How do you use quantopia? + general tips would be great.

Feel free to skip the paragraph below, it's mostly background information that may or may not help.

So I've recently started trading stocks, and by recently I mean 4 days ago, I managed to make like €11.35 which for me is quite a lot of money. You see my family has fallen on hard times and with my student visa I am not allowed to get a job so I went for the one way I could legally make money which was this.

While looking around for information about stock trading, since I tend to go "Oh I made €0.30 that's amazing!" and close, I have stumbled upon Quantopia. Now while looking around I haven't really found any way to actually download and use the thing or just using it via the website. So I was wondering if I was doing something wrong and if someone could point me in the right direction. From what I've gathered it is in closed testing when it comes to actual money, if so I'd really appreciate it if anyone could point me in the direction of something similar if it exists.

While I am here I'd also like to take the opportunity to ask for any general tips on trading stocks if anyone is willing to share them as I tend to avoid overextending and my definition of over extending is anything above a €1.00 profit. On the bright side I never actually lost any money but that also means I don't make that much either.

Thank you for taking your time to read this. I don't really use reddit as evidenced by my account so I hope I didn't mess anything up too badly.

PS: Should I include what site I use for trading in case that helps? I am unsure if that would be alright to do, so I avoided mentioning it.

AMRS- New partnerships and signed with Sephora as well as upcoming conference

Does anyone have experience with Amyris? Looks very promising as a company as they just signed two big partnerships and have several products like perfumes sold at exclusive stores like Neiman Marcus. On Wednesday they have their quarterly conference and was wondering if people think I should buy or wait until after? I have 700 shares now but I'm thinking of going in.

Stock Sales Day

I have around $6,000 of funds I plan to add to my portfolio. Since the presidential election is coming up, I am wondering if this is a good time to invest. I am wondering if there is a high possibility of a "sale" right after election date. I don't want to miss "sales" like Brexit or the G20 again. Any idea when the next "sales" day may come? The types of stocks I buy are usually ones on the SP 500; GOOG, AMZN, FB, NVDA and etc. Thanks. Edit: Off topic but anyone have any idea why Goog stock value dropping after the 3rd quarter earnings report? The numbers had beat analysts' estimates.

Swing Trading Watchlist & Market Update 10-31-16

$SPX Nothing has really changed since last week. We remain below our broken trend line with increased selling volume. It currently feels like we are about to lose our 2120 support area. 2100 looks like it is right around the corner. The 20 day sma remains below the 50day sma and begins to act as resistance. We have lost our trend, and failed to put in a higher high. Things are not looking good for the overall markets. Capital protection is key in this market environment. Aggressive trading and new positions are not recommended. Focus on managing your current positions. Strong Sectors: Financial and Technology

$AEL - Still looking for that solid channel breakout over 18.25's $ACCO - Nice earning breakout and now pulling back to 11.00. Looking for 11.00 to hold and a move back towards 11.60's+ $AMD - Unable to hold up around 7.50's. Would like to see it hold above 7.00 and eventually move back towards that 7.50-8.00 $BOX - Lf it to hold 14.50 support. Break below 14.50's will ruin idea. $CC - Got caught on a fake break on Thursday but Friday gave that 17.00 breakout. Watching for continuation as we near IPO prices. $CENX - Another fake break that caught us. Broken trend turning to support want to see if we break back above 7.50 $EXAS - Over sold RSI and potential bottom bounce setup with nice inverted hammer candle. $SM - Returning once against to a solid trend line support. LF a reversal off this trend. $GRAM - Nice whip saw action towards 8.00 to clear stops, decent volume , and ready to head higher.

Want to move ~$12k out of stocks and into something less risky

Hello everyone,

As the title says, I want to move my money out of the stocks I currently own (and have owned for nearly 10 years) to something like a mutual fund.

I want to be able to take out the money ASAP if I run into an issue with money. Isn't that an issue with mutual funds, that they don't let you do that without some sort of drawback?

I believe I should be looking into Vanguard's stocks based on what I want to do (bc they act like a mutual fund in terms of multiple companies are represented by a single stock), but if there is another option, please let me know.

Sorry if I sound a bit ignorant, but I am not super into this stuff so I am not sure on some things. Pretty much I want to drain my company stocks and move it into a stock acting like a mutual fund.

One note is I do currently hold two Vanguard mutual funds separate from my stocks. These are long term funds.

Second note - currently a masters student so my income is $0 this year. I want to do this for tax reasons.

