Market timing - moving up from fear to greed...

“I will tell you the secret to getting rich on Wall Street. You try to be greedy when others are fearful. And you try to be fearful when others are greedy.” ― Warren Buffett

Started the week in fear on CNN Money’s “Fear and Greed Index” so I suppose it is appropriate to end the week with a look at how the market moved up from fear and racked up a lot of swing-trading profit in the process.

My post from last Sunday.

So where are we now? See the chart below. The blue-block line is the Nasdaq Composite. The red-block line is the Fear-and-Greed Index.

In this market context, and as my daily price signals kicked in, the leveraged index ETFs: TQQQ closed today up 10.3%, XIV up 8.9%, TNA up 7.0% and $UPRO up 5.3%. Among the sector leverage ETFs LABU closed up 17.3%, and SOXL was up 12.7%. The leader among my bellwether stocks, as of today’s close, was NFLX up 5.8%.

Me thinks it doesn’t take long staring at those percentages to recognize the value of market timing and swing trading. Of course it is not always like this but when it is…well, it just is…

The 5-minute day-trading stocks for today – FB, NVDA, TSLA, AMZN, and NFLX – had four winners (NVDA, the leader) and one loser (NFLX) and finished up .60%. Not all that much, but winners are winners and a profit is a profit. Only NVDA of the ten bellwethers meets the criteria for a buy on tomorrow’s open. That may be saying something, given there were four or five to buy on every other day in this bullish week.

Also, given that these index ETFs are up four or five days in a row, and TQQQ and the Nasdaq Composite are both overbought, close to two standard deviations of an average advance, and given that trading will likely slow going into the holiday weekend, I will not be surprised to see sideways-to-slightly down Friday.

All buy signals are in place and long-term breadth remains positive and is accelerating so this is still a bull market that is going to go up until it goes down.

THE CHART IS ON SCREENCAST

Is it possible to make this much money in such a short period of time?

100% serious question. I can't believe I am actually asking this, but I am not familiar with the stock market so I am not sure. One of my past colleagues has supposedly made crazy money on the stock market. He's 20 years old and has been buying stocks for the past 2 years. 4 months ago he started buying stocks with his own money of 620$. Fast forward to today and his balance is supposedly around 200,000$. Is it possible to make this much money in such a short period of time? I heard that he bought a Patek Philippe and has moved downtown since then. Is this possible in life? Please tell me

Need help finding a book for a complete beginner.

I'm sure this question has been asked to death and yes I have searched previous questions on this subreddit, but none of the books recommended seemed beginner friendly to me. I have no experience whatsoever and I'd like to find a book that would help me start learning. Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks.

Optimal Defensive Portfolio

Belief that the market is overvalued and due for some turmoil in near future seems to be increasing among market participants each day. Our PM has slowly began moving to cash and I have been tasked with analyzing various defensive portfolios/holdings. I am curious, what are your portfolio plans for the year(s) ahead? What are your favorite risk-on holdings and why?

Stock market is crooked, period

I was an investor and a trader for over 10 years. My experience has been that the stocks I buy and hold don't double or triple or quadruple...EVER! The stocks I sold, however, had very nice runs. I've owned 50 plus different stocks, from varying sectors. All of them are well known, with decent balance sheets. But when 100 percent of my holdings stay flat for multiple years, while the ones I let go keep going up and up and up, I can't trust the people running the stock market. To me, it is clearly obvious that Wall Street deliberately manipulates individual stock prices to generate profits for themselves only. It's sickening that CEOs and boards pay themselves millions while leaving their shareholders with losses. I feel so betrayed, supposedly being part owner of these companies, but they won't share the profits. The corrupt nature of the stock market, and the people who are always ready to defend it, is beyond alarming. People actually get paid by Wall Street to spread lies. It's been many years now since I gave Wall Street the finger, selling all my positions. I took losses mostly, and it didn't surprise me in the least when all of a sudden, those losers started to appreciate in price. I just shake my head, it's a racket really. But I paid off all my loans with the proceeds, so no more interest payments to the bank. No more commissions and fees to brokers. All of my income is all mine, not shared with lenders because I have none! Ultimately, I beat Wall Street. And i laugh now, every time I see a stock market monkey trying to pump markets! Save yourself the time and money and headaches by learning from my experience. It really is crooked, and you will never make serious money unless you are an insider.

