r/StockMarket Weekly Stock Picking Contest for the Week of (10/3 - 10/7) is now OPEN for PICKS!

r/StockMarket Stock Picking Challenge for the Week of (10/3 - 10/7)

PLEASE READ THESE RULES THOROUGHLY BEFORE POSTING UP YOUR PICKS!

SEE RECENT NEW RULE CHANGE #7 AT THE BOTTOM -- RATIONALE NOW A REQUIREMENT!!!

If you want to be eligible to participate in this week's contest here is what you need to do (REQUIRED!):

  • 1.) Post 2 tickers (ex. AAPL = Apple) but YOU MUST pick 2 not just 1 or else I will not add you to our list of contestants!
  • 2.) Choose either Long or Short for each ticker (Obviously LONG - if you think it will go up ... or SHORT - if you think it will go down this week...)
  • 3.) Both of your picks MUST each be at least $2 at the very minimum!

Contest Rules (READ THESE AND FOLLOW THEM!):

  • 1.) No OTC or Foreign companies.
  • 2.) No Options, Futures, Forex, stuff like that... Equities ONLY!
  • 3.) If you don't post both the ticker AND the direction (LONG/SHORT) you won't be added to the list of contestants for this week's stock picking challenge!
  • 4.) You cannot duplicate someone's exact play! For example- If someone picks AAPL - Long and BAC - Long first then you can only pick AAPL - Short and BAC - Long or AAPL - Long and BAC - Short <-- you may only duplicate 1 pick but not BOTH! This is a first come, first serve basis here.
  • 5.) Picks absolutely MUST be posted in here before the 9:30AM eastern cash market open on Monday morning!
  • 6.) You are only allowed 1 leveraged ETF. If you choose two, the second of the two does not count and is still up for grabs. If incorrect picks go un-noticed, you risk your position being forfeited! (These are the 2x/3x ETF's)
  • 7.) RATIONALE - You MUST post up a rationale (either technical or fundamental) for both of your picks or you will NOT be entered into this week's contest!
  • 8.) Please DO NOT EDIT your picks!! If you absolutely must choose another pick, please use a separate post and state that you are changing your original pick to something else!

I will post up the live contest spreadsheet a little after the market closes on Monday with everyone's picks posted, this will include your opening prices, current prices, P&L, & Total ROI for each of your picks, as well as an overall total ROI and an overall average ROI between 2 of your picks, and that will be what we will use to total up both of your 2 picks!

In addition, since we're doing this contest on Reddit, no one will be able to close out their picks during the trading week... Everyone's picks will close at Friday's close! And also everyone's picks will start at Monday's opening prices.

Good luck to everyone in here! Let's see who can deliver the 2 best picks for this week and take bragging rights as the best stock picker of the week here at r/StockMarket! :)

If you have any questions about anything feel free to fire away on this thread...

Also, for anyone looking around for our past weekly contest threads & results here they are!:

Here was our 2nd weekly contest thread & results on r/StockMarket:

Here was our 3rd weekly contest thread & results on r/StockMarket:

Again please try to get those 2 picks in before the 9:30am EST market open on Monday! Ready, set, GO!!!

I'm getting another super early start to next week's contest so let's try to ramp it up on the participation this week!! :D

Have fun all and GLTA! :)

Question About Markets.com £25 Bonus No Deposit Required

I signed up to there, I don't have enough for the minimum deposit yet but they gave me £25 "real money" to get started. I've made it into about £50 now by buying stocks that I see keep swaying between negative/positive change and buy them just when they go low. This has worked out for me so far.

So my question is: If I deposit the minimum amount £100, could I withdraw that on top of the other £50 I made?

So I've been following this page for a bit and out of curiosity, who here actually makes money with the stock market? I read all the books, did my research and think I want to try and buy.. If I'm good enough can I really save for later days?

Top Tech Stocks In Q3: Apple, Amazon, Google, Intel; Telcos Lag

For the third quarter it was all information technology, as the big names -- Apple, Alphabet, Intel, Microsoft (MSFT) -- all posted double-digit gains. And Amazon, which is not a tech issue but has it as a key element of its business, is up 15.9% for the quarter," S&P analyst Howard Silverblatt told IBD, with one session still left in the quarter.

