What happens with stock in a company merger?

I'm looking at the WBA and RAD (Walgreens and rite aid) merger and wondering what will happen with Rite Aids stock which is around 4.00 when it gets eaten by Walgreens at 81.00?

Anyone know how that shakes out?

Anyone else scalp small profits daily?

I normally trade options but have decided to start trying out some new strategies. I was told about Robinhood so I opened a margin account and funded it with enough to day trade.

I started doing 10-40 trades a day for $30-40 profits using around 10-16k at a time. It seems to be more profitable scalping then anything else I have tried.

I am never in longer than 10-15 minutes and by minimizing my market exposure I have reduced my risk exponentially.

Of course this is really only possible because rh is free to trade with.

But averaging $300 a day consistently seems to be relatively easy with little research.

The biggest issue I have found is liquidity with large trades. My only losses are due to not being able to sell fast enough.

Anyone who has been doing this for a while I would love to hear some strategies

Thoughts on AAPL growth?

Hey all! Investment mostly-noob here. I remember the whole brouhaha with AAPL stock about a year ago now? (Can't remember exactly when it was). Everyone was buying it or talking about buying it and it was crazy expensive, etc. I recently went back to check on the stock since I hadn't heard any clamoring about it in a while. I noticed that the stock's increased by around 40%ish in the past year. My question is basically the following:

  1. If AAPL stock has been doing so well, why hasn't there been as much hype about the stock as there was before? Have I just not been paying attention?

  2. Why do you think Apple has been doing so well? I haven't noticed them make any significant changes to product lines, etc. But they're also not the most transparent communicators. And, as I said, I haven't really been paying close attention to the company.

Who here is old school and remembers the good ole days of Blackberry being the one and only smartphone on the planet?

It had a keyboard!

That was pretty groundbreaking back in the day!

BBRY has been pretty much ignored or forgotten by most of us, but they are getting into the Android game now:

Another highlight during this quarter came from the Mobile World Congress, where TCL launched the BlackBerry KEYone, the most secure Android phone in the world, featuring a smart QWERTY keyboard. The KEYone is the first device launched under the company's licensing agreement with TCL.

Is this enough to rekindle y our interest in the stock?

S&P500 $SPY MONTHLY TIME AT MODE UPTREND HIT 240 PRICE TARGET

Even though the price target has been reached, there still is plenty of time left to rally.

The "Time At Mode" process involves counting 17 months of time at one price as shown on the chart around the 207 level. The measured move involved the range of price action around the 207 mode, which was 214-181 (rounding off) and then adding that range to the mode to show an implied a rally to 240 (207+(214-181)) which we hit last week on Tuesday.

The rally only has consumed 9 of those 17 months, which leaves 8 more months to rally and potentially peak out at a 20% "bull market" reading around the 252 level by year end 2017.

My major point before the election was that 207 was massive support from a variety of perspectives, including my proprietary "Range Move" indicator which flashed a very reliable 'bear market complete' signal at the low in early November. Recall that at least 4 of the top stock market Guru's were advising to be completely out of the stock market and concerned about a crash through the spring and summer last year. I don't want to name names, but let's just say they are billionaires with names like "Stan Druckenmiller, George Soros, and Bill Gross" amongst many more. The idea that they were heavily short the market helped to put in a bottom at that time and the short-squeeze that has occurred from that level then makes a ton of sense.

My other indicators include the also reliable "VIX RETRACEMENT SUPPORT" levels which were essential to defining the pre-election selloff as a key-support-level and low for the "sideways bear market" of 2015-2016.

What we have now is a fantastic "measured move rally" that has hit its target with plenty of time remaining to do more damage to the bears. There no guarantees in life, so don't blame me if I end up being right, or wrong for that matter.

Any questions? Please consider asking in the Key Hidden Levels chat room.

I hope you enjoy the analysis and the reasoning.

Mixed Medium-Term Outlook for Wal-Mart (WMT)

On March 29, 2017 Wal-Mart crossed above its 200 day moving average (MA). Historically this has occurred 192 times. When this happens, the stock does not always continue to rise. It has a median gain of 3.407% and maximum gain of 36.667% over the next 15 trading days.

When we take a look at other technical indicators, the relative strength index ( RSI ) is at 58.1906. RSI tends to determine overbought and oversold levels. I personally use anything above 75 as overbought and anything under 25 as oversold. The current reading declares the stock is neutral and looking for direction but slightly moving up at the moment.

The true strength index ( TSI ) is currently 7.9533. The TSI determines overbought/oversold levels and/or current trend. I solely use this as an indicator of trend as overbought and oversold levels vary. The TSI is double smoothed in its calculation and is a great indicator of upward and downward movement. The current reading declares the stock is up. Even though it is still a positive number, it is trending downward.