Mistakes to avoid while Investing in Stock Market

Mistakes are part of life; there are people who would learn from it and some would take their lives to a dump.  The same goes with Stock Market. Stock market is hit and trial for those who do not strategise & analyse their work and while doing analysis they tend to make mistakes.

Mistakes happen in stock market all the time not only small, but also big ones. There are times when people become Riches to Rags and also stories from Rags to Riches.  Stock market is a strong force which can make you rich in a day and vice-versa. Therefore it is mandatory to analyze and make strategies before entering in Stock Market.

So here are some Mistakes you can avoid while Investing:-

  1. OVER TRADING

Always engage in the market if you have enough funds. Don’t try to invest when your funds are less than required. Always maintain your portfolio and do some investments. Investment is done for profits and you only gain something when you are patient. So the point goes that don’t over trade. Have control over your emotions because sometimes it happens that the stocks are doing well and you don’t have enough balance in your account. So the best way to go is to wait until you generate funds and then do your investments.

  1. DON’T TRADE ON HOPE

Any decision based on finance should be strategized not hoped. If you like a stock to be bought, buy it, but only after some market research. There are some people who buy stocks without market research and buy only on hope that it would give benefits. Hope is a very good thing but in the financial sector it is important to keep your emotions in check.

  1. DON’T GO AGAINST THE TREND

There are two types of trend in the market up trend and down trend. These trends happen within a time frame. This time frame is when the stock market works.

Now when the market is in the upward trend one can always invest to get good profits in any segment. But when the market goes down one should not panic and sell off the stock because market will recover from its lows. So hold your horses and don’t sell off your stocks in losses.

  1. ALWAYS HAVE A RISK TO REWARD RATIO

If you are an investor, the main thing you have to take care of is your risk to reward ratio. One has to maintain the ratio of 1:2 or 1:3 to get some profits. The ratio of 1:1 is not favourable to anyone. While investing maintaining your Risk to Reward ratio is vital for your kitty.

5.TRADE OR INVEST ACCORDING TO YOUR RISK APPETITE

The portfolio of every person is different. Everyone has their own capacity to invest and digest losses. Always keep a stop loss on downside according to your risk appetite

6.DON’T RELY TOO MUCH ON NEWS AND RUMOURS

Be your own boss. Don’t rely on news or rumours. Maintain your strategies and work accordingly. Don’t let other tell you what to do or not to do. Study the market and have your own opinion.

  1. HAVE PATIENCE

The main mantra to stock market is to have patience. As  market keeps on  fluctuating, don’t go paranoid. Keep a track of the stock. It won’t stay down forever.

  1. NO DIVERSIFICATION

There are people who don’t diversify and work on any stock or every stock they can. The key to success is to divide your portfolio. Divide a certain amount on certain shares and then invest.

  1. CROWD MENTALITY

It’s a very tricky point. Do not follow the herd mentality do your homework in terms of research and analysis. Do not buy stocks if everyone is buying the same stock. Only if your analysis is right then only go for it. Following the crowd mentality will always leave you to disaster.

  1. NOT SETTING A STOP LOSS

One of the biggest mistakes traders do while trading in stock market is they never follow the system of stop loss. Trading without stop loss can ruin your portfolio/wealth and can lead you into losses. Always put your stop loss which should follow your risk: reward management.

Is the S&P 500 Index Fairly Priced?

Putting aside a multitude of factors impacting short-term trends, this blog focuses on 5 basic long-term market trends or correlations. For this discussion, we will look at the post-depression S&P 500 Index from June 1932 to early 2017. More specifically, we will compare expected market valuations based upon long-term trends for the following:

 Log (S&P 500 Index Price) vs. Time  S&P 500 Index Price vs. Earnings  S&P 500 Index Price vs. Dividends  Log (S&P 500 Index Price) vs. Log (Earnings)  Log (S&P 500 Index Price) vs. Log (Dividends)

First, long-term growth rate of the S&P 500 Index from June 1932 to July 2017: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 0.7239 x (1.071115)YR-1900