Apple's stock was up 17.3% in Q3 as of Thursday's close and 6.6% for the year. Apple stock has bounced back on views iPhone 7 demand could surpass low expectations, but it's still mediocre in the ratings, with a so-so Composite Rating of 56 and equally mediocre Relative Strength Rating of 65. I checked the last 25 transactions on this stock KUB cause its price is very stationary, and I noticed this merchant 007 consistently dealing with this stock. What gets me curios is how he keeps buying at 0.02 and selling at 0.02, which means 0 profit minus just commission fees.

So, what effect does this have when manipulating stock price? What is he trying to pull?

Like see these last 4 transactions?

The same guy bought at 0.02 twice, then he sold at 0.02 twice 20 minutes later. Out of the last 25 transactions, this merchant 007 TD Securities was involved 10 of them as either seller or buyer (and always at 0.02). What is this?

It is bad for me because the stock price won't rise, but how is it good for him when putting in this much efforts manipulating?

Hypothetically speaking, any legal implications for Wang Jianlin?

Recently Wang Jianlin mentioned that the real estate market in China is a bubble. http://ift.tt/2d67emR

Hypothetically speaking, if he had shorted the real estate market before conducting the interview, would he be breaking any security laws in China? In addition, lets say someone in the US who is a real estate mogul made the same comments about US's real estate market after shorting that market, would there be any implications in the US?

Brands are Dead!

What kind of Ads do you see on Facebook/Instagram?

Over the past few years Facebook has exploded with advertisements from upstart companies that offer monthly deliveries of consumer goods (think dollar shave club) or clothing and other consumer/household goods. They tend to specialize in one or two products and all claim to be of premium quality. The retail industry calls them called "Direct to Consumer" brands. Over the last few months I've been wondering if most of these "boutique" companies will burn through their cash and go out of business or if they are actually taking market share away from brand name retailers. I came across this article today: http://ift.tt/2cL7ftt

Companies like Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and Google are creating ever more effective ways to gauge advertising effectiveness and consumer engagement - which is great for both the advertisers and their customers - the upstart retailers. This results in an environment where it is easier than ever for new companies to reach their target audience and project sales to maximize their use of cash while minimizing lead time.

Branding was important in the pre-internet era as the consumer looked for products they could trust. Before the internet, news and information spread more slowly which was an advantage to companies that had built up a trusted brand. As the internet and targeted advertisements allows for new companies to gain credibility and reach their target audience more cheaply, quickly and effectively than ever before, it will be harder and harder for the big brands to justify their higher price points. This will lead to a reduction in margins and weaken the value of building a brand. New upstarts with no physical footprint and low costs will outperform.

Lululemon is a company that has started at an interesting time in this shift in retail. They hit the nail on the head succeeding in the retail environment through branding a lifestyle over a product branding to gain an edge - They preach "Mindfulness". I don't think it will last simply because of the speed at which new companies can match quality and beat on price.

Maybe I'm nuts, but this is how I see the future 10-15 years from now.

There are too many companies to name, but I think many of the high p/e brand name companies are in trouble. I'm especially bearish on the first two companies on the list and companies like them.

In order of my opinion from most to least affected companies:

1) VFC: (The North Face, Vans, Timberland, Kipling, Napapijri, Jansport, Reef, Smartwool, Eastpak, lucy, and Eagle Creek brands) Forward P/E 22

2) LB (L Brands - Victoria’s Secret, Pink, Bath & Body Works, La Senza, Henri Bendel, C.O. Bigelow, White Barn Candle ): Forward P/E 17.3

3) GPS (Gap - Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta, and Intermix brands.) Forward PE 12.43

4) KORS (Michael Kor's) Forward P/E 10

5) JWN (Nordstrom): Forward P/E 17.2

6) COH (Coach): Forward P/E 14.83

7) RL (Ralph Lauren): Forward P/E 16.63

8) LULU (LuluLemon): Forward P/E 25.3

9) UA (Under Armor): Forward P/E 50.49

10) NKE (Nike) Forward P/E 19.36

Not saying you can short them now, but I think this is a huge macro-trend in retail that is here. I wouldn't hold for the long term. Obviously people have picked up on this because most of these companies have been crushed recently. Making this connection with the trend I've seen in advertising solidifies the trend for me. The main counter argument to this thesis is that these companies under the right management could use their cash to minimize their physical footprint and succeed in online retailing, but it would be at a much slower rate than new companies can pop up.