The positive vortex indicator (VI) is currently 1.000 and just crossed over the negative indicator. The VI determines current trend and direction. When the positive level is higher than 1 and higher than the negative indicator, the overall price action is moving upward. When the negative level is higher than 1 and higher than the positive indicator, the overall price action is moving downward. The current reading declares the stock is trending upward.... What factors do you look for in an investment?

So I've always been a trader on technicals, but recently I've decided to do the more longer term investing since I can't be active on the market everyday from 9.30-4pm.

Currently I'm using 3 metrics to find potential investments to hold for a few months/years. This is the process I use:

1) Look at charts - has it been uptrending over the last 6 months? 2) Look at the Cash/Debt ratio - Looking for ratios 4 or above 3) Look at PE - ideally want it around the 20 mark, but depends on industry when compared to peers

Using this criteria, I found the following potential investments:

OCLR - 60.8 PE - 31.01

TTWO - 6.65 PE - 352.93

GNTX - 1000+ PE - 17.88

MRVL - no debt PE - 380.73

MOMO - no debt PE - 48.67

SLM - no debt PE - 23.15

YHOO - 34.5 PE - -202.85

Now from here, I'll be looking more into the companies and see what they've been promising/doing over the last year and what they plan for the next year. How have they been with Analysts predictions? After all of these check out, I'll probably take a position.

I was wondering what criteria you guys use for longer term investments? I'm fairly new to this as I mentioned, so looking to learn!

Investors bolt from Lululemon as momentum comes to a screeching halt

Athletic apparel sits on display inside a Lululemon Athletica store. Lululemon's earnings miss
3 Hours Ago | 03:07

Shares of Luluemon have cratered as quickly as its sales momentum.

The Canadian retailer's stock tumbled more than 20 percent Thursday, hours after the athletic wear maker warned its fiscal first quarter has gotten off to a slow start amid a sea of drab clothes.

Specifically, weak store traffic and fewer online purchases are setting the chain up for its first quarterly comparable sales decline since the recession.

The news was an abrupt pivot from its fourth-quarter performance, when both sales and earnings posted double-digit gains. At least four analysts Thursday downgraded the company's shares, citing concerns about its about-face.

Lululemon's warning added to concerns about a slowdown in the athletic apparel market, which has also been seen in recent results at Under Armour and Nike.

Hi All,

Just a very quick question, Out of curiosity every couple of days I will download the FCA net short positions data. Purely to see what fund managers are shorting which companies and make sure the companies I'm wanting to go long on aren't being heavily shorted.

I haven't used that data to influence my trade decisions yet. I was wondering if anyone is using this data within their trading strategy and how?

Based on a company's filing (Income Statement, Cash Flow, Balance Sheet), what are some good trends/ratios and bad trends/ratios to be aware of?

Taking it a step further into qualitative measures, any important items to review in SEC filings (10Ks, etc.)?

Double double on SPY

SPY 0.02% was up .70% and I expect a pull back to the 200 EMA eventually. In the meantime I wanted to make a neutral to bearish trade using a ratio iron condor or what is recently called by the tastytrade guys a "Double double".

I am selling the -240/+243 -230/+223 Iron condor for $2.60.

Using the SPY 0.02% skew of the calls and puts I can sell twice as many of the credit spreads (240/243) using less buying power and increasing my credit received.

With 52 days to expiration my break evens are: 242.60 227.40

Giving me a 66% probability of profit if I buy it back at 50%. On chart: http://ift.tt/2nMj74f

Looks like AMZN is making its move over $860

AMZN has been going sideways for a little while, but today its busting a move higher:

http://ift.tt/2nvGOLU

I think its ironic that brick stores like GME are done for, yet AMZN who started off online, is now heading towards brick and mortar stores:

Few people are willing to buy a refrigerator over the internet. And Amazon wants to fix that. Sensing prime opportunity to disrupt more retail models, the internet giant is considering a chain of brick and mortar stores selling furniture, appliances, and other items that prospective buyers would want to see in real life before popping them in their shopping carts, according to a The New York Times report.

Question about Limit Orders and Bid & Ask Prices

Hey guys, I have a question about limit orders and bid & ask prices. I want to start trading but I don't want to find myself in a position where market orders screw me up, so for example if I place a market buy and it executes at a much higher price than the market price or vice versa with a market sell. Now I know that you can use Limit Orders so you can buy or sell at a specific price or better. But my question is, at what price do you set a limit order if you want it to execute right away, while avoiding an execution at a higher/lower price. I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself well, but I kind of want a limit order that executes right away and the difference between that and a market order being that the market order may execute at a surprising price to me, while the limit order won't.

Example: Last: $ 124.58 Bid: $124.53 Ask. $124.60

My common sense tells me that if I want a limit order that executes right away at the best possible price right now, I should put in the order at the ask price which is $124.60. Am I right?