By substituting the numerical value of 2017.646 for 08/24/2017, we get: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 0.7239 x (1.071115)2017.646-1900 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 0.7239 x 3236.67 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 2343.02 (-4.1% relative to the 08/24/2017 close)

Second, long-term linear relationship between Price and Earnings for the S&P 500 Index from June 1932 to July 2017: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 20.078 x (Earnings) - 6.12

By substituting the latest Earnings of $100.70 for July 2017, we get: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 20.078 x (100.70) - 6.12 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 2021.85 - 6.12 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 2015.73 (-17.5% relative to the 08/24/2017 close)

Third, long-term linear relationship between Price and Dividends for the S&P 500 Index from June 1932 to July 2017: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 52.279 x (Dividends) - 56.99

By substituting the latest Dividends of $47.19 for July 2017, we get: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 52.279 x (47.19) - 56.99 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 2467.05 - 56.99 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 2410.06 (-1.4% relative to the 08/24/2017 close)

Fourth, long-term relationship between Log (Price) and Log (Earnings) for the S&P 500 Index from June 1932 to July 2017: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 12.601 x (Earnings)1.0958

By substituting the latest earnings of $100.70 for July 2017, we get: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 12.601 x (100.70)1.0958 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 12.601 x 156.6461 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 1973.90 (-19.2% relative to the 08/24/2017 close)

Fifth, long-term relationship between Log (Price) and Log (Dividends) for the S&P 500 Index from June 1932 to July 2017: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 20.46 x (Dividends)1.2596

By substituting the latest Dividends of $47.19 for July 2017, we get: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 20.46 x (47.19)1.2596 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 20.46 x 128.346 (Expected Value)S&P500 = 2625.95 (+7.5% relative to the 08/24/2017 close)

By taking all 5 expected values and factoring in the respective correlations we get the following weighted average: (Expected Value)S&P500 = 2277.61 (-6.8% relative to the 08/24/2017 close)

Opiant Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. Opiant Pharmaceuticals, Inc. operates as a subsidiary of Pelikin Group."

Today, OPNT received approval to begin trading officially on the Nasdaq exchange. This comes from a previous listing on the OTC boards.

I have been watching this stock for several months. Opiant Pharma's newest drug was FDA approved only recently. Narcan is the only FDA approved and patented Nalaxone administered nasally. Opiant gives permission to Adapt Pharma located in Ireland to distribute and manufacture their drug.

Opiant is also involved in developing treatments for binge eating disorder and cocaine use disorder, as well as Bulimia Nervosa, an eating disorder; and heroin vaccine.

With the recent scourge of drug overdoses Narcan is set to take off worldwide. It is also one of the cheaper options for patients.

Police and fire departments receive special pricing as well as schools and other civic facilities.

Only recently has this stock popped since CEO of Opiant Roger Crystal appeared on a segment of Fox and Friends.

Stock went from $7 to its current high of $23.48 in less than 2 months.

I post this advice for any amateur trader who wants a great stock at a discount. This company is only trading at a P/E of about 8 whereas their patent for Narcan expires in about 17 years. It's an almost guaranteed stock.

Many people ask me daily for sure bets. Even though there is rarely a sure bet, this is the closest it will get to it.

Thank you.

For example: Take XLK (a fund with tech stocks). It goes up even as most of the tech stocks go down.

Thoughts on hurricane Harvey impacting the market?

I'm curious what peoples thoughts are on this. I struggle sometimes to understand how events around the world may or may not affect the stock markets. It seems sometimes like a high ranking politician can sneeze and the market will go down for a day. Yet we're at the cusp of a historic catastrophic storm that's expected to cost many billions to recover from and the market's just chugging along like nothing's happening.

There is some expectation that oil prices will rise because rigs are shutting down. What would this mean for oil stocks? Commodities? Insurance? Automotive (flooded cars being replaced)?

Or perhaps because this storm is localized to one relatively small region, maybe it won't have any effect at all?

I would like to hear peoples' thoughts on this

I've automated the DD/Fundamental Analysis Process

Hi all!

Some of you know me here, some don't. For those who don't, I'm Chris, I'm a long time member and a full time trader and have been involved with the markets for nearly 14 years at this point. I also make things, and I've recently created something awesome that I want you to test.