I'd love to hear counterarguments because I see some of these companies going to zero in the next decade!

tl;dr Your loss!

What's the avg yearly ROI of an active investor average yearly return?

I invest mostly in tech stocks, and got my investment increased by +18% over the past year, which, as a ROI, is pretty good for me given I've spent only a few hours on this, and pretty much don't know what I'm doing -- I've made lots of mistakes, for example shorting AMD and NVIDIA right before they increase 300%...

So, my question is what's a good yearly ROI for a full-time stock mkt investors/traders? Am I just lucky or is 18% the norm?

Thoughts on BioTech Picks

Hey everyone, long time lurker here. I work in the Wealth Management industry as a stock picker, but I don't usually involve myself with biotech pharmaceuticals. I've been playing around lately by monitoring the FDA review calendar, and buying equities a few days before they release whether or not the drug makes it to the next testing stage. Most of these things either hit 100 or 0 after the big releases, so its fun, especially when they start at $1.5 a pop. Anyway, this Friday is a big day for a lot of drugs and I was wondering what you guys thought about the following tickers:

DPRX GNCA VRTX ESPR

I don't usually waste my time running analyses on these companies, because their financials are usually extremely weak due to small company size, and their reports discuss scientific jargon that's way above my head; this is mostly for fun. Plus, fundamentals rarely matter when it comes down to the spike after new news enters the market and is priced into the stock.

Even if you don't have any thoughts on these equities, I would love to just prompt a discussion.

I feel like I don't have to say this, but this is all for my personal portfolio, not for anything I would submit to my boss (who does think what I am doing is a fun game to play).

Thanks guys.

Sell my portfolio before the election?

Hi all, I'm a fairly new investor, took a course, read a few books, and mostly buy blue chip, dividend paying stocks. I'm feeling good about my portfolio right now, but am worried about the American election (I'm canadian....I have some US stocks (AAPL/SBUX) and some stock that are cross listed (SHOP). Most of my blue chips are canadian (RY/L/MFC/ BCE) and I have some index funds too.

My question is this: I'm up about 12% over the last year and a half, and I'm going to be going to law school in a year, and will need some of that money. I'm worried about a drop if Trump gets elected, or a market correction. Should I sell now, take my earnings and play it safe, or keep my money in my investments? If I do sell, should I sell everything, or only the things I'm up on (I'm down on a few things that I'm still a believer in).

Any advice would be happily considered! Thanks friends!

Warning: $RGSE Real Goods Solar - pump & dump?

$RGSE Real Goods Solar has 2 million shares outstanding, and today it traded over 44 million shares. So every share of the company was traded an average of 22 times. The stock was up over 100% to $5.59.

Buyer beware: The company has recently issued various warrants, convertible preferred stock, and senor secured convertible notes. The preferreds started to be converted into common shares on Monday (9/26). They can convert the shares for 87.5% of the previous 5 days prices and then immediately sell the shares, so be set to see this stock decline about 10% a week indefinitely. They have already gone from having 1.2 million shares outstanding to having 2.0 million shares outstanding in just 2 days.

The senor secured convertible notes start to be converted into common shares on Oct 1. These notes are convertible into shares at 85% of yesterday's prices. So an instant 15% profit for the noteholders.

They are expecting such a massive flood of new shares, that they have provided a web page where they promise to update (daily) the number of shares outstanding: http://ift.tt/2djvD2x

This appears to be a classic case of death spiral financing. Stay away.

Please Help Me to Remember a Book

Hello, a few years ago, I read a book about Black Monday. I think it was written in the 90s by an economist. Mostly it was about the decades of prosperity and excess that led to that day. It was basically history, but written very well and simple enough for the layman. Thanks for helping out.

Market Forecast for Week of 9/25/16 .:. Posted 5PM ET (before futures open) and covers market events, SPY, GC, CL, and NG including watchlist

Hey all, below are some technical analyses for the upcoming week. It takes hours of work to go this far into detail so I hope you guys find a good bit of use out of it. There are charts involved so I'll post the link that includes them at the bottom.

