rates move up, but Australia cuts rates further .70 may no longer be a good entry point.

What are others thinking on AUD FOREX, and Australian stocks?

Also my RH account shows AH trading where I am almost always up but it almost always nearly goes away by the time the market opens. Who is trading after hours and if I sell after hours will I get the price at the time I submit to sell or the price when trading opens again? Thanks in advance.

I feel like this stock is going to do real well in the upcoming months. Just last year, the stock was worth $10k. Now it's worth $3.65. This year the company plans to focus more on growth and R&D. I'm sure it will go up a lot. It could potentially go north of a couple hundred dollars, like $500. Thoughts?

Loss

First day trading on Robinhood. I went from fast making money in seconds to losing $350 minutes later. I tried to outsmart in something I didn't know about. I was treating the move like a day trader and I know I'm not ready for that. My mistake.

IF I don't invest any further, do I need to claim this Or do I need to claim this? OR

IF I invest more and make some gains, how does this work with calculating loss/gains and taxes?

I think I want to put it behind me and focus on other more important things right now. I'm not hurting for money but far from rich. I want to learn from this..and focus on investing any passive money I make instead of primary source.

Any insight is appreciated.

Good entry point right now, I see REXX going to $2 + in the next 1-2 months. 10+ in 1.5-2 years Why????????????

Price of NG will increase. NG is the future towards a smaller carbon footprint. All over the globe coal powered plants will and are switching over to NG powered. Either fully and or partial and that partial will convert over time to fully NG operations.

DLR: Does 12M new shares mean dilution or increased market cap?

Digital Realty Trust (DLR) is getting added to the SP500. At the same time DLR annouced that it has priced an underwritten registered public offering of 12,500,000 shares of its common stock, all of which are being offered in connection with the forward sales agreements described here

Does it mean that:

A. The existing outstanding shares will be dilluted by the addition of 12.5 million new shares out of thin air, or:

B. Since the new shares are sold for cash at a value exceeding current share price ($96), the market cap will increase by 12.5M x 96 = 1.2 billion USB; these new 1.2 billions being a cash infusion. So it's a way for companies to increase market price without changing existing share prices.

C. Something else.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

A clear and thorough analysis of the importance of volume while trading

Hello /r/StockMarket,

My brother just published a long (2000ish words) explantation regarding the importance of volume analysis while trading stocks and how to visualize them. I found it very instructing and I think it might help here. I would gladly copy/paste the content of the post here, but the article revolves around visualization so it will be hard to understand without the pictures. Synergy Resources Corporation (NYSE: SYRG) Q1 2016 Earnings Discussion

Synergy Resources Corporation (NYSE: SYRG) posted 1Q16 net loss of $51.4MM or $0.42 loss per diluted share vs. net loss of $0.99MM or $0.01 loss per diluted share in 1Q15. 1Q16 net loss includes a full cost ceiling impairment charge of $45.6MM or $0.37 loss per diluted share. Revenues fell 0.67% to $18.27MM vs. 1Q15.

The company recently entered into a purchase and sales agreement to acquire approx. 33,000 net acres of the Wattenberg field. The acquisition is comprised largely of undeveloped acreage that is contiguous and should allow for drilling longer lateral wells that will yield improved economics.

In 1Q16, its production averaged 1510 BOE/d, which is a 65% increase from 1Q15 and 6% increase vs. period ended Dec. 21, 2015. This increase was mainly driven by the production from Bestway and Winds pads which were completed late in 2015. The company did not bring additional wells on in production in 1Q16.

Oil - my thoughts and expectations (basically best guesses) on the industry. Please call me a dumbass if you think I'm wrong and save me some money.

I think that oil will go back up in price, not to 2007 levels but most likely to float around $60-70/barrel and stay there for a while. I'm not sure when this will happen but I don't want to miss the wave that takes it there. I'm concerned about what's going to happen with Saudi Arabia and Iran. They are not able to settle on oil production but I imagine an agreement will be met soon because they both rely on it as a major source of income for their country and there are so many major oil players whose goal is to calm their production which will diminish the glut.

