$DRYS more to come?

Today there was a 21% raise after last week's gigantic spike. Is there a possible aftershock coming?

P.s. I'm pretty new to trading...explanations will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Canadian portfolio tracking app. What do you want to see?

Hi guys, hopefully this isn't breaking any rules here but I thought I'd post anyway. As a Canadian day trader/investor, it's pretty hard to find a decent app that can track your portfolio. There are very few apps that will let you track the TSX, and aside from Yahoo Finance they're all pretty much unusable. So, together with a friend of mine, I've been working on a simple app (with beautiful UI) that will do just that. The reason I am here is to see if any of you would be interested in such a platform. Here is the overview of features that are planned for the first release: Input your holdings (price paid, number of shares, date) Or import your trades from Questrade as you make them Sort your holdings into different categories (support for multiple portfolios) Market data for the most popular exchanges Quick overview of your portfolio (daily/total gain/loss in both % and $) Graph your profits and losses over time Tap a stock to see all relevant market info Custom watchlists Push notifications when a starred stock on your watch list hits a certain price point (user customizable) Keep an eye out on S&P, DOW, NASDAQ as a whole We will be using the Questrade API, and currently working to become an official partner app sometime in the future. So, that's the short of it. Let me know if there is any interest, or if you guys would like to see any other feature added before its release. Happy trading!

$MACK - Steady Fall Even in Light of Upgrade

So I bought in on MACK at $5.00 right as a lot of good news regarding their drug Onivyde was popping up. A week or so later it topped off at around 6.80 and has been decreasing steadily for about a week now to its current ~$5.80. It was just upgraded last night by the vetr crowd from a sell (2) to a strong buy (5) yet it continued to fall today. It's right on the cusp of the limit I wanted to get out at, but I originally intended to long it to ~$10.00 based off of its previous high. Only good news has come out about them in the past few weeks, but I'm just wondering if this can simply be chalked up to the classic pharma volatility or if there's something I'm not hearing about.

Advice on making stock screens?

I've been trading a couple of years and I've managed to beat the total stock market index (in various flavors mostly starting with a V) by sector trading and what you'd call macro, with some dabbleing in options for risky picks and income lately. I haven't done tremendously well, but I do well enough to justify continuing.

What I'm having trouble with is identifying good stocks to trade. That is screening stocks. I'm wondering if anyone here who does this better than I do could give me some pointers on creating effective stock screens/identifying opportunities? What stock screens do you use?

Anyway, I mostly use TDAmeritrade and Vanguard (V for long-term stuff, TDA for risk money), but am willing to use other web-based tools to create stock screeners.

This is the most amazing little stock. The company has a tiger by the tail. It has been green lighted for Phase III Clinical Trials for their kidney (more specifically Lupus Nephritis) drug Voclosporin which has, so far, demonstrated complete remission in an amazing percentages of cases.

The stock has been wrongfully punished due to some predictable deaths in phase II trials. Surprise, kidney disease kills people... ಠ_ಠ ...

At any rate, the stock is at a waaaaay undervalued 2.90 ... Check it out.

App for traders

Just wondering would any traders here be interested in a mobile app that allows you to input your trades and what type of trade it was and then be able to track your performance. Also there'd be a feature that allows you to compare your performance depending on the type of trade. For example a breakout long vs a breakdown short. In addition, there'd be a calculator that tells you how many shares to buy/short depending on your risk and stop.

My first plan

I'm 22 years old, fit, daily excersize, healthy diet, but I don't work. I get food stamps, collect SSI and I'm yearning to be a big shot so I've come to the stock market for some help. Now, to make some perspective clear, I'm starting off with very small gains of 5%, 8% maybe per a stock. I see myself as being fairly intelligent and having so much unused time on my hands I could probably make the stock market work well for me. I get SSI and food stamps- my check is 733 but after my rent and cost of living my remaining cash on hand is 180- thats why 5-10% gains on low-cost stocks are good for me. My plan is to invest 20-30 a month, and if someone on craigs list responds to my ad for under the table landscaping, I'll take $5 of every $10 I make and invest it into stocks as well which means hundreds invested in stocks every month.

