Any successful long-only day/swing traders in stocks out there?

Does anyone know whether short-term (~1-3 days) swing trading can be done without short selling? If so, how much less return compared to swing trading with short-selling?

Could you share your experiences (especially if you're a part-time or full-time trader)? Does it differ from regular swing trading in any significant way in terms of techniques? I would imagine certain swing trading techniques are better suited for it if we don't short sell.

Thank you!

What do you guys think of Goldman Sachs Group (GSG) stock?

I'm a student and we're doing a project that involves simulated stock market trading. Such as Investopedia or the french version we use abcbourse. It's pretty low in the 3 month scale and I believe that it may make a come around. And if you guys have any tips for a first time "investor" as to not lose too much money or which stocks to pick that would be appreciated.

EDIT: The stock is actually (GS) sorry

The Fourth Industrial Revolution: Where will all these radical global shifts lead us?

“The fourth industrial revolution” was this year’s theme of the annual World Economic Forum. Leaders, CEOs, economists, politicians and prominent figures from around the Globe gathered in Davos, Switzerland to tackle current world issues and discuss future development.

The 46th World Economic Forum brought together an elite group of people from politics, finance, technology and art. Over 40 Heads of State and Government and 2500 participants paid $31.473 on average for the privilege of attending the event. The focus was not simply on economics or politics. It was much larger than that. The world leaders tried to find an answer to one fundamental question: where will all these radical global shifts lead us?

According to Klaus Schwab, founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, “we stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work and relate to one another”. He added that this transformation will be unlike anything the humankind has ever experienced before. After reading these words of great magnitude, several questions arise. Where are we really headed? What do all these changes mean and how will our lives get easier?

This revolution has several aims. First and foremost, to improve the quality of life. It has the potential to increase the efficiency of the products and services provided, while lowering their costs. As Mr. Schwab explained, on the supply side, the introduction of new technologies will change the way services are provided. However, this will lead to a disturbance in the labor market as a great part of the work force will be substituted by the new technologies. Dissatisfaction will likely arise from economic inequality. Those who will benefit the most from such changes will be the innovators and those who will have the foresight to invest in the inventions. On the demand side, consumers will get more involved and as a result will demand greater transparency.

An interesting assumption that emerged during the Forum states that “if robots rise, interest rates will fall”. The introduction of new machinery will cause approximately 5 million workers to lose their jobs by 2020 in 15 major developed and emerging economies, reports Bloomberg. As a consequence, wages will drop, and there will be a pressure on consumption and the labor market. As the chairman of UBS Group, Axel Weber, put it, “technological progress will put a lid on how inflation can re-emerge”.

Geopolitical issues were some of the most discussed topics during the three days of the Forum. Participants agreed that the refugee crisis will likely intensify in the coming months and can become unmanageable if not solved as soon as possible. More and more people are leaving the Middle-East, abandoning their war-stricken homes and fleeing towards the safe shores of Europe. This has led to a rise in nationalist and extremist parties, which in some countries have managed to come to power.

Unfortunately, not even the United States has been immune to this phenomenon. Donald Trump, a businessman who advocates the closing of the borders and Bernie Sanders, a socialist from Vermont, are the leading presidential contenders of their respective parties. The growing extremism is a very dangerous threat towards globalization and did not pass unnoticed at the forum. Financial experts and economists expressed their worries about the impact on the global markets and economy if radical parties and leaders continue to gain popularity.

The Chinese slowdown and its effects on the world economy were also among the main concerns for the majority of the attendees. However, most agree that this is temporary and we are not headed towards a financial crisis. Christine Lagarde stated that “a degree of volatility is OK. The market sorts things out eventually.” She added that one of the reasons for the sluggish economy is that financial stability is not yet assured. Financial sector weaknesses linger in many countries. Nevertheless, the long term outlook is very positive. Many important investors and market participants seemed highly bullish while talking about markets and economies.