Market Summary

The week past we saw reversion in a big way. The Fed kept the price actions returning toward unchanged for the week into the even, then had a nice rally afterward and gave it back the next two days in trading. The markets are starting to show interesting signs of volatility and seem to be making a case that they won't be making up their mind just yet. Whenever Volatility rises, which we saw two weeks ago, it gets absolutely collapsed by trading. So the good news here is that there's still plenty of opportunity on the vol trade both long and short. It's been a slow two month buildup, but we're feeling like the ATM premium sale that we advertised is going to come in over the next week or two. If vol collapses again this week it's going to be profit time on much of the straddles/iron flies...if vol expands and we get a move then we have other things to do and positions to put on and we'll all be happy. So then, how about next week?

Key Events for Next Week

Next week is quiet on the Fed front, most likely Yellen will go back into her Darth Vader style habitat to recoup and remove her helmet and breathing apparatus for a while. We 're guessing in November she'll return to shake out her voluminous robe sleeves and pronounce more inaction as if it were a decision. We assume her kitchen smells like saltine crackers and sprite--She doesn't strike me as a curry-wurst or lasagna person, we think those require too much commitment. So then, if the Chairperson can't save us from complacency, what will? This week we expect to see oil make up its mind about the move and we don't really see upside as a large problem there. The charts in oil are almost useless here so it's a good opportunity for a small directional trade. Gold and Silver could rally on market weakness this week but if we grind higher in the indices again we may get a good break that sends the miners (GDXJ) to hell where they belong.

SPX Overview

Last week we stated, “Heading into next week SPX does not look that great still. The MACYD is dry and the stochRSI is going sideways, both of the short term indicators are neutral. . . .The only thing that is bullish heading into next week is the support being shown. 2,120 is showing excellent support and that is also right where the 100 SMA (light blue) is resting.” Last week SPX trended better than we had anticipated, it is important to note however, the reversal came after the FED meeting. The type of news that is announced during the FED minutes is nothing that can be detected via technical analysis. What we did see was solid strength at 2,120 and the 100 SMA. After the fed announcement of no interest rate hikes we started to rally again making our way back toward 2,200, getting up to around 2,180. Heading into next week SPX is looking a bit better. I think we are still susceptible to red days. But for now we look slightly more bullish than bearish. The SMA’s still do not look too fantastic, which is why I think we can have selloff days however, the short term indicators look good. The MACYD is above the 0 line and sloping up and the stochRSI, after a red day, is still above the 80 line. The best thing to do right now is to play each weak day by day. September is historically bearish so despite the recent bull action this is something to keep in the back of our minds. Commodities (Technical Analysis):

Natural Gas, /NG

Last week we said, “Heading into next week Natural Gas still looks bullish. It is in the full Steph Curry pattern, the MACYD is above the 0 line and sloping up, and the stochRSI is in breakout mode. Next week look for a breakout over 3.00.” We have been overall bullish for NG for months now and yet again we see new highs. Heading into next week NG actually looks less bullish than usual. With the close under 3.00 and the short term indicators bearish, we may see a little more selloff. The stochRSI is heading towards 20 and the MACYD had a bearish cross. Overall natural gas still looks solid so this looks like a dip buy right now. A selloff in the early week followed by a recovery is what the charts are suggesting since we are still in the full Steph Curry pattern. Look for a breakout again on the close over 3.00 and a down trend on a close under the 13 SMA and 2.95.

Oil, /CL

Last week we said, “Heading into next week the indicators are sloppy. The MACYD is below the 0 line and the stochRSI is below the 20 line, this is bearish. However, both are sloping up. Another bearish aspect is the SMA’S, there is only support at the 200 (dark blue) and the faster SMA’s are sloping down. So overall oil is still slightly bearish.” Last week we saw the short term pop from the short term indicators sloping up however, since we knew we were overall bearish the denial was exactly where we expected. We had those trend lines already drawn in and as you can see the denial was right on point. Heading into next week the short term indicators look bearish, the MACYD is about to cross (please note it hasn’t just yet) and the stochRSI is running out of steam. Neither are fully bearish yet, but in combination with the downtrend line it doesn’t look bullish. The SMA’s are still ugly as they are all just clustered. While oil looks bearish it has also been showing incredible strength at 43.00. So even if there is a selloff unless we close under 43.00, that area has been a dip buy. A bullish move would be over the trend line, which would be roughly 46.00.