I think this also brings up another question that I have. Why is the last price different than the ask price? Is it because the ask price at the moment of the last trading price was that and has changed since?

I know this is too long and a little confusing, but if anyone can help me here I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Edit: Typo

Choosing an online broker

Hey all, so I've done a lot of study and ready to start trading soon, however I'm struggling to find a broker to go with

I'm currently paper trading through Interactive Brokers, though I'm not 100% sold on the service, here's what I would like through a broker

I'm Australian for a bit of context, 24 years old. At this point I see myself being a buy-and-hold investor, though I might move towards day trading

-access to international as well as the asx market (I could go without asx though I would like to have it)

-minimal costs on trading fees

-5k Max to open an account (this can vary)

-Minimal costs on withdrawal fees

I would like to use robinhood though it's not available in Australia yet. Any service you can recommend with reasons why I would hugely appreciate :)

Thor Industries Stock Pitch

Thor Industries Stock Pitch (THO – 3/28/2017) – $97.34

Buy Thor Industries!!!

Thor Industries is market leader in the manufacturing of recreational vehicles and sells them in the U.S and Canada. Thor’s 2016 fiscal year revenue ending in July totaled $4.582 billion; almost double the number two player in the space Forest River, Inc (Hoovers).

Value:

P/E (TTM) – 16.8 P/E (Fiscal Year Ending 7/31/17) – 15.1 PEG – 0.44 Discounted Free Cash Flow – $168

Thor Industries (THO) trades at 16.8 times TTM earnings compared to 21.1 for the S&P500, an industry TTM average of 20.9. In addition, THO trades inexpensively relative to the company’s growth rate with a PEG ratio of 0.44 and to future cash flow.

Growth:

Next Fiscal Year EPS Growth – 30.8% Projected 1-Year Revenue Growth – 51.7% Projected 3-Year Revenue Growth – 61.9%

Here are some of the important points leading to current and future growth for THO.

Thor Industries has seen impressive increasing demand for their recreational vehicles. In their most recent quarter, the company more than doubled their motorized RV backlog to $706.4 million and nearly doubled towable RV backlog to $1.4 billion (inclusive of Jayco’s backlog).

Thor Industries is benefitting greatly from demographic trends. THO’s most important age group is between the ages of 45 and 60 and the baby boomer population is well within this range. In addition, there is a growing customer base of younger families purchasing the cheaper more affordable trailers and motorhomes. This is important for Thor Industries because it provides the company with a runway for repeat customers, which are likely to purchase more expensive recreational vehicles as their disposable income increases.

THO is investing in its facilities in order to increase production on the back of rising demand. Here is a quote from their most recent earning release.

“We increased production in the first half of fiscal 2017, which is typically a slower seasonal period, to respond to the high demand. We continue to make progress in expanding our production capacity, including expansion projects announced at Keystone, Jayco and Heartland, which should begin to ramp up over the remainder of fiscal 2017 and into fiscal 2018. The investments we are making in expanding our production facilities will position us well for long-term growth, which is a consistent focus of our strategic plan.”

In addition to the company’s rosy forecast for demand growth, Hoover see’s industry compounded growth rate 3% through 2021. Lastly, due to the discretionary nature of recreational vehicles, if there is any uptick in economic growth in the U.S demand for Thor’s products should follow suit.

THO is an acquisitive company, looking to buy companies in their industry that will expand their product offerings. The most recent acquisition was Jayco for $576 million. Jayco has contributed meaningfully to THO’s backlog. In the 2016 fiscal year, the Thor Industries generated $289 million in free cash flow and the company stands in good financial health with reasonable debt and interest coverage. In the future the company may continue to acquire companies leading to more top line growth.

Dividend:

Project Dividend/Yield – 0.00 / 0.00% 1-Year Dividend Growth – 0.00

Past Performance:

ROE – 22.97%

12-Month Price Target:

Thor Industry’s 12-month price target is arrived at by giving the company a multiple in line with its peers at 20.9 and using the consensus estimate of $6.43 for the 2017 fiscal year. This implies a 12-month share price of $134.39 and upside of 38.1%.

When To Sell:

Sell Thor if the economy seems to be turning because they are in a highly cyclical business and will be hurt severely in a downturn. Also, investors need to look for changes in demand within the RV industry more specifically.

CBIO on fire today! +220%

CBIO had a pop in Feb, but its been a long and painful downtrend for this stock for the longest time.

There is some big action here at the moment:

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 28, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Catalyst Biosciences, Inc. (CBIO), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel medicines to address hematology indications, today announced that the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) approved the Investigational New Drug Application (IND) for CB 2679d/ISU304. Question about a specific example of PDT rules on Robinhood

First, let's assume I use a margin account but also do not have 25k.