The new technological revolution will most likely have a major impact on the fundamentals of the financial world. One of the challenges that remain is how to create a strong and trustworthy financial system so that people regain the trust that was lost in 2008 and has not been regained yet. At least, not fully! *This article was written for the financial weekly column of the Tra i Leoni newspaper. http://ift.tt/1m1v950

Or maybe tell me which sub I'm looking for? I have a boss that's been using DTN - The Progressive Farmer and paying nearly $1,000 a month for them to give him a interface that merely tracks commodity prices for him in real-time. I'm trying to find an app or platform-based interface that can do this for him for a better price. Any leads?

Thanks so much, in advance

Diversifying strategy for stocks and ETF's

I am new to investing and I want to know other people's strategies of buying stocks and ETF's to diversify their portfolio. Diversification is my #1 goal right now and I don't put away a large amount of money to invest with, just 5-10% of my income.

Strategies can include long term, short term, forms of hedging, value investing, growth, etc.

I personally enjoy ETF's because of the diversification inside them. Regarding the stocks in my portfolio, I am typically going for blue chip companies with solid PE relative to the industry, good track records, great management with experience, and one specific thing I look for is how the company fared in 2007-2009, regarding the problems the company faced and how they handled them. Like I said I am new, but I do research on every single purchase I make. News, annual reports, etc.

Thanks for helping a young investor out!

Black-Scholes-Equation

Hello, I need to hold a short presentation about the black scholes equation. It's for a side course at my university which I visit for "fun" and out of curiosity so I am not 100% familiar with some terms etc.

The mode relies on several underlying assumptions for it to work:

The underlying security pays no dividends // How can I understand this? Does that mean if I want to sell the option in 2 years, i don't get any dividends from it in the meantime?

The volatility of the underlying security remains stable during the period of the contract // I get it that these are just assumptions but does this ever happen? That the volaitility remains stable?

Interest rates remain constant during the period of the contract // In which case wouldn't they stay constant?

And last but not least I would like to know how to "test" the forumla. I see some online calculators but are there any securities I can check online and use their value ?

thank you and excuse my cluelessness

the question is basically in the title already. I heard that leaving your money on the bank is not what you should do, which seems logical to me due to high fees etc. So I would like to invest my money into a company aka I wanna buy shares. But as you probably already realised im a total noob. Can you suggest me some books/online articles to get into it? I also would be interested in daytrading..but I don't even know where and how I do that and I don't want to get scamed by some weird website :P

I live in Austria if this is of any importance.

tl;dr: I want to invest my money..but where? I don't like to take risks. And how to get started with daytrading?

Thank you :)

Are we entering a new financial crisis?

January has been a bloodbath for stocks and commodities everywhere. Oil has been plunging with an unprecedented speed, while China’s precarious situation unsettles even the most optimistic investor. A wave of theories, hypothesis and predictions has been sweeping the markets in every country, with analysts trying to answer one question: are we nearing a new financial crisis?

George Soros — nicknamed the man who broke the Bank of London — had a warning to deliver a couple of weeks ago. According to him, global markets are facing a crisis similar to the 2008 one. He blamed the current situation in China, stating: “China has a major adjustment problem. I would say that it amounts to a crisis”.

When you look at the markets nowadays, it seems that Mr. Soros may be right. Since the first day of trading this month, stocks have been declining on a daily basis. On Wednesday, the FTSE 100, Japan’s Nikkei Index and Topix Index entered a bear market, meaning that they fell 20% from their peak levels. European stocks declined to a 15-month low, with the Stoxx 600 decreasing 3.2% on the same day. A similar situation unfolded in China: the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index closed 4.3% lower. Overall, global stocks have plunged to their lowest levels in two and a half years. Thus, at first glance the picture looks very pessimistic.