Gold, /GC

Last week we said “Heading into next week the indicators do not look good still. The MACYD is below the 0 line and sloping down and the StochRSI is below the 20 line. The 13 SMA (green) and 20 SMA (orange) are sloping down as well. This shows that the short term indicators are still bearish.” Sure enough the short term indicators were bearish as we sold off at the start of the week. Gold then had a strong recovery after the FED minutes. We kind of new there would not be interest rate hikes, as most did, so we were able to remain overall bullish, “Gold does still have some stuff working in its favor, the most obvious are that the long term SMAs, 60 (red), 100 (light blue) and 200 (dark blue) are all still sloping up. The other thing working in its favor is the long term trend line. Gold has been holding this trend line well and it is testing it now.” Sure enough, even with the FED holding it down and then shooting it up, gold stayed right inside of the trend lines. The lows and highs both this week were nearly perfect plays off the trend lines we already had identified. Right now gold is squeezing. It is playing inside this tightening wedge and when it breaks in one direction, it will be a massive move. Overall the long term indicators look good still so we are leaning towards a bullish breakout.

Biotech / SPBIO

Last week we stated, “Heading into next week with the close over 5,000 SPBIO is looking solid. If you look there has however been really strong resistance around 5,050. So it could get denied there. Overall the MACYD is looking good as its over the 0 line, the stochRSI is in breakout mode and the SMA’s after Thursday are in the full Steph Curry mode. . .Next week if there is a close over 5,050 SPBIO will be ready for blast off.” Last week we actually never got a close over 5,050, it actually gapped over it on Monday and then like we said “blast off”. It ran hard all week long until giving some back on Friday. SPBIO outperformed our expectations even despite how bullish we were. Heading into next week we may see a selloff in the early week. You can see this week we got denied by the YTD highs. Not the 52 week highs, but the highs for 2016. Right now nothing has fully crossed but the MACYD and stochRSI both look extremely close, this could indicate a selloff at the start of the week. The overall indicators looking super bullish still is what suggests a dip buy. Look for support at 5,270, 5,220, and 5,140. A further breakout comes on the close over 5,360.

Buying Smerican stocks as a Canadian

What are the rules and regulations i should be considering?

Submitted September 26, 2016 at 12:27AM by Theworldsoncoffee http://ift.tt/2cEqBAd

Thoughts on these stocks?

Hey guys, I'm just hoping for a little bit of help and analysis on a few of my current positions that aren't panning out quite as I'd like. FSLR has been absolutely killing me in the last few weeks (I bought around $46), but has recently had a solid bounce but I'm wondering if there is more pain headed my way. RCL is my next one. I'm a little worried about tomorrow when Carnival reports, along with concerns from the Zika virus. This stock also had a recent pop after they announced a solid dividend increase. I bought around $80. I also have a very speculative marijuana based stock, TRTC. There is very little news on this one and I'm planning on holding it for a while. Finally I have CMG, who has popped in several occasions from ~400 (where I bought it) to $440, but has trended back down every time. I'm also interested in the international stock Tencent games. Clash Royale just hit the top of the play store based on a huge buying frenzy after the last patch. Tencent owns Riot (League of Legends), Supercell (Clash) , and Uber entertainment. I appear late to the tencent party though, and I'm kicking myself for not buying this sooner. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Short disclaimer: This is part of my High-Risk account. I have the majority of my money professionally managed.

How to track what stocks are bought next on S&P 500 index?

Hello, I've been doing quite a bit of reading and something I found rather interesting: Legal way to game the Market

I'm wondering, how exactly I would go about tracking what stocks are going to be bought next by S&P 500 indexes? As in, where can I see what they plan on buying next?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

[Weekly Charting] I'll analyze the top 10 stock tickers posted in the comments and make a video with my analysis

I'm a swing/day trader and will do some short term chart/fundamental analysis on the top 10 tickers posted here. I might throw in some thoughts longer term but mostly you should assume a shorter term trade (days to weeks).

