You guys think Newlink Genetics (NLNK) is a good share to invest in?

So as many of you know, Ebola is becoming an increasing threat to everyone, so this company is working on a vaccine, and have one already, it treated 100% of lab monkeys. So it seems pretty promising. Also, they are working with the Canadian Government. Im relatively new to investing and feel that this company will be pretty successful. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

[AMZN] [GOOG] Amazon Twitch deal (x-post from /r/finance)

FULL DISCLOSURE: I own stock in both GOOG and AMZN I didn't see a post in /r/finance about Amazon and Twitch striking a deal. At first we heard Google was looking, so I suppose Twitch went out and found other possible buyers.

Anyhow, at first the deal struck me as odd. Google would be a very good match for twitch. Amazon, however, isn't a gaming/search/social site. Quite honestly, any time I go to Amazon, I spend money. Only once in a while does Google get a buck directly from my pocket (Chromecast, maybe a song or two. Rarely an App). Another full disclosure: When I visited Google physically in Mt. View, CA, I bought a hat, a mug, and some stickers from their gift store.

Now, after searching reddit for Amazon/Twitch deal, and slightly breezing through the other /r/ sites, I can see that Amazon made a wise choice. Twitch gets a gamer / video-er / sharer market that is unlike any other social network I know of. The fan base is fierce and loyal. Some like this deal, some do not.

From an investment standpoint, I can see Amazon making their money back from this deal within 5 years. Maybe sooner. As long as management at Amazon is diligent to assure the twitch community that nothing is changing, doesn't change twitch, and listens to the twitch community, they will have a loyal customer base; because that is what they bought.

Handling this type of acquisition inside Amazon may strain management in the beginning, and new talent will surely need to be brought in. Finding synergies is fine, as long as the goal is to grow the customer base instead of the bottom line. If Amazon starts making major changes to twitch, this will fail.

All in all, though, I think it can be a good match. The technology is there. The customer base is there. The twitch brand is there (thank you twitchplayspokemon). The logistics are there (does twitch need logistics?).

Did Google lose out? Does it even matter asking that question? In the old world of sneaky business, accountants, finance guys, boats, hos, and lawyers, one could argue that Google did due diligence and deemed twitch an egg; but made an offer to sucker a competitor in to the buy. I highly doubt that since the twitch fan base is really appealing. Besides, Google's mission statement is "Do no evil" (or something like that)

Please share your thoughts on this.

I'm just starting to keep up with 10 and 90 day averages compared to the daily volume of the stocks I hold. The past two weeks have been going well but I'm noticing that the volume is starting to fall under the averages does this indicate the bullish run is ending or am I doing this wrong?

GOOG announces Project Wing, delivery by drone

Google Inc. (GOOG) has jumped into the fray with other tech giants, including Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) with plans to launch product delivery drones of its own. The company's Google X laboratory is developing drones under the name of ‘Project Wing’ and they will be used to make doorstep deliveries. Google X is also working on other ambitious projects, such as Google Glass, and self-driving cars.

The search giant reported that it has been working on drones for the last two years, and that it could still be years before the unmanned vehicles are able to deliver goods on a daily basis. A video was recently released showing a drone delivering goods (candy bars, dog treats, cattle vaccines, and water) to a farmer in Queensland, Australia. More than 30 successful flights have been made in that area.

Recently I bought some stock of corning (GLW) only to find out today that it looks like apple won't be using gorilla glass for their new iPhone, but a sapphire glass instead. Now I know that Corning does more than just make phone screens for the iPhone, but should I be worried that gorilla glass will go on the wayside in the very near future?

So, play today on DGLY? Buy the dip?

DGLY took a drop today down 17% and is climbing back up 3% in a few minutes. Since this is a security camera company, like TASR (GPRO for cops) I think there is a lot of room for this to grow and it's gone higher in the past few years. I see this as discounted shares right now and there will be a good dead cat bounce tomorrow for sure. It also looks like the whole sector is down, so I don' think this is going to tank. Their volume is still 6x the daily average and I think people are going to load up on this while it has dipped.

Question about plus500

Hello! First off, some info.Yesterday, at around 2PM, I installed plus500 out of curiosity and because they have a demo account where you get €20000 to test around with. I have in the past been very active on Eve Online and have made a metric shitton of virtual money playing its market, and since there's a lot of similarities between a virtual economy and a real one I figured, why the hell not.

Now, I'm not up to date with all the trading lingo, nor have I ever done anything closely related to the stock market before. All I know and have learned from trading on Eve is how to recognize patterns, judge decisions, and calculate risk for myself. Long story short, I started of my demo account with €20000 and 8 hours later I was sitting on €15000 in profit, my only loss being €0.68 because of a judgement error when I started off. I haven't been busy with it 8 hours straight either, I just checked on it sporadically and looked some things up, made some adjustments and bought/sold some more stuff whenever I had time.