On the other hand, there are also investors, analysts and CEOs who do not see only doom and gloom. In an interview with Bloomberg, Evercore CEO Ralph Schlosstein was confident that the real economy will eventually calm the markets. He said that the main world economies have been growing these past few years, although slowly at times. Volatility will be present because there is uncertainty about oil and China’s sluggish economy. However, if we analyze these two sources of unease, we can also make a forecast on the future of the markets.

Martin Wolf — chief economics commentator for the Financial Times — argues that we should not worry about the market turmoil in China. The real problem is the Chinese economy. Until now, China has relied on huge investments, low cost manufacturing and lots of exports. Currently, it has reached a point where this model does not apply anymore. Investments have been declining, and with them demand for commodities and other assets. All the while, government debt has been increasing, with debt-to-GDP ratio rising 50% in the past 4 years. For approximately a year now, China has shifted its attention towards real estate and financial services. The government has made some positive steps toward a liberalized market, yet there is still a long road ahead before the Chinese markets are considered free. The turmoil in China is a reflection of the shift in the economy described above. It will take a long time before the situation stabilizes.

These internal struggles in the Chinese economy are being felt in nearly every financial market. Energy prices have declined partly because of the decrease in the Chinese demand, which makes up a huge part of the world demand. The growth rate (6.8%) has plunged to the lowest levels since 2009. China needs substantial reforms, especially in the financial sector. Freeing capital flows, increasing privatization and more autonomy and transparency for market participants are fundamental if China wants to stabilize and remain competitive in an ever-evolving financial world.

Oil this week fell below $30 a barrel for the first time in 14 years. There are two factors causing this rout in oil. First, there is an oversupply in oil. OPEC remains steadfast in proceeding with pumping more oil. Now that the sanctions are lifted, Iran has also returned to the fold and it is expected to supply the commodity. When the news about Iran broke, oil fell to $29 a barrel. At the same time, China’s situation has caused a decline in the demand for oil. A barrel costing $20 now seems an inevitable scenario. However, most economists expect oil to return to the previous trend of increasing prices in the middle and long run.

Thus, the situation today and the one in 2008 are very different from one another. Even though China is experiencing a turbulent situation, the US economy has been faring very well. It has full employment levels, stable financial conditions and is expected to continue with the rate increases. The EU is still recovering, albeit at a sluggish pace. Nevertheless, European economies have been performing quite decently, maybe with the exception of Greece.

Speculators who bet on the price movements of stocks, often warn of imminent crisis. They know investors will listen when they speak, so they attempt to influence the price movements themselves. Occasionally they are right, many other times they are not.

In all cases, the most important thing is to look at the different economies, analyze their state, and make the right comparisons with historical counterparts. That is the only way to forecast and prevent a financial crisis. Right now the source of the upheaval is China. As the World Bank said a few months ago, the solution is fundamental reforms in the Chinese economy and market.

First Investment - Is Oil The Way To Go?

Hi guys, I live in the UK and currently have savings across bank accounts making next to no money from interest rates.

Im not looking to make a quick profit, instead, im happy to invest my money and let it sit.

With oil prices at current all time lows, would it be worth investing in oil now?

Im looking at BP and Shell primarily, and also exxon.

Despite the (what im lead to believe is super low oil prices) it doesn't appear as if either 3 of of these companies have "crashed".

Im only using google finance and related articles from their as my research, along with TV news.

Lets say I was comfortable to tuck my money away for 3-5 years, can i expect to gain much on my investment?

Is now a bad time to buy, or the best time to buy?

One Gallon of Milk is Now Worth Nearly Two Gallons of Oil - BizBantz.com

With crude oil at a 12-year low that means it is now even cheaper than milk.

The one gallon price of West Texas Intermediate crude is nearly equal to just half a gallon of Class III milk. That makes this the lowest ratio since 2004.

Intraday trading Wednesday pushed WTI down to $26.19 a barrel marking the lowest level since May 2003. That is the equivalent to 62 cents a gallon. Also milk futures are being traded at $13.74 per 100 pounds, or $1.18 a gallon.