Thank you

r/StockMarket Weekly Stock Picking Challenge for the Week of (10/31 - 11/4) is now OPEN for picks! *RATIONALE REQUIRED!*

So I just barely managed to get a thread up for this week's challenge ... but honestly I may not be so fortunate in the following weeks to come ... My schedule is going to be getting hella busy in the weeks ahead unfortunately =/ But at least for this upcoming week we will have the challenge running here! So have at it with your stock picks this week r/StockMarket! ;)

Welcome to the r/StockMarket Weekly Stock Picking Challenge for the Week of (10/31 - 11/4)

PLEASE READ THESE RULES THOROUGHLY BEFORE POSTING UP YOUR PICKS!

SEE RECENT RULE CHANGE #7 AT THE BOTTOM -- RATIONALE NOW A REQUIREMENT!!!

If you want to be eligible to participate in this week's contest here is what you need to do (REQUIRED!):

  • 1.) Post 2 tickers (ex. AAPL = Apple) but YOU MUST pick 2 not just 1 or else I will not add you to our list of contestants!
  • 2.) Choose either Long or Short for each ticker (Obviously LONG - if you think it will go up ... or SHORT - if you think it will go down this week...)
  • 3.) Both of your picks MUST each be at least $2 at the very minimum!

Contest Rules (READ THESE AND FOLLOW THEM!):

  • 1.) No OTC or Foreign companies.
  • 2.) No Options, Futures, Forex, stuff like that... Equities ONLY that trade on the U.S. Stock Exchange!
  • 3.) If you don't post both the ticker AND the direction (LONG/SHORT) you won't be added to the list of contestants for this week's stock picking challenge!
  • 4.) You cannot duplicate someone's exact play! For example- If someone picks AAPL - Long and BAC - Long first then you can only pick AAPL - Short and BAC - Long or AAPL - Long and BAC - Short <-- you may only duplicate 1 pick but not BOTH! This is a first come, first serve basis here.
  • 5.) Picks absolutely MUST be posted in here before the 9:30AM eastern cash market open on Monday morning!
  • 6.) You are only allowed 1 leveraged ETF. If you choose two, the second of the two does not count and is still up for grabs. If incorrect picks go un-noticed, you risk your position being forfeited! (These are the 2x/3x ETF's)
  • 7.) RATIONALE - You MUST post up a rationale (either technical or fundamental) for both of your picks or you will NOT be entered into this week's contest!
  • 8.) Please DO NOT EDIT your picks!! If you absolutely must choose another pick, please use a separate post and state that you are changing your original pick to something else!

I will post up the live contest spreadsheet a little after the market closes on Monday with everyone's picks posted, this will include your opening prices, current prices, P&L, & Total ROI for each of your picks, as well as an overall total ROI and an overall average ROI between 2 of your picks, and that will be what we will use to total up both of your 2 picks!

In addition, since we're doing this contest on Reddit, no one will be able to close out their picks during the trading week... Everyone's picks will close at Friday's close! And also everyone's picks will start at Monday's opening prices.

Good luck to everyone in here! Let's see who can deliver the 2 best picks for this week and take bragging rights as the best stock picker of the week here at r/StockMarket! :)

If you have any questions about anything feel free to fire away on this thread...

Also, for anyone looking around for our past weekly contest threads & results here they are!:

Here was our 2nd weekly contest thread & results on r/StockMarket:

Here was our 3rd weekly contest thread & results on r/StockMarket:

Here was our 6th weekly contest thread & results on r/StockMarket:

Here was our 7th weekly contest thread & results on r/StockMarket:

And here was our 8th weekly contest thread & results on r/StockMarket:

Hope to see another great show of participation in here once again this week from everyone here at r/StockMarket! :)

Once again please try to get those 2 picks in before the 9:30am eastern market open on Monday! Ready, set, GO!!!

Have fun y'all and GLTA in upcoming trading week ahead! :)

[Weekly Charting] I'll analyze the top 10 stock tickers posted in the comments and make a video with my analysis

I'm a swing/day trader and will do some short term chart/fundamental analysis on the top 10 tickers posted here. I might throw in some thoughts longer term but mostly you should assume a shorter term trade (days to weeks).

If you want a chart analyzed respond with the following (REQUIRED):

  1. Ticker
  2. Long or short (i.e. do you think it will go up or down)

Rules (READ THESE AND FOLLOW THEM):

  1. ONE idea per post (otherwise we don't know which is being upvoted) Feel free to make multiple posts though...try to keep it to 2 or 3 if possible so we get a good variety

  2. No OTC or foreign companies.

  3. No options, futures, forex, etc. Equities only.

  4. If you don't post both a ticker AND a direction (long/short) I can't analyze it

  5. If you see one you want analyzed already posted, upvote it.

  6. If you miss the thread but still want a ticker analyzed, look for the YouTube link and post your idea in the YouTube comments. I'll respond there via text!