My question to you is this: since this means I practically doubled my starting money in a relatively short period, I naturally got sceptical about it. Is this demo account legit? And if yes, is it really that simple or did I get lucky? In the same vein, is this amount of profit normal? Because if this is how things are, and I could pull this off with real money...

I'm not one for taking rash decisions, as that results in tears and anger and loss of money. But if this is legit, I might start saving up an amount to be used for stock trading (some money I can set aside and not worry about if I lose it) and make some more with. Hell, even if I start with about €2000 and manage to make €3500 of that, that's almost a months worth of pay right there in profit.

Secondly, with plus500 there seem to be no big fees attached to transactions I'm doing. If I put €2000 in, manage to doubly my money, and want to take €4000 out, how much would they be taking for themselves?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thanks for answering in advance!

Ok.. I'm aware that any great achievement requires great effort and being successful with options would certainly be a great achievement. That being said, if the studying and the work was done, and the right books were read and the appropriate amount of time was dedicated to learning and analyzing the "art" of options trading, can a living be made buying and selling stock options?

Best Investing Portfolio Metrics [X-Post /r/investing]

Hey all,

I'm looking for any websites you all use to track your portfolio performance, metrics (both in terms of turnover and portfolio company metrics like net margin, etc.), and other related facts.

I found the old SigFig to be very helpful as they had a great metrics system featured here. But since they have made the push to monetize via managed portfolios they have actively degraded their site and tools as a way to obfuscate your portfolio and drive people to an "Expert", it's a practice I really admonished them for via email but nonetheless it looks like I need to look somewhere else.

I think it's time I branch out and look for other tools for analyzing performance and portfolio metrics. As a side note I have TD Ameritrade and have messaged them, they are unable to provide an annualized return or other metrics and you must create/produce them yourselves.

What sites do you use to analyze your portfolio companies and your investing success (or failure?).

Thanks everyone.

My father wants to invest $20,000 (over half his life savings) into TVIX. I don't know anything about the stock market, but I dug around for other people's opinions and it seems like a bad idea. What do you guys think?

(xpost from r/stocks)

Like I said, I know nothing about stocks. Literally zero knowledge on it.

However, since my father's $20,000 is in my bank account (long story, don't ask why), he has requested that I go and invest it into TVIX on his behalf.

I dug around a little and it seems like the overwhelming consensus is that TVIX is a really dangerous stock to invest in.

I called my dad about this and basically all he said was, "don't worry about it."

He did give a brief explanation, and despite the language barrier (his first language is Chinese) what it boiled down to was:

  • TVIX prices drop when the market is rising, and the market will drop soon so now is a good time to buy.

No idea what it means - seriously, I'm financially retarded - so I wanted to gather opinion from you guys. At the end of the day, it's still my dad's money but if this is a bad idea how can I convince him of it?

I've already talked to him but I don't think he's considering my concerns seriously due to my lack of expertise.

Appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks.

I have a school project.

I've been managing my own portfolio for two years. I do fairly standard stuff, indexes, etf's, etc. I rarely shift money. Mostly it just sits, which is what it should do. But I have this school assignment to invest 100,000 imaginary dollars.

The issue is, the assignment will only last 30 days. I get extra points in the class the better I do. I have to make 5 trades. Things like SPY and Jensx aren't going to have the kind of volatility I need to win. Last semesters winner made $5000 so that's my goal. What kind of strategies or mindsets can I employ to attempt this goal? Do you have tips or advice?

Advice on LUV

I'm a beginner and trying to learn all I can about trading. Got tired of my money just sitting in my saving account basically becoming less valuable to inflation so I bought a vanguard mutual fund (star fund) and opened a scottrade account. I bought 64 shares of Southwest when it was at around $16 on advice from my wife's very rich grandfather and it has worked out pretty well so far, trading around $31 today

My question is should I sell it now? I keep hearing about a market correction coming and I'd like to sell and put the profit into a safer stock until I figure out my next move.

Interest Rate Bottom: The Charts Confirm Yes

Last Friday, interest rates hit 2.30% on the 10 year bond. While counter intuitive, this looks like a long term bottom prior to a move back to 3%. The charts always tell us the truth, so let's take a look. First, note the large sell on Friday with huge volume. This can be seen clearly on the ProShares UltraShort Lehman 20+ Yr (NYSEARCA:TBT). The volume was the biggest since interest rates last bottomed in early-mid 2013. This is known as capitulation, a clear signal of a bottom. In addition, the following day (Monday) interest rates did a complete reversal of their down move. This is known as a reversal candle and is a major sign of a near term bottom. These signals clearly tell investors rates will begin to move higher and could see 3% by year end.