This market is not for the faint of heart: Trade in the channel

Massive swings in market, good luck everyone. I'm looking at if S&P can hold 1850 today. I think we're in a channel for the day if you're good with the trigger and trade options on the channel you'll make some money; however I wouldn't hold any index options overnight though, that's just me.

Explain to me If I've made a mistake by purchasing, selling, and repurchasing.

Ok, everyone, I'm totally new to buying stock. The extent of my experience is that this one time I bought into a mutual fund, so I'm not sure if I've made a mistake now that I'm playing around on buying and selling stocks myself. Here's what I did all within 4 weeks:

  • I bought stock in a group of companies for $500.

  • I waited and sold the stock when it was up 22%.

  • The stock then dropped 14% in value from the 22% that it had risen when I sold it

  • at which point I used my original investment plus the money I made to buy it again.

  • Now from that 14% decrease that I repurchased it at, it's up 9%.

To me, it seems like I did something smart, but I'm not the most intelligent person out there and I wanted to check and see if I'm missing something. Each trade cost me $5, so $15 total. Was I better off just holding on to the stock? Have I done something illegal? At no point was I ever taking a loss.

Dow down 540 points today. General consensus is that the drop in oil prices is causing this.

Seems to be recovering a bit as of right now though. Interesting nonetheless from a financial standpoint just because of how much the fed has done everything possible to keep things stable for the last six years. And then when interest rates are raised a minuscule amount in December, this happens. I don't think its related to interest rates, but I can see how people could put that together and make a political argument.

Pascal's Wager... on Oil Prices?

In the early 17th century Blaise Pascal designed the argument that it is always better to believe in God than to not seeing as the benefit of believing was greater than the benefit of not. I'm not here to start religious warfare, but instead to take this idea and apply it to current oil prices.

First, let me outline my assumptions. The most important being that markets are forward looking. While numbers such as the increase in supplies do influence markets, prices generally reflect what traders believe will happen in the future.

Now let's look at the future, specifically in regards to Iran and the increased supply. It is my belief that this increase in supply (initially 500K barrels/day evolving into 1M barrels/ Day) is mostly baked into current prices with perhaps a floor around $25/barrel ($25 since people psychologically tend to gravitate toward round numbers). Again this is based on the premise that prices are forward looking.

Now for our wager scenario. Ultimately there are two outcomes, Iran does in fact output at the numbers it guided, or it does not. If we believe output reaches the guided levels, prices are already adjusted for such events and volatility would remain at current levels. On the other side however if Iran misses or delays its production targets, there stands to be significant volatility with a bias to the upside.

Our wager choices now, simply Long or Short Oil (ignoring the fact that you could just stand on the sidelines).

Shorting oil could see a modest modest gain if the commodity were to move lower, but since prices have already adjusted for Iran production, gains would be contained. Being short oil with an unexpected lower production scenario could yield disastrous results as traders would then need to reprice the commodity amidst new, uncertain developments.

On the flip side, the trader long oil stands to lose a small amount assuming an oil floor price of $25 versus the event in which Iran misses production targets and oil could move higher. Not to mention that a miss in Iranian production would move prices higher which could generate the start of a short squeeze in the commodity. This would then have compounding effects on price movement.

Ultimately, it's up for the individual to decide, but I believe there is only one trade that makes sense.

Of course, I'm not perfect so personally I wouldn't go long Oil as is, but instead would likely use options, preferring to sell put options (bullish strategy) that are lower than current prices.

What's an average ROI in stock trading?

Assume my knowledge of the stock market goes no further than "buy low sell high" (a fair assumption as this is true)

Im currently working my way through investopedia, and have planned some time aside this weekend to read through that.

I honestly (atm) wouldn't even know how to buy a stock.

In terms of a return, im wondering if there is a, typically considered, "average". I understand not everyone profits, some people lose a lot of money, but i've got some good savings set aside and rather than them sitting in my bank account earning me nothing, i'd like to invest this money into something for myself.

