Wanting to start playing in stocks, any advice?

Hi, I am a 16 year old with a decent amount of cash on me and was wondering if It would be "okay" to play around in the stock market a bit. I don't mean to go crazy, just put in maybe $50-100 and see how it goes. Any advice? I am verrrry new to stocks and am still researching but figured here would be a good place to start. Thanks.

Gold and Oil Guru - http://ift.tt/2lw36eQ

About a year ago, I found myself thinking about how I can invest the hard earned money I've earned. As we have all done, naturally I decided to look into the stock market.

As you can imagine, its taken a lot of trial and error to figure out what is actually going on. After a year of researching different strategies, I finally came up with a strategy that is working for me trading gold and oil.

Check out the site below. I send out summary updates multiple times a week! Sign up form is in the individual post.

Plus500 Practice Investor

Hey guys,

I've been doing some investing with simulated stocks and what not in the app Plus500, in preparation for investing my own money some day.

Ive been doing it for about 3 months now and have made about 15 K profit from 25 K and im just curious about the legitimacy of the app. A few friends say that it exaggerates stocks and profit so I wanted to know what you guys thought.

Is it a legitimate and realistic way to practice investing?

If not, what is a better option for investment practice?

some advice, some opinions, some grading

hey guys,

new here. essentially i've been in the stock game for a little while. every 4 months i invest $2-3k into stocks and have so far done well for myself (the last thing i will do is brag but this is for the sake of discussion. if that was at all bragging to any of you)... i was extremely bullish on facebook & NVDA in the early going of both and have done well for myself in that regard. i invested in netflix before it split and that was a beneficial thing as well. i put some change into AmD and that's been OK. most recently i put a lot into FNMA. before i get a bit criticized for it, i was looking for a low risk high reward stock and it fit that profile. i bought a lot of the stock when it was at 25 cents and sold it when it hit $2.00 and now i've bought more at $2.75. i like that purchase but it's just to show what i'm working with (doesn't hurt the people Trump has appointed).... that said, it's around the time to invest 2k into a new stock. i know it's not large money but I'm looking for something I could sink my teeth into (hoping at or around $2.00 / share) i've either grown too lazy or i am over analyzing the market but have a very short and unsatisfying list. any tips or even suggestions to look into would be great. as a heads up i don't do oil or penny stocks. not the most compelling investment but again, any help is appreciated. cheers

*after reading a few more posts i've found it's not rude and or in any way impressive to share approximate amounts of portfolios. asides from a large sum that's left with UBS, i trade around ~$55k in my own personal account. this 2k investment I'm asking about could be bumped up to around $5-8k depending on my own research into suggestions. Thank you!!

JDST and JNUG

Selling all my holdings in JDST at market open, then buying a shit ton of JNUG right after.

With a speech from trump tomorrow night the next few days should be huge for these two, any thoughts?

WTF happened to gold mining this past week?

I recently moved a large portion of my portfolio into Gold Mining, apparently buying high right before a crash, like a sucker. I just checked this morning, and I'm down, down, down. Down. Like 30% down overnight.

I really underestimated risk here and the sheer speed of a potential dip. I'm used to 2-3% moves. It looks like I'm down around $730.00 in losses for this trade so far. "I ain't seen a beatin' like that since somebody stuck a banana in my pants and turned a monkey loose."

What's going on with JNUG / NUGT? Should I panic sell or have I already survived the worst of it? Or, is this the time to double down and buy more. For those who have been on the right side of this trade -- what tipped you off to making the smarter trade (eg. DUST is on the Up and up.)

Stock Analysis | Week 2

Last week I offered to review your tickers and give you a brief, mostly technical, analysis. It seemed to be heavily used, so I will be doing it again this week. However, I'm going to add some rules so that I can feel like I'm pushing you guys to do your best.

  1. No ETF/ETD. They're based on the underlying asset which it's pretty easy to google.

  2. Nothing under $2. Our Weekly Pick Challenge has this as a rule and for good reason, so I will carry it over here.

  3. This one is big Try your best to say why you want that ticker looked at. If you've already done DD on it, let us know what you found. To be successful you must do your DD, so I want to get people in the habit of thinking instead of just posting tickers and expecting work done for them.