If you want a chart analyzed respond with the following (REQUIRED):

  1. Ticker
  2. Long or short (i.e. do you think it will go up or down)

Rules (READ THESE AND FOLLOW THEM):

  1. ONE idea per post (otherwise we don't know which is being upvoted) Feel free to make multiple posts though...try to keep it to 2 or 3 if possible so we get a good variety

  2. No OTC or foreign companies.

  3. No options, futures, forex, etc. Equities only.

  4. If you don't post both a ticker AND a direction (long/short) I can't analyze it

  5. If you see one you want analyzed already posted, upvote it.

I'll do the top 10 most upvoted or the 10 most common that follow all the rules. If there are ties I'll do them based on who posted the earliest.

I'll post the video after I let the thread run for a while and collect tickers!

Have fun!

What happens to the stock market if Donald Trump wins?

Don't want to get into politics, want to keep this simple.

Usually the market favors Republicans. If a Republican wins, the stock market goes up (at least in the short-term). If a Democrat wins, the stock market goes down (at least in the short-term).

So how about this election? Who is the market favoring? What happens to the stock market if Donald Trump wins?

/r/StockMarket - I need your help with a project!

Hey everyone! I'm working on a project that requires me to split SEC filings into individual pages via their HTML. In order to do this I need to figure out all the different types of page break styles they use (there are a lot because there's no standardization for the filings). I've created a spreadsheet with a list of 5000+ symbols and their respective links to access a sample filing (a 10-Q). If anyone had programming knowledge and wants to help I think the community effort will be pretty quick. There is obviously no obligation to do it but if you want to help please feel free - I've given editing rights for column C so you can just view the source of the filing and paste the page break style in. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

Here's the spreadsheet: http://ift.tt/2cZYAnn

Thanks!

Selling and buying

So I'm very new to buying and selling. I have 9 shares of Starbucks stock, due to the program that Starbucks offers through Fidelity. Giving out stocks yearly to their employees. I let my stocks sit for a year and watched them go up and down and no I've realized I am not happy with them at all. I'd like to sell my stocks and purchase other stocks, or invest that money into some sort of short term investment or something.

Pretty much, I have no clue what I'm doing. I'm unhappy with my Starbucks stocks, I want to invest that money into something else, what do I do?

Is getting a company's Friday close for 52 weeks a good indicator of how well it's doing?

Hello, all! I'm very new to stocks, but I have a major project at work that I need to finish soon, so any help from you all would be great!

I work for a very big company. I'm assigned to create a info-graphic every month detailing all the "external data" that may be useful to top management (country's macro-economic indicators, commodity prices, etc.) It has to be very succinct as well, so I can only include the major indicators and trends that would be very helpful.

My boss declared he wanted to include a line graph tracking our company's trade price of its stocks for the past 1 year. While I was able to get that specific graph from our country's stock exchange website, I still need to convert that graph into numbers, and then graph it again myself (with a specific color scheme, aesthetics, etc.) to include into the infographic.

I'm not sure if it's feasible to get 365 data points (there's no table of data points, I literally have to move my cursor on the graph to see the price for each day). Plus, I only have 12 more hours before I have to finish this project. (to be clear, my boss only gave this instruction literally an hour ago)

So my question is is it acceptable to only track the trade price every Friday for the past 1 year (52 data points), instead of every day for the past 1 year (365 data points)? I chose Friday, cause my stock broker friend suggested it, but I forgot to ask why. I read about 'the Monday effect' and the 'Weekend effect', but is there any logic as to why the Friday price should be tracked on the graph? Will I lose any valuable information regarding how well the company's performance is doing, if I don't include the other 6 days? (remember this will just be on a small illustrative graph, as compared to the whole big picture)

As you can tell, I'm very new to do this, and any input at all would be fantastic. Thanks so much.

Weekly Stock Picking Contest for the Week of (9/26 - 9/30) is now OPEN for PICKS!

r/StockMarket Stock Picking Challenge for the Week of (9/26 - 9/30)

PLEASE READ THESE RULES THOROUGHLY BEFORE POSTING UP YOUR PICKS!

SEE NEW RULE CHANGE #7 AT THE BOTTOM -- RATIONALE NOW A REQUIREMENT!!

And here was our 3rd weekly contest thread & results on r/StockMarket:

Hope to see another great show of participation in here once again this week from everyone here at r/StockMarket!:)

Again please try to get those 2 picks in before the 9:30am EST market open on Monday! Ready, set, GO!!!