I'll do the top 10 most upvoted or the 10 most common that follow all the rules. If there are ties I'll do them based on who posted the earliest.

I'll edit the post and post the video at the top in bold after I let the thread run for a while and collect tickers!

Have fun!

Want to learn, need REAL resources (xpost from /r/stocks/)

Hey all, I'm still learning the basics of the stock market and trading would fit my lifestyle perfectly. Now I don't plan on day trading right away, maybe in a few years if possible but I am by no means jaded by the fact that I could lost a lot of money and may never be successful, but I am willing to put in the time and dedication necessary to learn the tricks and skills. However, just like most people, I keep getting misdirected by these shitbags who want money for their lessons (Timothy Sykes...etc..)

I haven't actually purchased products from anyone who claims they the answers, I am smarter than that. However, my question is where do I go to study and learn the REAL materials that will help me be successful and narrow down my chances to pick a successful trade? I'm sick of wasting my time on all these assholes who claim to know it all but end up being pump and dump schemes to make themselves rich...

So I guess the question here is, where can I go to learn and study real resources that will help me be successful and pick good trades? I'm willing to put in whatever is necessary, and it's not even like I need much to get by in life ($100 a day would be amazing) I just want the RIGHT resources and I want to be on the right path to being a good trader myself instead of relying on other people/pump and dump schemes and invest my time and studying properly....ANY help at all would be greatly appreciated.....thanks everyone

Lessons from the world of currency trading

Ever since college I have been fascinated by this mysterious world of currencies trading (also known as FOREX). The great attraction for me was obviously the money, the huge potential for profit, but also the exclusiveness of being a trader. I always thought that trading attracts a certain breed of people, where only the best of the best succeed. And, as I always thought of myself as being one of the best, I set myself an objective of becoming a successful trader.

You might ask why I chose to trade currencies. To be honest, I was lured in by the very low entry barriers ( at that point in time, it took close to $500 to open an account; now you can open a live account for as little as $50) and the huge potential to the upside, thanks to leverage. Next I embarked on a paid forex course that opened my eyes to the possibilities that were out there. I opened my first demo account, read my first charts and plotted my first indicators. A new world was taking shape and I was getting more and more attracted to it. But the final argument that convinced me was the fact the forex was the biggest and the most liquid market in the world, with over $5 trillion in daily volumes and the opportunities were all around, to the buy side and to the sell side.

It didn’t take long for me to join the ranks of rookie traders who are so eager to earn some money trading that they go in the markets unprepared and leave with their pockets empty. I’ve spent a couple months playing on a simulator, trying to participate in free contests, but eventually my patience ran out. I blew out a few real-money accounts while in college. Luckily for me, I did not lose too much money, but hey, I was a student and everything I saved went into my trading passion. So needless to say, that was all I had. First lesson to be learned from here: don’t invest money you do not afford to lose. While I believe the money I lost to be a fair tuition for learning the ropes in currency trading, I still could have done a lot better just by practicing more on my demo account.

Nevertheless, I was perseverant in trying to make it in trading. I did not let myself down by the losses I incurred, but I embraced them and got more motivated. After all, if you really want something, then you should do everything in your power to achieve it. When I managed to save some money again to invest in trading, I set my goal to not lose money. I realized by then that another important lesson is to be in the markets at all times. The best way to gain an edge in the market is to be a part of it at all times.

No matter how much I struggled to get my balance up, it seemed that I could not lift my account off the ground (remember I used to fund my account with only a couple hundred dollars and use leverage to trade). I could not offset all the small losses and commissions with my winning trades. Pressure was building up and mistakes took place more often. It took me a couple of years to understand that undercapitalization can “kill” you in the markets. Leverage is an incredible weapon for those who know how to use it, but in the hands of a rookie it is a ticking bomb. Small accounts with high leverage blow up incredibly fast, as rookie mistakes are being exacerbated by the effects of the leverage. Always make sure to have enough risk capital in your account. As it turned out, all my efforts to make it in the financial trading world did actually pay off, even though not as I first imagined it would. I eventually landed a job with a prop trading firm. Here is where things got really interesting and I have exponentially boosted my knowledge. I cannot stress enough how important it is to be among peers that have the same passion as you do, who are professional and have the competitive mindset that will push you to outperform yourself. Of course not everybody is lucky enough (or maybe don’t even want to) to land a trading job, but if you really want to make it in trading you should spend more time on trading forums. Share ideas, compare performances, get your motivation up. Seeing others do it and being successful at it will push you higher than you could imagine.