Last week I just went in first come first serve order. This week I will go in the same order amongst those that try their best to follow those rules.

As always, GLTA!

Freshman at Harvard looking for possible summer learning opportunities

I'm a freshman and economics major at Harvard University who hails from a suburb on Long Island about an hour's drive away from New York City.

I am looking for a summer learning experience (be it an unofficial internship or shadowing) in any topic in a field related broadly to investment and finance.

I would imagine that this sub receives many of these requests already, but if you are offering any summer work opportunities (or know where to point me), where I could learn more about the work you do towards making professional financial decisions, I would be immensely grateful.

In terms of what I can offer your firm, I will be completely honest. I have no professional experience in industry, but I have learned the basics of investment research (basic modeling, key qualitative factors, financial statements, fundamental analysis, DCF, and company pitches). I am also a relentlessly hard worker, have some research experience under my belt, and would be willing to work for free or perform office related tasks and jobs in order to keep my place.

I can send my CV upon request.

Please let me know if you have any questions related to me, or my qualifications. Thanks for reading.

Where should I invest $65,000

I have $65,000 available to invest and I would like to invest so I am not tempted to spend. I already have $72,000 in rrsp, and will be continuing to max that out through work. I keep hearing about the impending doom in the stock market; bubble bursting, market correction worse than 2007, all that.

If I have this money now, it is better to sit on it as cash and then invest it all when if the market corrects? Wait 6 months and if nothing happens then invest? Or should I just invest now and ride it out?

I'm 29 years old. Planning to invest "aggressively" as I will not need the money for several years. I'm not really planning on individual stocks, but I currently have most of my current investments in ETFs.

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a good resource that I can use to find out how much percent a stock has changed since a specific date? For instance, I want to see how much percent AMD has been up since Jan 22nd. Most of the resources that I am using only show 1w,1m,3m. Thank you and looking forward to replies!

Why do Google Finance and Bloomberg report a different number for shares outstanding?

I would like to understand the discrepancy. Are they reporting a different thing, or is one of them wrong?

Company: Chin Hin Bhd (Malaysia)

  • Bloomberg calls it "shares outstanding" at 505.888mil

http://ift.tt/2lVtdPC

  • Google calls it "shares" at 474.289mil

http://ift.tt/2lHg8a3

  • Company's last quarter report uses the number 474.289mil (referring to it as weighted avg number of shares)

http://ift.tt/2lVA1gp

  • Company's website stock ticker uses 505.888mil ("no of shares issued")

http://ift.tt/2lH99y1

  • i3investor reports it as 505.888mil ("NOSH")

http://ift.tt/2lVqO7M

So there are two numbers being used. Which is correct? Why the discrepancy?

Opinions on shorting MCHP

Just hoping to get some opinions on shorting Microchip Technology. Their stock is up around a 100%, since mid-2012, while:

  • Their profitability is declining;

  • Margins are insanely tight;

  • Debt is rapidly increasing, while tangible assets are pretty much the same;

  • They will have to issue new bonds this year at a most likely higher coupon rate than their previous ones.

  • dividend payout ratio is unsustainable;

Not sure if I'm just missing something or if this actually is a good idea to short. Was thinking of buying some Jan 2018 puts.

EDIT: Formatting

Would it be a good idea to purchase shares in Lloyd's Bank?

I read this on The Economist Espresso app this morning:

HSBC reported a 62% fall in annual pre-tax profit, to $7.1bn. Royal Bank of Scotland, 72% government-owned, lost a worse-than-expected £7bn ($8.7bn), the ninth loss since taxpayers rescued it after the financial crisis. Lloyds, another British bailed-out bank, made £4.2bn, its best result since 2006. It is expected to return to full private ownership this year.>

Does that hint at the possibility of Lloyd's Bank share prices rising later this year? I'm a total beginner but thought I'd enquire after reading that anyway.

Thank you for any answers or any added discussion!