Suppose today, I own 500 shares of AAPL and they're currently worth $50 each.

Scenario 1: Tomorrow, I sell the 500 shares at $50 each. 30 minutes later, the price drops to $40 each and so I buy back 500 shares. 30 minutes later, the price drops to $30 and I buy another 500, totaling 1000 shares. Do I get marked PDT twice?

Scenario 2: Tomorrow, I sell the 500 shares at $50 each. 30 minutes later, the price drops to $40 each and so I buy back 200 shares. 30 minutes later, the price drops to $30 and I buy another 300, totaling 500 shares. Do I get marked PDT twice?

Question from a beginner

So I'm looking to get into trading stocks and so far I've done a whopping 5 hours of research on it (so I know nothing). While gaining knowledge I'd like to lurk on an stock market application so I can get a feel of how things work without actually buying and selling stocks. I am thinking about using thinkorswim. So my question is do I need an Ameritrade account to use the application? If so, is there any draw backs of opening an Ameritrade account and not actively buying and selling stock?

Lastly, my end goal is day trading (I know I have a while before I get there), is Ameritrade a good choice for that route?

Thank you

Licensing

Hi everyone, I am currently a junior finance major and was wondering what Licenses I could acquire at this given time. I plan on going into either being an analyst or a trader but now a days with the job market having a lot of competition I feel like any financial certification or license would help a lot. So i would greatly appreciate any input please and thank you!

What do you use to calculate fair value?

Calculating fair value is a very important part of the stock investment process. It is one thing I've yet to fully develop. I've thought of taking the average analyst expectation of all analyst made over the past year, but that's generic and I know there's a better way.

So I am interested in hearing the methods that others us to calculate the fair value of a stock.

X-Post from /r/Stocks: I created a spreadsheet that automates pulling trending stock symbols, recent news, and recent tweets into Excel.

TL;DR: I created a spreadsheet that automates pulling trending stock symbols, recent news, and recent tweets into Excel. If you don't want to provide an e-mail, just PM me for it, otherwise you can find it here: http://ift.tt/2nZwYSz

Hey all,

I know some of the members in the group prefer to work in Excel (including myself) so I created a spreadsheet that looks at trending symbols and estimates bullish/bearish sentiment. I never had the time to develop software engineering skills, but the recent launch of a few add-ins has allowed regular joes like myself to harness the power of APIs.

Requirements:

  1. Excel

  2. Blockspring Add-in (can download from within sheet)

  3. A StockTwits account (Free)

What it pulls:

  • Trending Symbols (30 at a time)

  • Historical Price Data (Up to 5 years)

  • Recent News

  • Recent Tweets

  • Bullish/Bearish Sentiment of recent tweets

Hoping this is something that is useful to the group, and I am more than happy to help peeps setup the sheet so they can use it. Just send me a message on here or to my inbox.

Full Disclosure - I am in no way affiliated with Microsoft, Blockspring, or StockTwits. I just happen to find the services very valuable.

As requested, Google Sheets link has been added to the spreadsheet.

What/when is the optimal way/time to implement a high dividend yield ETF into portfolio?

I am researching the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM) to implement into my portfolio. My investment strategy is to hold long-term for retirement. I generally invest in index and sector funds. I have a moderate to high risk tolerance as I'm entering my mid twenties.

Could someone explain to me why an investor would choose a fund that produces a high dividend yield as opposed to growth-oriented funds? Are these dividend funds for investors that are aiming for a steady stream of income? Would allocation to these funds make sense for a younger investor with a high risk tolerance and long-term time horizon?

TLDR: Should a high yield dividend fund be on my radar as a young investor with a steady stream of income (full-time job), or am I better off with index funds?

Predicting Stocks by Aggregating Redditors' Predictions

I always wondered how accurately you can predict something by just having a bunch of people give their individual predictions, and then averaging it out. Now, I want to test this out.

Basically the way this would work is I would send out a daily google form that will have lets say 30 questions. Each question relates to a specific stock. So for example, question 1 would be: Do you think AAPL will go up or down tomorrow? And you would have two multiple choice options: Up, or Down. Then you would just do this for every stock on the form.

If we have enough people, we can average that out, and see how good we are at predicting stocks. Just to make it a little bit more fun, I can make a separate analysis of having a robot randomly pick UP or DOWN for each of the 30 or so stocks every day, and see if our predictions are better than random predictions.

But before we can do this, we need to know 2 things:

How many stocks do you think we should track every day, and which stocks should we track?

To answer this I've made this google form, and once I have enough responses I'll make the daily prediction form and send it out. The form will ask you for your email address at the end. This is so I can make a mailing list, and automatically send you the daily prediction form.