Hey, it would be nice to turn 100k into 1 mil, i figure the stock market is the place to do it?

But in terms of a return, what are "averages". Is there a set time that it would take someone to turn 1k into 10k, 10k into 100k, 100k into 1 million and so on?

Sorry for such a nooby (and probably) stupid thread in advance.

Looking for advice on $HLX

Hey guys, new to playing the stock market and looking for advice. Let me start off and say I am extremely lucky to have such generous grandparents. Earlier this year they decided to transfer a significant number of shares of $HLX to my brokerage account. Well if you looked at the 1 yr price chart its pretty much has nosedived. If you don't know $HLX is a offshore oil drilling company so with the massive drop in oil recently this explains the drop.

My questions is with the anticipation of even lower oil prices and the possibility of a bear market this year should I cut my losses now and invest in some low risk stocks and then reinvest into an oil company once it starts to rebound? Or should I just ride this out and hope for the best, maybe even buy more shares? I don't need the money so I can hold on to this for several years or longer.

I know the first scenario goes pretty much against every basic investing advice (buy high/sell low, don't try and time the market), but I figure $HLX won't be turning around anytime soon and I can at least stop the bleeding. But at the same time the stock is pretty much at rock bottom and I don't think it will drop much more (although every time I think that it drops some more). Any advice would be appreciated.

What's stopping oil producing countries from buying oil instead?

With oil now around $30/bbl, why don't oil producing countries instead buy up the cheap oil contracts by the metric assload then promptly cutting production completely, announcing it to the world and sit back to profits?

I'm not talking about oil producing companies who have to answer to regulatory bodies or governments. Like what's stopping Venezuela or Nigeria as a country from buying up future dated contracts and completely shutting off production? Since they're losing money at $30/bbl, instead of being a producer, why not be a reseller? This seems so obvious that I must be missing something? I get that this is manipulation btw but it's seems to me it wouldn't be any worse than what OPEC does/is doing currently.

I opened a Roth IRA with OptionsHouse two years ago while I was still in college and put some money I made from internships into it ($5.5k per year for 2 years).
After graduating college I took up employment at a market maker/ trading firm and was required to disclose all of my brokerage accounts to the firm. I put down my OptionsHouse account number and thought nothing of it as I never really traded in the account anyways.
4 months later I get a margin call in my Roth and start freaking out. I don't trade on margin and was only long stock in the account. I call them up and it turns out I owe them money for a market data subscription for being a "professional". Note that i never was notified that I was being charged for market data and that I never even contacted them and told them I was a professional (my employer just requested statements from them). They literally just started charging me based on no direct interaction between me and OptionsHouse. I informed the guy I spoke to on the phone that this was the case and he said he'll call me back later that day to resolve the issue. That was 2 weeks ago and I never received a call so I was forced to liquidate a position for no reason. It turns out that they had silently withdrawn $150 a month from my account ever since I joined, totalling $600 in a $13k account that I rarely used. After dealing with the margin call, I reached out to them to first cancel the market data subscription and then later to ask for a refund. Two weeks have passed and I haven't yet received any kind of response from them.
Be wary, these guys won't act ethically if they don't have too.

Please be brutally honest. I want to get into trading. I'm reading stuff left right and centre and getting to grips usin demos, but I want to have it made clear by experienced voices what trading using CFDs entails, both positively and negatively.

$25K Pattern Day Trading Rule - How To Get Around Without Depositing $25K?

Why in the world was this rule ever allowed to be implemented? Is FINRA simply comprised of ex-fund managers similar to how the FED is all ex-Goldman? How is a new trader supposed to acquire capital?

In a volatile market such as this being forced to hold onto a losing trade because I don't want to lose trading privileges for 90 days is dumb. I would have made $773 this morning had I had the opportunity to trade but instead I have to wait until next Friday to get my 3 day trades back (made 3 day trades yesterday, up $115). If I made a trade today I'd be labeled a pattern day trader and be done for 90 days. I'm up 29% in the past 2 weeks but can't do anything until next Monday now because of this stupid rule.