Need help understanding bonus issue of stocks

So let's say a company with 100 stocks, you have 10 so you get 10% ownership. Now let's say they issue 100 additional stocks to raise more capital...this means you now have 10/200 = 5% of the company. Your holdings are diluted and the stock price itself will fall.

Is my understanding of bonus issues of stocks correct as per above, or am I missing something?

What sector are you most bullish on for '17?

Hey All,

I am curious on what sectors the community is most bullish on for this year. I know a lot of people are bullish on materials, consumer staples and financials this year. Personally I am bullish on financials because of tax reform, rate hikes and deregulation. What sector are you most bullish on and why? Looking forward to your replies!

Will there be a significant stock market correction soon?

The last couple days I've been getting notifications from my yahoo finance app about how investors are worried and why we should start thinking there may be a market correction soon. Is there any evidence that suggests there could be one soon? I've got about 600 dollars in the stock market, and I'm considering pulling it out for a minute. Usually I take market crash predictions with a grain of salt, but I figure yahoo finance must know what they're talking about.

DJIA is soaring; Are you holding off on index funds/ETFs?

Since the DJIA continues to hit record highs, are you scaling back/halting the purchase of overall market or sector index funds given their temporarily high price (when going long)?

I'm a novice investor with money in a range of index funds and ETFs, and I've got some cash on hand sitting in my Vanguard money market settlement fund.

However, the high performance of the stock market lately has increased the price of my index funds and ETFs to nearly $20-$40 more per share as compared to when I initially purchased them a few months ago.

Is this a classic example of "buy low, sell high" in that I should hold off on the purchase of these index funds/ETFs until the market slows down a bit? A decline is inevitable, and I'd like to get in the habit of using good investment common sense and discipline, rather than buying into the hype of an expensive market.

Note: This is ignoring any day-trading, swing trading, or short principles. I have purchased shares of these funds with the intent to hold.

Thank you!

FIT and AAPL: great potential in the medical field

Wearable gadgets, smartphones, apps and cloud services... That's all that could greatly facilitate the work of doctors: to collect users' health data, to suggest possible diagnoses, to report the state of health etc.

I think Apple and FitBit have all the chances to become leaders in the developing of the medical software and to change the medical sphere as much as possible. What do you think? What other companies would do such things?

Stash for beginners

I see a lot of people asking how they should get started and it seems a lot of people in this community like robinhood because of its low commission fees (which I believe are none?), but why doesn't anyone ever suggest stash? With stash you have no commission payments and it only costs 1 dollar a month until you hit 5k. When people asking how they should get started why not get started with stash, which has no minimum, grow your funds in ETF's until you get 5k+ saved up (including adding how ever much extra you can each week), learn about the stock market, and then take your money to a real broker?

I feel like I see very little answers to beginners and or people with little starting capital getting told to use an app like stash, is there something wrong with the app and should be stayed away from?

I guess I'm asking because I have little (under 1k) to get started so I started a stash account and am adding to it every week and when I get close to 5k I will go to a real broker, unless there is a reason I should get my money out of the app now?

Looking for trading advice

I've been practicing trading with paper accounts. My goal is not long term or day trading. I am looking to try and turn profits on a weekly basis.

Since I am fairly new, I am only going to start with $1000. My question is this - with my low starting capital, and my goal of turning a profit in a single week, should I stick to low priced stocks under $10 so I can buy more shares and thus increase profits? It seems buying stocks like Apple for $130+ wouldn't yield much profit after only a week since I can't get many shares of it to begin with.

Thank you for your advice!

George Soros Stock Market Predictions for 2017

http://ift.tt/2l40XH5 If you want to get a good idea of where the stock market is going in 2017, it might be a good idea to see what the “smart” money is doing. In this case, it’s George Soros, the founder of the $4.5-billion Soros Fund Management LLC and the 23rd wealthiest person in the world. What is George Soros predicting for 2017?

Soros has a comprehensive understanding of the U.S. and global markets, and the U.S. economic outlook for 2017. Soros famously made $1.0 billion in a single day, back in 1992 when he bet against the British pound. So we know he’s not afraid to make a big bet on something he’s sure of, even if the prevailing wisdom suggests otherwise.

[advice] Cheapest technical analysis website or software under $10/month?