It all started out as a college hobby and it transformed itself into a career. I just gave it my time, dedication and perseverance. For all of those thinking about starting their journey in trading I say do it with an open heart. It is the most rewarding activity you could ever do. It gives you the freedom you always dreamed of. At least that’s what it felt like for me.

If you’re ready to open your own trading account, make sure you take the shortcut and use the advice given in these lines. Stay motivated, well capitalized, always in the markets, gain your edge and enjoy the ride. You will also need a trusted broker to partner with. Forex broker has great offers for new accounts that could definitely help you start off on the right foot. Just remember the basics and you’ll be fine!

Question about market share.

Long time lurker here and finally have grown the cajones to ask a question. Does anyone know/ is there readily available information out there that breaks down the market share between online brokers like Interactive Brokers and TD Ameritrade and full service funds like mutual funds? CNBC and all those other news channels I'm not supposed to watch for market advice say everyone is taking their money out of private investing companys and becoming retail investors themselves. So, does anyone know the trend that is taking place? I imagine its converging, but would appreciate more information on it. Thanks!

Solar Energy...who will catch the biggest wave?

The solar renewable energy industry has been bearish and surprisingly sluggish since the advent of photovoltaic systems hit the market. Investors have lost 40% on average when trying to join this meritorious sector, and this has had a stagnating impact on newer investors who are looking for investment venues in the renewable energy sector. Despite the adverse pecuniary effect, industry data shows otherwise. The price for installing solar panels has dropped 40%, meaning middle-class homeowners can now consider renewable energy options. In tandem, demand has increased in equal magnitude. Prognostics indicate that the industry will double in two years, and this gets me wondering about what solar company will catch the biggest wave. Maybe those losses can be justified by the inconvenience of picking the fruit before it's ripe enough to eat. India and China are at the forefront of this movement, and it is safe to conclude that the U.S. will look to follow their path, perhaps out-pacing them. Sunedison, one of the biggest PV installers just recently filed a chapter 11, right before they intended to acquire Vivint Solar, which was struggling to stay afloat in the 2015 solar drought. This acquisition did not take place, and Vivint, after their stock fell through a trapdoor at -74%, are looking to expand into the growing demand for PV systems in Texas. They're currently undervalued and i suspect they're at trading at an attractive price. I am looking to invest in Vivint Solar, and ill make my final decision after they release their financials on November 8th. They are planning on switching their marketing strategy from door-to-door sales to digital. A wise move indeed, since this technique has not been too promising lately. Solarcity (SCTY) currently at 35% market share, will adopt this strategy as well. To cut it short, this industry with no doubt will grow, and i honestly think a diligent search for that small company that will reap the most rewards from this growth, is worthwhile. Leo's documentary about climate change could in fact create a fad that will have a surging effect in this sector. Of course this is mere conjecture, but i don't think we're abandoning reason here. This serves some discussion! What are your thoughts?

Varying opinions on what's going to happen with the general market. Precious metals had a nice run up until recently and I'm wondering if it was simply a pump and dump or are we seeing consolidation into the next run.

Question about APIC?

Sorry if what I'm saying or doing sounds stupid, I'm new to this. Well a few weeks ago when I heard that APIC would be bought by Google I bought a few shares, thinking that it would go up dramatically before the sell goes through. Now, as you can see here, It's been totally flat, not going up or down at all for the past few weeks. What does this mean? Would it be worth it to sell and deal with the $10 fee, or should I just wait and get the money when the sale goes through? Also, one more thing, why does it have a negative P/E ratio?

Thanks in advance!

GNW - bought by China Oceanwide for $2.7bn - stock price dropping? Looking for insight.

I purchased a small amount of stock in GNW last month and was pleased about the buyout news on Monday... until I checked the price and saw it dropping. Looking for insight.

China Oceanwide is purchasing Genworth Financial for $2.7bn in cash. The deal closing date is slated for sometime in mid-2017 for $5.43/share.

I got in when it was much lower than that, however, I'll have to wait until mid-2017 to see any gains from it, correct?

Why is the stock price tanking? Are investors selling because the pay out won't be until mid next year? Are they looking at it like, "better to get returns now than wait for a little more next year?"

Thanks!

Simplified VIXY trading help...

I'm anticipating high volatility following the expected fed rate hike in December. If I wanted to capitalize on it, by buying VIXY, what should I look out for, how long would be clearly too long on it (I'm somewhat aware of it's mean reverting and time depreciation attributes.

I breezed the first few pages of Adam Warner's "Trading Volatility ETFs", realized it was more than I could absorb, but the idea keeps pulling me back in.

Also aware of the XIV strategy of buying at peak volatility as it reverts, which is also appealing.