The way I see it, theres a few trends that I can positively say will certainly give me a return on my investment. This is something that can make me use my brain, understand how all this civilization works- pick up a magazine at win-dixie and scroll through, see what companies and what names keep popping up in the magazines over a period of months- do online research and see the worth of their stocks. Judge and weigh according to my understanding.

I love history and psychology and to me this is sort of a path to making it a field of expertise. So to those experienced stock holders, I've already opened my account with Tradescott and on check day I'm running to their office and I want a detailed in-depth sit-down with these stockholder firm people and hopefully find the right council for this.

[Weekly Charting] I'll analyze the top 10 stock tickers posted in the comments and make a video with my analysis

I'm a swing/day trader and will do some short term chart/fundamental analysis on the top 10 tickers posted here. I might throw in some thoughts longer term but mostly you should assume a shorter term trade (days to weeks).

If you want a chart analyzed respond with the following (REQUIRED):

  1. Ticker
  2. Long or short (i.e. do you think it will go up or down)

Rules (READ THESE AND FOLLOW THEM):

  1. ONE idea per post (otherwise we don't know which is being upvoted) Feel free to make multiple posts though...try to keep it to 2 or 3 if possible so we get a good variety

  2. No OTC or foreign companies.

  3. No options, futures, forex, etc. Equities only.

  4. If you don't post both a ticker AND a direction (long/short) I can't analyze it

  5. If you see one you want analyzed already posted, upvote it.

  6. If you miss the thread but still want a ticker analyzed, look for the YouTube link and post your idea in the YouTube comments. I'll respond there via text!

I'll do the top 10 most upvoted or the 10 most common that follow all the rules. If there are ties I'll do them based on who posted the earliest.

I'll edit the post and post the video at the top in bold after I let the thread run for a while and collect tickers!

Have fun!

What makes you invest in stocks?

I've been working on a project about the psychology of the stock market. I'm looking at the behavior of different investors in the market. Each investor has his unique ideas about what makes a stock a good stock, but I'm looking more towards trends among similar investors and if there are any relationships to be found.

What things do you look for when buying stocks? What makes you sell? What keeps you from holding, buying, selling?

All help is greatly appreciated! Leave a short description on how you manage your portfolio if you want to help....Discuss with others.

This post is based on the survey I am trying to put together to get a better idea of what factors I need to be looking at for my research. You can find that survey here: http://ift.tt/2fiGAFB

SHORT EUR/$ рublished 2 month ago

Good morning traders,

I trust you are all enjoying your time off, whilst I have some time I decided to do another eur/$ chart, as most of you already know my incredible bearish outlook on the pair still stands;

The bearish break looks similar to that found in August 2015 suggesting a move toward the trend lows at 1.052xx

The ECB appears to be on hold for now putting further focus on a fiscal response to support growth. If they do ease further then the ECB will find it increasingly difficult to weaken their currency so all eyes are on the fed ahead of FOMC on wednesday. The risk to this trade is the FED sounding more dovish and thus weakening the USD and the chances of further hikes in 2017.

Your support by liking and commenting is much appreciated!

Betting on Yellen

I entered a new trade on Tuesday of long SPX 2000 Jan 20 2017 puts at 6.20.

I have a couple reasons for doing this:

  • record highs on thin volume and terrible breadth don't look good.

  • I think it's likely that the Fed will take high market prices as blessing the implied rate hike in December. This is the same story as December 2015. If that happens, I expect a similar market drop as in January 2016.

  • I think a minor black swan event is possible if Yellen decides to stick it to Trump and raise rates by 50 bps or greater. I don't think this is likely, but there I rate the possibility as more than zero. Maybe 3% probability. If it happens, the market will see a big move to the downside.

  • I think it's also possible we will see a buy-the-rumor-sell-the-fact on Trump's inauguration. If that happens we'll see selling into inauguration day (Jan 20).

Stop loss is 3.20

Leg 1 profit taking is 9.20, and trailing stops from there on.

Normally I sell short-dated options and ride theta decay, but with market where it is I figured some speculation on delta and gamma were worth it.

Investing Survey

I'm researching the behavior of investors in the stock market. To see where to begin with my research I have created a survey that will hopefully help me see how one may respond to different situations one may face through an investment. The survey may take a while if done thoroughly. Please take it seriously if you choose to respond. Thanks to everyone for participating. (There is a feedback question at the end please respond to it if you have any questions or comments.)