Also, the glut that was created by Iran to increase their market share by the oil market has been partially accomplished. While it hasn't removed major players, it has been able to effect exporters that would be considered developing countries. Developing exporting countries do not have the institutional support that major economies have to manage the losses that follow massive decreases in price of exported commodities. In economics, the standard for operating in a variable price commodity market (oil) is to continue to operate through low/unprofitable prices since price will increase in the future and recoup losses.

Professionally, I have eliminated positions in fracking and other smaller private oil & gas services companies. Smaller private companies in the oil industry will continue to go under as they don't have the support that would come with major companies. Of course many will survive, but you don't want to lose your investment on a bankrupt company. I'm remaining reserved to deploying capital to companies earning less than $1B in revenue. However, the smaller companies that survive will either have a great return when the market stabilizes, and/or become an acquisition target which will also increase return. I'm seeing smaller oil companies go under as evidenced by the availability of office space in the Houston commercial real estate market.

Investing in ETF's is a good alternative that is already diversified. I like the ETF USO, United States Oil Fund LP. When oil was trading at $49.76/barrel the ETF USO was trading for $14.60/share in Aug 2015. Right now it's at $11.70/share. In Dec 2014 oil was at $53.27/barrel and USO was at $24/share.

With the current market do you think this is a good buy?

Any advice on how to write a summary of a company; convincing that it is a good buy/sell position? (x-post)

From my understanding, this should include:

1) A description of the business

2) Discussion of it's market position

3) Outlook for the business (positive/negative points)

4) Buy, Hold or Sell recommendation (providing your reasoning)

Can anyone provide an example of such a summary (doesn't matter what company), or share any websites/books that might have similar examples?

Much appreciated!

Thoughts on MGT long term?

Wanted the opinion of people who can be serious (as opposed to WSB) about MGT? I bought it with the intention of holding it, as I believe John McAfee really knows his shit and is likely to do well in the cybersecurity industry.. however (I'm new) I learned this weekend of a tactic known as "pump and dump" where you hype up a stock to artificially raise price then it crashes. There are a LOT of people talking about this stock. Do you guys think MGT is a pump and dump and maybe I should get out and back in after it stabilizes? I bought at $1.59 (little late to the party I know).

NFLX p/e @ 300. Is this sustainable?

Netflix has a current p/e of 300. Shares are valued at ridiculous prices to what profit they currently make. Do you think that they will expand so much as to meet this expectation, or is now the time to sell? I generally don't feel comfortable holding anything that crawls past 200, but netflix is netflix, and I wouldn't think it will be going anywhere any time soon.

What are your thoughts on PREDICTION MARKETS?

There are sites where you can bet on the future like for politics or weather or sports or any kind of important event. Its a zero sum 0-$1 range stock game. If you buy a share of an event for 60 cents, that means either someone sold you that share for 60 cents or someone else bought a 40 cent share at the same time to trade with you. From this point on, if everyone did nothing, someone would win and the other lose. If the 60 cent share you bought meant YES Donald Trump will be the GOP nominee and the 40 cent share means someone else bought NO Donald Trump will lose. If Donald Trump wins, you gain 40 cents from each 60 cent share purchased. Winners share price always close at a $1 and losers close at $0.. You can buy stocks of a person or event happening/not happening thinking its likely to win. The more likely betters see something being a sure thing, the closer its stock price rises to $1. When it happens, the market pays out $1 for every 1-99 cent share purchased if it comes true and $0 if your wrong.

More fun that the stock market?

How do you feel about this compared to the stock market?

What should I know about the stock I buy?

Hey there! I've been investing for a few years and I'm glad to say I'm in the positive. So far, my strategy has been buying well-known companies that are doing things I like. I buy several times a year, buying on the dips. I know you can't catch a falling dagger, but I at least want to get in on a down day or down week. Finally, I try to balance my portfolio rather than buy all one stock. I've only exited trades where I didn't like the direction of the company.

But, yeah, I know nothing about the underlying stock. I might like Ford because I think we are going to see an increase in car sales over the next few years... but, that doesn't mean Ford IS a good stock. I might like Zillow because I think people are going to buy more real estate online over the next few years... but that doesn't mean Zillow is a good bet on that market.

So, the question is: what can I do to make myself more informed? Like what numbers should I look at and where can I find them? If it helps, I do my stocks at Scottrade. I always hear about indicators and fundamentals, but I'm not sure what is useful and what is noise.

Robust trading interface without commission fees?