I'm getting a super early start to next week's contest so let's try to ramp it up on the participation this week!! :D

Have fun all and GLTA! :)

Is a volatility trade setting up???

Okay, so I am going to type my thought process, and then let you guys tell me why I am wrong...

The CBOE VIX is trading near 20 year lows. The graph looks like there is limited to no downside in play. The index is supposed to measure fear in the market. The fear is so far down because so many people are buying stocks vs bonds, which is based on the Fed's interest rate policy. Also, low unemployment, the recent run up in the market, so mixed but mostly positive economic news, and the thought that wall-streeters overwhelmingly feel Hillary will win. They have her as a an 80-20 (4-1) favorite, while most national polls have it at 48-40ish (1.2-1). Now, with the first presidential debate on Monday, couldn't a lot of this change in one night?? Now, I am not a Donald Trump fan, and I don't believe he can win this debate on policy, however debates in today's day an age aren't always won based on policy. His charisma and verbal attacks will surely be something Hillary has never encountered on a debate stage, and if she gets befuddled, and Trump actually looks good. I believe this could send shock ways through the nation. Even if he is just okay, that would be better than expected, and I believe it will cause Wall Street to temper their expectations. If there is a week or so where Trump starts to rally in the polls, people will start to think about his comments he has made about Fed Chair Yellen, and what economist have said about his economic plans. Add to that the ongoing outbreaks of riots in NC and other states and the overall turmoil in the country, I would say that it is a fair assumption that the VIX could break out. I opened up a small position with this in mind today. I bought the TVIX that is 2x leveraged ETN that is supposed to match the VIX. I have set a short stop loss around 16.50. But, are there any reasons that people feel that the VIX will remain this low?

I have had some success trading between the UWTI and DWTI and had previous success with UGAZ, but those were all commodity backed ETNs and I had a good profile of what I was actually buying. To be honest, this is the first time I have ever even thought about trading the VIX for any reason. But when i saw the chart, I just didn't think it made sense not too, as it appears a lot of these spikes can be anywhere from 50-250% in a short period of time. And with a catalyst right in front of me, I thought I could gamble a little....

So, good idea or bad idea?? You guys tell me.

How much do quarterly reports effect the stock price?

So due to some unfortunate pranks by my friends im in a deficit (fake money) and since the Marketwatch website isnt very good for trading several stocks a day (so I could quickly catch up, hopefully) I am relying on big companies (S&P 500) that I believe will have good quarterly revenue in the coming month or so. How much does the revenue report affect the stock price and do yall recommend any companies to invest in for about 1 month?

Hello,

I an a beginner planning on finally using real money to get experience in the market and learn in the real world. With a small portfolio I don't want to loose money on commissions and I've heard good things about Robin Hood, but is it actually legit? What are the cons - I'm not going to get screwed right?

Thanks!

Why not just buy stocks in as many S&P 500 listed companies as possible, then wait?

If the data is accurate, and despite a 10 year negative trend from about 2000 - 2010, the outlook of the index has been overwhelming good Macrotrends

So would a potential investment strategy be to buy up as many stocks as possible in various companies listed on the index, sit tight and fugedaboutit for a number of years?

As long as the 2000 - 2010 anomaly doesn't happen again during your hold (risky), then you're good, and it really doesn't matter when you bought, to make a return (if you can wait say 10 years minimum).

I'm a novice (can you tell?) and I know I'm oversimplifying things. I'm actually looking at opposing arguments to learn more.

Also why does that site say a 90 year history of the S&P 500, when Wikipedia says it was founded 59 years ago?

First year up 70% Get out?

This is my first year trading, and somehow I managed 70% gain.. Seeing as we have been on a bull run since 2009, I am considering cashing everything out, and putting a portion into SDOW. Considering 70% IMO is pretty darn good for my first year, would your opinion be to keep pushing it or call it quits until market bottoms/corrects again, and get a good position in for the next bull run?

Portfolio: NVDA AMD ATVI STNG

*Problem is I just see Oil at low rates, which is an opportunity IMO. And VR Gaming on the upswing, and people are realizing that GPU's are way faster than CPU's for certain/most things...