Is OPEC full of shit?

What's the likelihood that they'll actually freeze production? The current rally doesn't make sense to me.

1) Saudi issuing sovereign debt for cash flow, so what do they care. Why would they give up market share?

2) USD at 12 year high, so today's bbl is actually worth more than $50 based on USD pre-Trump.

3) Iran is nowhere near pre sanction output levels and will continue to fight with saudi for European market share.

4) high usd means more rubles for Russia to finance fiscal responsibilities. Therefore prices/bbl don't need to be that high to finance same levels of gov spending.

5) breakevens are ~50$ or less for US shale. With trump in power, I'm sure the conditions will be there for breakevens to decrease even further. Rig counts are guaranteed to jump when prices go up.

Am I underestimating the fiscal strain experienced by petrocountries? Regardless, the price ceiling is us shale breakeven costs due to being the swing producer and the binary ON/OFF nature of shale rigs.

Am I wrong?

what does a good relationship with Russia mean for the oil industry?

If Trump tears up the Iran deal and gets the US a good relationship with Russia it seems like oil will go back up due to a sudden decrease in crude oil. Does anyone else share similar thoughts? Or am I speaking out of my ass on this one.

Have fun!

Noob question, but how does buying shares in a company allow you to share in its future profits?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to work out what the point of buying stocks is.

When a company issues new shares, it receives money for them. It can use this money to invest in itself. But after the company sells these shares, any change in the price of the shares would have no change on how much money the company has.

Similarly, regardless of whether or not a company is performing well, the price of its shares can go up or down depending on market forces. I understand that market forces tend to track a company's profits (i.e. the higher a company's profits, the higher its share price), but WHY?

How does buying shares allow you to share in the future profits of a company? Assuming that a company doesn't pay dividends, the only way you can see a positive return is if you sell your shares at an increased price. But what does this have to do with a company's profits?

I know this is probably really dumb but I must be missing something!

Thank you!

Where to get stock data?

Back in the day they used to print closing prices, volume, daily high and low, for every stock in NASDAQ and Dow Jones along with a section on options. Is there any place I can download this data daily? I googled and googled and all it returns are sites selling software and sites that allow me to query sets of stocks. That doesn't work. I need what used to be printed in the newspaper but in some kind of electronic format. Can someone point me in the right direction?

R Squared

Hey guys, I am essentially wondering how to calculate R Squared for a portfolio in excel. Obviously actually doing that isn't hard, but what I can't seem to figure out is the variables. In terms of the portfolio and calculating everything, what am I making my x's and y's? I assume once I have those I just follow through as though you would calculate R squared with normal data points. For the benchmark I would be using the S&P (I realize I could use ETFs to model it, but its for a competition and you can't use them) Any help would be great. Thanks!

Pump and dump

It is semi-legal way to influence the price the your stock. When other people start buying, you sell at profit. It's a scam but somehow people still get away with it.

Gilead, Buy HIV, Get Hepatitis C for Free

A few months ago I wrote a long article about Gilead that he wanted to title “Gilead: Buy Hepatitis C, Get AIDS for free”. Today I want to flip that title backwards and call it “Gilead, Buy HIV, Get Hepatitis C for Free.”

We spent a lot of time this quarter talking to our colleagues in the investment industry, soliciting “the other side” argument for Gilead, trying to understand what we are missing about this stock. As we suspected most people cannot overcome the confluence of two business models inside one company: Gilead’s growing, annuity-like HIV business and the shrinking and ultimately finite Hep C business.

Let’s look at the HIV business first. It is a stable business that is growing about 6-8% a year in the developed markets: unfortunately, 4% more people get infected with HIV every year, and prices go up 2-4% a year. This business has substantial operational leverage (costs don’t grow as fast as revenues), thus 6-8% revenue growth should bring 8-10% earnings growth. Twenty years ago, AIDS was a death sentence; today it is an inconvenience. A person infected with AIDS today has a similar lifespan as a healthy person, but unfortunately for them (fortunately for GILD’s investors) they have to keep taking GILD’s medicine for the rest of their lives.