Is there a trading platform/software that any of the brokerage firms offer commission-free? I'm looking to get involved with some light trades with only a couple grand. Day trades on small stocks, trying to profit off the move. If I make money, great, which will be my goal. But even if I lose a little bit, my purpose here is a learning experience, and to get a taste of what it's all about.

So, with my low capital, and high frequency of trades throughout the day, a commission model would be counter productive for me. Perhaps there's a flat fee per month model. Again, I would chalk that up to learning experience.

Furthermore, I would be interested to watch a web series, or a relatively respected youtube channel that uses the recommended platform any of you fellow redditors may suggest, and teaches even the basics of the analytical of trading and chart reading.

Thank you in advance - much appreciated.

Survey for school project (5 minutes)

For my year 12 Software Development class, we must complete a School Assessed Task (SAT) which contributes 30 percent to our final score. The brief of this task is to, 'Identify a real world need or opportunity for a software solution created through the use of a programming language.'

My identified solution is a program for individual investors, which will allow them to store their portfolio data; search and view company stock data; visualize data through the utilization of graphs and tables; learn about investments and stocks.

As part of this task, we must survey potential users/clients, and so, here I am.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could fill this short survey out.

Amazon

Earlier this year, when there was blood in the streets in China and stocks where down, I was close to pulling the trigger. I knew it was the time to buy, and AMZN is at an all time high. I keep beating myself up over not hitting it then. I still want some skin in the stock but $700/share is rich. However, I believe it will eventually hit $1,000 and/or split at some point.

I am new to investing in the stock market. My experience is in real estate. I have $10,000.00 that I want to invest. This is set aside to start in trading. I know the idea is to spread out my money, but I can diversify later. My thinking is to invest at least $8,000.00 I would make a nice return on my money within the year. I believe in this company and believe they are just warming up. My question is, if I only have $8,000.00 to invest, is this a smart move? I know it's not much but my return will surpass any interest a bank will return. I have additional money in the bank and it's not working for me. I want to start putting my money to work. I would like to break into day trading at some point. Is Interactive Brokers ideal for this?

If I play it right, it's going to hit a high at the end of the year, then split. At that point, I can diversify my portfolio. I want to invest in something I know and believe in. I will also be making money from Amazon from other services they offer so I will also be reinvesting some of my earnings over time, or using that money for other stocks.

Please give me any insight as I am new to the game. Thanks. Summary: New to investing, I want to invest $10,000.00, do I buy in Amazon, wait for it to hit even higher, then split? OR wait for it to drop in price, then buy? OR is $10,000.00 such a small amt to even think about AMZN.

Can someone please help me to understand how paying off a loan and reducing PPE can affect shareholders?

All I know is that if loans are paid of then the net profit will decrease which will cause an decrease in the dividend paid per share. But what other effects are there? In terms of liquidity would the firm be more liquid as there is now less liability?, but wouldn't that be countered by the bank decrease? How will PPE affect the shareholder? Decreasing PPE will cause increase cash and cash equivalents but how will that affect the shareholder?

Need help finding intrinsic value calculator

Hello everybody, I'm a young guy that's new to investing and have dipped my toes in the water with the new Robinhood app on my phone. If you guys haven't heard of it, it's a trading app that doesn't charge for transactions, pretty cool.

I'm trying to get into value investing and I realize that there has to be online calculators out there. The only one I've been able to find is here

It's one of the 'pay for extra features' websites and that worries me a bit.

I'm a math guy and would like to rely on numbers instead of my gut when picking stocks, so this value investing concept struck chord with me. I have the ability to do the math myself however I'd be more comfortable if there were a tried and true calculator on the net.

Can someone help me understand dividends?

I am new to investing and I bought 3 shares of Apple stock since it's fairly low in cost right now.

I bought last week (using RobinHood) and now I see that I already have Dividends that are being paid.

My understanding is that Dividends for a lot of stocks happen once every quarter. Can I really just buy right before the Dividend and receive that? I know there are tax implications, and I thought the stock always drops by it's dividend amount to prevent people from buying and selling right before and after the Dividend.

How long "before" the dividend payout do you have to buy before you are "qualified"? Wouldn't there always be a large influx of buyers right before the Dividends are paid out?

Thanks - and go easy on this noob :-)