I am new to stock trading, and I am looking for a website or software with good technical analysis tools. I don't want to use the free tools online such as freestockcharts.com because I heard that the data is not entirely up to date. I am already aware of TC2000 and StockCharts.com, but I am on a budget and I would prefer something thats cheaper than $10 a month. Does anyone know of anything? Please don't recommend brokers because I am on a budget and I can only afford the Robinhood app right now.

Stock Analysis

As part of my job I analyze stock charts, indicators, news, and ER. I know people occasionally post their DD on various stocks but it seems mostly to be tickers of their choice. If you'd like, I'd be happy to look over tickers for you. It could be just a second pair of eyes, one you're on the fence about, or whatever reason.

Of course, anything I find for you would be my view and opinion and I am in no way saying use it as validation to buy/sell. Just wanted to offer my help to anyone who would like it.

Comment any amount of tickers and I'll throw up my findings as a reply. If it seems to be something people find useful, I'll consider making this a regular thing.

GLTA!

When do YOU buy the breakout?

For those that trade breakouts, what do you have most success at entering? When the candles body finishes the day out of the pattern? When a whole candle is formed outside the pattern? On a pull back to retest the patterns support/resistance?

Is there a limit to the number of companies you should own?

The majority of my money in the market is in index funds - 60% or so, trying to make it 80%. The remainder is put into companies of my choosing. For this 20%, I'm using robinhood, and there are no commisison fees, so I wonder, is there any particular "max" number of companies? Conceivably I could put my money into several dozen companies instead of more heavily into a small number. Is there any downside to this (besides the fact that the stocks obviously won't all be winners)?

Options worth it?

So I've been starting to invest, and I have done fairly well with the few thousand I have put in so far. I've looked into options, but it's kind of overwhelming for me right now. Is it worth it to take time and look into options, or should I just stick to my current plan (basic stocks).

Why I Would Short the Entire Wireless Sector

Our cell phones are becoming more and more powerful by the day. LTE coverage has become the standard across all networks and it is reaching even the most rural areas of the country. Data from our phones is transmitted to one another in the form of radio waves which is commonly known as the broadband/wireless spectrum. These radio waves travel in different frequencies and different bandwidths. Each particular geographic location/county in the United States has its own frequency spectrum that we transmit data from. The frequency spectrums vary from:

-Low 700 MHz -Mid (in between) -High 2.6 GHZ

Major wireless companies, like AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon, buy licenses for these spectrums in these different geographic locations. There are two main qualities that all wireless carriers want in their products:

-Reliability -Speed

Low frequency spectrums (700Mhz) are more reliable because they offer a wider range of coverage. High frequency spectrums (2.6 Ghz) are faster but are less reliable because they have less coverage. When a company like Verizon says, “we have a large LTE network”, they are generally referring to the large amount of licenses they have in the low spectrum.

4G stands for 4th generation wireless systems. The ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) is one of the three sectors of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is responsible for radio communication. This is the organization that set the standards for speed requirements for 4G and 5G. For instance, the standards of 4G are 100 megabits per second for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 gigabit per second for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users.) For the power of a 4G network to be fully utilized, a company, such as Verizon, needs to own many spectrum licenses in many different locations

In most recent years, the demand for licenses has gotten to a point where the need for capacity is greater than the need for coverage. There's actually more demand for mid-band spectrum than there is for low-band spectrum because of the need for companies to switch to 4G and even 5G in the future.

How Companies Acquire Licenses

Here is where things get interesting. These spectrum licenses are not just handed out to these major companies, they come at a price. These licenses basically trade in their own market. Let’s take a look at some ways a company can acquire these licenses.

-Auction

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sells spectrum licenses in chunks at an auction to maximize profit. When they decide to auction off spectrum, they release a chunk like the 700MHz we discussed above. A carrier’s best chance for a better network is to own more bandwidth in that spectrum. If a company like Verizon wants a big, fat network, it has to have more of these spectrum licenses.