United States Steel Corp Surges: Nearing Key Shorting Level

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE:X) is jumping sharply higher by almost 5% on the day. It is trading at $38.13 +1.73 (+4.81). This stock has rocketed higher ever since its last earnings report. This report surprised Wall Street and has made shorts cover and institutions buy. While a powerhouse, the stock is coming into a major resistance around $40.00. This level will be a solid shorting opportunity for swing traders.

Cashing In On Visa Inc

Visa Inc (NYSE:V) is one of the leaders in global payment technology. The stock was recently able to break above a major intraday trend line. Since making this break, it has been consolidating in a bullish manner, as shown in the 10 minute intraday chart below. The key level to watch for an intraday Visa Inc (NYSE:V) breakout will be a close above $211 in the 10 minute chart. If this occurs traders can expect a move up into the following levels: The first level will be $212.45 followed by $213.44 and ultimately gap fill at $214.10. Make sure you are watching these levels as they will provide great levels for trading.

Priceline Stock About To Pop

Shares of online travel operator Priceline Group Inc (NASDAQ:PCLN), have been out performing the markets as of late. While the broader indexes have been in a steady decline over the last few weeks, Priceline Group Inc (NASDAQ:PCLN) has been trending sideways to higher. This relative strength should not go unnoticed by traders and investors.

The chart I have included below is one that is forming a bullish consolidating pattern. If this chart does play out in full, shares of Priceline Group Inc (NASDAQ:PCLN) could see a nice pop and potentially challenge the all time highs of $1378.96. Now, I will preface that by noting, Priceline has reported earnings on Monday morning which disappointed, these reports can cause large swings in share price in the near term. However, the overall chart pattern will often supersede any fundamental information in the greater share price move. Therefore, the smart trader and investor will watch this chart pattern closely, using it and other technical factors to determine when to enter and exit the position. While also being aware of other factors such as earnings which may cause volatility. Place this pattern and levels on your PCLN chart and watch it closely.

IPO underwriting question

I understand that in a firm commitment the underwriter buys all the shares from a company before it goes public, therefore funding the company. But wouldn't that mean the underwriter owns the company since they bought all the shares? Or is it that they just find the company then make the shares to sell on the market?

Through all of my investment streams, the stock market has been the least lucrative (maybe I just suck) but I love investing in it. I love researching the stock and following "my business". It's like slightly rational gambling to me.

Why do you invest in stocks specifically? Is it lucrative for you? Or is it for another reason?

What sources are you gathering information from when deciding on what stocks to sell/buy etc?

So I created this thread earlier (http://ift.tt/1tUVWl5) and I was thinking that the news sources that I'm currently using are bad.

So from the title, what news sources are you guys currently using? I'm looking for one that is not trying to get that many hits with scary headlines but with good discussion on different stocks etc.

I'm NOT looking for articles that tells me what stocks to buy or not buy, but just a provider that can make good articles to give me enough information to base my judgements on.

Thanks in advande.

EDIT:

For example an article says that a new law will come next month that will affect x market and why you should think about that market.

Few questions from a rookie

So like many others that bounce in and out of here, I'm looking for advice. Not even sure the right questions to ask. I'm a student with some savings, always wanted to invest but never had the funds until now. Couple months ago, I dropped into Scottrade and invested roughly $5500 into Apple and Tesla (don't judge, :P). I've gained an okay amount ($600-) but for 2 months, I feel like I could be doing better.

  • Is this a good start or could I be using my time/funds more wisely?

  • If I leave the above positions alone- would $2k be enough to play around in other companies safely? Any advice which ones?

  • Taxes- in the US for an unemployed student, what are the taxes I'll be looking at if I trade short term?

  • Consider this- if I buy 1 share at $100, then 1 share of the same company when it's $200. How are the earnings calculated? Am I shooting myself in the foot doing this? And can I specifically sell the higher priced share or do they both average out?

  • Lastly, knowing what you know now about the market, what would you do? I'm not looking for a magic bullet to double my cash but what is the most ideal way to maximize my efforts?

Sorry for all the questions, any advice is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Chevron Corporation Collapses Off Highs: Buy It Here

Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) has dropped sharply over the last week. The stock just made a new all-time highs prior, and is seeing profit taking. Chevron Corp will hit support at $122.00. This is a culmination of support trend lines as well as the 200 daily moving average. A significant bounce should occur if this level is hit in the next week. Chevron can be taken as a swing trade.