So here you go...I give you LazyFA (clicky!)!

It uses 15 years of fundamental data (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, metrics, etc) to automate the due diligence and fundamental analysis process (think Vuru or Simply WallSt but better, and prettier). I have several hundred people beta testing it already but I need more. I am really beating the crap out of this thing now so I'd love to hear your feedback. If you want to use it (I mean, it's free...free stuff is awesome!) just head over to the link above and fill out the form and I'll send you an invite in a couple days!

If you have any questions or want to discuss it here feel free. I'm looking for any/all feedback and would love to hear how people who are already using it are enjoying it.

Thanks!

Computers and the market.

Hello Everyone,

First time poster to this sub, just had an idea. Warren Buffet has such a simple approach to the market, buy value. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that’s something many people can easily do. I’ve been doing it for a few weeks now and I’ve noticed some stocks that are undervalued.

I know the Stock Market is now heavily computerized. With things like bot-stock traders. Do you think anyone has put together a formula/program to calculate these values? Essentiality like gathering information from the stock market off easy to reach information like financial statements. Inputting said information to a custom formula to evaluate a company and throwing that data into an Excel doc?

Basically what I’m asking is this has to have been done before, right? With all of the extreme computer programs and programmers out there; if this does exist anyone know what it’s called?

Thanks for your time.

Am I stuck in CRF forever..?

So I bought CRF about 5 months ago not really knowing what it was, and it seems to be (even looking back 7+ years) in an eternal spiral downward.
I'm wondering if there is ever going to be any hope for this "stock" (read: Ponzi Scheme) or is it just going to keep giving me my own money back in the form of "dividends" until the fund dries up? Or is there a chance it will move back up?

My opinion of it is, I feel I lost an amount that I can't pull out now. But the entire fund seems to be one of paying "investors" back their own initial investment in the form of "dividends" while all the actual returns go to fund managers..?

Any thoughts, opinions, comments, suggestions on this (apparently legal) "fund"?

Question about some old stock I inherited.

After a relative recently passed I found some old stocks (1914) from the sunbeam oil company ltd in Calgary Alberta. It seems the company didn't last long 1914-16. There are a total of 225 $1 shares. I have no experience in this kind of thing and was curious if any of you knew, or could point me in the right direction, to find out if these are of any value? I have a feeling that since the company no longer exists then they are worthless but like I said, I have no experience with this sort of thing. Any help would be much appreciated.

Trade with the trend and let it ride? Futures day trading

So today I was paper trading the Emini Dow. I just trade with the stochastic studies which indicate overbought and oversold levels. I have been only scalping 3-4 points but have noticed on the 5 minute chart that the swings from OB or OS can be 25 points plus. Obviously since the market has been on a down trend I learned to trade with the trend. So far after each consolidation a new lower low would be formed by like 30+ points.

While viewing the stochastic on the 10 minute or even the 30min chart that gave me the best predictability outcome with an easy 20point trade(forgot to add that I followed this route today and made a fast 20 point trade and then an hour later another 14 points). I would like to hear your guys opinions or thoughts to my thoughts, should I add some more studies, ex fibonacci, or just keep observing?

tl;dr put out a contract for whatever direction the trend is going for 20 points?

What are your thoughts about Alibaba (BABA) stock?

Never heard of the company until I came across an article yesterday where they absolutely crushed it with their quarterly earnings. It seems like the stock has only been around ~3 years and has a very similar business model to Amazon. It seems like the value of the stock dropped within a year of the IPO release and now is stabilizing into a rapid growth that parallels many successful tech companies. From my limited knowledge, Alibaba is a popular online bulk retail store based in China. My gut is telling me this is a guaranteed money money maker but I'd like to hear your guys' speculation.

If I buy a foreign listed OTC pink sheet for AUD, and sell the stock back to USD, assuming the USD weakens by the time I make the sale, would I make a profit?

Just curious! This has confused the heck out of me. Keep in mind, I'm an American, thus my currency is the American Dollar.

TL;DR: Say I buy an OTC pink sheet listed on the Australian Stock Exchange for $.50 AUD, and then the price of this stock jumps to $.53 AUD or so. Then when I want to sell the stock at around $.53 AUD or so, the US Dollar happens to weaken.