Gilead has several HIV drugs, which fall into one of two groups: TDF (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate)-based and TAF (tenofovir alafenamide)-based. Patents for TDF-based drugs expire over the next couple years; however, GILD recently came out with TAF drugs. They are as effective as TDF drugs but have a fraction of the toxicity – there are fewer signs of kidney injury and decreases in bone density. The market is slightly skittish about GILD’s ability to transition patients from TDF drugs to TAF drugs – we are not concerned.

Last year, we observed how a pharmaceutical company was able to successfully extend the life of its patents by shifting patients from a once a day regimen to a three times a week regimen of the same (chemically identical, just higher-dosage) compound. If pharmaceutical companies were able to pull off this farce and get insurance companies to pay for it, we have not doubt that Gilead will be able to convince governments and insurance companies to pay for new, much superior medicine. Patents for the company’s TAF-based drugs expire in 2030.

We took Gilead’s HIV revenues, subtracted all HIV-related costs of goods sold and all of the company’s R&D and sales expenses, and arrived at 2017 HIV earnings of close to $4.50. A high-quality business with very high recurrence of revenue that is growing 8-10% should trade at 15-17 times earnings or $67-76 a share – basically Gilead’s current stock price.

Valuing Gilead’s hepatitis C business is a bit trickier. With every patient cured the market declines by one patient. Thankfully for society’s sake, hepatitis C is not a growing market (at least in developed countries). Our estimate of the value of the hepatitis C business is somewhere between $70 to $120 per share, depending on pricing and number of patients cured.

Also, even though we expensed GILD’s R&D when we arrived at the company’s HIV earnings, we have not given GILD any benefit for future drugs that $3 billion spent annually will deliver in the future.

The market has a hard time digesting a stock whose overall earnings may decline from $13 a share in 2015 to $11, maybe even $10, over the next year or two. In many respects Gilead reminds us of Apple. Just like Apple, whose products can fit on one table, the bulk of Gilead’s revenue comes from a handful of products.

Just like Apple, whose stock was punished when iPhone sales declined in 2016 because they were up 50% in the previous year (and thus stole sales from 2016 and 2017), Gilead’s initial sales of Hep C drugs benefited from incredible pent-up demand from sick people who waited years for this miracle drug. Gilead over earned in 2015, and today its earnings power is closer to $11 a share, not $13. As we continued in our attempts to kill GILD’s business during the quarter, we simply failed to do so.

What causes massive gains in seemingly little known companies overnight?

Hi all, Been dabbling in the investing world and I've been mystified by this phenomenon. I see companies in certain subreddits or in top gainers that go up by 200-300% over a day or two. I saw some good news for these companies but is most news worth essentially tripling the perceived value of the company?

Interested in everyone's thoughts - thank you!

SHORT AUDUSD SHORT on the DAILY

Mainly technical analysis here, but I think the fundamentals support a break to the downside. I have an order in to short if it drops on opening with stops back above the channel support and the SMA 50, with limits set just above lines of support from earlier in the year. I'm hoping LIMIT 1 will be realised quite quickly, and looking to buy back 50% there, with LIMIT 2 with the other 50% of my position being a potential super score (in my books!) lower down. AUDUSD 0.05% 's past performance suggests that if it tanks, it could fall down to that bottom line quite quickly. In my view, the fundamentals might help to accelerate the bears.

These are only my opinions. Comments, questions and suggestions are very welcome!

Ponzi scheme could crash - US30 - all markets

Panic and doom are transformed overnight by relief, hope and greed - in what is widely known as the biggest Ponzi scheme in the history of the world. Google -2.90% and YouTube are your friends.

This is not a prediction - it is an expectation based on hard facts that are out there.

Yes - the markets are always right as I hold no power over the future. But there is a thing called reality and even markets have to obey it!

Suggest a paper trading account

Hi all!

I would like to get started trading US equities and options. I have been looking for paper trading accounts, and am debating which is the best one. I know TD Ameritrade and Interactive Brokers has one. I feel like the IB GUI is not that fluid. TD Ameritrade requires a deposit to set up a paper trading account. I have an IRA with Fidelity, but as I understand they don't have a paper trading account.

Can you guys recommend me a paper trading app? Thanks.