Help a noob...

I have been getting started with options & I want to make sure I do not bite off more than I can chew...

So I got an account on Optionshouse & funded it with a hundred bucks (I know, bigtime... Jump back, Ben Franklin in the house, but I am just getting my feet wet).

So I bought two calls at $.29 a $2 strike for Nov 16... So I paid $70 +/- (I think... I am still deciphering the interface).

I now have 2 calls & a lot of questions...

  1. It was my understanding that I could only lose the $70 no matter what. That is the limit of my exposure. However, when I click sell and then "Analyze in tradeLAB" it says: Sell 2 GERN @ .15 Max profit = $30, Max Loss = INFINITE and Break Even $2.15

Now, it is the Infinite loss that concerns me, but considering it is a 0.0% chance, am I correct in thinking that still, the max I can lose is the amount I put in (plus expenses, fees, etc...)

  1. if I put in a sell order, there is a bid and an ask... What I am selling it for? I presume the limit price. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance...

New investor, where to get started? How do I know when to buy, and how do I determine whether a company is undervalued or overvalued?

Hi there. 18 year old here. I've had a profound interest in the economy, finance and the stock market since I was 9. I know quite a bit about the current economic climate, world events, etc. I read almost all day, and I already know of quite a few companies. In the last four years, I've made a few rather uneducated bets out of purely instinct (very risky, and I don't want to do it again).

I worked a summer job when I was 13 and made a little over $1500, and a bit after I signed up for a trading platform, and spent almost everything on shares of Facebook. At the time, everyone doubted them and thought they'd fail as an IPO, but I just couldn't understand how that was possible. I looked at their financial statements on a PDF, their earnings seemed to be pretty significant, and while they had debts like any other company, it seemed like their returns were more than their earnings. Also factoring in how Zuckerberg (the CEO) was constantly coming out with new ideas and the popularity of the site (implicating growth), I said screw it and went ahead. 2 years later, I ended up tripling my money.

I waited a few months, did some more research, and this time I took an even riskier bet. I've been following Tesla since 2010 (when I was 10/11ish), and put almost everything I had into 16 shares. I had faith in their products, thought they were extremely innovative, however their balance sheets were/and still are kinda sketchy. They take in an UNBELIEVABLE amount of debt. I said whatever, and I still kind of regret it because I'd be screwed if I lost the money. Instead, I got lucky again. Bought at ~$165ish in January (or February) of 2014, and sold every share at $270 in the summer of last year, when I felt that it wouldn't go any higher (and my timing was almost perfect).

This year, I put quite a bit into the Pound. I had a huge feeling instinctively that Britain would exit out of the EU, simply because of the amount of turnout with the younger people that was expected, and also because it seemed like (according to statistics and a bunch of polls), that only London had positive thoughts on the EU. A bunch of other components too, but this was another rather uneducated venture on my part. Anyway, a week before the vote, I put almost $3000 in, and on the day of voting, I was literally shivering because I knew I most likely fucked up. When I saw the results, I was absolutely flabbergasted. Seriously. 2 days later, I trade off 50% for an enormous profit, then another 25% a week after, and currently I'm still holding the other 25%.

Prior to that (late last year), I bought into crude when it was around the $29.50 mark. After tons of research, I just could NOT imagine it not being able to raise again, in part because of the uncertainty in the Middle East with ISIS and other radical groups seizing regions (essentially effecting the supply). Numerous other factors as well, but I went with my gut feeling. Bought 60 shares, sold all for exactly $50 a few days ago. No regrets, although I know it'll keep rising, I just want to start a fresh slate.

TL;DR: I already have experience with the markets. I'm financially aware, I have good timing, I do my research, but I know nothing about terms like "market cap", I barely know the correlation between interest and how it can take a toll on the stock market, Buffet's strategy of comparing the market cap to the GDP, P/E's, how to tell if a company is undervalued or overvalued (my way of doing it is completely flawed, by just looking at their earnings, and their debt. I know there is more to it than that).

Essentially, I just want to start new again, and while I've gotten lucky in the last few years, I want to take this more seriously and actually get a better sense of what I'm doing, as right now I feel like I've been gambling and getting really lucky by doing minimal, and insufficient research. I don't know enough, I don't really have any strategy either, but I have been rather successful and I think luck definitely plays a role.

PLEASE help me, where do I start? Can I speak with someone? Thank you so much.

Thoughts on PI?

I've been looking at Impinj (PI). They make RFID tags for products so stores can have realtime inventory tracking. Internet of things might be big someday. Does anyone have any thoughts on Impinj? It's down a lot since last month and earnings are coming soon.