What are people thoughts on the future of health stocks or index funds that track Heath care stocks. There has been a lot of animosity towards how the current system is set up to allow exorbitant profits, example the current epipen issue. Do you think in the long term there is a political risk in holding these stocks over the next 10-20 years?

Is the Net Profit the last consequence?

In philosophy, there is a principle too much elementary: Doesn’t exist consequence without cause.

So, is the net profit the last consequence of ALL the business management? In other words, the net profit always will reflect if a company was administered good or bad? Is possible a company have operational problems or financial or legal or whatever and continue to making a positive and growing net profit? In other words, a company can have internal problems and these problems no reflect in the net profit?

Any way for a 16 y/o to start trading?

Hi I am 16 years old and have recently became interested in trying out the stock market. I really don't know too much so what would be a good idea to look at to get my bearings?

I would like to be able to do this through my phone if possible, just to make it easier. Also, is it true that you need to put a good amount in to get any worthwhile returns? I ask this because, as being 16, my cash isn't burning a hole in my pocket to be spent and I wouldn't like to put like $100 in and completely lose it because of a lack of prior knowledge. (Yes I do know that it isn't all profit but I'd kind of like to start small then work my way up to putting more and more in)

Am I naive to be waiting for a stock market drop before putting money towards an index fund?

I have about 12k in my Roth waiting to purchase FUSVX most likely.

I know I can't time the market..but can I be patient with it?

The fund was $50 in 2007, hit $24 in 2009 and is now sitting at $75. I guess my thought is to wait for a pullback and then throw it all in. Then in 2017 I'll have $5,500 more to buy on additional dips. Thoughts?

Best Picks for FOMC Decision

Hello everybody, I want to start some discussion regarding the best action plan to tomorrows FOMC meeting. While there is nothing we can do to predict what the actual result might be (hike / no hike) I think we should have some cash available for either scenario. If against the odds (20%) Yellen decided to go ahead and increase rates I would personally turn to Financial ETFs such as XLF, KBE, VFH and banks BAC, WFC, C... On the other hand if the hike were to be postponed I would expect GDX, AGQ and any precious metal ETF to bump up 5-10%. What do you guys think about this approach?

Biggest joke of a stock: GBSN

Grab the popcorn, sit back, and watch. I've been watching this one for awhile and I LOL literally every time I check it or listen in on conference calls. Multiple huge revers stock splits, consistent daily drop of 10-30%, total management compensation at almost as much as total revenue, "profitable by 2018." Drops 95% every few months.

Follow the management team after the company collapses, as they will move on to other ventures worth shorting.

If I had gambled $1000 when I started watching it two months ago, it would be worth less than $50 today.

Hedging is what made me Successful at Trading...

I first started by thinking I could beat the market day in and day out. Doesn't every trader start with this kind of cocky mindset? I was determined to show the world I was made of something. I remember my first trade which was $600 into GM call options the day before earnings. Keep in mind that at this point I only had $2400 to my name and was still in college. The next day that trade went way south and I figured out the concept of time decay. There is almost no way to win buying options on earnings unless the move exceeds the expected move along with time decay. Or the other way is to hedge with debit spreads.

After this period, I quit trading for about a month then decided to go back in. I day traded Apple for a little while gaining and losing small amounts. Then, one day after being in Sociology class my account was up $2000 at the market open. Once again, during this period I thought I had some sort of magical powers with the market that nobody else had.

The Finale...

I kept trading for a period of time and went into trades essentially with all or nothing. This was what killed me during this period of my trading career. I then quit trading for a year and remember the look on my parents faces when they heard me say I lost that much money.

My third and final period as a trader came when I discovered the site Tastytrade. I didn't have much money at the time so I just studied their videos. Over a few days, I was addicted to the site and studied atleast 5 videos a day wanting to learn everything. After the summer that year, I decided to open a TDAmeritrade account. Here is where the fun part comes. My strategy was to put on 2 call spreads and 2 put spreads a month. My account was $3000 at the time so it made sense to risk a small amount. Over the course of 8 months I only had 1 losing trade and was up 15% on the year.

Hedging was a significant portion to the success because I would play both sides of the market. I would also give myself an 84% probability of winning which helped provide a buffer for losing trades. Many traders lose because they think they will get rich quick. But once you can put those emotions aside and trade smart you will be successful.