If all you have to say is "get rich scrub, $25K is small potatoes" then please don't bother commenting. If you are experiencing/have experienced this and know of a way around it - I am all ears. Thank you

Is Deregulation To Blame for China's Volatility?

A quick glance at the 5 year chart shows almost no volatility at all until late 2014. After that it literally exploded.

My, albeit feeble, memory says that they started trying to be more like American markets and pricing more aggressively against EPS. Am I close?

Seems to me that the Chinese market is trading way, way above historical values. It's not surprising that they're having trouble keeping it inflated.

Perhaps a more Western style of media coverage would bring some excitement?

I think they need to hire a Chinese equivalent to Jim Cramer.

What so you think about China suspending circuit breakers in its Stock Markets?

The China Securities Regulatory Commission suspended its recently implemented circuit-breaker system Thursday, hours after Chinese stocks were halted shortly into the trading session.

The system led to trading halts on two separate days this week amid selling. The circuit breaker kicked in roughly 30 minutes into Thursday trade, when the CSI300 plunged more than 7 percent.

Suspending circuit breakers would effectively cut off one regulatory tool China has used to limit how far stocks can fall.

What's the point of regulation if you suspend it at exactly the time when you need it?

My cousin has recently got into this.

I'm a complete and utter novice to investing and dabbling in the stock market, however my cousin has said these guys seem legit. They send him signals each day and tell him what to place money in/on and boast over a 75% success rate.

Is this something that I should consider or is it something I should stay well clear of?

Here's the groups twitter hashtag

Any advice much appreciated as I don't want to get burnt.

Please use layman terms when responding as I know nothing/little about trading and dabbling with stocks.

Thanks again!

Square (NYSE: SQ) Yes or No?

I'm conflicted on pulling the trigger for Square (SQ)

Its a brand new listing, it IPO'ed in November 2015.I see this service in use everywhere! Every single transaction involving a mom n' pop retailer, food truck, farmers market, non-uber taxi driver, and home repair contractor that I've used in the past year was processed by square. I'm sure you've seen this in use too, buying something using your credit card where the vendor swipes your card through a small square plugin to a cellphone, or a sleek white tablet cash register that spins around for you to sign with your finger. Revenue continues to grow

Year Revenue
2012 $203M
2013 $552M
2014 $850M
Q1-Q3 2015 $892M

On the other hand, Square has yet to be profitable.

Year Profit
2012 $-85M
2013 $-104M
2014 $-150M
Q1-Q3 2015 $-126M

Square made a deal with Starbucks that represents about ~10% of revenue. They will cease to do business together in Q2 2016. Second quarter is also when the holding period for early investors expires, then they are allowed to start trading their shares. Currently, only 8% of the total shares are being publicly traded. If more shares hit the market, I would expect the values of the shares to decrease.

What do you think. Would you buy SQ any time soon?

Never bought stocks before and want to start. How is my strategy?

Went online and googled "stocks to watch under $10 2016" Check multiple sources, and whatever stock I see mentioned multiple times, I'll buy some shares in. Is this a good strategy? If not, what advice can you give for first time noobs like myself?

ELI5: How does halting a stock market help during a large, one day decline?

I read that many stock markets have built in halts, if it goes down 7% then there is a 15 minute trading halt, and if it goes down 20% then it is halted for the day. Wouldn't markets continue to slide upon re-opening?

Why DJIA prices are so low?

What do you think about the situation of DJIA? Will the downfall continues? Anyway, to SELL DJIA index today for speculating the downfall, would be profitable.

14 Year Old Investing for the First Time

Hey! For Christmas, my grandpa gave me a UTMA account and a thousand dollars to invest in the stock market. Problem is, I have no idea what to invest in. I tried to research, and decided to invest in tech, but I have no idea what stock to choose. If anyone has any advice, it would be appreciated.