Because the demand for a better network is constantly being risen to a new standard, the demand for these licenses at auction are going up by enormous amounts. The most recent sale for some spectrum licenses at auction went for 10 billion dollars. No matter how big a company is, that is a massive expense to take on for licenses that only cover a certain area of the country. Over the past few years, these licenses have auctioned off for tens of billions of dollars.

-Open Market Between Companies

Companies within the industry buy and sell these licenses off of each other in strategic moves to help improve their business as well as to balance their books. They also lease the licenses out to other companies to gain a revenue stream.

Future Problems

  • Growing scarcity and demand for Spectrum Licenses

The prices of these licenses is only growing because of the demand for companies to provide the fastest and most reliable network. As technology continues to evolve and we carry on into 5G, 6G, and 7G who knows what companies will be paying for these different spectrums across the country. In fact, in every one of these companies 10k statements, their #1 risk factor for business is usually something like this:

The scarcity and cost of additional wireless spectrum, and regulations relating to spectrum use, may adversely affect our business strategy and financial performance.<

-Growing Debt

These companies are accruing a massive amount of debt that could inhibit future growth. Currently AT&T has 125 billion in debt and Verizon is close behind with 110 billion. Verizon’s Debt to Equity ratio is currently 479. This means that they have 479x more liabilities than they do assets!

-Higher Phone Plans We have all seen our phone bills go up drastically over the years. If these major companies continue to pay enormous cost for licenses we could see a dramatic rise in our cost as well. They could very well pass the cost on to the consumer in the form of higher premiums.

-Disruptive Tech

A new piece of technology that eliminates the use of this broadband/wireless spectrum could completely shake up this entire industry. Verizon obtains 70% of its revenue through wireless services and AT&T obtains 50% of its revenue from wireless services. If a new competitor stepped in with this new technology, it could singlehandedly run these other businesses into the ground.

Final Thoughts

T Mobile has grown considerably in the past year and just recently there has been new rumors of their company buying sprint, causing the stock to go up another 5%. Much of this success came from their unlimited data plans which now both Verizon and AT&T are now offering. T Mobile has talked about doing a merger with Sprint in the past but it was always shut down by the government because they do not want an oligopoly to form in the wireless communications sector. People now argue that since Trump is in office, he would approve of this merger. Deal talks won’t start until April, after the next spectrum licensing auction from the FCC.

Regardless if this happens or not, I believe that the increased debt that these companies are taking on from accruing spectrum licenses will cause them to become less and less profitable in the future. Currently I would short either Verizon or T-Mobile because I believe they are highly overpriced for the kind of debt they have and will take on in the future. I also currently do not believe that the Sprint/T Mobile merger will take place, and both stocks will drop considerably because of it.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this or any contradictory statements to my current stance on the wireless sector.

Wondering how people will go about Snapchats upcoming release.

So I'm just wondering what some of you guys will do when snapchat becomes available if anyone thinks it's worth it. Only reason I'm asking is because top post that came up when I searched up snapchat was trashing snapchat saying that the investor have short term memory and with top comments calling it a "fad-app". So I was just wondering if r/stocktmarket feeling for snapchat changed or still the same and if so is anyone going to get in on it.

Trading with the RSI

Hi guys. I have always been interested in the RSI tool. It seems as though when it is in the low 30s it can be quite successful with a sound amount of fundamental knowledge to support your judgment. Has anyone had any success doing so? Cheers.

Taking Savings Account Money And Putting It To Work In the Stock Market

I'm looking to take a big portion of the money I have saved over the past few years (currently 18) and investing it into some index funds (a little over $6,000). My goal is to have the money grow instead of doing nothing in my savings account. I would like to pull the money out in a few years. What would you guys' suggest who have done something along these lines?

Benjamin Graham's 3 criteria for a sound equity investment:

To properly determine if a company is a good buy, it should meet the following:

1) It should be a large, adequately sized company with enough resources and market share to remain competent through recessions and dips.

2) It must be financially stable. Adequate income over the past 10 years, low debt, and high liquidity.

3) It must be led by solid, qualified, competent management.

Bonus: 1) The organization must not have missed a dividend payment in the last 20 years. (If applicable) 2) The organization carries an intangible, positive brand identity (ie. Starbucks, Apple)