Would this mean that I'd make a profit from the weakening of the USD? I know I'd already make a $0.03 profit on each share however.

If you need me to elaborate, then I will definitely do that! Thank you!!

Any particular reason $AMZN has been tanking recently?

I've been searching around for articles pertaining to why Amazon shares have been consistently falling since its high of about 1083 a few weeks back but can't find much.

r/StockMarket Weekly Stock Picking Challenge for the Week of (8/21-8/25) is now OPEN!

WEEKLY CHALLENGE RULES (PLEASE FOLLOW THESE!):

  • Pick 2 stocks (only with a minimum price of >$2 and Market Capitalization of >$0.5 billion) that trades on the NYSE.
  • Cannot duplicate someone's exact 2 picks, only 1 allowed.
  • State Long or Short in your post.
  • 1 ETF allowed (no leveraged 2x, 3x ETF's)
  • No indexes or pinks/OTCBB allowed.
  • Give a brief rationale for both picks.

Thank you. :)

Also just a quick heads up in here but I have just un-pinned our current week's challenge thread to make room for next week's thread, so if any of you guys are looking around for this current week's thread please see the thread link posted below here!-

CLICK HERE FOR THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE THREAD!

You guys will notice that I am getting a super early start to next week's challenge thread. The reason I am putting this thread up today is so it gives everyone an opportunity to see this thread and chime in with their 2 picks before heading off for the weekend. Typically I like to have this thread posted up on Saturday's, but I noticed that not many people submit their picks simply because most people don't check in to Reddit on the weekends. So, to sort of resolve this issue here I will just be posting this thread up on every Thursday or Friday. We will see if this does improve the participation on here.

ONE MORE THING!

Also, I'm just trying out something entirely new & different here at r/StockMarket.

Some of you might already be familiar with this game. It's not really "new" and has been around for a while ... it's just that I've never bothered setting one up, or running it here. In a nutshell this is simply virtual trading in the form of a competition with other traders.

CLICK HERE for a brief description.

All participants will be starting off with $5,000 with commissions rates set at $5.00 per trade.

This was about as real world trading as I could find in the form a contest.

All that you folks will need to do is to register your user handle on MarketWatch.com

It's really pretty quick and easy. Should take you folks no more than a minute or so.

Once you have completed that process you can join up the challenge right here:

CLICK HERE TO JOIN NEXT WEEK'S R/STOCKMARKET PORTFOLIO CHALLENGE!

You simply just need to click on the orange "JOIN NOW!" button on that page to join next week's challenge.

It would be great to get a few of you joining up in our first ever portfolio challenge here at r/StockMarket.

Let me know here once you guys have signed in and joined the game.

GLTA and looking forward to seeing some great picks posted in here from you guys here at r/StockMarket for next week! :)

Confusion between technicals and outlook.

I bought into this penny stock years ago and held on to it with the hopes that one day graphene will make me rich. (someone asked me, so you're investing in carbon?!)

These two news items recently came out. One gave me hope. The other made me flush.

I don't have a specific question. I'm just wondering if someone knowledgeable might breifly "speak to it" regarding this dichotomy.

Trouble with Earnings Reports

Recently, I've been targeting companies that are undervalued with earning reports coming up, the last three of which have outperformed expectations but still left me in the red when the market opens the next day. Is it just because of a bad market or am I getting beat by something that I overlooked? Last one was VIAV, which hasn't panned out but looks terrible now.

SeaWorld Options

Throwing caution to the wind, caught a decent move to the short side in seaworld last week. Large bid stepped in and won't let the stock go down any further. I think we could be at a potential inflection point as it relates to $SEAS squeezing. You better believe this is a level where a lot of the big funds who've been short for the last few months / years might consider covering if we don't get any rocky action back into the low 10's and 11's.

Thought I'd let y'all know :)

Thoughts on binary ETF trading; TQQQ and SQQQ?

Usually from market sentiment, index futures, and discussion groups, you can get a pretty good idea what an index like the NASDAQ 100 will do the following day. What's your opinion on constantly trading ETFs like TQQQ and SQQQ on a regular basis?
